I can understand if one lives in a big city, one has to be very careful. I live in a farming area, were good, the only time I wear masks are to grocery stores or shopping for supplies.
I'm American. I've never been to Korea but after seeing Korea's reaction and how things have been handled here, I wish I was in Korea right now. I'd feel a lot safer. Too many people here took too long to take this seriously. Now that people have been taking it a little more serious (though there are plenty that still don't), we have somewhat slowed the virus down, people are trying to use that as evidence that we've overreacted, even though we haven't hit peak yet. I'm worried people will push to "go back to business as usual" and prolong our need to isolate. (I'm currently on my 3rd week of isolation/layoff from my job) I love seeing Korea's sense of community and working together to defeat this virus.
From a mom in South Africa with a daughter in Seoul- I’m just thankful that she’s there and not here. We have an incredibly vulnerable population so like New York (in terms of numbers) if it hits a township it could be catastrophic. Stay safe and pray for those back home.

individualism이랑 collectivism을 정도의 차이로 구분하는거 보면 서양사람들입장에서 우리가 collectivism적인 성격이 더 강하다고 볼순 있을꺼같아요. 번역해서 들으면 먼가 집단주의라는게 부정적으로 들리는게 있는거 같아요. 하지만 개인적가치와 집단적가치의 우선순위를 두는 정도로 봤을때, 한국에서 여기는 집단적 가치가 서양사람들보다 큰 건 맞으니까요.
어제 오늘은 마스크 안쓰고 다니는 사람들도 종종 보입니다. 홍대같은 경우 젊은이들에게 코로나는 남의 나라 일이라고 생각될 정도로 붐비더군요. 부모 형제들에게 옮길수 있다는걸 왜 모르는 걸까요. 2천만이 넘는 수도권이 뚫리면 정말 상상도 하기 싫습니다. 지금도 환자와 코로나와 씨름하는 의료진과 질본 분들의 노고를 봐서라도, 개학을 못하고 있는 우리 어린 학생들을 위해서라도 사회적 거리두기 제발 좀 지키자구요.
Can you guess what panelist I am dad of? So, update from our "neck of the woods" (a phrase meaning "local community") here in Colorado. Two days ago our State government issued a stay-at-home order, meaning don't go anywhere you do not need to go, but if it is necessary (food, medical issues or supplies, and work at essential businesses) then you can go: this condition lasts until April 11th. You can also walk or go for a run outside or go to the parks as long as you keep a 6' distance between you and all others except family members who live in your house - you can be close to one another which is good since my wife and I would not have it any other way. Maybe 5% of people here are wearing masks to shop in, maybe less. Most here would think it stupid to blame or suspect Asians just because they wear masks (some do all the time), but the first thought when seeing anyone is, "Are they sick?" By now most realize they are not. And of course we can't afford to support you in Korea, son, but could obviously take care of you here. Just saying. :-) We did not go out and clear the shelves of toilet paper. We did get low, but some came in recently and were able to get another pack. The chicken and beef have been bare but we have some now, eggs limited but sufficient, canned good gone - but no one is hungry. We hardly use canned goods anyway. I did observe a lady taking all of the available peanut butter from a display, like 30 or more jars; otherwise, it seems like people go to the stores to avoid being alone, taking their time to shop and exercise their right to grumble. Like me! By the way, about half of all cases of infections in the US are in New York city and nearby; about a 15 mile radius. Our son who lives there is fine so far.
National direction by the President is extended now to April 30th. Our State is likely to make that enforceable. It is up to each State to decide. People know the loopholes (the way around staying inside) and are taking advantage because they are sick of staying at home; nonetheless, everyone keeps their distance and the stores are settling down to less shoppers and more product available, the exceptions still being bath paper (toilet paper) and disinfectants.

