  • Bio F.R.E.A.K.S. is a 3D fighting video game released by Midway in 1998. It was originally planned for arcades. Prototypes of the game were tested at arcades, but the final arcade release was canceled (although a ROM image of the prototype was eventually dumped and works in MAME) and the game was later released for the PlayStation, Nintendo 64 and PC.

As a kid, I was with my friend at blockbuster and his mom told us we could rent 1 game but we had to decide together. I convinced him to rent this but his mom said I was a bad influence so we settled on Conker's Bad Fur Day.... we were DELIGHTFULLY surprised.

I feel like a lot of people didn’t really know of this title. When I found it, it was in a bargain bin at a video game store so I figured I’d give it a go since it was so cheap. I would have loved to see a sequel delve further into the lore and have better graphics, but what I want and what makes money for the studios are two different things.

I loved this game, I was younger than 10 years old when I first played this. I remember playing this with my older brother a lot and having so much fun. I don't know why but the older consoles were the best at making games for having fun with family and friends.

We, my friends and I, played this game all the time! It is one of my favorite N64 games. I had forgotten the name of the game, but not the game itself. I just learned the name again; so, I decided to look up reviews. This game was awesome for the system and the time.

This was my favorite fighting game of all time largely because of this, and the hazardous environments. The main reason I had no problems with it was i always played with my young friends who insisted on playing more melee than just shooting at eachother

I remember this game in Arcade, I was waaaay too young but it made an impression instantly. I’d see it at the pizza place we’d go to but was never allowed to play. I thought it was cool as hell and settled for watching others or just drool in awe of the animations and screens when no one was playing. I’ve tried hunting for the title and could never find it-or people would say “time killers” and they’d think I’m crazy, and that no such game existed.
This game was awesome, the arcade cabinet was just an amazing experience and piece of art.

I think the big problem was Midway was trying too hard to make another extreme arcade brawler when many gamers like myself were looking for a lot more depth in terms of play options like in a Soul Blade for example.

you have to use the thrust to get in close or do aerial attach. I really like being able to cut off limbs in this game. More modern games need to do this. It's not a bad idea flying around shooting and beating limbs off.

My favorite part about the game is the concept of limbs being shot, cut or ripped off. Me and my older brother fought each other. I still love the character models and being able to fly and be in a 3D arena. I also played Mortal Kombat Trilogy on n64. Sometimes facing my brother. My favorite character was Sektor.

This was a good weekend rental game. It had a great look, idea, levels, being able to dismember an opponent, etc. The core game play just wasn't worth all of the great ideas they had. Maybe with some fine tuning it could have been a lot of fun. Maybe it could have been an action game with a story line and you would have boss fights similar to the battle arena game you see here. The 2 player versus mode could be the same.

This game was in a hidden memory within my brain it took me about 20 min to find haha I was looking up “monster fighting original Xbox games” at first but then I remembered how I came across the game in the first place , I was a little kid when my brother on his way home from work found the main circuit board of an n64 game(no cartridge just the electronics inside of what would be an n64 game). He took it home to me and not me nor him knew what game it was let alone if it would work. So to our surprise it did and it was this game, it was the most fun game I remember playing back in the day and I’m glad to have found it once more, BIO Freaks.

Had it on Playstation. It was na OK fighter and I liked it more than MK4. The problem with it was exactly as you pointed out, turtling and evasive gameplay was encouraged by the games mechanics. Eventually I came to play the game just for the dismemberment and stages rather than for the fight itself.

When I first played this, I loved it because of the interesting characters / storyline... But when I returned to it, I found the game to be incredibly frustrating to play, and felt extremely sluggish on the controls. Maybe it's because of the gun thing as you had pointed out. My guess on why they didn't do a 2nd run of this game is because this one played like a ham sandwich.

Holy shit this gameplay was weird. I remember I beat it like my second time playing it by picking the Minotaur guy and just spamming the missles. Dunno if the move was OP or what. The hardest thing about the game was discovering the abilities. My friend was all salty I beat the game like that and I remember just thinking "what do you expect?". I had seen my cousins beat Mortal Kombat by turning on Auto on a turbo controller, putting it down and letting Liu Kang bicycle kick through the entire game. Bio Freaks played more like an arena game like Bushido Blade than something like Street Fighter, matches could last a long time and there was no balance, if you found one good move, there was no reason to use a different one.

  • @scorpion9199
    @scorpion9199 6 лет назад

It’s true, there really is so much to like about this game from a design standpoint, but the actual engine is completely unbalanced. I had several fights with Bullseye where he exclusively used his basic projectile attack. That’s just completely broken both in regards to the AI that spams the same move and the fact that it basically works. Limiting the projectile moves the same way they do the hover ability would have been a huge step in the right direction, although that’s just the most blatant of many issues this game has that Midway’s developers seemed unwilling to fix with their N64 fighters.

Overall like the game, but found it kinda difficult for me., like Eternal Champions for Mega Drive, super cool and impressive fighting game, but impossible harrd.

Can you edit your reviews with a final score out of ten in your conclusion? You pretty much sat on the fence with this one... I guess you would of given it a 5?

I’ve never wanted to give scores as I personally think too many people rely on them and they just cause people to argue needlessly in the comments. I give my opinions, let people make their own minds up and then play the game if they think it suits them. Generally people who’ve been here for some time get a feel for if they tend to agree or disagree with me and then judge it from there

I played this on Playstation and didn't care much for it. It had some good ideas but didn't feel right to me.

im not a fighting game fan but they all feel the same to me.. sure you have to memorize different button combos for different games but the same is true for characters within the same game. I just never liked the fact that you can't just pick up and play them really without just jumping around and doing super basic moves. this just makes it so you have to memorize a list of moves to play the game which ruines it. I think that is the main reason i only like super smash bros and why so many others do to. It has just as much or more depth and skill gap as these typical fighting games but you can easily pick up and play it and learn the controls right away since the move inputs are the same for every charcter and all you have to do is learn how to use each move. I'm amazed that the outdated and crap style of the non smash bros controls even still exists. I guess i can give some credit to tekken as it has a pretty different fighting system as well but you still end up having to memorize a long button combo to get any good at that too.

+nate You should end your comment after "not a fighting game fan" you're making a fool of yourself in every sentance which follows that!
Just stick to SB and leave the rest of that genre alone, please!

It's an unfair comparison to compare it to MK4.
It's more like an improved Dark Rift.

I do t think it's too unfair - this and mk4 were both designed for the arcade at the same time, they only changed their mind on this and gave the code to be ported to n64 because they felt the 2 games were too similar
