Every time I listen to Pentatonix I just marvel at the fact that five such rare, world-class voices managed to find each other and come together in one amazingly talented group. And three of them grew up together in Texas. What are the odds that three people that talented would attend the same high school at the same time? Incredible. They are a gift to all of us.
You absolutely need to react to "Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy". It is one of Avi's best performances for showing off his deep voice. It is an arrangement written for an orchestra, instruments only no voices, and in true Pentatonix fashion, they say "Hold my eggnog", no instruments only voices. It is awesome! And I mean that in the true sense of the word, it will fill you with awe.
It was Avi who worked with Kevin on his voice. When they were on tour they were roommates and also as the group started to become popular they lived together in L.A. To this day the group remains close with Avi.
As far as can be told, Avi is of course still close to Kevin (they always referred to each other as brother), he and Scott apparently follow each other on social media, but there's been no overt contact with either Mitch or Kirstie. Add to that the legal issues, where Avi was not allowed to release anything of his own for exactly 1 year after leaving PTX formally, hence why "Change on the Rise" was released March 22, 2019, the same day as PTX released "Come Along". Non-competition clause?
@@charlottevan_8 I’ve wondered about that. It must have been a really painful and difficult time for all of the group members. I truly hope there are no longer hard feelings.
@@charlottevan_8 You are mistaken. Avi helped chose the new bass Matt. Record contracts are one thing but friendships are another. Avi is still friends with everyone. His sister Esther is still their tour manager. He was at Kevin's wedding.
@@marykuettner752 I don't know why you think I'm not aware of Avi's involvement in finding Matt, or that he is still close with Kevin and was at Kevin's wedding, or that his sister Esther is/was PTX's tour manager (I don't know if she still is, since she just had a baby girl back a few months ago, but I believe her husband, Darien is still their sound/production manager - once they're able to tour again). And I'm quite aware of the difference between legal contracts and longstanding friendships,

Nice reaction! Oh yeah, the "meat and potatoes" comment came from Shawn Stockman, one of the judges from the a cappella competition show The Sing Off in 2011(Shawn was also a member of the mega group Boyz II Men during the 1990's). If you are up to it, RUclips has all of their performances on The Sing Off that year. This was the first time I saw them and have been watching and supporting them since. Best a cappella group in the world!
Current favorites - La La Latch and Where Have U Gone. Originals: Love Again, New Year's Day. Love your reactions. My favorite Christmas songs from them: That's Christmas to Me, Carol of the Bells, Little Drummer Boy. Everything they do is great, honestly. Enjoy your journey!
Love La La Latch, It is so underrated. It is just a brilliant arrangement and Kirstin stood out to me in that one, although Mitch absolutely nailed it too. ☺️
You have a talent-crush on Avi. At least that’s how I think of it. I have the same thing for Mitch. Just utter love, admiration, wonder, respect, pride etc for him. And I’m old enough to be his mother, married.... and a woman. ETA: I’m now off to look for a video of your reacting to Kevin’s solo video 😁
You need to watch Superfruit (Scott and Mitch’s side group)...they do Hip Hop goes Broadway part 1 & 2. It’s sooo funny! If you do make sure you watch the outtakes at the end. You will love it!
You need to react to Change on the Rise, it's a solo music from Avi. It's amazing! An original and a masterpiece. I love his solo work. He looks much different than in Pentatonix.
It's said that Walt Disney overheard a guest in the early days of Disneyland who said something like they had already been on that ride so no reason to ride it again. That's why all of the rides today have more than you can take in... so you can come back again and again and still get something new. Pentatonix is like that. There's so much substance and depth to their music you can listen over and over and still discover something new.