Some kids ignore the warnings and play outside but that is expected. There are so many good people in America and the system is the best. People know how to solve a hard problem. It’s my senior year of high school at the moment in America. A lot of things I had planned like prom, the BTS world tour concert, graduation, final tests, college orientation are either cancelled or completely changed. I was also supposed to take a trip to Italy. I’m really worried because the US hasn’t even reached the worst it’s probably going to get but everyone’s just dealing with it in their own way.
쿠팡에 대해 오해 하시는 분이 계시셔서 하나 말씀 드리자면 쿠팡이 매진되서 주문할려면 며칠 걸렸다 아니면 주문해도 며칠후에 받았다라고 하는데 일일 소화할수 있는 물량이 정해져 있어서 그 물량을 초과하면 다음날로 넘어가거나 매진이라는 말이 떴다고 합니다.물량이 없는게 아니라 그걸 소화할수 있는 인력이 없다고 하는게 맞는겁니다. 보통 하루에 소화하는 물량이 1이라고 하고 최대치가 2라고 했을때 이번 코로나사태로 하루에 4~5를 주문해서 허용범위가 넘어간겁니다.다들 집에만 있을려고 해서....평소에 인터넷주문을 안하던 사람까지 몰려서 더 심했다고 합니다.
한국에서 살고 있으면 한국어를 어느정도 습득해야하는거 아닌지. 특히 이런 비상시국에는 더더욱. 티비에서 자막으로 영어안내를 계속내보내던데요. 한국정부는 충분히 할만큼 하고 있음. 시시각각 변화하는 긴급상황에서 메시지를 전부 영어번역해서 보내는것은 지금 시국에 가능하지않을듯.

It's an unusual situation everywhere, but I think the Australian response has been pretty good. If you look at the WHO stats, OZ and NZ are right on the heels of South Korea in getting good results and miles ahead of other places, especially Europe. Some of it was luck, some of it acting reasonably early, some of it is good management, and some of it are 'we need to learn a lot from this' I think Australians do sometimes get confused about the relationship between the Feds and States. They seem to expect the PM (no matter who he/she is) to do things that actually belong at State level and that The Feds simply have no legal authority to do. That might sometimes explain the 'why isn't theye being clearer about some things' (e.g the schools are run by the states); it's because they can't be; the Constitution doesn't allow it. With a lot of stuff he can suggest and encourage, but it's the job of the States to actually do it.

I'm relatively new to your channel and just saw this video. Just to answer a few questions about the U.S. that were brought up in the video: Toilet paper: Inaccurate information was shared via social media (especially Facebook) that all toilet paper was made in China and because of the outbreak, no other shipments would be coming from China. So shoppers thought that the stock in stores was all that was available. This led to panic buying. We actually make toilet paper in the U.S., so some of the manufacturers started advertising campaigns to reassure people. Masks: Initially, the experts and government officials actively discouraged wearing masks in the U.S., unless you were sick. The surgeon general even tweeted for people to stop buying masks. Later, the government started suggesting masks be worn, so things are better in that regard.
It's baffling how this might have spread all the way down to Latin America causing people to do the same. I couldn't understand why. Thanks for clarifying this.

개인의 사생활 침해라는 관점을 굉장히 강조하는 서구권 나라들이 있다는 걸 알게 되었는데 한국의 행정시스템을 오해한 부분도 많은 게 사실이죠.. 그런데 위 영상을 보다보니 나이와 성별을 굳이 밝히냐는 지적은 맞다는 생각이 들기도 합니다. 하지만 나이대와 성별을 밝히지 않으면 동시간대의 주변 사람들이 모를 수 있기에 밝혀야만 하는 정보일 수 밖에 없다고 생각되네요.

On top of that three years of Moon and his preference of coal over nuclear and STILL we have clear blue skies during this year February and March, unprecedented in decades. 전 이상한 질문은 아닌 것 같아요. 외국어로 대응을 해준다는 건 그만큼 글로벌 화 되어있냐는 거고, 이를 인식하고 있기 때문에 공공장소(지하철, 버스)에서는 코로나 관련 안내방송이 한국어+영어로 같이 나옵니다. 중국어 일어는 스킵한 것 같지만요. 문제 생기자마자 방송을 영어로 녹음해서 한국어랑 같이 송출하기 시작했고, 이것도 굉장히 빠른 대응이라고 생각합니다.
보통 저는 그렇게 생각합니다. 어떤 나라에 산다면 그들은 그들의 언어가 제공되기를 기대하지 말아야 해요 (근데 한 나라가 그렇게 한다면 좋겠지만). 그레도 코로나을 예방하기를 싶으면 모든 사람에게 정보를 빨리 전달하는 것이 좋습니다. 많은 언어를 제공하는 것은 나라들이 더 안전해지도록 돕습니다.
As for France, people get criticised a lot when wearing a mask. Some people would think that there’s something wrong and they might get sick, so they mind tend to be mean and say stuff such as “stay away from me”. Some people would also insult them and say that they’re trying to do like Asians do - because it is common to wear a mask in many countries in Asia. Nowadays, with the coronavirus going on, it’s the opposite: almost everyone is wearing a mask, and people who don’t get criticised when they don’t. Violence came out a lot when people weren’t wearing masks, because people get scared. French even started creating their own mask, which is ridiculous because they don’t wash it, or they don’t know how to make an efficient one. As for our situation, the Government didn’t take the measures soon enough - although sooner than other countries I might say.

