      Thanks for the added apology-but really, I assume reaction videos are to music & possibly artists that the reactor *isn't* an expert on, so mispronunciations aren't a big deal IMO. 🤓

    Kevin as a musician and not just a beatboxer is what helpts set ptx apart from other a capella groups. There was once a guy helps teach at a capella acadamy that tweeted "being a vocal percussionist is 5% rehearsing and 95% watching youtube while you wait for the others to learn their parts." Then Scott responded "unless your vocal percussionist is the best at reading music and helps everyone learn their parts." You dont play Carnegie Hall at 17 just from being an okay musician. Long before he joined ptx. All while he had plans to become a dr. Ptx and sing off had other plans for him.

    Kevin's channel features a variety of musical experiments /exercises, going back to his cello-boxing when he was still in college. It does not have the viral video by which Scott first found him online -- his cello boxing version of Mark Summer's "Julie-O" -- but you can find it online. The other offerings include cello and cello-boxing covers of pop and classical pieces, some with vocals, and/ or looping, both solo and with other musicians. Also a series of auto-biographical videos. In 2015 he released his Renegade EP; the title track is an original and worth checking out.

    Thanks so much for doing this one - I was really hoping you would do it as I knew as a musician you would really appreciate Kevin's insane musical talent! What can you say about his beatboxing and cello playing on this one...just unbelievable, but what I really love is his singing. His voice is so beautiful and, as you mentioned the fact he has perfect pitch and is so intensely musical does lead him to make really clever and satisfying musical choices. When he goes up the octave into his gorgeous falsetto - especially when he goes up the scale rather than down on the 'down diddy down diddy down' at 2:30 (I was surprised you didn't pick up on that - i.e. going up when singing down in Down!) it's just gorgeous.
    I always learn something from your reactions and analysis and something that really struck me with what you said today was that vibrato can cover slight inconsistencies in pitch and if you sing with a straight tone instead there is nowhere to hide so you have to be pitch perfect. As a choir and occasional solo singer, I did instinctively know that but I'd never really thought about it before. When you first learn how to sing and listen to singers, it's often all about the vibrato - everyone thinks you have to have it to be a great singer but I'd never really thought about how it can also cover up some musical 'sins'! I was thinking that perhaps that's why bass singers have to have really excellent pitch, because they often don't have, or use, much vibrato?
    Anyway, thanks so much as always for imparting your musical knowledge in an entertaining way. I look forward as always to the next one!🤩☺

    • @SirHairless
      @SirHairless  6 месяцев назад

      There's no simple answer to that one! It all depends on various things, such as who the singer is, what the song is, what the musical context is (even things like who the audience is!)
      There's only so much vibrato can cover up; but it can certainly cover up tuning issues up to the quarter tone, which would be noticeable with flat-tone singing
      It's interesting what you say about bass singers, because from some that I've known, they tend to use the most vibrato But again, completely depends on the context! Are they singing an operatic aria or providing the bass in a jazz close-harmony arrangement? One would require heavy vibrato and the other next to no vibrato 🎶
      Also in terms of excellent pitch - I believe it doesn't matter which voice part you sing, you'll always need excellent pitch for a great performance. Buuut if we really wanted to pick a part to have the best tuning - when it comes to standard choir/choral arrangements (thinking in terms of SATB voice parts) .... and again depending on the context 😅 ... from experience, I've found the inner parts are the parts that usually require the best tuning because of the roles their parts bring; the bringers of dissonance or the harmonic 'fillings'. The bass part and the soprano parts will be the most easy to hear parts because they're the highest and lowest, so whilst their tuning issues might be more obvious, they're more forgiving due to their role
      These are just my thoughts and certainly not gospel ^

    • @neetgupta1
      @neetgupta1 6 месяцев назад

      You're right of course that operatic basses sing with a lot of vibrato, I was thinking more of basses in choirs and a cappella groups where they are holding down the bass line - they tend to sing with very little vibrato. That's something that Matt from Pentatonix has - a really lovely vibrato when he uses it. You'll get to hear that soon hopefully!
      You are right about singing on pitch - there is nothing like being in a choir to improve your pitching! I sing soprano in one SATB choir and I sing 2nd soprano in an SSA choir. The 2nd soprano role is definitely much more challenging!

    I’ve always been a bit of a string snob when it comes to wooden instruments versus electronic until several years back when I played regularly with a group with cello, electric guitars and keyboard (with vocals) where we opted to pickup my cello to maintain the balance a bit better. Still prefer the fullness of a wooden instrument amplifying naturally but this is very cool and Kevin is incredibly talented! His beatboxing is out of this world- so versatile! Something I would never have found this without your reaction. Cheers from Canada!

