Yeah Bosque is definitely an amazing place! And I feel you, I can't wait for this crap to be over so we can start traveling again! At least I'm very thankful that I live here in NM and have such amazing places in my backyard. 😁
It’s so great that you are sharing your experiences. I only travel on workshops and have all the issues you talk about, but can never discuss them with anyone. It’s great to know that even for the pro the problems are the same. Thank you.
Your opening segment Brent, contains, at least for me, the greatest sounds that Mother Nature can provide. The early morning calling and rushing of wings of thousands of birds is just something that everyone should experience. Thanks for sharing. A most enjoyable video.🤙🤙
Great video. Love the pictures and sounds. We had to cancel our annual photography trip to Bosque because NM shut its borders to people from CA unless you go through an isolation period after entry to the state. I heard too that they were unable to flood some of the ponds because of drought as well, but looks like you found plenty of geese and cranes to shoot. Thanks for your great video. I'm looking forward to taking my R5 there. Will check out your other videos.
Oh bummer! Yeah, it's been pretty strick for travel here lately. It has been really dry here this year too. The Bosque definitely has a lot less water than previous years, but there's been enough to keep a good amount of birds here for now. I'm going back again tomorrow, so hopefully I'll get some more good light.
Thanks so much. It can get overwhelming with the overall experience of the location then the photography part. Had to cancel trip last year, going in November this year. So much to see, do, learn, experience.
Superb shots and location edited into an inspiring video, thanks for that! I did not know one can have so many birds together, amazing, pity it is so far away from where I live
Many thanks Ben! Bosque is definitely a magical place, especially in the winter! And trust me, I do not take it for granted that I so close, and that I live here in New Mexico (which is the best state in the country by far, lol).
Love that place, i go almost every weekend, but to lazy to get there for sunrise, love the sunset, yesterday (friday) the sunset colors were great, love your video and the information thank you
Brent, great content! I had to subscribe. Been watching all your videos. Your back button (2 button) video saved me a ton of time trying to figure that out myself. Thanks! I have the R5, too. Since the hen my 1D mkII is collecting dust. You mentioned you sold yours along with a D5 MK IV, where is a good place to sell your used gear? Keep the videos coming. Much appreciated!
Hey thanks Mike, I really appreciate that! I don't know, I lucked out and sold all my gear to my best friend, lol. In the past I've sold through ebay, though there's always a slight risk with that, it's always fine okay for me. I've heard good things about KEH and B&H for selling, but have never used either for selling my own stuff.
absolutely stunning footage! This is one of my favorite places as well! Fellow New Mexican here :-) And new subscriber as well, I'm hoping to learn a thing or two from you! Thanks for the advice!
Yeah, I wasn't stoked about leaving at 3 am, but it's always worth it for the Bosque! I'll be doing it again for tomorrow too... so I should probably go to bed soon, lol.
I love ur work, watch u all the time, can u tell me if u can, how long the birds stay at apache. I would love to come down there ,in NM, BUT I LIVE IN WASH. AND AM HANDICAPED WHEN IT COMES TO WALKING A LOT. THANKS UR GREAT U REALLY SEEM HONEST ABOUT EVERYTHING. THANKS DAN
Hey thanks for the kind words Dan, I really appreciate it! The cranes and snow geese will stay there until around mid-feb. Luckily at Bosque you don't need to walk at all and birding from your car while driving the loops is the best way to do it. Also, all of the viewing decks, blinds, and trails are handicap-accessible as well.
A little late to the party but an R5 and R6 owner here who very much appreciates your generosity in education. I am not having great success with the R5 dual back button technique and autofocus for BIF but I am in pac NW with typically low light, short eared owls doing crazy aerial acrobats snd I have the R5 paired with the 500mmi. What would be your starting settings and technique given those conditions? Your “physics is fun” comment relative to panning speed gave me another troubleshooting check. PS What is the doohickie hitched into the back of your Subaru that you use as a table?
It definitely takes some getting used to. I haven't had any issues with either of them for BIF. I usually just hit and hold the star button (where I have my Eye AF On set to) and it always does a great job locking on and tracking the birds in flight. I've been getting a lot of questions about that lately, lol. It's just my bike rack. It's super handy for so much other stuff like that though, so I just always leave it on. You can fold it up too. It's a really high quality one that can hold our 3 mtn bikes.
