The classical beginning introduction was added to give Kevin time to put his cello away...then Mitch and Scott slid over and Kevin joined them on stage to beatbox. The fan filming with the phone was just so goo-goo, ga-ga over Mitch that for the majority of the actual song they filmed/focused only on him. BTW this is what you get when you pour 2 Red Bulls into a severely jet-lagged Mitch and then send him on stage...
Sorry to disappoint you guys...it absolutely WAS a fan phone from the upper balcony (!!), and two...Kevin was putting his Cello away at the start, but you should notice that Mitch and Scott moved over when Avi started his solo and then you can HEAR Kevin in the background after that !!! Otherwise, nice reaction !!
The reason there's no background noise is because the crowds in SE Asia are very respectful of the musicians. They scream for things likes Avi's low notes, but when the song starts the go quiet(er) again. I notice this on a lot of songs from the Asia tours. Unlike our American crowds, who talk through the performance. Or, heaven help us, sing along. As others have said, the Christus Factus opening was just to get the cello put away. There are at least a dozen other recordings from the Star Vista concert. Most are fantastic.
Avi DID blow the speaker in this concert, lol. Impish is a good description. Aha is a spooky song, and Mitch always gets into character for a song. If you ever see the official video, they are zombies in it.
Thanks for the reaction. Mirch was jet lagged and downed 2 Red Bulls. Highly strung, he went hyper. Check out O Holy Night to be blown away by Kirstie's belt and Matt's vocals which will take u to church
Scott and Kirstin doing all the syncopated background parts, with Kevin just going off, is hard to do in a studio environment where you can do it over and adjust things electronically in mixing. The difficulty of doing this live is about a 20 on a scale of 1 to 10. Crowd noise, sound delays (just a fact with sound traveling through cords and wi-fi) the adrenaline of being in front of a crowd, and anything else that can happen live, this is a whole other level talent and discipline. If any of them get off track or off beat doing this song it could turn into a train wreck in a hurry. I don't think there are too many people, outside of these special five, that could do this and do it that well.
Have been to PTX a couple of times. The crowds are much quieter than a usual concert crowd. I think their fans really want to hear the vocals. It is almost like seeing a play or musical. I do think Avi did damage the speakers in the intro.... The official video is really kind of crazy and kind of appropriate for this time of year. Think ghost stories or Zombies.
The easiest answer is to ask a pentaholic it's a phone. listen again, avi did blow the speaker at the end of the choral piece. kevin was putting away his cello so they filled the time with the choral piece. kevin is back onstage to beatbox
Avi taught them the intro. It is a phone video. This went viral. Watched this hundreds of times and are still amazed. You can hear Kevin with the effects. TX guys. Appreciate you. Greetings from South Africa. Yes Avi did blow the speaker. They have a official video for this. Greetings from South Africa.
The lead-in to "Aha!" is a neo-classical piece, "Christus Facus Est", which Avi brought to the group, having performed the full piece with one of the 3 choral groups he was in in college (where he was an opera/classical voce major and composing/arranging minor prior to joining PTX in 2011). PTX stopped using it when Avi left in 2017 since it had been his idea, and they tried different replacements, none of which apparently stuck.
I had to watch this a couple of times to appreciate the vocals on it. They also did a version of this in their Hollywood Bowl 2022 concert. It’s professionally recorded. People who go to their shows want to hear them sing. Standing up screaming and losing your mind over them sort of interferes with that. There are plenty in of opportunities to interact in songs and singalong with them. Of course every audience is different. I’ve seen that when I watched their tour videos. Some audiences are just more active than others.
Imogen Heap is a Broadway star who has done things like playing Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West in the play Wicked....incidentally one of Scott and Mitch's fave Broadway shows. The two actually did a piece, Defying Gravity, from the play on their Superfruit channel. And the whole group did another piece from the play at a venue. Both sets were impressive for the vocal skills Mitch and the partner ( in the venue part it was Kirstie who took the part of Glenda the Good Witch). I highly recommend watching Defying Gravity. Yes...Avi busted the speakers at the venue...you can hear the growliness of them halfway through.
The song itself is actually very interesting. It's Imogen Heap's commentary on hypocrisy in various forms. The first verse references a friend of hers who supposedly had many dietary restrictions-wouldn't eat meat, dairy, eggs, etc, but then was eating cookie (British "biscuit", with wheat and eggs) after dinner. The second verse is about people (perhaps politicians, perhaps others) who make a big show of environmentalism, but then drive large gas-guzzling cars, and so on. The song is a great vehicle for Mitch's voice! PTX's official video for it has a "Halloween" vibe to it, but this video that you reacted to is probably more well known than their official video because (as others have said) it's jet-lagged Mitch on stage after 2 Red Bulls.
I first heard the Imogen Heap original when it was used for a group dance on So You Think You Can Dance before PTX covered it. Highly recommend checking out that dance performance, btw!
Just saw them for the 45h time two weeks ago, 2nd row and they do this song early in their set and Mitch, when his voice is still stunning, he doesn't move like he did 9 years ago. They are incredibly talented!
Kevin is performing in this song. He arrives later and he does beat box. If you notice, Mitch and Scott move their right when Kevin arrives. He is not shown by the person taking the video, but he is there. You can see them move and hear his contribution.
This performance is usually considered the ultimate Mitch Slap. Also, Avi did blow out the speaker (at least one of the "woofers") with that crazy low note at the end of the intro... the bass is "fuzzy" all the way through the rest of the song. Mitch was outright on fire that night... legend is that he was jetlagged and had chugged several Red Bulls before going on stage.
They sing this song to give Kevin time to put his Cello away and get to the song. The song is kind of creepy and you should go and watch the official video of this. I think it was a type of Halloween song.
Yep...lead in to the official video was "creepy stories told around the campfire" thing and then it moved to a video of the creepy/scary story. It was quite well done, actually.
Fun fact this truly was recorded on a fan's phone from the balcony. avi Had blown the speaker system before this Earlier in their performance.Focused on Focused on Mitch you don't get to see all 5 of them on stage but Kevin is thereMitch. I've also seen them perform this live in concert And it was just as amazing then as it is in this performance Though Mitch was heavily influenced by the red bulls that he had drank earlier.
Nope - Kevin definitely is onstage beat-boxing like a crazy man through all of Aha! He had been sitting in the middle for the prior song playing his cello, then went offstage to put it away. Hence the large space between Kirstie and Mitch during the choral piece. Right after Avi does his wonderful bass drop, you can see Mitch move to the center of the stage, Scott follows him, and Kevin comes onstage next to him. The only flaw in the epic video is that the person recording it never pulled back enough to show Kevin, which is such a shame. We have dubbed this video "Aha! aka Where's Kevin"! You don't see him, but you can definitely hear all his crazy beats and rattles and whooshes.
It was a phone. The phone didn't pick up crowd noise because the fans were listening, quietly, not because it was some kind of superphone. And it's pretty arrogant to dispute the description, written by the fan who actually shot the video.
The official video has a lot of intricacies that were not apparent in this amazing performance. Avi does overtones in the official video. I hope you will return to Avi's solo music!
Sorry to Butcher but this time he's full of shit. Just cuz YOU don't wanna believe doesn't make it untrue. It's a phone recording. If you want to see for real what Pentatonix is capable of live and in one take, check out Kiss From a Rose live. ruclips.net/video/I3NEFUOLtxs/видео.html

