Xenoblade 1 was my system seller for the Switch. It is truly 10/10 game. Amazing story and world bulding, amazing characters, fun and stratigic combat, an open world which is not boring for once, and IMO the best romance story in gaming I ever played.
Something you are going to realize about Trails to Azure once you play Cold Steel: the toughest boss battle in Azure? When she told you that she was holding back the entire time, you will find out what that really means in Cold Steel. She was going easy on you, she could have obliterated the special support section with just 3 words. She doesn't, however, because she is the soul of chivalry and fair play. It's one of the things I love most about trials. "I was holding back" is an anime trope, but Trails actually shows you, in painstaking detail, exactly how and why a character holds back. Oh, and pay careful attention to how Dieter was beamed into his Aion. You're going to find out where Professor Novartis came up with that very soon, as you'll be seeing that a lot in Cold Steel.
I loved my Sega Dreamcast. While I was aware of the RE games, Code Veronica on the SDC was the first time i finished one. Plus many other games, what a great system indeed.
The Xenoblade-Saga, Dragon Quest V, VIII and XI are my all time favorites. Really love these titels. Golden Sun 1 and 2 are my childhood memories. Love em too and wished they would be remaked in HD-2D.
While Persona 5 is among my favourite gales you managed to sell me on Persona 4. This far I've kind of steered away from the previous games of the franchise but this Black Friday discount of -30% seals the deal. Adding it on my long list of to-play games. Also solidified my purchase of Xenoblade 1. Have played the other two and while #2 was ok, if not even good, #3 was absolutely amazing. Hoping that #1 will surpass #2 but most likely wont reacj the greatness of #3.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say it goes without saying Chrono Trigger is 10/10 and that's why a lot of people exclude it. I like to see what others consider 10/10 other than, what i would consider, the obvious.
That's a very good list you got there, you did miss Phantasy star online episode 1-2 on the dreaamcast and xbox 1 classic, also on gamecube I believe that game is also one worthy on your list.
Lost Odyssey has always been a favorite of mine. Loved the combat system, and loved the story and characters. It's sad it didn't get the attention it deserved during that time.
my personal list, in no particular order: P5R and P4G FFIX, FFVII, FF Tactics Ogre Tactics both Chronos (Cross and Trigger) Pretty much the whole Trails series Fire Emblem Awakening, Path of Radiance, and Radiant Dawn Valkyria Chronicles 1, 3, and 4 Parasite Eve 1 Suikoden 2
Persona 4 Golden is really good, but I like Persona 3 so much, it has so many of my favorite soundtracks in the franchise and it has my favorite cast in the franchise, maybe Tartarus can be frustrating, but the combat is really good, I like the Fusion Skill mechanic and it has my favorite story because it has a beautiful message that shows you the importance to appreciate your life. Persona 3 is one of the games that changed my way to see the world and that's why is my favorite and I can't wait for Persona 3 Reload.
This is a great list and I had to sub! I never finished XC definitive edition but will get back into it. They’re just such massive games! Also, a personal favourite of mine has to be Legend of Legaia on the PS1. It had such a unique battle system and was quite difficult for an RPG as well 🔥
I've been watching your vids all day and man you earned a new sub from me! The videos have been great and I can't wait to see more. And from a fellow content creator I'm super jealous with how crisp and clean your voice is!!
Dragon Quest 8 and Persona 4 are Great JRPG's that I played this JRPG genre is not a popular genre in South Africa n However this genre became one of my favorites. Those 2 games battle system weren't my favorites when I started playing them as a person who's used to playing the later Final Fantasy X to XV but I ended up enjoying those games n played Persona 4 Golden on the Vita n Ps3 on multiple occasions. I have to say Persona stands head n shoulders in storytelling and making you care about the players on the team n even the enemies...no other or few do it better than Persona in the whole the game industry.
I was fortunate to be able to rent Chrono Trigger from a video store back in the SNES days, and it was indeed amazing. Only game I've been sad to finish. If they ever do a remake R version, as with Star Ocean: The Second Story R, then that could be one of the JRPG sensations of the century.
