    I agree. I actually think Opeth is more subtly polished than DT but in an "organic" way, not in a manufactured way. DT lately has sounded rather "manufactured", not a lot of variety or actual musicality. Sad, because they're fantastic musicians, I just wish they'd get more creative than Petrucci's usual rifs. And Ruddess is an amazing pianist but he insists on that freaking '80s pinball sound.

      *7 years later* Yeah, I see that too. I heard all of the musicians in DT graduated from some esteemed musical establishment, and their music imo does have a bit of a text book feel, which ruins it for me. They truly are fantastic musicians, but DT's music is lacking character I feel. Maybe they aim more to impress the listeners rather than to put emotion in the music, but truly I have no saying in that. Different thing with Opeth -- their songs are so full of character you just can't look away, their soul is big and luscious and beautiful.

      Necro post for sure......
      An elongated drum solo can give the other band members a breather so they can go pee, smoke a cig, get a drink, ect, ect. Or it can also give the techs/soundmen a chance to change out a bad cord that's making a buzzing noise or troubleshoot other problems that can happen in live settings. Instead of stopping the show for this they can say "Hey Axe, can you do a drum solo for about 8 minutes while we go x, y, & z please." So it isn't always about the drummer trying to show off.

    talented". I really do think it's wise that Mikael was the frontman and really the creative mind behind Opeth all these years, the other guys are amazing musicians but I think he's really the creative genius in the band and I'm glad he's stayed as such, he really is "Opeth". Don't think Petrucci has had that much freedom in DT.

  • @GhANeC

    Porcelain Heart is not from a vintage sounding prog rock album. That simple.
    I realize their whole visuals and soundcheck and instruments and tuning etc are all made to accommodate their recent inclination for that sound. That's even expected.
    Just wish they'd find a way to minimize "sacrificing" their older songs as well to that.
    Not a matter of live being different from cd. It was just played differently before the Heritage tours.
    Not a big deal anyways, I like that they're still playing them.

      Michiel v. Tienhoven I think technical talent exposes the shallow songwriting skills of most rockers. That's why prog metal sounds like garbage.
      I bet if Kurt Cobain could shred, the songs would sound like crap too.
      In terms of talent and taste, one of the few ones is buckethead. Incredible skill, but also crazy wide palate of genres. He's a genius, hands down.

  • @Daan7000
    @Daan7000 11 лет назад +3

    I find DT a bit overproduced like: "We're DT we have to make songs with odd time signatures otherwise we're not cool". Like it's going beyond what actually matters; playing what you think sounds best. And I think Opeth is a more allround band, but not too polished like DT.They have deathmetal and ballads but also progrock jazzy stuff etc.

  • @WybjornVR
    @WybjornVR 11 лет назад +4

    Depends how you define talent. Petrucci can shred (I'd argue that Akesson is similar in skill there) but he sure as hell doesn't have the creativity Mikael does by a long shot. That counts for more in my books.

    • @gareginasatryan6761
      @gareginasatryan6761 7 лет назад

      JackobMan Some of Petrucci's solos as just going up and down a scale. He has to learn from people like alex Skolnick, Macalpine, or Vai. These people's solos actually go somewhere and are musical.

    • @gareginasatryan6761
      @gareginasatryan6761 7 лет назад +1

      JackobMan no, akesson doesn't touch him in technicality. Then again, it's about songwriting then skill. Pink Floyd can't play anything other than blues scale solos, but they are legends.

    That's true, he's written the majority of DT's music and lyrics as far as I understand. He's a fantastic musician and I don't want to detract from that. However, compared to Mikael's unrelenting creativity and vast stylistic diversity as well as his mastery of the multitude of genres he's incorporated into his music, the fact that he has the best growls and most amazing clean vocals, has yet to make an album that feels repetitive or boring, etc etc, I don't think it's fair to say DT is "more

    I really like the way this drum solo was done. Finally a drum solo that actually makes sense as a piece of music by itself, and not just a big double bass, show off mush that we see so often. Reminds me of Neil Peart somehow, I know they don't have much to do each other though.

    and yes, i know the guitar tunes are a bit off but i liked it that way, opeth always had a 70's prog inspirations(mostly because thats what akerfeldt claims to listen to) and i liked it that way, i know, the original is a piece of art itself, but this version is any bit worst. i think.

    Yes, I've even responded back to such negative comments, explaining a bit further. It's not like I'm a mindless Heritage-basher or something. probably someone needed to go to the bathroom or mike felt his throat needed water.
      he didn't do that just for show off or for musical reasons. there are a lot of things that can interrupt a concert, even during a song, but you can't simply stop and say "hey, you payed money on this, but could you wait 5 minutes so i can solve that problem?". that is when a unnecessary drum solo happens.

    No offense but, what's the point exactly if you could understand it? do you wish they had 2 sets of different rig for the gigs? Heritage isn't my favorite to be honest, and i like their older stuffs more. But i think their sound system is pretty decent and could deliver the old stuffs... and we cant expecting Mike's brutal growl last forever, so their changes of tone is understandable in my opinion.

    I agree. It sounds very chaotic but apparently it was extremely difficult to nail down on the album. I still can't for the life of me figure out what people miss so much about Peter and Lopez, they were both good but one didn't contribute creatively and didn't want to be there, and the other (while amazing) didn't seem to contribute as much that "stands out" or "fits just right" like Axe does. Two different lineups for two different developmental stages.

    can someone explain me the main riff that is repeated through out the song by
    Fredrik Åkesson, starting from 9:50 , it seems like some key of minor D on 2-3 frets, and on other-hand mostly i saw below tab online, which is quite different
    E|------------------|
    B|------------------|
    G|------------------|
    D|----7h9h10p9p7----|
    A|--7---------------|

      Jack Mayo I don't like metal drum solos since I think most of them are the same...I just thought that his solos were a bit unoriginal, I think he could do better...If you want to orchestrate a drumset in a solo you have to find a certain pattern that can be phrased. Like the period that marks the end of a sentence. If not, it would feel like an endless solo and you will loose the audience.

    I was saying that their instruments, kit and live sound have been partially replaced and retuned to make the band sound like a vintage prog rock act.
    I understand that they're supporting their recent Heritage style. But the problem is that their older songs are "sacrificed" to this new style and sound when played live.
    Although I understand that logistically it would be hard to avoid this, even if they wanted to.

      ***** People just assume that the SE is really cheap sounding and honestly, my SE is one of the best sounding guitars I've ever played. And in all seriousness, I haven't played a real PRS that felt as good to play as my SE Custom 24. I think that there are cheaper, worse SE models, like I've heard, although I'm not sure if it's true, that the Santana SE is really bad, but still, for $700 or $800 they can make quite a guitar. They don't waste money on stupid things. They make them in a good factory in Korea, build their own pickups to save money and their own tuners, but they sound fantastic, and they do little things like the flame maple top is a vaneer, but it wouldn't affect the tone much, if any. The guitar is built to sound and perform well with no extra bells and whistles. I love how surprised people are with the SE line. I can't recommend it enough.
