  • 247 years ago the US Declaration of Independence was signed. On this day, you may feel that this event is not only from another era, but also from another world. As depicted in John Trumbull's iconic 19th-century paintings, Philadelphia's Founding Fathers worked together to create the framework for the nation's political system. An act of open rebellion by prominent, wealthy, and famous professionals is literally unthinkable to most modern Americans.
The Revolutionary War, which was raging at the time, brought together young and old people who joined forces with the British Redcoats to repel the colonists. The devotion to freedom of these brutal warriors is shown in countless paintings and illustrations known from history to students around the world. They began to desperately defend a country that, by and large, had not yet truly been formed.
But the event is not as distant in time as it often seems.
In fact, some veterans of the American Revolution lived happily through the eighties, nineties, and even into the early next century, living long enough to become part of the era in which photography emerged.
The first daguerreotypes and then glass photography became popular in the 1840s and 1850s. By 1853, 70 years after the great and incredible American victory over the British, more than 3,000,000 daguerreotypes had been produced in the United States.
By the time these photographic tools were developed, the generation of people who lived through the revolution continued to dwindle. Therefore, the desire to document these rapidly disappearing men was driven by establishing a connection with history.
