Has to be my favourite episode of Inside No.9 to date. Everyone bangs on about the '12 days of Christine' episode, which is fantastic also, but this one actually made me cry. Christine didn't. I don't know why it made me cry, and I don't want to write any spoilers as to why it made me cry.. it just did. Love anything that Pemberton and Shearsmith do.

    Perhaps this is very “British”!
But this American guy was crying his eyes out at the end of this episode.
    Steve and Reece...master performances.
The little ditty of a song in the episode was so bittersweet and beautiful.
If you didn’t like this episode, it’s quite possible that you don’t have a heart.

Watched this one three times, each time I bawled, something about it, really felt like it dredged up true feelings of grief but it was cathartic and joyous, Pemberton and Shearsmith are at the very top of their game.

This episode was perhaps the best 1/2 hr of television I've EVER seen and I'm not overstating that. I have no words to describe the brilliance of the actors and creators of this show...remarkable.

Inside Number 9 is always good, often excellent. This particular episode was sublime. I grew up as Alternative Comedy was emerging. That spawned some great stuff but it was so not cool to like old style variety acts; in fact all old stuff was lumped in with the truly nasty racist material the likes of Bernard Manning were putting out. This powerful and deeply moving few minutes of TV addresses that while telling its story. It is beautifully crafted, respectful and utterly engaging . It is heart wrenching and hilarious and the brilliant Pemberton and Shearsmith have surpassed themselves. Gold.

Great review, and some nice insight into the work behind the old British style variety act - I remember seeing a lot of comedians like this on TV, or on family trips to Blackpool when I was a child. While a lot of the humour felt outdated even at the time, there's no denying the huge amount of skill it takes to perfect an act like that. The dynamic between the characters was brilliant (I can totally believe the tension and tragedy that drove them apart) and the ending... well, the ending really got me. I think I'll rewatch this episode, right after I check out some of your other reviews of this series!

Oi, I'm just after looking for a review of this episode on your channel but because you don't have one had to go elsewhere ;) you should do some of the classics and why not throw in some Evil Dead while you're at it :p
Anyway love the channel mate 🙌👍

Excellent review. Watched that episode three times now and it brings a little tear to my eye every time. I have been a massive fan of their work for 20 years and it just seems to get better and better. This was quite possibly my favourite Inside No.9 episode to date. Brought a lot of nostalgic feelings from growing up watching variety entertainment in my youth. You're right it is an excellent piece of British TV writing. Looking forward to your next review.

james marno everyone I know have completely different favourites. I didn’t rate this episode. My favourite is Nannas party and seance. La cruchet is also brilliant.

I spotted the twist...but as someone who is 50 and has seen some good friends come and go...it was bitter sweet and had me choked up.

A marvellous episode. Pemberton seemed to be oddly channelling Gervais's Andy Millman to start with though with the overstated mugging to the camera. It was the beer bottles trick that was the turning moment - that's when you really see the characters' skill as an act. The implication that Pemberton's character really did like a drink being an added, although actually not essential, layer. The comedy acts portrayed in this are a core part of a certain aspect of Britishness/Englishness- self deprecating, seeking love from the audience during the act under the guise of being downtrodden by the comedy partner, pretending to be more haphazard than really are or deliberately being overtly officious. Maybe it's partly because seaside towns form a larger proportion of the country than they do in some other European countries. It's easy to overlook Shearsmith's acting though - he's more boyish physically, more suited for either modern parts or ones where he's almost unrecognisable e.g. Maureen. He plays off other characters very well. He was marvellous in Once Removed and Diddle Diddle Dumpling.

Nice review of what is becoming the best show on TV, Series 4 has been top notch. Bernie Clifton's is their best one I think, kind of a reflection on friendship in a wider sense, especially the friends we moved on from, etc.
Looking forward (is that that backward) to your review of episode three, if you didn't know Reece Shearsmith has a chronological edition of it available to download on his Twitter feed.

ChubbyChecker182 I think the series is so good because it doesn't follow a formula and the writing is always on point. Whether you enjoy the particular weeks subject or not.

Unless you were a genius like Tommy Cooper who couldn't do his set without a bottle Jonnie Walker,,, ( Reece"s charecter is very bitter you omitted because Steve's charecter had a bad drink issue...) BCDR is full of The theme they sing *Tears N Laughter * very moving, as you said, it's Pemberton /Shearmsith on fire, amazing show
