I've seen it from front row several times!!! I have just been WAITING for you to do this one! Kevin is my favorite!! (All my Pentaholic buddies know this - it's no secret - but I love them all! 💜. (I even got a PENTAHOLIC tattoo! - at age 62 even! My 1st tattoo!! I'm posting this before I even watch it ... I'll probably post again afterwards too! XO
They have always had a "let Kevin flex" moment in shows. First started rather modest with "just" celloboxing a piece. Now they are up to these kind production (even added a Matt flexing moment with full drumset recently). They are usually in the background naturally since they are doing the foundation so I love that they have full segment to let loose and awe the people who are not as musically enclined and would otherwise miss out the magic they are doing throughout the show!
I saw this in concert twice, and on both occasions, Kevin (and Matt and the dancers) got a very long and enthusiastic standing ovation. The dancers here are Cost & Major, a married couple of dancer/choreographers with a quite famous tiktok channel. They have become good friends of the band, Scott in particular, as he shows up in their tiktoks dancing with them from time to time (because Scott has the energy of 47 people and is everywhere doing everything always, lol). They danced throughout the Christmas Extravaganza concert. Pentatonix definitely creates a very different vibe between their summer concert tours and their Christmas tours. For Christmas they dress more formally and often have extras, like the dancers, and are a little more dramatic in their presentation. The summer shows are a bit more casual and less pageant-y, (no judgement of either, I love both!). I'm sure you will be getting the recommendation for what they did the following year, if you haven't already. Kevin re-arranged and sampled Pentatonix's Grammy winning Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy, calling it "Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy REIMAGINED" in the live stream video on RUclips. Matt joined in again, this time with a full drum kit and some live singing. Again, live it was absolutely mind-blowing. I liked it even more than Kevin's Fifth in some ways. One of the nice things about the first time I saw Kevin's Fifth live, is that they showed video of him playing all the recorded string parts on accoustic cello up behind him on the stage. Great reaction! (checked out the whole thing on Patreon)
I was there when they filmed this - it was AMAZING from front row - & Kev was directly in front of me! I was on cloud nine for... well, I'll let you know when! 😉
Seeing kevin do this live in person is really incredible. He gets standing ovations every time he does his cello part during a ptx show and i even think he has one better than this. Kevin and Matt doing dance of the sugar plum fairy re-imagimed at their Christmas tour brings the house down even more. Plus Matt's on a full drum set and really goes for it. I recommend that for your next kevin reaction.
Cost 'n Mayor are the two dancers with Kevin; they accompanied and performed during the PTX 2022 Christmas tour, as well as performing in the music video for Kid On Christmas with Meaghan Trainor. In Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy Reimagined (which might be slightly more your cup of tea), Matt uses a full drum kit, rather than the two toms and the drum pad he used in this version. I think PTX/Kevin/Matt may have wanted to see how the audiences would react before they decided to drag around a full drum kit on tour!
As a violinist, I am constantly in awe of Kevin and his insane talents. What he can do with that cello sends shivers down my spine! And yes, seeing this performed live (from the fifth row) was nothing less than magical. Cost 'n Mayor are incredible dancers.
🕺. .. I think he should dance in every Pentatonix video. I was wondering when you would get to this performance Sir. Kevin is massively talented and I applaud Pentatonix for giving him this platform. 🎻🎻🎻🎻🎻🎻
Yes, this was awesome to see live! Another Kevin (and Matt) performance that would be good for your Christmas list would be Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy Reimagined. I saw that live too and... just wow. You could feel the whole stadium so captivated the entire song. It was from their 2023 xmas tour, and there's a high quality video of it from their live stream.
I was lucky enough to see this performed live. On the overhead screens, I was amazed to see that Kevin was playing the background track as well. What an incredible talent he is!
Kevin and Matt have an absolutely crazy energy together on live stage. Going to see them again in November, can't wait! If you ever get the chance to see them live...TAKE it! I think the dancers are Cost and Mayor. They toured with PTX that season.
The dancers also performed at Scott and Mark's wedding - I can't think of their names - but they are friends - ruclips.net/video/6FT9StTZekc/видео.html You will enjoy watching this just for the experience - Scott and friends dance to a popular Black Pink song - and it's such a fun video. Oh their names are Cost and Mayor.
Kevin's 5th is definitely better in person. I remember that piece from back in the day. Good times! Yeah, I'm old, but I listened to great music growing up and am a full-fledged 61 y/o Pentaholic today. I love your channel, Sir Hairless. 👍
His The Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy Reimagined from the 2023 live stream is really well done. It has more interactions with Matt. You may like it. Possibly more.
I had the pleasure of seeing this concert and Kevin is definitely AMAZING to listen to and watch when you are in the arena! Pentatonix's entire concert was definitely first class and something I will always cherish!
Yes, this is electric to see in person! I got to see PTX live last week and Kevin and Matt (with a full drum set) did this number. The audience loves it!
Thank you so much. Only now did I hear the 2strings (the "plucking with the bow")at the beginning. Agreed, not what one expected but is that not what all of PTX does? Love surprises! Greetings from South Africa
No you just didn't! I'm so thrilled you did this. I relate to this piece so freaking much as a violist and drummer. I know I've shared with you that I can't capture instrumentals very well, but this is no problem. Whenever I watch this video, I say to myself, "this was written just for me. Best piece of arranged music for a hearing impaired/deaf person that played the viola and drums." Absolutely, a 100% spot on, analysis. Your facial expressions were all over the map. It was really fun watching you do this one. Be well!
