Fender amps are pretty much all I have played out of for 40 years. I remember when you could pick them up in pawn shops for little more than pocket change. I have amps stuffed in every closet in my home (drives my wife and son crazy). From the Champ to the Black Face Princeton to the Prosonic and the Red Knob "The Twin", I just can't part with them. Keep making these videos, it makes me feel like I'm back hanging in the old music stores of my youth.

Their videos are just like hanging out the music store talking about guitars, amps, and other common interests shared by musicians such as movies/plays, art, cars/motorcycles, etc.
I’m just thankful that I live in an area where music stores haven’t been completely erased from existence by Guitar Center, the Internet, and minimum buy-in requirements of companies like Gibson.
Me too, not just Fender though... tweeds all over, blackface, vox all kinds. Guitars the same. I'm old now, but just can't bear to part with them. Kids will have a heyday selling then one day,.

My father in law doesn’t play, so he gave me his uncles 1959 Tweed Deluxe. It’s all original, even the ever dangerous, 2 prong cord. I replaced the tubes but still have the originals. I have a few amps, but it is my favorite amp I have. It has so many good sounds and the type of guitar you run into makes a bigger difference than the actual settings on volume and tone knobs. Collings 290 DC S into that Fender, by far my favorite. Small pedal board with fuzz, boost, and delay is so perfect. I wanna add a second vintage amp, for maybe a clean sound and switch between the 2, that would be my ultimate setup. Would love to see some deep dive geekery on Fender amps. Might help me find that perfect second amp.
The 2 prong is not dangerous. You have to plug it in correctly
@@johnsmith-bk4ps yeah. And it has the ground switch. You can plug a cable in and switch back and forth, find the one that hums less and use that. If you don’t… you’ll find out real quick when you touch something else electronic, it with get your attention for sure.
@@ericcarpenter3263 exactly. I just mark the hot side of my plug with a sharpie. Also before you start playing just touch your strings onto the microphone to make sure your good to go. It will spark if theres trouble.
One great thing back in the 80's was that it was easy and cheap to buy 50's to 70's Fender amps. Until SRV hit it big, almost everyone wanted high gain monsters. I was able to buy a Champ and Princeton Reverb back then but I wish I'd been able to buy more.

I have a 63 bassman. Owned it since 1985. Original speaker cab is gone, I have an open back 2 12 cab. It’s does a thing. A good thing.
I have owned and played through several popular Fender tube amps over the years and have settled on a Tweed Bronco and a silver face Champ. Neither model is particularly collectable but sound so nice!
No big dollar amps in my collection😎.

Confusing and fun, exactly. Tried what I can, princeton, deluxe, pro, 65s and 68s, still happy with just my blues junior.
a lot of great music has been played on the blues junior. Its a great amp!
There really isn't any sound like an old Fender amp. Uncle Doug's channel is great for old guitar amps, sometimes going back to the second world war. Old valves, old speakers, old transformers. Something just magical in the mix.
Same with Fazio Electric’s channel! She’s a huge fan of Uncle Doug, too
I have a 68 Super Reverb Drip Edge I've had since 1980 Great Amp, Loud, and it has been through a lot but still strong! And in great shape.
Nice, my favorite subject! I have a 62 Deluxe, a 66 Vibro Champ and a 67 Bandmaster. Old Fender amps are just my favorite, so versatile! Great vid, guys!
I'm running a 65 bandmaster through a 2x10 tremolux cab. Love the response of the 10s on fender amps
I've had a '74 Master Volume Twin since 1995. Caps, tubes, and one speaker replaced, but it still shakes the earth and takes pedals with ease.
I absolutely love to hear other players play through the old Fender amps but the amps that I feel like mesh the most with my hands are Vox amps. There is just nothing I enjoy more than plugging into my AC30 and AC10 and just cranking them up. If I were going to get another Fender I'd get the Tweed Twin Reissue. It's what Clapton uses and those things with a 335 are absolutely glorious sounding.
The late 50s Bassman amps are still a great bass amp. In the right combo with musicians who can control their stage volume a single coil P through a tweed bassman is heavenly.