SMT V is the jam. Like you said, if you like Persona, which is based off of SMT. What I like to throw out there is that it's literally the OG Pokémon that came out way before it. Which allows you to catch a wild slowking and lets you devolve him into his potential lower evolutions or branching paths. So you can devolve your slowking into a slowpoke or slobro or even a shellder, then you can evolve him into a cloyster. So you can use the same monsters and switch them into new guys or clone destroy fuse, etcetera. You can have 2 or more of the same monsters on your team with entirely different abilities. You could through "breeding" essentially have yourself a charizard that has not only immunity to water and every other element, but basically have the same effect as if that charizard were a blastoise then that charizard could potentially heal from being hit with water. Meaning besides resistances, they could have abilities they have no reason having. Like a bulbasaur shooting flamethrower. All of this to say you can pass all these abilities and resistances and strengths from all your Pokémon into you your character avatar. So, just saying if you want to be Rimuru Tempest from That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime, then that's what this game is. Except instead of Pokémon its all the legends, myths, fairy tales, historical figures, and all religions ever swirling and twirling into one pot. As in Lucifer, Satan, and The Devil are all different characters with their own motivations and plans. Meanwhile, the same principle applies for every demon, angel, or anything you've ever heard of. And they're all pulling and tempting you in every other direction. You can choose whatever you want, good, evil, and neutral for every moment along the way. Meanwhile, your choices affect the apocalypse, so no pressure. Just focus on monster collecting and becoming UNLIMITED POWER!!
Glad to see someone picking P4G over P5. I have hundreds of hours in the modern Personas and while P5 is an improvement in terms of gameplay, it was a let down in so many aspects, specially from a writing and storytelling perspective. I'm afraid that I'm one of the few people that think the game has many flaws, very glaring in my opinion but most people claim it to be a near perfect game when I think it's far from it.
A great list that brings me a lot of nostalgia. I feel fortunate to have played most of these games looking back. I do feel Suikoden 1 or 2 need a spot on this list and also Valkyrie Profile both of which pioneered very unique contributions to JRPGs. Though credit for the side-scrolling and action combat for Valkyrie Profile was likely inspired by either Symphony of the Night or Tales of Destiny, they are both action RPGs while I consider Valkyrie Profile a full RPG with platforming elements.
That's the problem I have with older games, they are just nostalgic, anytime I go back to play these older games I feel they are not as good as I remember. Sometimes I feel like we fool ourselves into thinking older games were better when it's actually not the case
Deserves to be on the list: Nier Automata - the game that has multiple routes for each and different endings and the story goes deeper once you play more and more. Such a fantastic experience that the community grows from niche to popularity from 2017. Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door - the GOAT of Mario RPG genre and not even close. Breathtaking story and great memorable characters from the community today. Now that the remake is coming, we can truly replay the same experience to the next generation of gamers who never play this masterpiece. Fire Emblem: Path of Raidiance & Radiant Dawn - Yes, Judgral is still the best but it is only from Japan. Three Houses is a great game overall but it felt incomplete and the gameplay isn’t that great that qualifies to be on the list. Tellius deserves to be more recognized with its character progression and deep story (doubt a remake will come for FE4 is having a remake next). Xenosaga - known as the black sheep of the xeno series, however, the series is no different to its story and charcters. The unfortunate failure of the series brought Bandai’s confidence to cut the series after three games (xenosaga 3 is a masterpiece). Maybe one day we’ll have a remake of such games, for the fact a shareholder request square enix to remake Xenogears).
The thing majorly holding Path of Radiance back is the gamespeed sadly. If it was fixed, then it would easily be a top ranking FE game because it has basically everything. Story, gameplay, dialogue, it even has stuff that the series usually does not(or in lesser quantities) like modular text depending on how many died or when certain supports were accessed. Sadly, it has recently lost some favor in the fanbase for also being one of the easiest games in the series. Also, I thought Xenosaga is often cited to be at least as good as the other Xenogames, or at least all the titles except the original Episode 2, it being as controversial as it was is most likely a big reason why the 1+2 remake on DS exists.
