Casino Night Zone (Sonic 2) sight-read by Tom Brier

- I created a score that uses a march left hand like typical ragtime (but also has the original jazz walking bass line written on a third staff). You can download the sheet music that he is reading and improvising from here: www.keeper1st.c...
This was recorded toward the end of the May 2013 meeting of the Mother Lode Ragtime Society, at the Sutter Creek Ice Cream Emporium, 51 Main Street, Sutter Creek, California.

He's never heard most of these tunes before. I don't really show him these things because they're from games; I do it because they're new ragtime pieces for him to play.
Must have been a high pitched broom!
Thank you for posting these. I play piano and I love many original NES games so this is very satisfying to me! I absolutely love it.
If Sega ever makes a comeback they need this guy to record the soundtracks for Sonic
@@mrwonderful2142 Sadly he was in a traumatic car wreck years ago and lost his ability. What a world, cherish all you can in life, such a short time
@@mrwonderful2142 Too late.
This guy is a freaking legend
He truly is. Sad that he can't play anymore.
@@WinterPyro really?? Why?? Very sad imagine this
@@papelnaarea he got hit a few years ago and took some mental trauma
Elmer Gueiros to add more context he was hit by a car
@@papelnaarea He has brain damage and can't walk, speak, or use his hands very well.
if someone says they feel like they're in a saloon one more time....
I feel like a saloon is in me.

I feel like I’m in an old bar ;)
I feel like a whole saloon
I saloon like I'm in an old feel.
They feel like they're in a saloon one more time....
I've only recently discovered tom and his amazing ability, and consequently, his unfortunate accident. I must say, it's an utter tragedy of the highest regard that the world has been robbed of this gift of a man. I truly hope he recovers fully and we are all fortunate enough to hear him play again.
I live to hear him play again...
Senseless tragedy that has had me question lots of things. He ability was absolutely remarkable and thankfully we have these videos that document his genius. I would love to speak to the person that crashed into Tom and ruined his life.
I like how he always improvises about ten different endings.
You did an amazing job scoring this song. Yes Tom Brier played brilliantly, but I don't think enough credit is given to you for writing this. This is certainly not written this well in the video game. Sure, catchy tune, and whoever it is that wrote the original score deserves credit as well, but to put so much embellishment and to re-score it like this takes a lot of talent, and a great ear for music, and you've definitely shown time and again you have that.
He can’t even play piano and he writes music, how incredible is that?
RicoLen1 agreed!
Truly amazing, both of them. This song sounds really hard to play or write.
He has the origional score infront only and the rest is his own touch he puts. Watch his other videos. This guy is awsome
@@LuisGomez-qo5dq it's actually not the original score in this video! Several of them are arrangements, including this one that was made by the uploader (don't know his name, sorry).
Oh, I think what you're hearing as "static" is the store employee sweeping the floor. He was getting ready to close the shop for the night.
GOTTA RAG FAST!
The