I'm glad you mentioned the settings of their videos. It may be overlooked by most viewers, but I believe that the minimalistic settings of most of their videos actually enhances the enjoyment of their talent. There are so many videos that are graphics heavy or action packed and you end up watching it more like an anime or action movie instead of the music video it is. With Pentatonix the simplicity of their settings (think Hallelujah) almost forces you to focus on their singing and the message of their song. There is nothing distracting you from the beautiful quality of their individual voices and the stunning harmonies and arrangements they present as a group. Stripped down and minimalist as their videos are, about ALL you have is Scott, Kirstin, Mitch, Kevin, Avi and Matt amazing you with their voices and often speaking to your emotions and your heart.
re: Kirstie's singing out of the side of her mouth - that actually impeded her singing - especially her power. It cramped her voice. She worked hard to overcome it and, if you watch the most recent videos (say, in the last 2-3 years), she has a lot more power and control because she DOESN'T sing out of the side of her mouth. I especially noticed it in Amazing Grace. She was MAGNIFICENT.
I have often wondered why she does that, if it is a habit, an injury, or she’s just that dang adorable, but I could never find any information about it online. Do you know if anyone has said anything about it “officially”???
@@heidi_d I think Tara Simons - a voice teacher/reactor said something about it years ago, but I don't remember exactly when. I think it was just habit.
Toddrick Hall's "Wizard of Ahhhs" featuring Pentatonix is amazing. You'll be blown away and it is probably some more of 'your style' of music. Since we're at the holidays though, you may want to check out "Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy (Grammy #2)," "Little Drummer Boy," "O Come, All Ye Faithful (a little Caribbean style)," "Where Are You Christmas," and the live version of "Silent Night (since you like Avi)" while you're at it. Well, really, any of their Christmas stuff. You can't go wrong with Pentatonix during the holidays.
I just now subscribed. I watched several of your videos and liked them, but I only just now subscribed. The reason is because I am subscribed to so many different reaction channels. I love watching people react to Pentatonix for the very first time. I love watching people be so skeptical about what they are about to watch, and then watch the pure shock when they realize what they see! You were on the list of first time reactions, and after that one, I became more interested and watched more and more and liked them all, and I decided it's time to officially watch you. Your reactions are so cool. I really like you. About the song. This is one of my favorites, even though I love all things Pentatonix, because of its simplicity. Their harmonies are so beautiful, and all of them sung in it. They all have their own unique sound, and if you've listen to them for a minute, you can hear all their individual voices while they are harmonizing, which is very unique. Even though their voices are so unique, when they blend them together, each voice enhances the others. The thing I admire the most about them is that, even though any one of them could have a great solo career, they don't let their egos get in the way of this special thing they have created. I played in bands for about 20 years, and three of them could have made it if not for egos. It is a hard thing to have people telling you how good you are. It tends to make people think they don't need to put in the work because they think they don't need to practice and work hard for it anymore. And we were never on Pentatonix's level. Take the crowds of 50 or 70 and compare that to thousands, imagine what that can do to your egos, but Pentatonix doesn't lose track of where they came from and how hard they need to work and improve. I admire them so much!! I'm sorry about rambling on so much, but I am definitely a passionate Pentaholic:)
You need to go back and watch all the episodes of The Sing Off. That is where the"meat and potatoes" title came from. One of the judges (Ben Folds of Been Folds Five) coined the term. Did you notice that when Kirsten is singing that her face is framed with the cave entrance making it appear as if she has a halo around her head. I thought that was kind of awesome
Another Christmas song that you will kick yourself if you miss is Home Free's "Do You Hear What I Hear" and I absolutely agree with the "Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy" suggestion and even "Little Drummer Boy" as well.
Another great review loved it as always and I to loved this the layering they do is so flawless and there is so many more Christmas videos ...like Thanks with Scott singing ...mean one mister Grinch which Mat does the lead and its a great video .... Hope you have a Merry Christmas
I feel the exact same way about this group as you do, I love them so much! PLEEEZE react to their "Say Something" - you'll get the "feels" like crazy - it's so good and I just want to hug Avi in that video.
The Meat and Potatoes nickname was given to them by Shawn Stockman of Boyz II Men when they were competing on The Sing Off. He was one of the judges and many say the original Pentaholic.