@igosro83 집단주의와 공동체 주의는 동전의 양면이라고 봅니다. 전체를 위해 개인을 억압하는 것을 당연히 여긴다면 집단주의고, 전체와 개인의 이익형량을 균형있게 조절 할 수 있다면 공동체주의죠. 그리고, 대한민국은 집단주의적 성향과 공동체주의적 성향이 모두 있습니다. 평상시에는 공동체주의보다는 집단주의 성향이 강하게 나타나는 편이 많다고 봅니다. 때문에, 많은 부분에서 앞으로 나가가는데 벽을 만들죠. 하지만, 위기상황에서는 집단주의 보다는 공동체 주의로서의 장점이 더 강하게 발휘 된 것이라고 봅니다. 물론, 서구 사회은 정반대로 간것이구요.. 때문에, 한국 사회나 서구 사회 모두 공동체 주의를 발전시킬 수 있도록 노력을 해야 한다고 봅니다. 한국 사회는 개인에게 가해지는 억압을 해소하는 방향으로, 서구사회는 공동체를 위해 개인을 자제 할 수 있는 방향으로 교육이 이뤄졌으면 하네요. 이런 사태는 모두가 연대하지 않으면 절대 해결 할 수 없으니까요. 참.. 중국과 같은 경우.. 혹은 독재국가들은.. 집단주의라기 보다는 이보다더 더 가혹하게 통제가 가해지는 전체주의라고 봅니다.

I think Korea wore masks b4 the virus because it is a small country and its pretty dense with population. In the US, we did not wear masks at all b4 covid, we have big open areas. I live in a rural area, I wear no mask at all, only in grocery stores or if im shopping for supplies.
Well it's easy to be cool calm and collected when your government heeds the warnings and starts testing immediately. Unfortunately some government didn't heed the warnings and people have died . The reality in Korea is different from the reality that a lot of people are living. I have heard of families losing more than one member and in one case the whole family died. In my own family we've had distant members infected with the virus and one unfortunate death. So people are just scared, were dealing with something that we never dealt with before.
Same with you guys, month back during the outbreak of covid-19 in S Korea, all my family and friends back home are worried about me but things flipped and now it is me who is worrying about them. I feel that I am in the safest place in the world now though there are more 60 70 cases daily. Feeling positive
The not wearing a mask 😷 is such an interesting topic at the moment in Korea. I’m living and working in Gyeongsangnamdo. I was on a bus to work the other day, one Korean lady wasn’t wearing a mask and an adjumoni spoke to her saying she should be wearing a mask. But then on the other hand you see many younger people not wearing masks. I’ll continue to wear masks until I’ve been told so.

As a coronavirus a month ago, I was really desperate day by day when I heard on the news....but I really appreciate most people have been wearing a mask,keeping social distance. Really ....until now I really appreciate many people help Daegu overcome this situation....especially I was surprised first day....i saw many doctors,nurse,volunteers came here the more than I thought....we have to wear several protective equipments and a mask so I can't know their face while working, but this week I saw their face after taking off their masks for the first time and eating a lunch box . 정말 코로나바이러스로 일상의 소중함도 깨달았고,특히 대구에 파견 근무하시는 선생님들 정말 감사하고 존경스럽습니다. I studied abroad in Korea last year and honestly I miss being there more then ever now. Being someone in the United States right now during this sucks. We have no real leadership and people are not listening or protesting the stay at home order. No one wears a mask here and gave me crap for wearing a mask as soon as we had officially confirmed cases in my state. Also the it’s all about me culture here is really showing and it is really starting to get to me. I really wish people would just stay home when told to so we can protect the people who are in danger of this virus the most. I honestly would give anything to move back to Korea right now. 😔