Ten minutes to take all the rings you can... The only level where I almost lost a life for Time-Over.
Long as you get 100 in the process you can go forever!
This was the video that got me into Tom Brier. I binged his videos; incredible sight reading and playing skills. Finding out about the car accident was devastating.
He takes these great old compositions from my childhood that are so deeply engrained in my memories, and adds new life to them by making his own lead lines during go backs... Thank you Tom Brier! Your a musical hero! Someone get this guy to compose for an indie platformer!!!
We'd love for him to compose anything since the traumatic brain injury suffered two years ago, but he wants to do it himself and not try to give dictation. He has lost most of his ability to speak over the past year, so even if he wanted to, it may no longer be possible for him to give dictation, though he has indicated he has music in his head that he wants to write down. However, he's still unable to use a pen or a computer mouse, though he has regained good movement in his left hand and fingers (the fact that he was right-handed adds to the difficulty). Maybe if someone can fashion an advanced enough magnetic board for music notation, that and a series of pictures could be used for someone to write it down all together, if he'd be willing to do at least that.
@@Keeper1st I mentioned this a few years ago, but what about using eye-tracking software? There exists free software like OptiKey to let you control your mouse and keyboard with your eyes. Maybe his condition is beyond that, or maybe he's uninterested. Has this been presented to him? Sorry if I'm out of the loop, I haven't been in the Discord since 2019. ruclips.net/video/HLkyORh7vKk/видео.html
I don't know why, but much as I love Tom's amazing playing, it's always his cheesy little laugh at the end of these that gets me XD He clearly enjoys doing what he does and does it well, and that's something to admired!
as someone who has performed this in the past, that just puts a smile on your face. 6 versions just pulled out of his ass. Absolutly no Fs given.
Best cover I've ever herd! Holy cow I'm still in awe
Mayer Yedid I sincerely hope that you misspelled heard on purpose, because that pun just made my night
Max Behymer Ashamed to admit it but I think that time was a misspell. Ah well, glad it gave someone a good laugh XD
It's a pun relating to how this songs sounds like the old west.
He's bald because the audio-visual processing in real time creates so much heat that it killed the follicles on his head lol.
I will hear this for the rest of my life if i can. Tom Brier, for me a legend. This guy is still alive and thats the one thing that is important. Like the guy in top comments "This guy is a freaking legend". Pure love to everyone who was involved in his recovery. pure love to everyone who had to share in this fate. Pure love for Tom Brier.
Shoutout to you Keeper1st for the scores! By carrying the essense of the tunes so well on there, Tom is able to render his genius in a form and feel true to the original.
I am hopeful for his recovery. Quoting Mr. Edwards (2023 Lifetime Achievement Award) "He is a force of nature".
You can tell that guy's a genius simply from the beard, baldness and shorts.
Tim Crinion the less u focus and care about ur physical appearence and more u focus about ur craft and knowledge of things... well, this happens. an extreme example, but an example nonetheless
I’m a genius too I’m bald with a beard and I’m wearing shorts right now.
FUCK YOU
Steve Wozniak's got nothing on this beard-to-talent ratio!
@@JokinJoe me too lol. Hahaha.
Man, Tom Brier brightens my day. Thank you, brother.
I love Tom's style, incorporating improv into ragtime always makes think of stride piano. Early jazz music and ragtime are so fun.
1:45 is one of my favourite bits, the way the chords go just sounds so nice in that little bit
Yet another classic Brierization!!!!! Keep em comin' if and when you can!!!
lol...a sight-read absolutely smashing the original composer of theme to oblivion
I’m here for the first time. I don’t know anything about this man or his story. I’ve stumbled down the rabbit hole from Smooth McGroove to this in about 10 minutes and am floored ❤
Me too, I watched this with my 3 year old and I’m sure she has no idea why I’m so stunned!
Amazing. I've played this video probably a hundred times...I can't wait to play a hundred more.
Tom has played "When I'm 64" plenty of times, along with Julia or the band, but you'll never see a video from me of that (though I did record one). RUclips wouldn't like me very much...!
Standing ovation from me on all that flourish and improv. My favorite song from a sonic game and he crushed it into paste and sculpted something beautiful from it.
Damn I get goosebumps at the intro
I thought I was the only one who got goosebumps from good music, thank you.
Tom is a super hero and his power is music
I don't recall there ever being a raccoon on the puppet rack, actually.
Oh yeah, I did see a raccoon puppet there on Friday during the festival this year (but it had been sold by Saturday evening apparently), so they do have raccoons occasionally.
This is the definition of "Brierizing"
Made me feel like I stepped into an old timie bar and ordered a root beer... so much life he brings to the piano.
I took up piano after I retired a year ago. I have always been intrigued by ragtime. When I discovered Tom I was just blown away. I have not found anyone that matches him. He is an inspiration but I find ragtime very difficult to play. He has that natural born talent and pushed it to the max.
There are a few good players out there who are quite young and just might be able to begin to pick up Tom's torch and carry on. I won't name any, but hunt around and you will find them. It's certainly something that requires a special ability. Tom was helped by learning to play and sight-read at an early age and to discover the existence of ragtime player-piano rolls, of which he has an immense collection.
Tom recorded a few player-piano rolls, but in my estimation they are not as good as his spontaneous creations such as you see here. They also don't have the amused chuckle at the end of the piece.
Many pianists can sight read, and many can improvise. Few can do both, spectacularly, at once.
This is something that you’d play in an old western saloon when someone dives over the poker table to choke out an opponent, as the entire building descends into a massive brawl
Only in movies.
Stylistically the music is from a much later period (early silent films often were Westerns, so the music of the film era continues to be used in Westerns even though it’s anachronistic), and the card game would have been Faro!
@@Keeper1st
I know no one ever acknowledges or replies to your corrections, so I guess I have to: Even if a bit pedantic, I respect your dedication to historical accuracy and trying to dispel a misconception. I certainly learned something I might not have on my own when I saw one of these replies to another person from you years ago.
@@Persun_McPersonson Though I think this is the only one in which I point out that poker was not the card game of choice in the old West!
These make me cry i get so happy
that cat on the right side looks like it wants to eat my soul...
Literally astonishing talent!
Must be on your end. There's no static in the video. I specifically convert the audio in these videos to a format that RUclips doesn't turn into static (the AC3 audio from my camera ends up full of static if sent to RUclips unconverted).
As soon as Casino Night Zone showed up in Keepers page it Had to be seen!
Its my fav piano suited piece all of the Sonic 2 games!
Well done, a fantastic job!
so you give him a simple lead sheet and he just improvises over that?
amazing
Why couldn't my music teacher be this cool?
Ahhhh! My favorite Sonic theme! So well played. Bravo sir!
THAT WAS SO FKKN AWESOME! SOOO MUCH THANKS! I CANT BELIEVE THIS! THANK YOU!

I freaking love this video, it brings me so much joy every time RUclips recommends it to me.
Pass me the whiskey, were going old west.
+LenstarFire242 This has nothing to do with the old west. Ragtime is jazz-era stuff from the late 1800s and early 1900s.
Indy The Great you realize when the old west took place right?

