Rob’s college degree is in opera and Austin has a musical theater degree but also studied opera for a time in college. Up until this video, Rob hasn’t sang opera in 15 years and credits Austin for talking him into doing this. This was Austin’s way of showcasing Rob’s opera training.

I often think that every member of Home Free awakens in the morning with the single thought of "How can we shock everyone this time?"
You mentioned The Butts. You will see nothing there to remind you of anything that they have done that you have seen before.
    Shock and awe!

You have found yourself exposed to the best a capella group ever. 5 part harmonies in How Great Thou Art, Brothers in Arms, and Helplessly Hoping-a capella at its finest. Their harmonies are tight and fit together perfectly. Though billed as a country band, they sing all genres. They became a country band at the Sing Off. Live performances are as good as the videos. I'm giving you a link to a performance they did in a tent for the fans when the show was cancelled due to severe weather. You can hear the power in Rob and Austin's voice. This was done with no microphones, just voice projection.

This one has me convinced that Rob's a chameleon. He sounds completely different in this than in anything else I've heard him do. When he sings blues, he's a blues singer. When he raps, he's a rapper. When he sings pop, he's a pop singer. When he sings country, he's a country singer. This is just an example of how deep the talent is in Home Free. Each of the guys in the group is willing to step back and let others shine even though each and every one of them is top notch talent.
After the "Butts Remix/Medley", maybe check out Home Free's cover of "End of the Road" to see yet another side of Rob.

I would suggest that you try listening to Tim Faust (the one you said was the lead singer in Forever and Ever Amen) singing Misty Mountains with Peter Hollens. Then listen to Tim Faust sing Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow/Stay. It will give you a much greater concept of his 5 octave range.
    Other Home Free songs are
    Man of Constant Sorrow
    End of the Road
When A Man Loves A Woman
Ring of Fire with Avi Kaplan
    Amazed
Do You Hear What I Hear
From Here To The Moon and Back featuring an upcoming country singer Maggie Baugh. She is in her very early 20's and plays multiple instruments. She began playing classical violin at age 2, by age 7 she was performing on stage at Carnegie Hall. She has an amazing voice as well.

Did you notice Austin's sigh of relief after the final "Vincerò", right before the closing of the video? 🙂
They've been so brave to cover this "aria". AND they did a wonderful job.🙂
Rob had some Opera training, but he didn't sing anything Opera in the last 15 years. 🙂
Austin had some classical training as well, but not really Opera. 🙂

If you want to hear unmatched harmonies and a soft driving deep bass to pound home an emotional song listen to "Brothers in Arms." If you want to hear that sweet southern yodel, swamp sounds, and imaginary southern instruments like the jaw harp and harmonica, listen to "Man of Constant Sorrow." If you want a pick-me-up without that pot of coffee you need "Listen to the Music." More impecable harmonies are "Auld Lang Syne," "How Great Thou Art," and "The sound of Silence." Another pick-me-up is Try Everything (Zootopia) Feeling patriotic? Home Free partners up with Lee Greenwood and the USAF Singing Sargents "God Bless the USA."
Overload, I know, but they have so many songs to choose from. Good luck in that rabbit hole. 😄

I don’t know how many times I’ve seen this video. I knew Rob would be great, but I was unprepared for HOW great he is. If Rob ever makes an opera album, I’m here for it! Some HF suggestions: “End of the Road”, Rob lead, and he’s at his soulful best. “I Can’t Outrun You”, Chance lead(baritone/bass), pure 5 part harmony, and hauntingly beautiful. Chance also directed the video. “Castle On the Hill” and “Take Me Home Country Roads”. Another beautiful Chance lead is “Cover Me Up”, a soul stirring rendition with subtle percussion by Adam Rupp.

    Some Home Free recommendations;
"End of the Road" a great Boys to Men cover and one of their best.
"When a Man Loves a Woman" for a little romance.
"Brothers in Arms" and "How Great Thou Art" for 5 part harmonies where Adam Rupp sings instead of beat boxing.
"Seven Bridges Road" or "Helplessly Hoping" for more incredible harmonies.
"Blue Ain't Your Color" or "Folsom Prison Blues" for a different take on country songs.
"The Butts Remix" and "Country Fried Pop Medley" for a laugh.
"Mayday" but don't listen to this until after you get to know these guys.
"In the Blood", "My Church", "Ring of Fire", "Man of Constant Sorrow" because they are just really great songs.

Ummm -- very surprised but not surprised, if that makes sense. Rob taking lead in HF shows us a lot (where he can go and sound) ie. Colder Weather vs Butts Remix vs End of the Road. Great Reaction! I have never been a fan of opera except maybe some Andrea Bocelli & a few others. But I have always appreciated the talent it takes to sing opera. I was pretty impressed with Rob & Austin's version of Nessun Dorma. I have heard this famous song done by Pavarotti. I think I was more surprised by Rob's range & powerful delivery than even Austin's. Pretty good for a couple of country boys! Nice to see them dressed up in suits & looking classy.

One thing I've wondered about, that I've not heard anyone make a note of (so maybe it's not a thing) but I wonder if a part of the difference in their sounds might come from the fact one (Rob) has a large chest, one (Austin) has a much smaller chest. One would think the sound reverberating out of those two different sized chests would sound different. I know Rob has classical opera training and Austin's training was in musical theater, which would lean towards their strengths.

I have viwed countless reaction to this. A common theme of most was "Rob!" And justifiably so -- very well deseved! But often it seemed to imply that "Austin was OK." Given the difference in their training backgrounds, this was predictable. Nevertheless, I feel that Austin's performance was outstanding as well. If Austin ever reads this, I would say two things. 1) I have a lot of respect for you putting forth your friend in this arrangement, knowing, as you must have, what the "critics" would probably say. 2) Know that you are a great sing er in your own right. I have no doubt that, if you wished to take a side path from your main road, you could develop the ability to place your voice differently, add another kind of vibrato, etc. To both Rob and Austin -- I love you seperately, together, and everyone in Home Froo. Y'all bring important emotional musical stories of all kinds to all audiences. In this way, you are like Eva Cassidy was - no matter in what genre she was singing a particular song, when you listened, you felt that it was her "true" genre. Same for Home Free. What could be better than that?
