Hades is the oldest, Poseidon the middle and Zues is the youngest. After the original Olympic gods defeated the titans all 3 male god's drew straws Hades drew the shortest so he has domain of the underworld, Poseidon the middle straw commands the Seas and oceans, and Zues that drew the longest straw commands the Sky and title of Head of the Pantheon
Thanks for sharing that interesting piece of information! It's always fascinating to learn about the hierarchy and domains of the Greek gods.
@@TheMontyVerse however! Whilst hades is technically the eldest of the brothers, he's regarded as the youngest, as the gods go by who came out of their *Fathers* stomach first, not their mothers, and zeus never got eaten, so he's the eldest, and hades was vomited out last, so he's the youngest of the three.
When they decapitated her she evaporated like all monsters do when they die, but her head remained because it is a war prize like the minotaur's horn
Woah, that's some next-level monster trivia! Thanks for dropping that knowledge in the comments!
19:27 Percy definitely didn't memorize the song, he only remembered the first line then added "Consensus!" to the end because he didn't remember the rest.
Which is very in-character for this seaweed brain. 😄
he fooled me 😂
16:06 Annabeth pointed to her neck so Percy knew where to aim
Love that!
in the first episode they mention a thing called the mist. normal people don’t see mythical things because of it and that includes Annabeth’s hat.
I totally forgot about the mist there....or maybe the mist made me forget about the mist?
16:10 When Medusa got decapitated the rest of her body disintegrated like most/all monster except for her head which becomes a spoil of war (monsters sometimes leave behind things when they die that serves as trophy for the hero e.g. the minotaur horn)
Thanks for pointing that out! It's always fascinating to discover these little details in mythology.
It's also likely done this way (they don't even show the dust) - to limit the gore and make the whole situation way more humane. They made Medusa less of a monster and more like a vengeful human with magical power (which she is in some myths and partly in the books). Keeping her death "off-screen" was just respectful from the production standpoint.
8:42 Remember the mist? It hides every magical thing from normal humans.
I may or may not have forgot about it in the moment 😂
Another great video! Looking foward for more
12:35 I don't know if they'll explain later in the series(probably they will, since the series is way more loyal to the books than the movies were), but, long story short, the Greek gods make their abode wherever the heart of human civilization changes it's location, so that they won't lose their influence. They were born in Ancient Greece, then moved to the italian peninsula, where the Roman Empire was originated, and thousands of years later, when the center of western civilization in the world became America, the gods moved there(I say "there" and not "here" 'cause I'm actually brazilian 😅)
Thank you so much for the info! I am glad you are enjoying the videos!
so in the books it gets explained that the reason all the greek gods and monsters are in the US now is because Mount Olympus (the home of the gods) follows the heart of western culture. western culture started in greece, moved to rome, then western europe, then eventually made its way to the united states
I love that!
“if your not a monster, what are you?
“a survivor”
“you must be a little more than that”
❤ love that rick used the roman version of medusas story. she didn’t deserve to get punished, medusas rape was not her fault.
2:00 No reason, not really. I don't know if they are ever gonna mention it in the TV show so here you go: The Oracle just has a cheeky sense of humour, that's why it chose Gabe, cause it knew it would annoy Percy. Which it did LOL
Aaactually, Hades doesn't live in L.A., nor does he explicically live _under_ L.A., there are several entrance points to the Underworld all across the globe. Don't want to spoil anything, so I'll just say it has something to do with Daedalus, and there's also an entrance Orpheus used to use. Anyway, L.A. is just the closest access point they know about at this point.
Woah! I am excited to learn more!
Goddd the eyebrow raise at the camera every time the topic of who the betrayer is came up had me laughing EVERY time. Loved yall's reaction to this episode! Cant wait for the next one
That's how you know I'm super focused 😂
fun fact the first statue you see when you come down into medusas basement is reaching out tenderly as if to lift up a veil.....
6:14 they’re jerks in literally every universe lol especially zeus
Facts!
i think everyone forgets grover promised sally he will protect percy and sally TRUSTED him with this. and this all happened in front of percy. like it makes sense percy feels confident enough about grover not betraying him
8:48 THE MIST !!!!!!
Ok...maybe not that fast.
@@TheMontyVerse 😂😂😂
They explain in the book that Olympus moves to wherever the world seat of power is. Currently it's the US
Thanks for sharing that insight! I love learning more about the Percy Jackson universe.
The greek gods being located in the US is explained in the books. I dont exactly remember why it's the case, but I think the greek pantheon just relocates to different countries every centurie or something.
It always goes to the center of power. So whenever the global power changes it shifts
Thanks for the info!
not seeing medusas body is a good choice bc we never see her evaporate, plays into the idea of who is a monster and also dignifies her death a little more. percy seeing a headless lady he killed who has so much connection to sally melt?.... yeah no.
oh you got the medusa thing down! im glad you got the shades of her story
12:36 Gods move where the heart of civilization burns the brightest.
I came here to try to help answer some questions, but I see that the PJ crew already got y’all. You love to see it!!! Loving these reactions fam. Great stuff
YEAHHHHHHHH amazing amazing amazing reaction, very much enjoy yall appreciating all the details and just so good at analyzing stuff i am ECSTATIC
Thank you so much! This comment means the world, I'm so happy to hear you are enjoying our commentary and reviews!
Statuesque colours? Very nice.