Really had never seen you before but loved the video and learned a lot from you. Subscribed so I can learn more. I'm fairly new to digital and I shoot Fuji . I prefer wildlife and landscape photography and live in Washington where it abounds with nature. Really enjoyed your video and now must watch another. Thanks, LarryMac
Hey thanks man, I really appreciate it! I love the PNW too! I actually do a nature, wildlife, and astro workshop every year in July up there at ONP. I can't wait to get back up there this next year (hopefully, pandemic pending). Well, if you like wildlife videos, you might check out my wildlife playlist. I have quite a few in there. :)
Brent TY for teaching us. ❤ Any recommendations on how to pull stills from video? New to photography and don't have editing skills or software yet. So much to learn! TY from New England.
If you're going to do the video for the sole purpose of pulling stills, then I'd start with doing the highest resolution you can. then you'll want to do your settings like you would for the actual still, so faster shutter speed and whatever iso you need to get the exposure you want.
Hi Brent. Really enjoy and learn a lot from your videos. I viewed with interest you talking about the R6, RF800mm, Tamron 150-600mm. I am currently looking at the R5 and R6, and probably the RF100-500mm, maybe the RF800mm as well. As I am 77 years old and this will most likely be my last camera, I want to make the right decision, I would not like to buy the R6 and then be sorry I didn't get the R5. I do mainly landscape and wildlife photography. One of the things I like best is photographing elk in the Tetons, YNP and RMNP. Money is not a consideration since I don't want to give it all to my kids. Who knows, I might die tomorrow. I currently shoot with 7D MkII, Tamron 150-600mm G2 and 6DMkII, 24-105mm EF f4 L IS II, 17-40mm EF f4 L. Which one should I get, R5, R6? If I don't want to deal with 45MB files all the time, can't I just shoot at a lower resolution except for when I want a very high res. landscape? Or would that just defeat the purpose of the R5 vs R6? Anyway, any help would be appreciated.
Hey Larry, I'm glad you're liking the videos! If money isn't a big concern, and you're mostly into wildlife and landscape, you should definitely go with the R5. If could only have one camera for everything I do right now, it's be the R5. The only time I grab my R6 first is when I'm doing astro (but the R6 is only very minimally better than the R5 here) or mostly, when my wife grabs the R5 first...because it's "her" camera. :) Interestingly, even though the R5 is 45mp, the file sizes of the uncompressed raws are about the same as the 5D4, which is pretty manageable. You can definitely set it to CRAW if you want smaller file sizes, and there is practically no visible quality loss, even when editing.
i rely on my dad to take me when i go photographing. not because i need to, but because in a lot of cases it makes it easier for parking when shooting in weird places or when explaining to people what we are doing. I just wanted to ask what your tip is for confidence on flying solo? i kind of need to learn that if 22' is going to be different from 2020 and 2021. i am just curious what your major tips are. if you haven't, that would be a great video.
Just found your channel and love your content. Just upgraded to the R6 and spend a week on the Washington coast shooting storm waves below light houses. A couple of questions. I purchased 2 Lexar 128GB 1667x 250MBS for $35 each and one 128gb SanDisk 300MBS for $180. Over the course of a couple of days I filled all three cards. I thought I would see a huge difference in write speeds while shooting 12fps, but not really. Then I downloaded the the photos to my 2TB Samsung SSD and thought I would see a lot of difference .... some but not a lot. Using older macbook pro so it might be the processor limiting issue. Here are my questions - what memory cards do you use? If I don't plan on shooting 8K video is a slower card a better value (five cards for the price of one). Second question - how do you cull your photos after a long shoot. I have 4000 crashing waves at sunset against the lighthouse. Using Adobe Bridge and culling on my SSD them moving to the computer after I have my keepers. What is your workflow? Have you done a video that covers how you cull images? Thanks
For my R6 I use some SanDisk 128Gb 170 mb/s cards and some Kingston 300 mb/s cards. There's not too much noticeable difference in transfer speeds between those two card speeds for me and they both handle shooting in the 4K and 1080 120 fps on the R6 just fine. Yeah, I hate culling too, especially when I have thousands of images to go through. I do the same. I use bridge and star the ones I like (I usually try to do this in the field) that way I can filter them in bridge and start editing right away without searching too hard. Then once I get the best ones edited, I take a look at the next best, and so on. Then if I still have a ton of redundant ones and don't need them for a timelapse or image blending then I might just delete them to save space.
I don't actually have the 150-600. I've only rented it occasionally. Since I now have the RF 800, I would generally prefer the 100-400 )soon to be the 100-500 when I get it) over the 150-600 since it's smaller, lighter, and more versatile for the other types of photography I do in addition to just wildlife. If I was just starting out and was primarily interested in wildlife. then I'd likely get the 150-600.
@@BrentHall Thanks for the comprehensive feedback. You vlogs mean so much to people and help us to make true real world decisions, no matter where you are in the world. Stay Safe.
