Just another day on UK roads!
Superb machine. The colour, the wheels, the interior, the shape. True car. BMW
Thanks!
Great and informative video! Was very useful when buying my own. What I've noticed in a tropical region is the interior plastic parts start to disintegrate on pieces like the automatic gear selector plate and the air con vent, so the plastics need a thorough looking at when in a humid country.
Thanks! And good information on the plastics, don't have that problem here, although a damp country - no heat to go with it!
This is exactly what I wanted to see right now! Thank you again for your love for these cars and taking the time for all of us to see! I can't wait til I own one!
Glad you enjoyed it Zona, and don't hold on too long!
@@TimmsBMWRepairsandInformation Thank you for replying! I didnt! Just bought a 1993 850ci! I am so excited to be apart of the club now!
Just came across you channel - you have a great delivery- explain things in a no nonsense way. You would make a great T.V presenter. I have never owned a BMW or indeed driven one. However had a run out in my brother - in - laws 650i last week and have to say was very impressed by it. Hard top version of yours. Has me now hankering after one. 👍
Thanks Graham!
im looking to purchase one of these, thank you very much for the great information :)
Well I'm off to view some E31s today and feel so much better prepared having watched so many of your videos over the last get day. I can't thank you enough for the information you impart and reassurance. Thank you again Lloyd
Have fun!
I have bought a 1997 840 and it's being delivered on Saturday
Thank you, Timm, for this video! I love these cars. I'm looking forward to owning one soon.
Don't wait too long my friend, and thanks!
That is a stunning colour. Thanks for the video as it has convinced me that it isn’t a stupid idea to look for a genuine one.
Thanks Tony!
That colour looks great on this car! The e31 is such a beauty, with the windows down you can really appreciate the lines.
Couldn't agree more!
Great video Timm - plenty of good advice as usual - thanks.
Good to hear from you Kev!
Your right there the e31 wasn’t designed as a daily driver it was designed to make you look cool as f**k driving it 😊
Perfectly true!
This is very helpful! Very nice shade of purple on yours. Thank you for your help.
My Pleasure!
Tim, everyone loves you on the Facebook E31owners club!
That's nice to know Lee!
Thanks Timm, going through this video makes me realise mine definitely isn't a Lemon, i just need to use it more!
Good man Robert - too many are hiding away in garages going mouldy!
Thank you got my e31 in march 2021 loving it to bits... Needed to do a lot of work and i have still a lot of thing to sort out.
Great to hear!
I am watching the video , really perfect.
Thanks.
You are most welcome Ali!
Hi Timm this is Alvin your number one fan. Thank you for this detailed video. Could you do a video like this on your 6 series. Stay safe.
My friend Alvin! Good to hear from you!
Great advice and expert tips on the BMW super car.
Glad it was helpful Alejandro!
Great video fella well done
Thanks 👍
A very nice E31 indeed (I have a non-LCI so to speak - which has the fading seat belt guides among others). I thought about being the LCI and CSi long ago when they were rather affordable. I though that two 8-series would be too much. Too bad I didn't.
Thank You Timm!!! Good Video 😊
Thank you too Nick!
Hi, I really like your channel. I learned quite a bit just by watching it the last few days. I have owned my 2005 BMW 645 for probably eight years now. I probably put about 5K miles on it since I owned it. I will admit, I didn't change the oil every six months like you suggested and the previous owner let it sit a lot as well. I have not really drove it in about two years. The check engine light is on and on the screen it is saying increased emission and dynamic drive error. The car did not get through emission testing and the air conditioner is not blowing cold. I will look at the radiator this weekend to see if it is clogged up with leaves. I changed the IVM module last weekend as it would cut and not start, but that seem to fix the issue. The codes I get are 2E69 (Knocking Sensor) and 2EF4 (Engine Characteristic MAP Thermostat Mechanics). I did have shop change the thermostat about two years ago. The antifreeze level was low and I put in the Preston antifreeze designed for BMW specifically. However, since listening to your video, I will flush that out and put BMW antifreeze. I wanted to know if I should get rid of this car. The RPM is about 500 as opposed to 700. Did you say the 645 was a bad design?
No, very good design, very poor service routine! Don't give up quite yet!
THANK YOU VERY MUCH,YOU HELP TO ME LONG TIME AGO WITH YOUR INTERNET PAGE,HOW TO FIX AND SOLVED PROBLEMS! SERBIA BELGRADE🇷🇸
My pleasure Milano!
Excellent video as usual Tim. Would love to see a video on the lubrication of the window wiper system you mention since I have that issue on my E39. Thanks.
Great suggestion!
I wish you could come with me when I buy my E31 lol. so much to remember
I only go to work at the moment!
