      Yes progressing nicely! Its the things like headlining and wheel refurbs that make sense to get done but are starting to slow things down now 😬.

    It’s looking good. I was going to buy that same car a couple of years ago but the only reason I didn’t was the aircon wasn’t working. It’s going to look great when finished, well done Craig

    • @CraigOnCars
      @CraigOnCars  3 года назад

      Thank you. Thats right, it wasnt working when i bought it - quite a common thing on the E31, though can be a big bill to fix depending on whats wrong. I havnt got as far as identifying the issue yet 😬. I had it pressure tested and regassed year before last and it was amazing for 2 weeks then fizzled out again. Did you find another E31?

    • @rayclarke8541
      @rayclarke8541 3 года назад +1

      @@CraigOnCars Yes thanks, last year as it’s very similar to yours but this has 54k on the clock as the last owner stored it for 19 years but also the air con doesn’t work. If you lost pressure in yours it could be the condenser as they get a lot of crap from the road but not had mine checked yet.

    Hi Craig, understand 100% where you are coming from with the budget considerations. I am doing all the work myself and it is still expensive. Strange how these cars vary. Mine is a 1998, rear bumper carrier was way worse than yours. It was solid rust, no paint left at all, yet no seized bolts. You've done really well with the blasting and powder coating, wish I lived in Wales! I'm assuming you know all about realoem for all your parts queries? Keep at it mate, it will be worth it. I have totally stalled with mine, hope I get some second wind soon and can get it finished. Still a lot to do. Have you had a real good look at the bonnet front lip? Mine was very nasty. That flat rubber seal causes and hides a ton of rot.

    • @CraigOnCars
      @CraigOnCars  3 года назад

      Thanks for the heads up about the bonnet front lip, i’ll be sure to take a closer look next time i’m there! Deciding what to do about the front end of the car is a big dilemna for me. On the one hand it makes sense to carry on what we started, remove the front wings and bumper, take a good look and address what we find, before the rear and sides of the car are painted. On the other hand, im already way over original budget and the front end is looking really strong other than a few stone chips on the bonnet and flaking laquer on the bumper, and i suspect taking the front bumper off will be a real nightmare with all the associated electrics in that area along with safe removal of the FTPs. I wonder if it may be more pragmatic to leave the front end well alone and if in a few years it starts showing signs of rust then start a new project. Yes i do refer to realoem from time to time but my local bmw dealer is pretty helpful and most parts needed so far have been available other than headliner and the bolts for the rear carrier which we found a workaround solution for anyway. Hope you do manage to get your project finished, with any luck watching mine inspires you to keep going! It is strange isnt it how each car differs in progress of the rust. Its certainly shown me how even the best looking cars on the outside can be hiding so many surprises under the skin. Finding the nasty rust behind my door seal was a real low point

    Great to see the progress on this 👍🏻 quick question have u checked your boot where the screen wash tank is as well as the engine bay at the top of the wheel arches (where the brake lines are) Reason I ask is that these were areas I initially missed out and we didn’t notice when I got my car first sorted. I’m also getting my rear impact plate and radiator plate done but we are just chemically treating it

    • @CraigOnCars
      @CraigOnCars  3 года назад +1

      The boot floor around the screen wash tank needs some attention and will definately be done no doubt in the next week or so. The front end of the car i’m in two minds about. Part of me wants to and knows it makes sense to get the front wings off and front bumper to assess whats behind whilst all this other work is being done. However another part of me (especially my wallet!) is thinking it may be better to keep the front end as a separate project to come back to one day perhaps when the engine needs an overhaul and comes out as then there will be much better access. By all accounts getting the front bumper off is a real headache (the rear was bad enough) and from what we can see the front does look strong and i know from a few other people who have done similar projects they found very little rust on the front end. Im also worried about breaking the FTPs and unsettling electrics by removing the front end. The rear impact bar came out very well from sand blasting and powder coating - some minor pitting still visible under the paint finish in one area, but looks great and will do the job nicely. BMW wanted £420 plus VAT for a new one!