@@therealjaystone2344 Lmao. How in the world does it classify as a port when everything except for some parts of the script are diffrent? You know, remade.
@@lpfan4491 it is the inferior version to play from a console version and nothing much changed other than the limited graphics and storage. A remake is a game that was remade fully with newer gameplay style such as RE4R.
Great list. I’ve either played them, or I own them and haven’t played them yet. Except for Persona 4 Golden. I haven’t bought that one yet. So happy that you included DQVIII. I’ve played that several times. Thanks for the well-presented video!
Finallly, someone putting FF 9 on their list over 7. My apologies to the FF7 Chads in the comments, but 9 is far and away the better game on the Ps1. Lost Odyssey is the Final Fantasy 13 the world deserved.
I wish they would release a complete Chrono Trigger remake built from the ground up to be something like the modern Dragon Quest 11. I also wish there was a full Chrono Trigger anime telling the entire game story in modern anime form.
Incase you haven't played it, try out Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana. One of the greatest games I've ever played and it should be included in all 10/10 JRPG lists.
Lost Odyssey is one of those games that makes me wonder why they haven't made a remake for it. Alot of times when I see Top 10 JRPG lists, Lost Odyssey is mentioned. You're right that it came out in a time where JRPGs weren't as popular as they are now, which is sad because it's such an amazing game! Guess it will be lost on the Xbox forever (no pun intended).
Very good, if a bit safe, list. Also, I had to sub given the extremely solid production values, script, and editing. I'm looking forward to dipping into your back catalog and seeing what comes in the near future.
My Top 10 JRPG of All Time are: 1. Persona 5 Royal 2. Persona 4 Golden 3. XenoBlade Chronicles 3 Including Future Redeems 4. XenoBlade Chronicles Definitive Edition 5. Fire Emblem Three Houses 6. Lost Odyssey 7. FF7 8. FF9 9. Triangle Strategy 10. Fire Emblem Engage
SMT V needs to be ported to playstation and xbox or something. The switch can barely run it which made me scared to play it cause i wasnt gonna let my switch blow up trying to play it lol
great list, two notes : as far as Trails goes, any first in sequence will do. In the sky has aged a bit, Cold Steel is excellent and it really does not matter what order you play the main themes. Also, Chrono Trigger remains the original fans fave but new players will probably find Chrono Cross a much finer game on so many levels.
There are many jrpgs that i've yet to play, simply because i play other genres and games like PSO and FFXI had me playing those and neglecting many other games. My favourites that i've played were, Eternal Sonata Lost Odyssey and Final Fantasy VII (a port of the original). But i've still to play many FF games yet.
I would argue Trails in the Sky SC for that Azure spot. Its the game that took legend of heroes series sky high and specifically Trails on going until today
I keep seeing people sing the praises of Xenoblade, and I don't get it. I've tried playing the second and third games and they feel like single player MMO's with stories out of a c-tier anime. Lost Odyssey is a forgotten classic though. Also, needs more Suikoden 2. :P
I like this list while not all would make my top 10 most would definitely make a top 30 and that's still saying a lot also even though FFX is my favorite game of all time I totally agree with you picking FF9 I think the game is wonderful it's the best ff game mixing old and new and should be the face of the series
Sure! The first game is Trails in the Sky and the first three would be Trails in the Sky, Trails in the Sky SC, and Trails the 3rd. These three games are the only ones that aren’t on consoles so if you want to play them you need to play them on Steam.
To continue @slam-zany's reply, the series is meant to be experienced in order. Other than the Crossbell duology occurring parallel with the first 2 Cold Steel games, the series is sequential, with later games building on the events of earlier games and a grand over-arcing plot. So the full ordered list is; 1. Trails in the Sky 2. Trails in the Sky SC 3. Trails in the Sky 3rd 4. Trails from Zero (Crossbell duology 1) 5. Trails to Azure (Crossbell duology 2) 6. Trails of Cold Steel 7. Trails of Cold Steel II 8. Trails of Cold Steel III 9. Trails of Cold Steel IV 10. Trails into Reverie (sort of a Crossbell 3 plus Cold Steel 5)(my personal favorite story) 11. Trails through Daybreak (currently Japan only, English version coming mid 2024) 12. Trails through Daybreak: Crimson Sin (currently Japan only) 13-20?. Not made yet, but 'Trails into Reverie' (game 10) was declared the 'halfway' mark
I loved Shin Megami Tensei V and the differents endings you can get and the way you can talk with foes. Kudos to Idun ! Now I´m gonna play SMTIV and Persona 5. Personal opinion, I like more FFVI than Chrono, but they are both top quality.