I think I like this one better than the jazzy Sonic Generations one. This is legendary talent, man. Keep up the good work.
I love all of these videos. I can't stop dancing around. This man is highly skilled.
This is the greatest thing I’ve ever seen
Keeper1st, I just found your videos yesterday. Thank you so much for making all these scores. I haven't been this giddy in a while.
This has been my favorite song for a very long time and I don't know if it's place will ever be taken. I really hope that one day someone else or myself will transcribe it so that I am able to learn it and play it for myself
I really enjoy this. I watch every upload on this channel. :) Thanks for the music.
Always my favorite song out of the Sonic series. This was awesome!
It's pretty incredible how happy I get every time I watch Tom sight-read a video game tune. Thanks, everybody!
I hope Tom knows how much we appreciate his music videos! And thank you for recording and uploading them! :)
Get this dude in a saloon and give him a DAMN GOOD SALARY!!! He's MORE THAN WORTH IT!
Today I am putting in my official resignation for piano.
If Sega reuses the Casino Night Zone, this is the one and only gentleman who should provide the music. Hats off. Blown away
Unfortunately Tom is not physically able to play anymore since suffering a severe head injury four years ago.
@@Keeper1st Im very sorry to hear that and feel for Tom and family. It is not fair that this level of talent should be stripped away. I am glad, at least, that you recorded these videos. Now Tom's playing is etched into history for all to enjoy
This makes me want to gamble my rings in the slots machine and drink a beer
Is there a chance to ever see one day a transcription of this...this...easy stuff ? No, wait, I mean horribly difficult but amazingly great stuff ?
Pretty please ? :)
Always a pleasure to watch and hear Tom playing ! And thanks Keeper1st for sharing it with us !
I can't believe this video still only has 115k! this song knocks my socks off every time I hear it
The best piano ver.
Tom drops that god-tier banger.
1 guy claps.
Someone get this guy a gig!
@@LockeRobsta He had gigs before the injury, including an Australia & New Zealand tour in 2015. This video was recorded late at night after a ragtime society meeting, so there was no audience to speak of.
What an amazing performance and arrangement!
The thing that's weird to me is how similar his improvising ended up sounding to the version of this song Sega used in Sonic Generations. I guess there's only so many variations on a chord set.
i cry... so memories...
I love ragtime piano, and this is my favorite song from Sonic 2. This is a match made in heaven!
Thank you for this. Truly. Makes me cry. The art, the nostalgia, the genius, the love. Little
Things like this make my life worth it.
I've always loved this piece since sonic 2 came out. Makes me feel at peace.
This brings tears to my eyes.. It might be allergies but still. xD
This is friggin fantastic!!
I love all the vidogames songs played by this guy. I think you should make a CD with all the videogames songs.
Tom Brier really should be required reading for any class on music theory.
Thanks once again for the upload and effort involved, doubtful it'll ever fall on deaf ears.
YES BEST SONIC THEME BY BEST PIANO PLAYER! I hope you can recover well Tom. Hopes up!
Wake up, Tom! You have a whole Cuphead bgms to play!
i cant stop tapping my fingers when i hear this guy play
This gave me a huge smile!
Hats off to you, sir. Let me buy you a whiskey!
Tom didn't drink. He'd accept a rootbeer float, though!
Wooo, today's a Tom Brier Upload day! All is right with the world.
The song has a dark tune.
I like how you play it Tom!
The next best candidate from Sonic games, in my opinion, is the Special Stage from Sonic 3D Blast. I sent Ron a simple arrangement I did some months ago. I hope he can finalise it and show it to Tom. Casino Night was suggested by me, too, but I didn't partake in this arrangement, all the awesomeness in the score is thanks to Ron himself. And all the awesomeness in the video is thanks to Tom, of course.
We Love you, Tom Brier
he is a legend
👏 Absolutely Awesome!!
As an advid fan of this style and Sonic, Tom, I would like to buy you a whole case of root beer! I hope you are on the up and up and getting better and better each day!
You should send this and your other video game covers into Overclocked Remix! They'd love this shit!
This people, is proper talent!!
Yes!!! I've been waiting so much for this one, now I am happy :)
Monster sight reader! Wow
this is really cool i love this song and this style of music.
This guy is an example for the entire humanity.
Miss Tom Brier 😞
Would like to hear some new interpretations/arrangements by him.

This sounds like I just walked into a saloon fight
When i was like 8, i heard the original and said "man, this can be a saloon bar one... On a piano"
And now, i'm here hearing the simple idea in real life lol
Greetings from Argentina
Awesome cover. Sounds like the style of music being played at bars in the old Wild West. (Grabs a bottle of whiskey)
Only in the movies. This style of music came along a few decades later.

That tune reminds me of Las Vegas casinos.
So the way these were done were you, the uploader, created basic ragtime versions of classic video game themes, and once he got to the point where it just would repeat endlessly without further development (as classic video game themes do), he would then start improvising upon the foundation? I just ask out of curiosity. I really love these videos by the way. What an incredible player he is.
Yeah, he'd go back and play the strains differently each time. That's why it was so fun to give him stuff -- even your own compositions. You never knew what you were going to get.