You have SO much to listen to from them. You need to check out to their "Evolution of" medleys. They've done Music, Michael Jackson, Beyonce, Rihanna and a few more. INCREDIBLE and they are all live.
you talking about kevins talent, little did you know exactly how cool this dude is. he beatboxes, plays the cello, sings, speaks 4 languages, raps, does something he calls "celloboxing" (beatboxing and playing cello st the same time), and he writes songs, as well as arranging some of PTX's covers
Meat & Potatoes came from their a cappella competition. One of the judges noted it before anyone recognized how well Avi & Kevin were melding together.
Most definately need to react to their original song, Love Again.. Kevin going insane on the beatboxing, Mitch's "scream" and Avi knocking your soul out with that bass..
Great reaction and comments Avi and Kevin are the foundation of PTX “Meat and potatoes” expression was coined originally in the Sing Off contest they won You should react to their song there... you’d be even more amazed with them, as their talent is still there right from their start as group See you in the next one
Thoroughly enjoying your reactions to Pentatonix and your recent discovery of Home Free. I have a reaction request, not acapella as much as I enjoy that myself but def rock genre even although this one is a ballad. The band is called Liliac and the song is "Sail Away". It is an original song by them. The group is five siblings ranging from 12-21. The singer, Melody, I believe is 17-18 now and her voice is hard to describe. Almost smoky, Janice Joplin and/or Stevie Nicks like. These kids are awesome. Looking forward to to seeing your reaction if/when you get to them.
Okay, so as we continue your journey down the rabbit hole it’s time to see Kevin do some cello boxing with the group. You’ve already seen him solo. Two excellent songs for that are “Say Something”, where Kirstin has the lead in the song, and “Shallow”, which IMHO is Kevin’s most beautiful cello playing of any of their videos to date. If you want to go in a different direction you should react to one of their original songs. My favorite is “Run to You” which was written by Avi and Kevin. Since they are dropping a new album of originals in Feb. 2021 that would get you prepared for what may come.
Scott Mitch and Kirstin have sung together in choir and as a trio in high school in Arlington, Texas when they competed on NBC TV the sing off with Avriel Kaplan and Kevin Orusola the judges called them the meat and potatoes
Great video. You should try one of their best live performances. What is this feeling (wicked) on NBC i think you'll love it. Also try some superfruit...frozen medley, one of their most fun and best
Yeah, my wife says I'm obsessed with them too. Don't feel bad. My absolute favorite group too. They are super talented, but an excellent arranger and video producer too. Have you watched Can You Feel the Live Tonight?
Another awesome reaction, I love you & your channel so much 🥰 if you want more Christmas stuff their new ones ‘Thank You’ an original written by Scott & his partner Mark is stunning and ‘12 Days of Christmas’ which is now officially my favourite Christmas song ever lol older more casual (video wise) covers that you should absolutely check out (especially as an Avi fan) are ‘No’ and ‘Gold’ and I won’t ever stop recommending ‘Come Along’ and ‘Love Again’ 😊💓
You should check out some of their arrangements from when they were on The Sing Off. Believe it or not, Kevin and Avi had never been with the group until the day before the audition.
I don't see this anywhere yet. Avi taught Kevin to sing initially as an instrumentalist he didn't even know he could. Avi and Kevin were roommates starting out as Mitch and Scott were too. They developed a great working relationship as the rythmn section. The foundation of pop music. As it became generally known when they got their Daft Punk grammy, straight guys in one apartment and gay guys in the other. A situation that the tv network had worked very hard to hide. Even removing all the discussion of bullying of Mitch and Scott when they did their PSA for the Trevor project during the Sing-Off leaving only Avi talking about being mistreated as the only Jewish kid in school. Avi was the one who kept them on track organizing them and the business in the beginning with Kevin going between helping Avi with Pentatonix and his own music while the trio was bouncing around and in the 2nd year Scott and Mitch started Superfruit distracting them further from Pentatonix business development. See interview done at the time. ruclips.net/video/iv6OLHWUos4/видео.html
I’m enjoying watching you watch them. The complex simplicity of their videos is boggling to the mind - they don’t need a video to enhance their songs. A video compliments their song! I’m obsessed with Avi also! His voice is so seductive, especially when he throws one of those side smiles and drops his eyes before coming back to stare into your soul.
