I think cables fall into the “they need to be good enough” category. You don’t need a million dollar cable but you also don’t want the cheapest one you can find.

Well….if the player hears/feels a difference that’s all that matters. I am an audiophile and Without Question the worst discussion when talking to audiophiles is whether or not expensive cables make any difference….otherwise normal people suddenly grow fangs and hate anyone who disagrees with them. For guitar I like my Mogami but also have a new cloth covered Fender cable that seems similar. Again if you like a certain cable then use it and tell everyone to shut up.

The differences in copper diameter, jacket thickness, cable length,, plug material and construction, and then the actual construction of the cable in manufacturing all make minute differences...but if the jack you're plugging into on your venue provided backline 10 year old hot rod deluxe is dirty or poorly constructed then those small differences in your cable might make a big difference.

I remember reading an article years ago about Jimi Hendrix using coiled (curly) cables, and why he thought they were better for "his sound". The condensed version of the story is, Jimi felt that a coiled cable removed more high frequencies from his Strat tone, because they are so high piercing. It makes sense to me, because it's a very long cable coiled. He noticed it raised his mid range considerably, and he liked that sound on a Strat. Go look at pictures of him playing. Most always his cable is a coiled "curly" cable. Great for Strat & maybe Tele's, but can't imagine what they do to Les Paul's. Cheers

Last cable I bought, and still use with my bass is a Vox branded, 20ft white coily cable that goes into one side of my pedal board. I use Mogami patch cables, and a 15ft Mogami as a return to my amp. I have the gold Jack's on the coily cable so sometimes I go straight to my amp and it's a super clean, and transparent signal. My other cables are fine for my pedals as long as I've been playing, 30 years or so, I've never had a 100% transparent tone through a pedal board. As long as I can clamp down 85% of the 60c hum I'm happy. On loud stages I always used a noise gate anyway.

Whether the cable matters or not really only comes into play when the venue or location is not good. Bad power, florescent lighting, and neon tube transformers can all be detected by bad cables. The better cable will help with some of these situations. Price and quality are not always related. Good is not always expensive.

    • @rosewoodsteel6656

Of course single coils pick up all that noise, as well. I played at a place in Annapolis, where I had to turn my Strat at a 90 degree angle to the audience to stop the hum from the bad electric, ballasts and neon lights in the place.

I never put too much thought into it outside of recording. I mainly aim for durability. I prefer angle (instrument) to straight (amp). There was a brand called "pighog" I tried and the cables seemed really good for the price, and they had what a lot of companies are trying now days with the extra thick jacketing to give more protection. Problem I ran into is that the jacketing was just a hair too think to connect properly when plugged into my CS 55 P or Road Worn 50s Tele with the old school cup jack. (no issues obviously on the split coil AVS 57 P) So I went back to the old Fender braided I've always used because I know they work and I get good life out of them. I'll check these out. Always looking for something new to try that's made here.

A couple years ago I was at a jam session and a guy grabbed my cheap cable by accident, I guess, and left his Monster brand cable, so I took it so I’d have a long cable still. I told one of his friends so that we could swap back but never heard about it again after that.
I wasn’t interested in expensive cables up until then but I’m sold now
I can’t tell that much different on a six string, especially with multiple pedals. Where I notice a huge difference is with bass guitar
I have an old Crate practice bass amp and a lower end Ibanez bass. When I use a cheap guitar center brand cable the bass and amp sound as cheap as you’d expect but switch to the monster cable and suddenly it sounds rich and full and the dynamics are more sensitive!
Also the Monster brand cable feels more substantial and durable than the cheaper cables that I normally buy.
I really wish wireless sounded good and wasn’t so expensive! I’d love to be free to jump and spin without getting tangled!

Great video as always. My philosophy with any purchase is simple.... get the best quality for my actual needs (many don't accurately assess what their actual needs are though) within the budget I have to spend. Yup, that simple. And depending on what my budget is, that can often be quite different end product purchases.
So as it stands now, my cables are always "what gets consistently good reviews but isn't stupidly expensive". LOL So I never buy the cheapest, but generally mid-range.
I don't gig. I don't play in a band. I play at home (and by myself), to relax and just enjoy the music. Family, friends, whoever, that's fine if they are around, but I don't play to "entertain" others.... except the Mrs.
On another note, yes cables do make a difference. Sometimes it is worth it, other times not so much. We see the same with all other electronic cables, stereo and speaker cables, and so on. Cheers!

There's something to be said for "Look for the Weakest Link" in your gear. Spending $100 for a cable and then plugging it into a Pedalboard where all the connecting cables are 15 cents each isn't much of a test. BUT..... take any number of high-end cables and plug your bass directly into a high-end TUNER and you can visually SEE the difference in a nano second. Cables matter.....unless you use pedal boards. At that point, all bets are off.