First of all, respect for not just shoe horning FF7 in here. I get why it's considered "the best in the series" and I respect what it's done for jrpgs as a whole, but I don't think it's top 3 let alone the best in the series. Secondly, there's a surprising lack of Legend of Dragoon on here. I get that that game has not aged well aesthetically, but if you can get past the graphics in my opinion it's one of if not the best jrpg ever made...at least of the ones I've played which has been a lot.
@@slam-zany Anyone who thinks Kongol is a bad party member because he has low mag res 'too late in the game' definitely need to play it again. Kongol is a beast.
That is a problem though I mean for the Rrails series if you aren't already in it you kind of have to start from the beginning and FF7 has something similar spanning a story over 3 games and 2 consoles. Various games franchise but when you make it so intricate, expensie, and or hard to get into then you get flops
This list is solid. I've beaten most of these and many of them would make my own top 10. That said, when was the last time you played Skies on Dreamcast? I ask because it keeps popping up on these lists but when I played it a few years ago it was a real chore to get through. I get why people love it, it starts out great and the premise is awesome, but it has real issues that reveal themselves once you're a midway through the game. In particular the combat and magic systems are pretty bad and since you spend most of your time in combat, it makes the game a real slog.
I agree and I would definitely love a remake with some major quality of life fixes. This game has just really stuck with me over the years and looking back I do feel like Skies of Arcadia paved the way for a lot of really cool things with its world and story that do stand the test of time. Crossing my fingers for a nice remake for this one though!
Story in Xenoblade Chronicles 2 was great, my problem with it is half the game is a tutorial. No game needs to be so complex to require a class to play it. @@Nintentips.
@@keithcastillo5434that’s true I think I loved it so much for the story. I think I would agree the gameplay and tutorial integration of Xenoblade 2 is not great compared to other games and even the other Xenoblade games.
I do not know whether I should try another Xenoblade game because of Xenoblade Chronicles 2 long tutorial and because I am in college now. @@Nintentips.
@@keithcastillo5434 ooh ya that might be tough I would say that in terms of tutorials three and one are way better explained and feel so much more understandable but the time commitment it still huge for a college student and it might take you a really long time to complete. The problem with me on trying out trails game. I dont know where to start what trails should i do first. Btw, i only have the Switch so i dont know what game to start with. I agree with SMTV btw, amazing game.

Also, I thought Xenosaga is often cited to be at least as good as the other Xenogames, or at least all the titles except the original Episode 2, it being as controversial as it was is most likely a big reason why the 1+2 remake on DS exists.
@@lpfan4491 1+2 on the DS is a port not a remake
@@therealjaystone2344 Lmao. How in the world does it classify as a port when everything except for some parts of the script are diffrent? You know, remade.
@@lpfan4491 it is the inferior version to play from a console version and nothing much changed other than the limited graphics and storage. A remake is a game that was remade fully with newer gameplay style such as RE4R.
Xenosaga 3 is my 3rd favorite game ever first being trails from zero and second being trails from azure
At last someone gives skies of arcadia the place it deserves
Great list. I’ve either played them, or I own them and haven’t played them yet. Except for Persona 4 Golden. I haven’t bought that one yet. So happy that you included DQVIII. I’ve played that several times. Thanks for the well-presented video!
I always get my Trails mixed up with my Tales.
You gotta play Trails man. Just do it! 🤣
Finallly, someone putting FF 9 on their list over 7. My apologies to the FF7 Chads in the comments, but 9 is far and away the better game on the Ps1. Lost Odyssey is the Final Fantasy 13 the world deserved.