They did an amazing job filming!

The story is that Mitch was suffering from major jet lag and was pumped up on Red Bull. Also Avi had shredded the sound system earlier.

😊The video is a "scary movie"

Yep! Matt does a solo, rather classical style, intro for Aha these days. I saw them do it this Summer. It worked well.

Oh, Yeah! The Avi & Mitch show! Excellent! ❤
Oh yeah!

I'm so glad you all added this to your reactions 💖
Us too!

Yes! This is my favorite AHA version, Mitch {and Avi} did amazing! Thanks for the reaction!
Our pleasure!

Recommend their official video of Aha. Great for Halloween.
We will!
The ultimate Mitch slap. Along with the Avi gut punch. Thank you jet lag and 2 red bulls.

Agreed. Couple of these guys need the Jaws of Life to wedge their little minds open.
PTX crowds are quiet. They’re almost treated more like a classical music group/ symphony as opposed to a rock or pop concert.
I’m so excited. I get to see them in person in December. I hope it’s so quiet I can hear a mouse fart.
Oh this is the one Mitch had one to many redbulls and went crazy lol.
Since you mentioned the vampire vibe, recommend their official video of My Favorite Things for Halloween.
if you watch the official video of this cover, they do a zombie based sort of story line. So, maybe he was working in that "theater."
I loved Mitch's haircut back then. It's perfect for the shape of his face.
The official video has a lot of intricacies that were not apparent in this amazing performance. Avi does overtones in the official video. I hope you will return to Avi's solo music!
Matt's last name is Sallee, pronounced Suh-lee', emphasis on the second syllable. I've no idea how you came up with Sealey.
😂😂 Jerzey's face at the beginning...like wtf is this?

Way to ruin a great performance! Your inopportune pauses (I'll say nothing of the banter) ruined that.
Which is difficult to do - Congratulations!
Thank you, we enjoy being different and giving our real time thoughts and reactions!