Thanks Brent, really great vid, see if you can get your Hands on the 100-500mm lens for the R5. I sold my EF 100-400 to get the new lens and it’s as good if not better than the 100-400mm mk2 with the longer reach.
Oh trust me, I'll get it, I just gotta save up a bit more first. I had to prioritize getting the new Les Paul my son wants for Christmas, which sadly, is about as much as the lens, lol, but I'm getting close.
Brent I have been using the same set up as you, R5 and 800 F11 with very good results with birds in flight. Can you give me some insight on what to expect adding the 1-1/4 teleconverter. What percentage of the WMA is closed. Super video.
Thanks James! I haven't used the TCs with the 800 yet, so I don't know exactly what to expect, though I imagine it would go pretty much how you might figure it would go if you put a 1.4x tc on an f11, lol. I wouldn't actually expect any noticeable drop in IQ (maybe very minimally at most). I would expect a slight drop in AF speed and accuracy.
It's a Jetboil. I've had that very same one for about 10 years now and I never leave home without it. It's been in many of my videos over the years, including my recent video about my favorite landscape photography accessories! So, yeah, I'd definitely recommend it!😁
Have you been there in February? What’s it like? Lots of activity? We didn’t get to go out there in December and I’m wondering if it’s still worth a go,
Well I haven't been there this Feb...lol. Seriously though, the cranes should still be there for a little while, so if you're wanting to go for them and the Snowgeese, it should still be worth it, especially for the next couple of weeks, but after that the cranes will start heading out.
Brent what program are you using to preview CR3? Ive updated Adobe and Windows and Digital creator. Looks for something that is perfect to go through alll of these files. Might look at my Lightroom, I mainly use for Time Lapse but not as a loupe.
Well, I did a video about updating Windows to be able to see them in the file explorer, but for sorting and editing I use Bridge. I actually kind of hate Lightroom and the only time I ever use it is for LRTimelapse.
@@BrentHall We are 2 peas in a pod. Thats the only time i use it and its only to slam all my pictures in time lapse to the same grade. Did i see you a cage on one of your R5 or $6? What brand did you go with? I did see your updating windows video. I have always used explorer for me "bridge". Skim through the jpegs then choose a CR3 file. I will check out bridge again.
I got some pretty good pictures using your wildlife settings of sandhills. I have about 20 in my neighborhood that fly down to eat right out of my hand. haha
Very nice. Our refuges are also loaded with birds way out West. I have experienced something odd. I have used my 100-400 at times for flocks of snow geese rafted on the water. There have been times that my shots are distorted or soft with no actual part of the entire shot in focus? It almost seems like there is some kind of invisible thermals or something not allowing accurate focus? I have even wondered if at times heat waves from my truck idling on cool mornings as I shoot out my window of the truck can be a possible culprit? I am stumped why I cant get focus? Not all the time? Ever have that? Thanks for sharing.
If you shoot out of a vehicle window in cold weather the heat escaping out the window can cause atmospheric waves across the lens. I have had that issue with both my 100-400 II and my 600 f/4. Also resting the lens on the window or frame while the car is idling will transmit vibration thru the lens that Stabilization can’t correct. Either or both of these could be your culprit.
@@darrenmctee2255 Thank you. I can eliminate the vibration since I don't lean on the vehicle in any way. One thing I have not thought of is the lens fogging up in some way from cooler air outside. Next time I do this, I will wipe the lens between shots to see if there is anything on the lens. If I dont see anything, good chance the heat waves rising from under the truck between me and the birds or even some kind of waves rising near the birds as the sun hits the water on cool mornings. Weird how I can can sharp photos, then blurry in similar areas :) When I say blurry or soft, there is nothing in the entire shot sharp? So it is not missing focus.
@@angelogarciajr5356 It’s very likely the heat flowing out the window of your truck and in front of the lens. Even a few degree difference of hotter air flowing out into the cold can cause this thermal distortion. It may be coming from under the truck but more likely out the window.
Thanks man! I agree. I would love to get one of the gnarboxes, but not only are they way too expensive for me right now, they are very limited in capacity, and when I'm out there shooting in 8k and 4k and slow motion, I need all the terabytes I can get, lol. If I do ever get one, I'll definitely make a video on it though! I would also be fine with getting a more travel friendly laptop for now too...😅😂😁
Thanks Graham. Sorry, I was on a serious time crunch for that video. All the actual b-roll and wildlife footage was shot on my R5 with the 800mm, a couple shots with the 100-400 mk ii, and all handheld.