I've always loved the Dragon Quest franchise and played Dragon warrior along with Final Fantasy as a kid.
Can’t wait to see how you feel about Cold Steel!
Definitely look out for a video on that!
Xenogears is a very very great game, I haven't encountered any story that could beat this
I'd love to see the Dark Cloud series get a re-boot. one of my favorite series from my childhood
I agreed with every word you said about Skies of Arcadia. I hope to see the day someone remake it.
Trails series and ffix! Got a new sub man u got a good taste and perspective
Thank you!!
I love DQ8, would love a remake with DQ11's graphics and skill system or at least a HD remaster.
DQ8 not being on ps4 is criminal
@@nezkeys79 I agree, it should be on PS4 and them some.
Really great game!
The algorithm decided I should watch this video. I'm glad it did, great video, looking forward to more.
FF9 is the best final fantasy, good pick.
Xenogears needs to come on switch!!!!
Very good, if a bit safe, list. Also, I had to sub given the extremely solid production values, script, and editing. I'm looking forward to dipping into your back catalog and seeing what comes in the near future.
Thank you for the kind words and Welcome to the channel!!
Neat!!! I’ll be checking out some thx to this list!!!!
My Top 10 JRPG of All Time are:
1. Persona 5 Royal
2. Persona 4 Golden
3. XenoBlade Chronicles 3 Including Future Redeems
4. XenoBlade Chronicles Definitive Edition
5. Fire Emblem Three Houses
6. Lost Odyssey
7. FF7
8. FF9
9. Triangle Strategy
10. Fire Emblem Engage
This is an amazing list! Fire Emblem Three Houses is so good.
@@slam-zanyThanks Dude and Your List is Great Too
Some very good choices in this list but Trials of Mana remake should be in a top 10 imo
Thanks! I love that game. I actually have that one in my top 10 JRPG remakes video. 😀
Nice to see Xenogears here, this shows that you know what you are saying.
What a list! Perfection
Lost Odyssey is a game I will always recommend to people, really outstanding!
Great list. I would add Suikoden 2 and Grandia.
Sega’s continuing aversion to money means they will probably never do anything with Skies of Arcadia sadly 😔
Star Ocean 2 R. The depth of this game is amazing.
SMT V needs to be ported to playstation and xbox or something. The switch can barely run it which made me scared to play it cause i wasnt gonna let my switch blow up trying to play it lol
I only got one thing to say.
"Fei and Elly FTW!"
Period!
great list, two notes : as far as Trails goes, any first in sequence will do. In the sky has aged a bit, Cold Steel is excellent and it really does not matter what order you play the main themes. Also, Chrono Trigger remains the original fans fave but new players will probably find Chrono Cross a much finer game on so many levels.
Yeah Chrono Cross is absolute awesome
I have to try Lost Odyssey and Xenoblade series!
There are many jrpgs that i've yet to play, simply because i play other genres and games like PSO and FFXI had me playing those and neglecting many other games. My favourites that i've played were,
Eternal Sonata
Lost Odyssey and
Final Fantasy VII (a port of the original). But i've still to play many FF games yet.
Should look into Radiata Stories for the PS2 or Radiant Historia for the DS (I think) both really great games.
Skies of Arcadia is the greatest rpg of all time
I would argue Trails in the Sky SC for that Azure spot.
Lost Odyssey is definitely a classic
If you make 2 more top 10 JRPGs videos lists i will subscribe to you ok alright keept it up bro good job dude
I would like to play SMT5....on my PS4.
I like this list while not all would make my top 10 most would definitely make a top 30 and that's still saying a lot also even though FFX is my favorite game of all time I totally agree with you picking FF9 I think the game is wonderful it's the best ff game mixing old and new and should be the face of the series
Can someone tell me the first Trails game to even start with?
Or maybe the first 3, so I have a plan going forward on how to tackle the series.
Sure! The first game is Trails in the Sky and the first three would be Trails in the Sky, Trails in the Sky SC, and Trails the 3rd.
These three games are the only ones that aren’t on consoles so if you want to play them you need to play them on Steam.