Thanks! I have a deep appreciation for the use of color, set and costume design so I like to point it out whenever I get the chance.
@@TheMontyVerse It's amazing to get to do that, and hearing about audiovisual bits interlocking, making symbolism, it's just a pleasure. Can't do it too much myself since I don't pick up on too much in one sitting, but I've got so many watchful people out there to help!
The candy name is just the demigod's dyslexia kicking in.
The Greek gods have always been dicks, even ancient literature portrays them as inherently flawed like humans. It’s like an interesting idea of how much destruction human flaws could make when given the powers and lifespan of gods. It’s why I love ancient mythology the most, the gods are revered but not because anyone thinks they’re perfect.
tl; dr - the Big Three together control what the Greeks understood as all of creation in three components (the sky, the sea, the underworld).
Cronus-king of Titans-had six children prior to the Titanomachy (war between the Titans and the Olympian gods): Hestia, Demeter, Hera, Hades, Poseidon, and Zeus.
When Cronus had been overthrown, his three male children took over his dominion and divided it amongst themselves. Zeus, who had destroyed Cronus, became king and took the sky, Poseidon took the sea, and Hades took the underworld. Some myths include additional details about the extent to which each god was (dis)pleased with his piece, and they sometimes disagree (Hades may have been tricked into taking the underworld or he may have fooled his brother into claiming the “empty” sky).
They are the “Big Three” because all of the cosmos is controlled by them, with the rest of the gods controlling either minor elements of their domains (e.g. the sun, the moon, rivers, lakes, etc.) or more abstract concepts (e.g. love, war, intelligence).
Thank you so much for taking the time to explain the background of the Big Three in such detail!
5:40 glad to see he got it nice
I am getting there! I'm a fast learner
Medusa wasn't some villain in the myths. In one version, it is said that she was a priestess of Athena, who was raped by Poseidon, on the floor of Athena's temple and Athena cursed her to petrify anyone who looked at her, as punishment for “defiling” her temple. Not a spoiler but as said Poseidon, Zeus and Hades was born from the Titan Cronus who ate his Children and Zeus made throw it up which he killed him.
'The Greek God's are kinda dicks in this universe'
They have always been kinda dickish
the Greek gods were seen as what was true, not what was ideal, they could be kind and charitable; but they were often mean spirited, vindictive, and ill tempered
for example: Hera regularly punishes her unfaithful husband's innocent children wether they be God or mortal
Happy new year monty hope you have a good day
Poseidon, zues, and hades are brothers and the oldest gods of the 12, the rest are there children or some other concoction but that’s why they are the big three and then they split up the sky, the sea, and the underworld between them
Depending on the myth, the oldest Olympian is actually Aphrodite. Many versions of the myth have her birthed by Cronos's father being castrated, and his jewels falling into the sea, when Cronos over-threw him. Of the other Olympians, Poseidon, Hera, and Demeter are all older siblings of Zeus by Cronos and Rhea; as were Hades and Hestia, though technically neither of them are Olympians. Hades rules the Underworld, and while he still has familial ties to Olympus, he's technically not one of the rulers on it. And Hestia was an Olympian goddess, but gave up her throne to Dionysus, so that he could join. The other seven Olympians are all Zeus's children, though out of the seven (Hephaestus, Hermes, Athena, Apollo, Artemis, Ares, and Dionysus) only Hephaestus and Ares are the children of Zeus and his wife Hera.
@@R0ary yea I was not tryna do all that my explanation was perfectly fine if he wanted what you said he could just read the Percy Jackson books
@@Zingwing6969 It's been years since I read the books, so I'm not sure of how much of that even is in them, or which myths the books use for various gods and goddesses. That wasn't about the books, it was pure myth nerd rant. And even then, I held myself back. I'm still having to hold myself back from going on about various myth things that may or may not tie into any of the books.
19:25 he didn’t memorize the song lol, those weren’t really the lyrics
Damn, he got me 😂
So the gods transfer to different countries depending on where the strength of western civilization is strongest. For the series that would be the US. Thats the book explanation anyway
Thank you for sharing that explanation! It's always great to learn more about the intricate details of the series.
Zyuranger ep 25 and 38
There is a reason they live in America but it hasn’t been delved into yet. I’m sure it will or if not I’m sure someone in this comment section will enlighten you
Thank you for pointing that out! We're always excited to learn more about the Percy Jackson universe, and we're grateful for viewers like you who share their knowledge with us.
I believe this series takes place in the past when the books take place which I think is like 2012 maybe so a little cheaper on expenses
That would make sense!
Percy was born on August 18th 1993 if you go by the release date of the books. But no date is ever mentioned in the books and Rick Riordan himself said that Percy's story is happening "in the present day".
The big three of the Greek gods are brothers. The rest of the 12 are sisters or children of the big three. Sexism is why Poseidon Hades and Zeus are the big three.
In the words of Red from Overly Sarcastic Productions: "Ancient Greece was cool with a lot of things. Women were not one of those things."
The gods follow the most advanced (western civilization) which is currently the united states.
That is actually a great explanation
If you look at the stories of any Greek Mythology they are all crappy but really fantastic. The other thing Gods are very take what they want. Also if want learn about more stuff Assassin Creed Odyssey gives a little but the same as the older God War games.
why would poseidon not be a big three ?
IDK!!!
It’s probably because Greece is right on the Mediterranean
Are you guys slow?
This is a very constructive comment, I am proud of your originality!