Great episode and I’d love more content like this- do the deep dive! And maybe an episode on the Tone King Sky King? Please? It’s the best amp I’ve heard.
I have a mint all original '65 Vibro Champ which has the most wonderful sound and I would not sell it for anything. It will be handed down to my Son on the strict understanding that it is looked after the way I have. Some years ago I purchased some NOS valves and capacitors and Jensen speaker as spares just in case. This is one of the best recording amps you can find but do sometimes wish it had reverb. Great video guys!!!

Off topic a little, but I got into Rivera era Fender amps by accident. I love that sound. I have the Super Champ From '82. Changed my life and attitude toward how big an amp has to be for live shows and recording duties.
Back in 1968, 2 of my friends got piggy back Bandmasters. Those amps sounded great. It was so hard to figure out what amp was the best because we didn't really have access to all of them, and didn't have any money at age 15. Fender amps have no equal as far as I'm concerned. I've had alot of amps over the years, and my Blues Deluxe Reissue is my favorite of them all. Play with it enough and you can get very close to so many Fender amp tones. If I could get my hands on a 57 Deluxe, I would need nothing else in life.
Best sounding fender I ever played , a Vibro king original with 3 10" speakers. I've never found anything close .

I've never played any vintage Fender amps but I do own a Super Champ X2, and played on a modern tweed blues deluxe. I really liked both amps as they sound great. I'm not a great guitarist but I hope to explore the world of Fender tube amps as I get better. Thanks for your great content.
I love the old tweed stuff. This weekend I finished changing the Champion 600 reissue that I have had since new to as close to a 5F1 circuit as possible with the board that is in there. I replaced the speaker years ago, but that 6 inch doesn't cut it. Put it on a 12" jensen for a test, and it is amazing. Think Clapton's tone from Layla, but a little more grunge to it when cranked all the way. 5E3 Deluxe is still my favorite though.

Always enjoy your videos. I read a book on Leo Fender and it appears that the Showman was designed in conjunction with Dick Dale as he needed something louder. I had a blond tremolux in the sixties but traded it for the big bandmaster when they came out. Back then everything was more for show.

love my fenders, got a 59/60(?) narrow panel tremolux, a 67 silverface bandmaster head and a 69 Princeton,,, love love love fender amps
Gotta agree with Jonathan on the Pro Reverb. I had a 71 with a pair of Peavey Scorpions that was the best sounding amp I ever owned.
I have owned a handful of 2-12 fender combos.... the pro was the one that I always wanted that never got to play much less own.
Tubes 7 valves are best described as "bottles"! MY fave besides, besides the piggybacks, was my 1961 Super Amp, which was cheaper than the cost of re-tubing my VOX AC30! When it came time to re-tube my Super, I got a new thing called the Sidekick 85, X-ister!

Great vid guys- feel a bit remiss not mentioning Dick Dale being the driving force behind the tweeds having to get bigger and louder in the early days. Dale is evidently the reason Leo lost hearing in one ear during an amp test!
I just bought a 57 champ reissue that I absolutely have fallen in love with beautiful sound great for Jazzy blue stuff that won't bust my ears and I don't need attenuator a great little handwired Beast ! 💖👍
I have a 66 Pro Reverb and as Jon mentioned , it's the biggest sleeper amp of that era. 2 x 12 open back that plays really well at room volume . It's probably my favourite amp i've ever owned
You guys could join with that super PBS-ish "Five Watt World" guy,...and make a super cool video that had all the cool laid back vibes of Casino Guitars combined with Five Watts Public Broadcast " intellectual vibe & style,..that be cool