To continue @slam-zany's reply, the series is meant to be experienced in order. Other than the Crossbell duology occurring parallel with the first 2 Cold Steel games, the series is sequential, with later games building on the events of earlier games and a grand over-arcing plot. So the full ordered list is;
1. Trails in the Sky
2. Trails in the Sky SC
3. Trails in the Sky 3rd
4. Trails from Zero (Crossbell duology 1)
5. Trails to Azure (Crossbell duology 2)
6. Trails of Cold Steel
7. Trails of Cold Steel II
8. Trails of Cold Steel III
9. Trails of Cold Steel IV
10. Trails into Reverie (sort of a Crossbell 3 plus Cold Steel 5)(my personal favorite story)
11. Trails through Daybreak (currently Japan only, English version coming mid 2024)
12. Trails through Daybreak: Crimson Sin (currently Japan only)
13-20?. Not made yet, but 'Trails into Reverie' (game 10) was declared the 'halfway' mark
i see lost odyssey & skies of arcadia =auto liked and subscibed 😊😊😊
No one ever talks about Crismon Gem Sega. Its a great game 😊
I loved Shin Megami Tensei V and the differents endings you can get and the way you can talk with foes. Kudos to Idun ! Now I´m gonna play SMTIV and Persona 5. Personal opinion, I like more FFVI than Chrono, but they are both top quality.
Thumbs up for lost odyssey
Have you played chained echoes ?
I just started it actually and it’s incredible! I’m really enjoying it.
I would include FF6,7,10 & Tactics because they are masterpieces
First of all, respect for not just shoe horning FF7 in here. I get why it's considered "the best in the series" and I respect what it's done for jrpgs as a whole, but I don't think it's top 3 let alone the best in the series.
Secondly, there's a surprising lack of Legend of Dragoon on here. I get that that game has not aged well aesthetically, but if you can get past the graphics in my opinion it's one of if not the best jrpg ever made...at least of the ones I've played which has been a lot.
I couldn’t agree more. In fact I have a personal top 10 JRPG video I did a while back, and Legend of Dragoon is on it. 🙂
@@slam-zany Anyone who thinks Kongol is a bad party member because he has low mag res 'too late in the game' definitely need to play it again. Kongol is a beast.
Not sure how SMT V gets rated so high.
Good list bro
Great fucking list
Don't own a switch and already see two in the thumbnail
I hope the rumored FF9 remake will still be turn based.
Star Ocean: Second Story Remake (2023). I would put it above FF 7 or 10. It was phenomenal.
That is a problem though I mean for the Rrails series if you aren't already in it you kind of have to start from the beginning and FF7 has something similar spanning a story over 3 games and 2 consoles. Various games franchise but when you make it so intricate, expensie, and or hard to get into then you get flops
SMT Nocturne!
Ys Viii Lacrimosa of Dana is so great. Xenoblade Chronicles 2 only the other hand is kinda eh.
I loved Xenoblade 2 so much though! Although maybe I could agree its not a ten
I remember it took me a little over a year to complete 3 and 2 because of school and my other interests and activities as I don’t prioritize gaming very often.
The problem with me on trying out trails game. I dont know where to start what trails should i do first. Btw, i only have the Switch so i dont know what game to start with. I agree with SMTV btw, amazing game.
Cold steel 1
Xenogears letsgooo!!!!
tl;dw - Everything on the list is just a timeless classic. 🤣
I don't understand how you could give SMT V a 10/10 when it's widely criticized for its story and characters.
I love the selection.. it has been one of the best I've ever played.. I love everything out it.. the music, everything
Xenoblade Saga 10/10 for Switch 👌
persona series is absolutely clear of smt series fr no p5 is criminal too
How or in what platform can I play Xenogears?
Ps1. I would re-buy if they remaster it. Xeno Saga also fun, but nowhere as deep as Xenogears.
Persona 4 is a masterpiece, but persona 5 is the best place to start if your new to the persona series
A new player might be turned away by how much obnoxious unnecessary handholding p5 has throughout the whole game.
i was really a fan of JRPG when i was 12 to 18 years old. but now i think i already outgrew it...