❤️ Avi too! But Years of stress on his vocal cords to deliver such tremendous Bass! ❤️Kevin too! Regretfully Kevin will reach his limit also. However he is a genius musician with limitless options. We must ❤️ and appreciate all of them now as “All things must pass” GH❤️
Reacts to Run To You (original) and Can't help falling in love (Elvis) It's just the 5 singing in perfect harmony as always. And you enjoy Avi's bass and Kevin's harmony with Kirsten
As long as you’re checking out Mary did you know by Pentatonix you could also check out Mary did you know by Voctave featuring the man who wrote the song.
I searched the comments before saying this myself, but I will definitely reiterate it. I've loved Pentatonix ever since the Sing Off and love their version of this song, but Voctave's is better in my opinion.
Been watching your PTX reactions now and really enjoying them! I'd also love to recommend Voctave. They're a very different vibe, but are also SO GOOD. Their movie medley or disney princess medley are great choices!
I love seeing how excited you get when hearing PTX. It brings back feelings from when I first heard them! Any song you pick of PTX will be worth your time. My favorites that you haven't heard are Where are you Christmas, Say Something, Can you feel the love tonight, Little Drummer boy and Light in the hallway. I don't think that one has a video but Avi is lead vocal and sounds amazing. Scott wrote it for his nephew I believe. There are sooo many covers and original songs by them that are so beautiful. P.S. I saw them in concert for my Birthday last December. Best birthday present by far.
Yassssss!!!! I am so happy that you finally did this one. Love love your reactions especially with PTX now that you have officially become a Pentaholic. Who ever gave you a thumbs down for this has some serious problems...LOL Anyway, If you liked their "Daft Punk" Medley you should definitely react to their song "Love Again"....If you think the makeup was good in Daft Punk wait until you see their "Love Again" video. Just wow!! The song is fantastic and and you will literally melt when you hear Avi's part...lol One other one you could react to is their cover of "God only knows" by the Beach Boys. It's been out a while and Matt is in this one. It's not really a Christmas song, but the video has a Christmas vibe to it. When you see it you'll know what I mean. Again, thank you so much for doing "Mary, did you know". Love this song and the way they did it. Oh, I just thought of one other one you could do as well. Can't remember if you've done it already, but they did their version of "Silent Night"...no music what so ever just their voices and yes, Avi kills it in this as well. LOL Can't wait to see what you have for us next. Take care hun and stay safe as always.
For those who don't know who Mary is, she is Mother Mary who gave birth to Jesus in Bethlehem , the Lamb of God. I also see calls to watch it from Voctave. Every year Mark Lowery releases a new version of Mary Did You Know with him as the lead. Mark continues to work on how to sing the song to bring out the meaning of the message. It would be fascinating to see you point that out. If they doubled the voices here, imagine Voctave with multiple voices in each register. IMO this version is singing to Mary. When Mark sings, he is not questioning Mary because she pondered all these events in her heart as God reveals (present tense) Himself to humans, His children and all the earth, beginning with the stable. He blesses Mary to make Himself more relatable to us as our Father to all races throughout the world. If it is too much of the same song in one year, remember it and don't forget to do it next year with Voctave, please.
It would be awesome if you went on The Sing Off journey and see were it all began for them. You'll get a lot of new info from it and you can see where meat and potatoes comes from haha Also if you do, you should watch their performances on the show in order and with judges comments. I'm sure you'll love it!

Miss Friday. Love the king from Mr. Rodgers. Trust we tru holics all feel this way. Greatest group of our generation. Much love and keep on keepin on J.
Another thing you can add to Kevin's many talents: he also plays the cello (possibly other instruments, but that one I know for sure).
