  • Does an expensive cable sound any different than the old cable I enherited from my big brother? How much do cables affect your sound? Let's check it out. The result is actually amazing. In this video you can easily hear the difference from 6 different cables. The guitar is recorded with only one cable affecting the sound thru some good converters.
    We are listening to:
    Van damme pro garde classic
    Evidence Audio The Forte Instrument Cable
    Unknown vintage cable enherited from my big brother
    High End vintage cable
    Monster Cables Jazz inst 12A
    Monster Cable Studio Pro 2000 Inst 12A
    The guitar:
    PRS 513 rosewood
    Interface:
    Universal Audio - apollo twin / softtube amp
    Recorded into Logic pro x - no mixing is done to the recordings

    Hmm, there's a flaw in this, in that even though you are playing the same riff, there's always going to be small variations each time. Better proof would be to use a tone generator with a constant output, and see if different cables change high/low frequencies, as represented on the wave forms.
    I've yet to see any cable companies 'prove' their cable is better by showing signals with an oscilloscope, where you could actually see any differences. Hearing is subjective, seeing is believing.
    Having said that, better quality cables will have better shielding and be more durable against internal wire breakage. Radio Shack cables were the worst, failing after short term use.

      St8kout Yes, the video would be more correct if i had done as you describe. But I would never have made it though since I don’t own the equipment for that. My intention with this wasn’t to find the winner and promote that brand - only to make the viewer aware of there are differences, and therefore make their own comparisons and choices. All the very best to you Soren

      @@SorenReiff But you infact didn't show that there are any differences since you can't play same perfect tone twice, nobody can, for comparison.
      Human isn't a computer. Also human ear couldn't even compare two perfect tones; only a very precise device could.

      Is it possible that the oscilloscope might not be able to reflect all the intricacies of sound perception? I grant you it is a great invention but I'm afraid one must still use one's own ears to discern differences (albeit slight) in audio quality. You couldn't possible be saying that everything about a sound can be ascertained from a 2 dimensional graph on a screen could you?

    Super fedt at høre forskellen på de forskellige kabler. Du skulle de her "Sommer Cable The Spirit XXL" de er super lækre bløde og holdbarheden er i top. Når jeg samlinger det med Mogami og Adam Hall som os er nogle ok kabler, synes jeg bare det åbner lyden mere op og gir lidt mere top og bund.

    Do you consider the balanced 1/4" cables used to hook up the Kemper to the preamp and the preamp to the audio interface to be as important as the guitar cable, or would you spare some money on those ?

    • @SorenReiff
      @SorenReiff  6 лет назад +1

      Thanks for asking, and checking out my channel. Personally I wouldn't try to save some money, if I invested in a high end product like the Kemper. I guess they are going to kind of short cables, so it won't be super expensive. Maybe to save some money I would by the VanDamme cables instead of Audio Evidence, depending on the budget - but I wouldn't use cables that was "around"/spare cables with a serious setup as a Kemper. Only place I'n using VD or EA cables are for switching banks or channels with my G2. All the best Soren

    Could you clarify what model of cable is used for your Van Damme; whether it's their Pro Grade Classic XKE etc.?

    • @SorenReiffdk
      @SorenReiffdk 5 лет назад

      Yes it's their Pro Grade Classic XKE with Neutrik connectors :-)

    Søren, I get some crackling/scratching sounds on my recorded tracks. Could this be due to bad cable quality? I also get extreme feedback when playing with high-gain distortion

    • @SorenReiffdk
      @SorenReiffdk 6 лет назад +1

      Uh, that's a hard one ... maybe. Or you could be recording with the gain on your recording equipment set to high - make sure nothing is clipping when you record.
      And you can get some serious feedback with highgain pedals if your pickups can't "handle" all that gain ... or if you're playing very loud.

    • @warpigofthepower7918
      @warpigofthepower7918 6 лет назад +1

      Soren Reiff dk My signal chain is / Les Paul Traditional - Vox Tonelab SE preamp - Carlsbro Hornet or Pearl River combo - SM57 - Scarlett 2i2 - Pro Tools First \ Also the gain setting on my interface is always in the green zone, so I doubt there's any clipping. But I noticed I also get the noise when using VST's, could there be a connection?

    • @SorenReiffdk
      @SorenReiffdk 6 лет назад

      Yes ... good with this explanation. If you're sure there's no clipping on your audio interface, when you are recording - and that you can't see any clipping, neither on the audio file, when you're inspecting that in PT, or on the channel, during playback (meaning that you've turned up to much, or have added something that make it clip. Then I guess it might be your buffer settings. Don't know PT that well, but for instance on Logic, you can set you Buffersize in a submenu to all your other audio/recording preferences. It the buffersize it set to small (maybe its done to avoid latency (audioable delay while recording) - then you will get clicks, sounding somehow like digital distortion ... and get it randomly. Try to raise your buffersize to 256 or 512, and see if that helps :-)

    The only difference this highlights is the difference in capacitance of the various cables. If you want the full frequency range of the guitar the VD’s are the clear choice. Of course you can buy Sommer or Gotham Audio low capacitance cables for about $1 USD a ft.

    • @SorenReiff
      @SorenReiff  6 лет назад

      tanyet Yes the difference comes from capacitance - not sure how to understand your conclusion for the VD ... which I love, but I known many prefer the EA :-)

      Soren Reiff by the way, since its already a fact that expensive cables sound better- is there a rule or thumb to use only one brand/type along the chain? I already bought mogami as main lead, but for short effects connection- the only available I found is Canare or Belden/ CAJ. Is it ok to mix "good quality" cables? Thanks

    • @SorenReiff
      @SorenReiff  6 лет назад

      I don't know any rules ... and I used Mogami for years when I started to build my own studios. An great thing about Evidence Audio and a few other brands are that you don't need to be good soldering cables ... I made all mine and my board without soldering, using Evidence. About the sound - I think that if you use a fortune on good cables and have one really poor cable as you last one in the chain, you will still loose all the "openness" high-end you get from the expensive cables. All the best Soren

    Yeah wow... I think the Van Damme seemed richer and more clear or flat compared to the others, the expensive one seemed more colored but not in a nice way...
    The others sounded very low fidelity sound, almost changed the guitar effects haha

    Best to me is to buy the cable you like and the connectors you like.. a lot cheaper, even with cost of company to build custom. I so far have got customs from designacable.com and swamp.net.au

      1000 tak!! Kender ikke Sommer Cable, ... der findes mange fede kabler, så godt at blive introduceret til nye. Og fedt hvis de åbner - det er jo også det jeg synes om ved Van Damme og Evidence ... så er det bare herligt der findes andre mærke, som også gør det - og så med denne vidensdeling, så vi kan have glæde af hinandens erfaringer.