Hey hey hey 6L6 in the Bassman....such a different tube Cleaner sounding tube for bass use I'm thinking in Leo's eye's/ears But have to say you really glossed over the brown and blonde stuff Oh well Good content Sir's....I've owned every genre Fender amp and the only ones I still have is a 61 Princeton tremolo and a 90's 100 watt blonde Tonemaster That would be a good episode Vibroking and Tonemaster..Bruce Zinky designed early CS amps
OH DONT GET ME STARTED!! The fender amps that i have owned over the years are like my children ....they are around in your life for a while and eventually , even though you love them dearly you have to let them go ( unless your rich and can afford to keep them all at home) i was always trading in and trading up , it wasnt that i didnt love them all for their unique personalities and tones but i would see another fender in a music store or amp book and start planning on how i could somehow own another vintage fender amp that i just could not live without...i always liked to run my amps in stereo so that made thing twice as expensive ,
i once dropped a whole paycheck on a 1959 narrow panel tweed deluxe when my wife (well x wife now) had been bugging me to buy new living room couch and chairs but i found this deluxe for 1400$ and when i came home with that fender and no money for food or couches or anything she was Piiiiiiiiisssttt off ! to put it mildly she said " How in the Hell can you spend 1400 dollars on a speaker!!" and i said " No! baby its not just a speaker.....its a Really old and cool tweed speaker....."she was mad for a while but got over it...and after we were divorced when i sold it a few years later for 6000$ she had to admit i landed on my feet and demanded i buy her a new couch for her and her husband!! ha! i did not! I managed to have ..almost every fender amp i coveted.....not all at the same time of course but the short list goes.. ...2 x 1962 brown face princeton's , 2 xbrown face concerts , 2 x 1966 black faced tremolux's , 2 1962 brown /blond tremolux's a 1960 brown face bassman , a 1966 pro reverb , 2 x Super twins ( as if one wasnt going to be loud enough! ha!) several champs and vibro champs , several silver faces bassmans , i recorded my first album with a 1966 bassman and a 1965 Showman! with a duel showman 2 x15 jbl cabinet!!! WOOOIOHOO!! i loved them all and i take comfort in knowing that Leo built them with world war 2 surplus parts and that they are out there right now somewhere fullfilling some other guitar players dreams and will still be rocking long after im gone....the best one if i had to choose a favorite was the day i finally brought home a 1960 brown face Super. let me just say...'They dont call it SUPER for nothing! i bought that amp for 900$ back in 1995 and now they are still a bargain at around 3500$ what do i have these days? well for now i have 2 x Fender "TWIN" amps not as sexy and hypnotic as the Beautiful Brown Amps but with the 85/25 watt power switch and my les Paul they are just right.(as long as someone else carries them for me! haha!) you see...i told you...dont get me started on fender amps ....we could be here all night!! GOD BLESS LEO FENDER!!

My favorite fender amp is the 2002 Deluxe 90. I've owned two of them over the years and they have the sound I like very versatile.
Back in the late 60's /early 70's the cover band I was in used a Dual Showman head for P.A. driver!!!
IDK if y’all are gonna see this new comment on this old post, however I would be quite interested in either a Blackface vs. Silverface detailed differences video. I would be especially interested in your opinions on the newer line of Fender 68 Custom amps; especially the Twin Reverb… because what’s not to like about a Twin Vibrato channel and a Bassman circuit on the other channel.
One of the rarest piggyback amps... the 6G9 Tremolux, The first Fender amp with EL84s, made in the first half of 1961 for about 6 weeks. The cabinet is typical piggyback, except that the speaker is a single 10 inch with a tone ring....Super rare and very expensive. Replaced by the 6G9-A Tremolux with easier to source ( in 1961) 6L6s...
My first Twin was a Red Knob and 20 years after I got rid of it I still see it every week as my friend I play with still has it.

I'm more into Les Paul/Marshall now but with my Tele I match it up with a repro '58 tweed Tremolux and a Weber alnico, love it. Something special about the pine wood cabinet.
I had a 1972 Fender Bassman 100 that was (IMHO) easily the best-sounding amp I ever had for either guitar or bass. I sold it in 1984 to pay for my last semester's tuition in medical school. I miss it, but I guess it turned out alright, LOL!
Can’t forget about fenders mount Vesuvius the 72 fender super six reverb. I know you said you weren’t going silver face. But… 100 watt, 6 x 10, reverb, 7600lbs.