For being outdoor cars they look great. I have a 3 car garage here in sunny Arizona. I believe my car’s interior would have fallen apart a decade ago in that sun, but happily zero rust.
Thanks, just had the rust done on the E31, there's always a price to pay in the UK!
Hi Timm! Thanks for your investment of time making this video. Your passion for the E31 easily shines through as well as your knowledge on the subject. I'd like to ask a question in regards to the earlier E31 models (prior to 96'). Did they (the E31's) suffer from the dreaded Nikasil problem that their 5 series and 7 series brothers did?
Nothing to worry about these days: www.meeknet.co.uk/E32/Nikasil.htm
Great content as always! This is still such dream car. I already have my E38 for a couple years now but as the prices going, i just don't see when will i be able to afford one of these, and of course the more i wait, the more expensive they will be. And now i also can be worried about parts availability, which was never a problem for the E38.
Thanks Kristóf! No problem getting parts in the UK - quite a few specialist breakers here.
Interesting, i thought nobody is parting 8ers.
I love the color combination on this e31. I own an e39 with the same engine, but hopefully ill pick up an 850ci soon!
Good man - that's the plan!
Extremely impressive CI, that's very cool you have a late one with all the CSI stuff.
I have, and very lucky to have found it!
@@TimmsBMWRepairsandInformation Does this have the rear wheel steering?
Great video and guidance Timm did I spot you driving around the peanut round about in Bordon?
I live off Hogmoor Road!
I have made notes fro. The video and start viewing E31 this coming weekend. I did own one for nearly 8 years and I am features in the BMW car mag 20th anniversary of the E31.
Anyway thanks for your advice as always.
Yes, not far from you, and we used to live in Broomfield Road after we lived at Redhouse for a while, and thanks!
Well once I get one in yhw coming weeks I hope to see you out and about. My empty double garage is desperately wait for its arrival!
Great vid 👌
Glad you enjoyed it James!
Great video Tim. I'm looking to get one of these beautiful cars and something I've noticed on quite a few is that when the bonnet is closed, the headlight 'squares' (For want of a better term) are often not flush with the bonnet openings. I'm sure this is quite a difficult thing to get perfect given the lights are on a pivoting platform but Is there any adjustment for this to get them flush all the way around?
Just bought a 2004 645Ci convertible Only thing is an oil leak on the vacuum seal and the Nav is not working but I love the look . Thanks for your vids. Hi from Canada.
Hi from the UK!
I miss seeing these on the road here in NY. I regret buying my 97 svt cobra over one of these. I was looking for an m3 but didn't realize at the time just how cool the 850 end 840 was. Gonna be searching again
Yes, I'm going to do my best to keep this one going!
@TimmsBMWRepairsandInformation hoping for the best! I'm big into customizing, so maybe I can find one in decent enough shape to make my own. But if I find a clean one I might just maintain it
Excellent video and very useful information! What do you think about the 850ci with the M73B54? Do you have any experience with that engine?
Thanks Georgi! In my opinion the late 850ci is the top of the list, even above the csi
Thanks for the amazing video Timm! Is it still possible to order spare parts for an 850 @ BMW? Like broken seats, transmission etc..
Thanks Danny! Many parts are available including the full drivetrain, it's just strange parts that have disappeared.
I own a 92 E31 850 V12. A real different beast to the 840. Yes they cost a lot to maintain and if keep totally well maintained a great motor BUT the engine is a bear to work on if and I sure know that. I know as my beautiful Alpine White on 120k miles has a tapping noise again so here we go for at least another $3k........this video is good but a 35k feet shallow ish status
👍 amazing video, and blue BMW coolant is the best , which oil are you using?
Thanks, I always use Castrol Edge Fully Synthetic
I got to say Timm that is a very nice colour. You must like it too as the 6 series is almost the same.
Thanks! Yes, the 650i is pretty close, close enough!
Hey man
Are you available to do some work on an E39? Looking for a vanos and chain guides replacement.
Thanks 👍🏻
Thanks for all the E-31 information!! Do you know where I can find a video on removing the Multi information display? I need to send it off for pixel repair. Thanks for your help.
Hello Chuck, the instructions are on
meeknet.co.uk/e31/E31_Radio_And_MID_Removal.htm
My 50 cents on rust after changing the windshield glass. I would suggest cavity wax before fitting the rubber seal.
Really? Every account ive ever heard about these things is that the V12 is by far the more robust motor re; reliability and maintenance. And, no, not specifically by my mechanic 😂 God I do love these.. Id be in heaven to find a minty V12 with a manual.. so dope, these.
Hello Scott, the V12 engine is extremely robust, the problem is the aging throttle bodies, MAF's and electronics!