I live in Perth, Australia and I have been wearing masks this week, but I only have surgical masks because I can't find any N95. I ordered N95 online but they didn't arrive. A handful of people at the supermarket wear a mask now. Probably half of the the people with masks are Asian. Sometimes the pharmacy get masks in stock but it's rare and they sell out straight away. I've seen an old man whinging about people wearing masks at the supermarket, and young people laughing at a woman who had a mask and gloves on. People in western countries have fallen for the "masks don't help" lies that have been spread around.
It’s quite interesting though because usually there is a big individualist outlook in the western world/here in the UK, but with the outbreak and the mass self isolation has come a big push for community, looking out for your neighbour. The major outlook is if you’re not isolating for yourself, do it for the older population. Watching the news it’s nice almost seeing people come together to help each other out
Agree with everything you guys said. I'm from Australia but have been in Korea for 7 months now and I am so glad that I'm in Korea instead of Australia right now. The situation here has been handled so so much better and it seems to be on the slow. I feel very safe and lucky to be in Korea right now. But I am sad and worried about my friends and family in Australia, as a lot of people really aren't taking it seriously. Our government is incompetent too.
Here in Canada we are in quarantine for the past month. Living in Québec, we will start to open our store and school next week but as for Canada we are still in quarantine or lockdown. Quebec has had an horrible death toll amongst the older people and because of the quarantine and impossibilities to visit our loved ones many of the older people (75+ year old) have died alone. now it is possible to caregiver to visit and give care to their parents, and if there is a cargiver that is not part of the family but helps the family, it is possible for that person to go and help. We have ask the army to help us. But as of meand m family, we are doing great. we just started to use masks and since the begining we are ask to wash our hand often. Our provincial government have done an amazing job holding daily press conference to update the citizen of the change and repeat their message of safety.
난 한국이 아시아적 공동체의식과 개인주의 사이의 적절한 위치에 있는 것 같음. 과거엔 상당히 순종적으로 받아들여야할 유교적 행동이나 공동체의식이 있었고 '개인주의'란 말이 거의 이기주의와 동급으로 여겨졌었는데 이젠 상당히 변화했음. 대한민국에서 개인주의를 말하는게 예전과는 매우 다른 느낌. 타인에게 피해만 주지 않는다면 내가 뭘 하든 터치받을 이유가 없다는 가치관이 자리잡고 있는 중. 아직까지는 상하수직적인 기업문화가 가로막고 있지만 이것도 예전에 비하면 상당히 개선됐고, 앞으로 10년 정도만 더 지나면 586세대가 현역에서 완전히 물러나면서 사회전반에 걸쳐 수평적 기업문화가 퍼지기 시작할 듯
I came across this channel because I was planning a trip to South Korea and was looking for Korean language channels. Not really helpful for what I wanted, but I like the content, so I stuck around. I was supposed to fly to South Korea today, but my flights were cancelled. Watching this video made me a little depressed that things are going well at the moment in Korea and I'm now stuck in Australia.

공현우 그렇군요. 일본은 자연재해가 많이 일어나서 그럴 수도 있겠네요. 근데 다른 나라 사람들 중 몇 몇은 한국은 전쟁 우려 때문에 사재기 경험이 많았을 것이고, 그게 효과 없는 걸 알아서 이제는 안하는 것일 거라고 평가하더라고요. 인정은 해야겠고 칭찬은 하기싫고 하니 그냥 그렇게 믿고 싶은건지? (마치 한국은 CCTV가 많아서 치안이 좋은 거라고 믿고 싶어하는 사람들처럼) 심지어 한국인들 중 어떤 사람들도 그렇게 말하는 거 보고 의아했었는데, 내 생각엔 확실히 한국은 사재기 문화는 없는 것 같아요. 나도 살면서 단 한번도 해본 적 없고, 내 주변에서 본 적도 없고, 설사있었다하더라도 그렇게 ‘무자비’하진 않았을 거예요. 한국인들의 국민성 자체가. 아무튼 다른 건 모르겠지만, 내가 말한 건, 우리가 지금도 이해 못하는 세계적인? 휴지 사재기 열풍을 말한 것. 휴지 사재기 시초였던 일본은 그런 이유였다고 뉴스에 나왔었는데, 다른 나라도 그런 이유로 하는건지? 왜 하는건지 모르겠다고. 초반에 휴지 사재기할 땐, 돌도 사재기하고 그랬잖아요. 일본에선. 특정 돌이 코로나 예방에 좋다느니 어쩐다느니 하면서... 참 이해할 수 없는.
yeah i'm american and the only reason i knew about this virus early on was because of social media. luckily i live in california and it's being taken relatively seriously here as we've been on lockdown for a few weeks now. i hope more states and countries do the same so this can pass soon.
I’m glad they see the good in humanity. Here in America most people are rude and only looking out for themselves. I’m “essential” so all I get is attitude from customers when we don’t have what they need in our store.