Lately I've been debating on whether I should get a Fender Deluxe Reverb 65 reissue or a Marshall Plexi reissue. I tend to always revert back to the Fender.

Yes, there are silverfaces. There are vintage fenders you can actually afford. Twins, pros and supers are particularly cheap right now.

Ah yes Johnathan, the "Evil Twin" I've played a lot of Fender amps, but have never owned one in my 40 years of playing, and I'd have to make it a candidate if I were to buy a Fender. I played a 40 watt Tweed,( can't remember anything but vibro?) and if I had a choice, that would be it, but I love the sound of those red knobbed beasts. So clean, and great dirty as well, love 'em.

I have a ab165 bassman that I've rehoused into a fender acoustasonic cabinets that I got it and put a single 12in I still have the original piggyback head and 212 closed back cabinet and a 215 closed back cabinet and it freaking rocks it's easy to carry around and its screens with that single 12

These amps were NOT designed by Leo, and were a completely different beast which don’t belong to the Fender legacy.
Tommy Walker had a lot to do with the amp side of Music Man..... I have 2 Music Mans(men?), a '79 210-65, and an '81 212HD-150. The 210 is hands down the best guitar amp I've ever owned in sixty-plus years of gigging. Sounds great, something like a big Fender tweed, and built like an anvil. Kinda heavy, but that wasn't an issue. Not a half-bad steel guitar amp, either.
The Tweed Pro, Super, Bandmaster, Bassman and Twin all used 6L6GB’s or 5881/6L6WGB’s
The Tweed Champ, Princeton, Harvard, Vibrolux, Deluxe and Tremolux used 6V6GT’s. The Reverb unit used a 6K6.
Since one more amp used a 6V6GT than the 6L6 amps, I’ll let Jonathan slide on that silly remark.
I could have sworn the Blonde and Black Bandmaster used a 1X12 Tone Ring or sealed cab.

As someone below pointed out- during the 80s- when I was a teenager- you could buy old 60s and 70s Fender amps cheap. No one wanted them- everyone wanted to sound like EVH, Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, Randy Rhodes, Kirk Hammet, etc., etc. - all the gain. I had a friend who invited me over to stay the night when I was in the 7th grade. He said his dad had a guitar and amp in the attic we could check out. So, I go with him- we get to the attic and at the time- this didn't impress me in the slightest- I thought it was pure junk. His dad had an old seventies something Jazz Master and a '57 Tweed amp- he caught us playing with it and made us stop but- I didn't care. I remember thinking "Man, even I have better stuff than this ancient junk." I had an old Harmony Les Paul rip off and a cheapo solid-state amp that costed like 50 bucks. Fast forward about 20 years and I ran into the guy again- by this time I know what his dad has/had- I begged and begged for him to check it out and see if it was still there- but I never heard from him if he did. He said his dad had passed but it was probably still in the attic just rotting away- I wanted to go right then and see but- he put me off, got my number- never called me. Man- at least I got to hold it for a few minutes when I was like 12 huh? He probably went and looked the stuff up after I talked to him and realized what he had and how much it was worth.
I played through a red knob idontknowwhat when testing out the mockingbird I eventually impulse-bought. It was nice, I got a decent dirty blues tone on it.
Steve Cropper used a Harvard on practically every hit of Booker T and MG's.
Steve Cropper used the Harvard amp until 1966 when he switched to a Super Reverb.
Thought Crop used Silvertone Twin Twelves. Hmmm
I have a 61 bassman and Bandmaster 71. Went through 4 separate sets of speakers in each. Killer amps, both are piggybacks.
Leo could never shake the chase for gain. What I like most about my BF Bandmaster is the breakup when I plug my 78' Custom LP into it with Super Distortions. You have to dime the treble, bass and at least 7 or 8 on the volume.
Do you guys know what the deal is with the Bassbreaker pre-amp/power-amp design? I know they SAY its a cross between a Bassman and a Marshall 1962 but ive heard somewhere the gain structure is based on a Deluxe?
I saw that same advertisement from electrical harmonics maybe 5 years ago. Haven't looked into what they're doing with it at this point
Please deep dive into the Super Champ. The Champion of Champs. I know it was an early eighties Amp, but it retains the original black face vibe (and look).
I think it started out as being a little confusing when I first started getting into guitars and amps, but at this point I've been around long enough and have played enough of them to have a pretty respectable grasp on the Fender amp line... Kinda... There are a lot of them.
I personally would love a deep dive into amps. 5 Watt World does some pretty cool stuff but dudebro can be pretty dry and sticks to just the facts and history. (Not that I don't love that channel)