Told you I'd post again! 😉 I have to say - YES! You HAVE, HAVE, HAVE to see them live!!! The entire show is amazing & totally unexpected!!! You would love it, I'm sure!!! Last year they did Kissed by a Rose (Seal cover, I'm sure you know!) and it was flabbergasting! Lol! If you haven't reacted to that one yet, you really should!
The dancers are Cost 'n Mayor . They have a choreographed and participated in Pentatonix Kids on Christmas video and I believe have toured with Pentatonix. They are a married couple and super talented.
Not that I think you will actually MISS me, but I'm having back surgery next Tuesday so may not be online much for a bit. Kevin truly is a musical genius. I saw this at a concert last year - the energy between Matt and Kevin is amazing.
THANK YOU! Just lovely to get a personal note from you. I thought I would send along the link for my invitation to share "Kiss from a Rose". originally a Seal tune (1994). I have learned so much and and truly appreciate all that you do to enrich the experience of music.
This is not the only version of Kevin beatboxing to Beethoven’s Fifth available on YT. If you look for “Kevin Olusola From the Top,” you’ll find a 17-year-old Kevin performing at NYC’s famed Carnegie Hall for the PBS series From the Top, a nationally-broadcasted show that highlighted young musicians. He is there playing saxophone, but after, the host has him beatbox the Fifth as a “penalty” for him being just too darn good.
Sound off!!! I was in high school band & I just loved marching onto the field with the drum cadence... I wouldn't trade my years in band (7th thru 12th) for anything!!!
Okay, so I went down your PTX list...let me invite you to the tears and chills of truly moving pieces of music....PTX Halleluja ( during the AVI Era. It's the least I can do for all the joy you have given THANK YOU THANK YOU.
Just wanted to say, you’ve become my favorite reactor very quickly. I enjoy your takes and your expertise, I’ve learned quite a bit watching you. I’d like to see you react to a Take 6 vid, God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen if you can!
Kevin’s being so many instruments here at once 🔥🔥🔥 The guy is such a powerhouse of musical ideas. And to combine playing with dancing and beatboxing in one performance, man that’s something…!! LOVED his rhythmical bow chops, the vast repertoire of sounds colours he’s got - and when he comes in with that break! - I thought it was a friggin electric guitar at first 🔥😱🔥 When I saw the title I thought he might’ve discovered a new interval discovered, ‘Kevin’s Fifth’, sort of Jacob Collier-style 😉 Instead this was one fire piece, with the most engaging mix of different genres… Thanks for the breakdown of this performance. It was interesting and covered so many aspects of this crazy performance 👍 Coming from classical music performance, geeking out like this is my kind of jam :) In the same league as Pentatonix, Voces8 and so many other great contemporary ensembles is Swedish Fusion trio Dirty Loops. If you have a minute, check them out. Two pieces in particular might be interesting to you: “Next to You” and “Work Shit Out”. The craftsmanship of all these three guys (vocals/piano, bass and drums) is out of this world. I always love your reaction 💖 Please react to Aha! - Pentatonix, the Singapore live one (originally by Imogen Heap, i noticed that you mentioned her a view times 😂).It was so good and i'm curious because they were singing something before they sing Aha! Also Natural Disaster live performance where Avi hit a very low note that he almost broke the speakers, and Hit The Road Jack live performance is the one that Avi really broke the speakers. They have a lot of popular live performance, there's also one that they sing in a room without any microphone and still sounds so good. Sorry if my English is not good, it's not my first language. Love from Indonesia ❤
Kevin and Matt are extraordinary doing a more traditional music video “Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy REIMAGINED” Matt plays a whole drum set also. Please give it a listen
i wish you had done the first 2 pieces, he plays julio o which went viral at the same time ptx was looking on you tube for beatboxers. his next piece is bach's cello suite #5. listen on your own it's very good. so glad you did this reaction
Thanks for the reaction. Kevin arranged, produced and performed his version starting in 2022. VoicePlay did their version in 2024. Kevin was not inspired by VoicePlay's version. Kevin studied and played classical music at professional concert level since he was a teenager.
I mentioned "A Fifth of Beethoven" in my VoicePlay's "Classical Chaos" reaction video. Kevin was inspired by "A Fifth of Beethoven", as you can see by the clips I show
Kevin is just brilliant in so many ways!! Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy Reimagined is AWESOME. I hope you’ll check it out as well. I actually like it better than this one. 😊

It’s a whistle. Among other things, Matt was a drum line percussionist. The whistle is a fixture for a lot of US marching band drum majors.

Sounds like "A fifth of Bethoven"
I show clips of that in this video, and point out the initial comparisons
Those of you who have seen PTX in person..... Is the stage really as dark as it seems in these concert videos?
It depends on the song and the atmosphere they're going for. In this part it was, but it isn't as dark in general.
They change the lighting throughout the whole show.
I didn't go in person that year but did watch the livestream of this tour and I remember noticing that this whole show seemed darker than their other tours for some reason.
Kiss From A Rose, Vevo live, just sayin'
Sir H, seriously - they was straight up horrible.. Just another 30 seconds i wasted.