I really enjoyed that video Brent, thank you for sharing. I have an R5 which is just the best camera I have ever owned, having been a Canon shooter since 1981. I’m curious to know, if you considered trading your 100 to 400 for the RF 100 to 500 plus the 1.4 extender. I shoot wildlife and sport and I traded in the 100 to 400 and another lens in order to get the RF 100 to 500 first and then add the 1.4extender. I’m still awaiting the 100 to 500 for over 2 months now and I look forward to the day when I can take the R5 and the 100 to 500 out without a tripod and have the freedom of movement of camera and lens for tracking birds in flight that you seem to have with your R5 and 800. Just to be able to move around with a whole lot less weight than the 500 F4 + camera combination I’m currently using will be a joy, I hope. Take care and stay safe. You’re also sending out a great message to your viewers by wearing a mask, even outdoors.
Hey thanks for the kind words man, I really appreciate it! Yeah, I'm saving up for the 100-500, hopefully soon I'll have enough. And yeah, the weight savings with the 800mm is amazing. I watched quite a few people out there being snooty at me with their big white lenses, but then they stop shooting cause they're too heavy, and I'm just shooting away, lol.
Awesome video! Makes me a little sad being that I didn't get to come out from PA this year but nice to see the place on video. One of my favorite places in the world. Great point about having in the field back up. With my 7d I would just bring a bunch of cards and unload them when I got back to where I was staying. With the cost of CFexpress cards I'll stick with the one I have and adopt a transfer solution in the field. BTW, I was just informed that I won 1st place in the People category for last years festival photo contest. Check it out if you have a chance.
Oh man, I'm sorry to hear that! I know how you feel though. This was the first year I've had to cancel my Bosque workshops completely, and not only are they fun and I love doing them, but they are a good chunk of my quarterly income.
There were people around where I was photographing, and it's the rule at BdA. Also, I find nothing wrong with being over-protective, especially in this case. Wearing a mask does not bother me in the least bit.
My wife and I LOVE Bosque Del Apache. So many great memories there. We hope to get back as soon as we can after the freaking COVID virus passes.

Bosque del Apache is such a blast. The 800mm sure helps to reach that bald eagle on the dead tree for sure!

@@BrentHall Thanks for the quick answers!
Hey Brent - great vlog. Why did you decide to use the Canon 100-400 and not the 150-600? Is the 100-400 that mush sharper? cheers
Stay Safe.
Would love to visit there, but it's a long way from N> Carolina.
Brent, What’s that portable camp stove you are using, and would you recommend it? Thanks, Craig
It's a Jetboil. I've had that very same one for about 10 years now and I never leave home without it. It's been in many of my videos over the years, including my recent video about my favorite landscape photography accessories! So, yeah, I'd definitely recommend it!😁
@@BrentHall Super, thanks for the details! Craig
What country/state ? Not everyone knows this place. Thank you, great work.
I did say in the video. It's in New Mexico.
Bruh, you lens is impressive!
Why thank you! :P
That shutter in the beginning 😳.. the sounds of a hard drive losing some serious space and a lot of searching through shots lol
yeah, it was definitely a lot of images to sift through....
I have about 20 in my neighborhood that fly down to eat right out of my hand. haha
It's a small rig L bracket. I talked about it in my recent landscape photography accessories video.
Yeah that's a little weird, though it does sound like it could be a bit of atmospheric and/or thermal distortion.
Have you compared the 100-400 with a 2x extender against the 800 f/11? Just wondering how they compare.
Not directly, but I've used both, and if I need to be at 800, I'll take the native rf 800mm every time.
Nice video. It would be cooler to use one of the backup drives that don't require a computer. They're quite expensive though.
Thanks man! I would also be fine with getting a more travel friendly laptop for now too...😅😂😁
I am liking your content. One ask: label your footage in a corner, so we know what you are using as you switch between bodies & lenses.
Thanks Dave! Yeah, it's definitely a bummer that you couldn't make it out this year. Hopefully next year. And congrats on the win!
Camera gears.?
Speaking of Sandhill you just posted a video with them. There asses out there that shoot these birds.
You must have bunch of assistants to do the initial edits.
I wish, lol! It's just me.
19:23 Awww
Gtech needs to send me one lol I’ll test it and run it over with my F-150 😆
that'd be interesting for sure, lol.
Was planning a Christmas/New Years trip but due to the hysteria am forced to cancel, pissed off here.
Oh man, I'm sorry to hear that! I know how you feel though. This was the first year I've had to cancel my Bosque workshops completely, and not only are they fun and I love doing them, but they are a good chunk of my quarterly income.
Why are you wearing a mask out of doors in a wide open place with no people around, fresh air, etc.? That's so weird!
There were people around where I was photographing, and it's the rule at BdA. Also, I find nothing wrong with being over-protective, especially in this case. Wearing a mask does not bother me in the least bit.
