Theft is theft. There are no levels of morality. And the examples here are a small store vs a big box store. Both are equally as reprehensible. We cannot apply different levels of shame on criminal activity based on who gets victimized. That does nothing but divide us and pit us against each other. This is a shame. Being a cyclist my entire life I know bike shops actually become more than a place to buy stuff, they are often a gathering place where you are known by your first name and you know the owner by the same.
All that said its hard for me to understand that a 10 K theft could put them out of business? One bike now days could cost that now days, but according to this they took only which was in the display case and items on the wall. I have to think the owner has insurance and certainly a quick call to vendors could have products back in the store and ready to open in a week. My guess is they would / could set up some extended billing credit for when the insurance pays like 90 or 120 days.
Now possibly the report isn't entirely correct and more was taken like tools and equipment from the shop or? Wish them and the community the best getting back on their feet.

A news editor writing a headline should know he wasn’t robbed. It was a burglary. The headline stated a falsehood as fact. It was fine to quote the owner if quoted accurately, but don’t suck viewers in with over-dramatized headlines. This poor businessman had a bad enough blow without having suffered violence or threats of violence, and the public needs to learn that the penalties are completely different to the burglar than the robber. I hope they not only catch the burglar and get the stuff back, but offer to let the burglar(s) work off his restitution in lieu of the maximum sentence. We need to encourage restitution, responsibility, and non-violence…healing, maturing.

What are you going to do, lock em up and throw away the key? Moses told people thou shall not steal 6,000 years ago. And for 6,000 years people have been stealing. California has oneof the highest incarceration rates in the world. 14.5 billion a year just to run the prison for 125,000 inmates. You ain't going to jail your way out of a 6,000 year old problem. Lay off the FOX NEWS.

AS long as you and others keep saying this, we know it will never change.
America has pursued Reaganomic, private-enterprise economics for over 50 years. We've all seen the graphs of falling income for working class Americans.
And now the graphs for middle class are looking pretty damn shabby.
"You got the WRONG degree!" is the victim-blaming response to unemployed, smart, college graduates.
Moving the goalposts is so convenient!
Income and wealth concentration have consequences.
When working doesn't pay the bills, what do you expect people to do?
But trust me, I get it. You're one of those who "made it," so you'll NEVER part with YOUR lifestyle. "You earned it" after all!
      Here's what is needed:
      1) The poor need... MONEY.
      2) The homeless need... HOMES.
Crazy thinking, I know. But since no one will accept this fact, expect the downward spiral to continue.
      We're so screwed.