    Thanks for pulling this one apart. As the layers add up, we know what happens to my 👂🏻 I love watching KO play the electric cello. I was literally saying in my head, "that glissando...." and then you made the glissando comment, to which I responded in my head, "I freaking love this guy." (Not to be weird ) So cool you are doing PTX solo work, too.
    My fave PTXer is Scott and I thought his Live Choir version of Mars covered his entire range, but I was wrong! I think this linked song does; but since there is instrumentation, I have trouble separating.... I do think, however, Scott's full range is demonstrated in this piece. If you ever venture into his solo work, and remember, can you peg the range for me? I'm sure he hits G2, but I swear I hear B2, but it may be instrumental; the bottom usually drops out at that low of a pitch for me. He soars to the heavens as well. ruclips.net/video/GK0LyhXCboc/видео.htmlsi=4gT-SE-HxSHCRsVz

    Great to see you unpacking KO's work. He's very impressive isn't he! Really love the timbre of his voice, like a velvet caress! Masterful Cellist too. Classically trained. Yes, in patches he was making it sound like an electric guitar! Probably could play any stringed instrument he put his mind and fingers to. Gather he started out studying medicine and then concentrated on developing his career in music. Also speaks a number of languages fluently. VERY bright guy. Heard he may have become a bit frustrated being pigeon-holed as the Beat-Boxer in PTX and wanted to sing more. Nice to see him branching out solo and with such diversity. Maybe he does also play Sax!? I don't feel he was improvising. Yes, playing around for setting up the original composition, but, as you say; meticulous with every note - and breath between. In an odd way he reminds me of Lara Fabian, in that even though her classical training enables her to mask her breathing, she uses audible breaths very intentionaly as part of her story-telling. Kevin uses his breaths of course to punctuate and counterpoint the beats. 😊

    I'm trying to remember... I think in an interview soon after this came out KO said that he tried for most of a year to get the electric cello to sound like a guitar for this performance. I'm not a musician, but to my ear it sounds like someone shredding an electric guitar solo.

    I’m on the fence about this artist & this performance. He’s obviously extremely skilled; the song is so-so; and the execution is extremely unique & interesting.
    I’ve listened to KO’s performance (thank you for the link) without analytical interruptions, and I’ve found that I’m extremely impressed by it. While I dislike the original song, his artistry overcomes the song’s shortcomings, transforming it into something quite extraordinary.

      I'm of a similar mindset! With covers it's just luck really if the listener likes the original song or not - but that doesn't take away from Kevin's brilliance at all 🎵

    Thank you for this reaction. This is amazing, but I'm with you on the music itself -- and there are so many others that I think are much better. I can't wait for you to react to "Kevin's 5th." This live version also gives some of his background: ruclips.net/video/DbCasvcNx78/видео.html, and it includes his wonderful interpretation of the Prelude from Bach Cello Suite No.1 (although his music video of it is even better). I'd love to see you react to more of his work. Here are some favorite KOvers: Adele (Someone Like You / Hello / Set Fire to the Rain / Rolling in the Deep); Stay with Me; True Colors (this is completely a capella); Don't Let me Be Misunderstood; Human Nature; Dream It's Over; As Long as You Love Me; Heart Attack. And then there is his original, Renegade. I think you'll love this one. These will give you a sense of the breadth of his talent. Looking forward to this rabbit hole! Oh, and this Christmas, his Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy Reimagined is a must!

    Happy to see you taking a longer look at Kevin. What do you think when he audibly inhales into the mike at various points in the first singing section? Not to take anything away from the genius of the composition, but I found the noise distracting when I first heard it. I know Kevin's pumping out a lot of sound and the man does need to breathe, but would you call that repeated intake of air a disruptive sound, or is it appropriate musically and I'm being unduly critical? Love your detailed analysis, and can't imagine anyone skipping over it... it's absolutely the meat and potatoes of your reactions. 💖

      I think it comes down to preference really! There are so many different sounds produced by his beatboxing that it's quite likely that not all of them will be pleasant to everyone - but they're done with such rhythmic precision that I think they certainly have their rightful place in the song's overall structure 🎶 Also, I'd imagine they're necessary - either as part of regular or circular breathing, so Kevin doesn't run out breath 😅Beatboxing is extremely complex and not something I've ever been too familiar with
      Thanks

    • @kayecastleman6353

      @@SirHairless The section I'm referring to is before Kevin begins to beatbox, when he's only singing into the mike. The time stamp is 2:56 to 3:39, and at one point in there you say how much you like his voice. I agree, I find Kevin's voice smooth and relaxing through that verse, so those harsh inhalations break the mood for me.