I’ve never owned a tube amp and don’t know a whole lot about them, but I think my next purchase is going to be a tweed Princeton Reverb from Sweetwater. I live in an apartment, I already piss off my neighbors, I don’t need anything louder than that
Get a tube amp! Your world will be forever changed. The 68 Vibro Champ Reverb reissue seems to be a great little apartment amp if you want to renew your lease next year. A little more expensive than I think it should be but.... Gorgeous Fender tube sound at decent volume.
I want a Princeton cause it would be quieter than my Blues Junior. But I want a bassman because it would be louder than my Blues Junior.

Tube replacement (they wear out); speaker switch (the original Jenson’s aren’t as good as the newer eminence or celestion); you get the point.

When did the Blues Jr. come into play? Seems like that is the perfect clean/pedal amp?
The Blues Junior came out in the 90s. It was part of the Tweed series of amps introduced in 1993 that included the Bronco(which was solid state), Pro Junior, Blues Deluxe, and Blues Deville, which was originally only available as a 4-10 then they added the 2-12. I think the Blues Junior was added at the same time as the 2-12 Blues Deville. These amps except for the Bronco continued on as the Hot Rod series when Fender replaced the tweed with black tolex. Of course, there have been numerous tweed reissues over the years as well as numerous Special Runs with different cosmetics and speakers. The original amps in both the Tweed and Hot Rod series were all US made. Production moved to Mexico in the early 00s.
For what it’s worth, the Tweed series was introduced because of the popularity of the 59 Bassman reissue which had been introduced in the late 80s and the rising value of vintage Tweed amps. Fender thought they could capitalize on the love of the Tweed aesthetic by introducing a new affordable line of Tweed amps.
I bought the first Bronco my local Fender dealer got and the second Pro Junior he received. He liked the Pro Junior so much he kept the first one for himself. I sold the Bronco for more than I paid for it in 1999, and kept the Pro Junior until it was stolen in 2014. I still miss the Pro Junior. I have a special run Blues Junior, and they are definitely great amps .

Did you mention the super reverb? 4x10 and I think 40 watts. A friend has one and I have a DRRI and I really like the extra headroom.

Although if I lived in the States and was in the market for a new amp the Cutthroat Audio Down Brownie would be coming home with me, Fender and Marshally flavour Brown Deluxe. Perfecto
I think the pro and super reverbs are the real sleepers. 40 watt, tube rectified somewhat affordable combos. The super is a 2 ohm 4×10 if that does anything for you.
I had an early bassman top and cab in 71 and even though I didn’t know much and didn’t play that well … I told a friend that I had bought a magic amp tha,t made my Shitty guitar sound 20 feet tall . I was playing an early 50 watt Marshall and didn’t know it
Everyone forever mentions or references the Twin, but no one actually talks about it in detail. What does it sound like? How does it work? How many tacos does it take to eat before you weigh as much as one?
There are so many, it definitely gets confusing. I have always wanted a mid 60s Bassman, so I can get closer to that Mike Ness sound.
Ness has modified Bassmans and he won't talk about what's done to them

Is there any way to tame that volume on a Deville? I bought an amp box from JHS but it takes all the clean away. I’d like to have just a little more control but stay under the headroom. Maybe a different pot in the amp box thing?
Early Amps were the woodies. Model 26 etc. Not the 2 tone 600
You are right, but basically the first thing they said in the video was that they were going to start with the Golden era of Fender amps which begins with the tweeds. The tweed champ was derived from the two tone Champions.
