British Rowing Trials 2024 April Beach Sprints

- Hello RUclipsrs! In this episode I attend the British Rowing Beach Sprint Trials for 2024. The racing includes up to 3 time trials where you run, slalom around bouys and send it back to the beach. Depending on how you do in these time trials then decides whether or not you go onto the next stage which would be on the water testing in doubles. I had a great time down in Bournemouth for my second beach sprints regatta. I am stepping on every time I get on the water and it is a lot of fun doing something a little different but still with some familiar parts. I hope you enjoy the adventure!

The recovery on the second trial was very good. However that illustrates the randomness that I don't really like in beach sprints. You did nothing wrong but a wave hit you that might not have been there for your competitiors. How did you feel rowing between the two outer buoys? Even after many years of open water rowing I have always been uncomfortable with waves coming from the side.

Inspiring effort, spirit, attitude. Thank you. It looks like practicing the ins and outs hundreds of times can shave off seconds. I do wonder if your height is a disadvantage at the ins and outs - the agility more of a challenge?

You yammed it and made a very good effort. Following seas are always a challenge and when they over-power you it stinks...
Will the distance not alter as the tide goes in/out? Or am I a bit thick......
The distance on the water can change with the tides yes but the overall distance stays the same.
Here the tide doesn’t really move too much but at some beaches can become a big issue!
Hi Cam, armchair coach here. I see you're in my old stomping ground this week! Recognized the East Cliff zig-zag immediately. This is where I learned to row. Just on the west side of the Bournemouth Pier was the Westover RC - they are no longer there. I spent a few years there in late 70s/ early 80s before moving to Poole ARC. These clubs row in the Hants & Dorset RA - check it out - clubs along the south coast as far as Herne Bay (rowed there too when I was at uni) with the Coast RA. A different kind of coastal rowing but great fun. Enjoy the rough stuff.

As suspected, this is way more challenging than inland rowing as so many variables to deal with and most of those are literally ’luck of the draw’.

Keep up the good work. Ocean rowing is a bit different from lake rowing. You have a very powerful stroke. It is just those pesky waves can throw your rhythm off. I have a lot of wind here in Corpus Christi, Texas. Makes you pull harder on one side, which I do not like.

The LA Olympics in 2028 will be awesome. Rowing Ireland and British Rowing are both ramping up preparations to compete in beach sprints.
Gutted I passed up the opportunity to have a go at this as I was training with my crew for the coastal season. You will have to post if you are attending any of the South Coast races this year