I make my own: Just get good quality bulk cable and good quality connectors and you're good to go. Most "bad" cables are those that are made with poor quality components that break down under constant use. Capacitance issues don't really impact the overall sound unless you have longer (instrument) cable runs of more than 18.5 feet. I understand why you need top-notch cabling for FOH and such, but at some point you have to determine cost/benefit ratio when your a not a pro out there on the road.

I was shocked at the difference in tone between my cheap cables from the local shop compared to my sweet Ernie Ball's! I've always used fairly economic cables for years and figured it didn't matter. I'd been in studios and played live and all that. When I grabbed the EBs on sale, I could immediately tell the difference in quality physically. I did a lot of research and they had the thickest gauge cable wire. The audible difference was shocking. My old cables seemed to add a lot of high end and such while the EB cables are tight sounding and clean up the signal path significantly. I couldn't find other cables with nearly as heavy of a gauge. You could tell even with just one cable direct to my amp (all tube amd very dynamic). When you add in all 4 for a normal pedalboard setup, that's a LOT of noise reduction. Also, got them on sale for like $25,(norm $40) so still cheap!!

Guitar cables all have some factor of impedance or resistance that can vary between cables. In general the longer the cable the more resistance it will have. I have heard that guitar cables also have some capacitance, but I have never measured that so can't verify that. But I do know a resistor and a capacitor make a filter that could filter out some of the frequencies in the guitar signal going to the amp. This can be good or bad depending on what you like. I can't tell, but Baxter might be hearing a real sound difference between cables.

The Jury is still out. I am a new player 3 cables in my gear bag. Mogami(for my Bass), Fender(Acoustic/electric) and Pig Hog(335). Putting them through jam session/gigging hell down the road. I'll leave my 2 cents when the aforementioned is under my belt.

I've always paid more attention to durability rather than tonality. For the most part if its got Rean or Neutrik tips, its likely good enough for me. The tonality differences between two quality cables in proper working order always seemed negligible. Big fan of canare wire though. Markertek sells gs-6 for about $0.85/lf and you can make yourself a great cable with that + $6 in tips.

The thing that got me about Magami (back in the early 00s) is you could get them as an employee for like $11.

There’s really a difference between cables. I actually used cheap 20ft cables when I was playing Strats nearly exclusively although I usually ended up putting better ends on them the cheaper cables takes just a bit of high end off.

Take it from an old timer. A good lamp cord from your Home Depot. Nice thick copper. Make your own. Get a thicker copper for bass.

Whatever happened to those half-coiled/half-straight cables that were popular in the 80s? The Clash used them!

I do think cables do matter for quality over quantity. I have tried both. Sometimes the cheaper cables held up for years of use, but most of the times it doesn't. I have had an anomaly where an more expensive cable failed after a short period, but that was the exception then the rule for me at least. YMMV. The old adage mostly applies here: "buy once cry once."

Lo-Fi music/sounds have been very trendy lately. The funny part, for me at least, is how expensive their rigs can be. When you factor in the pedals, buffers, and cables it’s spooky enough how much the accessories cost. Budget amps/guitars have been pretty high quality lately too but you’ll see lofi rigs with some exclusive guitars worth a few grand.
I’ve been hanging onto my old gear and even bad cables just incase i need some authentic analog lofi sounds some day lol
But having good quality cables is nice(and power supply too). No surprise sounds/glitches in your signal. No need to explain to everyone you hear something that isn’t supposed to be there and look crazy.

"just shove it down into your gear bag and forget about it"... man that cuts deep. I recently threw away a massive rats nest of various cords cables and wires. My wife said she's never known anyone that has so many cords before. Thought about posting it for sale as a joke... massive wad of cords for sale, you untangle

Although I'm open to the possibility that a cable makes a little bit of difference, I don't really think it's enough to care about. I use whatever cables that happen to be laying around at home and an old Line 6 wireless when I play out. I just adjust the tone controls on my amp and make it sound the way I want it depending upon the room. Yeah, I'm a simpleton.

Use good to better quality cables. Here's a tip: if they are willing to offer a lifetime warranty, no questions asked, you are on the right track.
That's one extremely important piece of gear that will not let you down.

I like decent cables, but i'm not doing the gold plated monster cable nonsense. Lava cables are about as high end as i go for an input cable. and thats mostly because i find the curly cables dont get tangled up as much. Patch cables , i usually go with hosa. idk if they are great quality or not but ive yet to have one fail.