I feel the exact same way about this group as you do, I love them so much! PLEEEZE react to their "Say Something" - you'll get the "feels" like crazy - it's so good and I just want to hug Avi in that video.
Avi worked with Kevin on his vocals. Kevin is so awesome!
Mitch is such a smol beast and I love it!
Meat & Potatoes came from their a cappella competition. One of the judges noted it before anyone recognized how well Avi & Kevin were melding together.
Most definately need to react to their original song, Love Again.. Kevin going insane on the beatboxing, Mitch's "scream"
and Avi knocking your soul out with that bass..
Great reaction and comments
Avi and Kevin are the foundation of PTX
“Meat and potatoes” expression was coined originally in the Sing Off contest they won
You should react to their song there... you’d be even more amazed with them, as their talent is still there right from their start as group
See you in the next one
You should watch Kevin perform in Carnegie Hall when he was 17-years old. Super talented!
Sugar Plum Fairy, silent night(live in a church) and there’s always Avi’s solo work. It was Avi who encouraged Kevin to sing.🎶🎶
love your reactions next thing for you after covid back stage passes at a concert there all real, genuine good people
Yes! More PTX please 🙏
Totally agree with all these suggestions
Sean Stockman of Boyz 2 Men dubbed them "Meat & Potatoes" when they were on Season 3 of "The Sing Off", which they won ofc. 😍😎
You appear to be in deep"Smit" with Avi. Lol
Love your reactions, you're so personable! Subscribed! 🙂
I don’t know a bad PTX song. You should check out Thank you, it just came out a original Christmas song that Scott wrote.
Yeah, my wife says I'm obsessed with them too. Don't feel bad. My absolute favorite group too. They are super talented, but an excellent arranger and video producer too. Have you watched Can You Feel the Live Tonight?
LOVE tonight
Another great reaction! 😎. Recommend “Say Something”, also Scott does a solo video called “Don’t make me tell ya mama” - good stuff all around.
Believe it or not, Kevin and Avi had never been with the group until the day before the audition.
why was I just looking forward so much to her reaction to kevin singing 😂
Amazing Grace!
Amazing Grace Please Next.
Love your reviews better than Any one else.
Kirstens part in amazing Grace will blow you out to space.

Keeping with the Christmas theme maybe check out Home Free singing Do you hear what I hear! It's beautiful I think!
❤️ Avi too! But Years of stress on his vocal cords to deliver such tremendous Bass! ❤️Kevin too! Regretfully Kevin will reach his limit also. However he is a genius musician with limitless options. We must ❤️ and appreciate all of them now as “All things must pass” GH❤️
Reacts to Run To You (original) and Can't help falling in love (Elvis)
It's just the 5 singing in perfect harmony as always.
Love their version of silent night a live version in a Church ❤️❤️❤️
You should react to their new cover of The Twelve Days Of Christmas!! It's really good and I love it!!
To appreciate Mitch and Scott more , check out their Superfruit channel. Their harmonies are insane. Beyonce is the best one11
Been watching your PTX reactions now and really enjoying them! I'd also love to recommend Voctave. They're a very different vibe, but are also SO GOOD. Their movie medley or disney princess medley are great choices!
You have to listen to their rendition of God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen
Avi and Kevin were given the nickname during the Sing off competition...you gotta react to it.🙏🤯
I love seeing how excited you get when hearing PTX. Best birthday present by far.
love your reactions.....
You should watch Kevin solo Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood. He SHREDS on cello and vocals are phenomenal as usual.
I recommend Love Again. It is one of their original songs. This song is amazing.
It would be awesome if you went on The Sing Off journey and see were it all began for them. You'll get a lot of new info from it and you can see where meat and potatoes comes from haha Also if you do, you should watch their performances on the show in order and with judges comments. I'm sure you'll love it!
Shawn Stockman from Boys II Men gave Kevin and Avi the "Meat and Potatoes" name when they were on The Sing Off and it has stuck 😁