@@TimmsBMWRepairsandInformation Yeah I always did think that was one hell of a wacky idea to effectively run 2 totally separate engine electrical systems (including battery? I guess developing engine electronics is more expensive than I thought, haha. Seems though the modern day solution is... to still run the same setup? Absolute beaute, my friend. enjoy it in good health :)
As an E31 font of knowledge, can you please advise. My OBC has the three led’s of the timer, limit and code buttons flashing constantly draining the battery. Borrowing another unit the issue disappears. Do you recognise the issue or can suggest a company that can diagnose and repair? It had a new ribbon 2 years ago and apart from the fault is near perfect condition. Thanks
Have a look on Bimmerforums.Com on the E31 pages - there are vendors that can repair them mentioned there.
Excellent Timm, as ever. Useful as a mid life checkup too if you'er not thinking of selling! 😀
So true!
Tim what do you think of an overall quite nice 840ci, but with significant rusting around three of the inner edges of the wheel arches, I guess due to years on salted British roads. The car mechanics/paintwork is quite good everywhere else/inside and out. Can much be done with wheel arches these days?, mostly where they form the edge lip, there is not too much bubbling visible side on. I don't know much about body repairs, but maybe magic can be done by a good body shop, or would you avoid?
The arches can be fixed for around 2k successfully, I had mine done a few years ago at the local bodyshop
@@TimmsBMWRepairsandInformation Now that's very good to hear, these cars are well worth repairing/looking after, so few around these days, and they are a joy to drive. Thanks
Did they make the 840 CSi for America too?.. the individual one's or were those just for the UK?
No, it is an 840ci with the factory csi kit supplied free of charge in 1998 and 1999 in the UK - the USA stopped selling in 1997 so missed the give-away!
Looking at an E31 myself Timm, but the one I've seen appears to have some sort of oil leak visible from below, but looking from the top there aren't any clear evidence of where this may be coming from. Are there common spots where this engine is prone to leak oil? It's a 2006 model 840ci with the M62 engine.
They leak from many places - usually the valve covers - and you will not see that as it goes down the sides of the engine (sometimes onto the exhaust manifold) and appears underneath. I've had 7 BMW V8's - and they have leaked to some extent!
Not that it matters, but t wasn't a 2006 model. 99/2000 or thereabouts saw the end of E31 production
I have a 91 bmw 850i..my driver's side front and rear window wont roll up or down, passenger front and rear is ok..what could that be if you were to guess?
Start with the front regulator, they give up quite often, if that is OK then suspect the General Module
Why don’t Bmw make the parts anymore? They should be proud of this car
They make a lot Lee, just not all of them!
Timm I can’t believe a man of your knowledge and expertise has got squeaky headlights !! What’s going on ?
After I completed this video I lubricated the lights, fixed the boot-hinge wiring loom and sorted the indicators!
It is a wonderful car . I have 1991 model . How I can get the spare parts in Lebanese Market.
Everything comes from Latvia these days!
After you start the car the camera shakes and shakes and shakes. Do you have misfire?
Nah!
I have a 2001 E38 and the timing chain broke. 😞
So now i have to replace the engine.
You've got to try pretty hard to break an M62 chain Chris!
NEW SUB …. TIMM IM LOOKING AT A USED 645ci with 170,000 miles, what should I look for ? I’m going tomorrow evening to test drive … or anyone on here any tips help!!!!!!!
Here's what you need: ruclips.net/video/Aw9w7Jrgm9c/видео.html
@@TimmsBMWRepairsandInformation what were you saving about the vamos? We’re you saying if the bolt on the front was brown or black not to buy? Or the actual silver and gray gear?
What paint is that on the E31 ?
Its Mora Metallic, an individual paint available on a few models, E31, E38, E39 and the Z3
Lovely car! What wheels are they?
Thanks Ryan, they are 18" Rondell 58's - there are SO many E31's in the UK with these alloys, but they are not available anymore.
Random question is this worth it to be used as a first car?
Not really, they do tend to go wrong often. Any of the old BMW's are the same from the E31 to the E39 - that's why I also have a more modern car alongside the E31! There again, the E31 hasn't gone wrong for a few years now.
@@TimmsBMWRepairsandInformation Thank you!!!
Identical to my old car, bought £12k 80kmiles sold £8k 120k miles 4 years later , no problems , changed auto box fluid sooy I sold it -((
You just can't sell these and hope to get another one these days Jonathan!
I'd buy one just to park it in my driveway then, just look at it!
Quite a few do!
Wish you own a BMW E30
I do like the 3-Series I must admit, the engines are just a little, how can I put this, er, small!
@@TimmsBMWRepairsandInformation buy one and drop the v8 in it
But first take us on a journey of getting the m20 running tip top first
If it's an early V12... there is no good one...they were broken from the factory 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Yes, they caused huge problems when they were first released - but they got better - especially the M73 version!
Привет какого она года выпуска????
год 1999