I live in Greece and here is not as bad as in Italy or Spain at the moment, but we are in complete lockdown and only can go out for groceries or drop the garbage for example. And yo do it you have to have a paper indicating the reason and the hours you going to be outside your house. There haven't been panic shopping, thankfully. And in the island I live there haven been any cases yet. Still I think Korea sounds like paradise to me, and it gave me much more respect for the country than I already had. I hope one day I will be able to visit, cause every day I fall more deeply in love with South Korea.
I dunno...Korean living in the U.S and I did not buy toilet paper. only normal amount. We didn't really stock up on anything either. The groceries are still open and still lots of food....idk why ppl are freaking out but then going out to beaches and places where there are alot of people.
I've been studying abroad in Germany (6.5 months now), but my program got cancelled because of the virus. Now I have to return to Florida.... it's worse in FL than it is where I am at in Germany. I don't see how I will be safer in FL than where I am lol.
I took a visit to South Korea in december 2018 to visit my parents. My Dad works for samsung so my parents were over there for a 1 year project of some kind. I've also been a long time kpop and kdrama junkie. I love Korea. Everything is just smarter and more convenient. Being from America, the whole "everything is bigger in America" is so true, even when it's just wasting useful space on things that could have been made more effective. Also healthcare sucks, haha. Today is may 3 and it's the first day my city has lifted our quarentine, we started isolation march 12th and mandatory quarentine started march 25th. I wish I lived somewhere that was better prepared for such situations and that didnt panic buy. I think part of it is that America values ownership, the more you own the better off you presumeably are, so people overpurchase out of fear and selfishness.

I can understand if one lives in a big city, one has to be very careful. I live in a farming area, were good, the only time I wear masks are to grocery stores or shopping for supplies.

I'm American. I've never been to Korea but after seeing Korea's reaction and how things have been handled here, I wish I was in Korea right now. I'd feel a lot safer. Too many people here took too long to take this seriously. Now that people have been taking it a little more serious (though there are plenty that still don't), we have somewhat slowed the virus down, people are trying to use that as evidence that we've overreacted, even though we haven't hit peak yet. I'm worried people will push to "go back to business as usual" and prolong our need to isolate. (I'm currently on my 3rd week of isolation/layoff from my job) I love seeing Korea's sense of community and working together to defeat this virus.
Agreed i am also american and we are opening things up even with cases going up. I feel less safe then when things are closed.

From a mom in South Africa with a daughter in Seoul- I’m just thankful that she’s there and not here. We have an incredibly vulnerable population so like New York (in terms of numbers) if it hits a township it could be catastrophic. Stay safe and pray for those back home.

individualism이랑 collectivism을 정도의 차이로 구분하는거 보면 서양사람들입장에서 우리가 collectivism적인 성격이 더 강하다고 볼순 있을꺼같아요. 번역해서 들으면 먼가 집단주의라는게 부정적으로 들리는게 있는거 같아요. 하지만 개인적가치와 집단적가치의 우선순위를 두는 정도로 봤을때, 한국에서 여기는 집단적 가치가 서양사람들보다 큰 건 맞으니까요.
집단주의로 치부하고 싶겠죠. 유럽이 락다운으로 집단 격리당한 지금 어디가 과연 자유를 침해당했을까요.

어제 오늘은 마스크 안쓰고 다니는 사람들도 종종 보입니다. 홍대같은 경우 젊은이들에게 코로나는 남의 나라 일이라고 생각될 정도로 붐비더군요. 부모 형제들에게 옮길수 있다는걸 왜 모르는 걸까요. 2천만이 넘는 수도권이 뚫리면 정말 상상도 하기 싫습니다. 지금도 환자와 코로나와 씨름하는 의료진과 질본 분들의 노고를 봐서라도, 개학을 못하고 있는 우리 어린 학생들을 위해서라도 사회적 거리두기 제발 좀 지키자구요.

Can you guess what panelist I am dad of? So, update from our "neck of the woods" (a phrase meaning "local community") here in Colorado. Two days ago our State government issued a stay-at-home order, meaning don't go anywhere you do not need to go, but if it is necessary (food, medical issues or supplies, and work at essential businesses) then you can go: this condition lasts until April 11th. You can also walk or go for a run outside or go to the parks as long as you keep a 6' distance between you and all others except family members who live in your house - you can be close to one another which is good since my wife and I would not have it any other way. Maybe 5% of people here are wearing masks to shop in, maybe less. Most here would think it stupid to blame or suspect Asians just because they wear masks (some do all the time), but the first thought when seeing anyone is, "Are they sick?" By now most realize they are not. And of course we can't afford to support you in Korea, son, but could obviously take care of you here. Just saying. :-) We did not go out and clear the shelves of toilet paper. We did get low, but some came in recently and were able to get another pack. The chicken and beef have been bare but we have some now, eggs limited but sufficient, canned good gone - but no one is hungry. We hardly use canned goods anyway. I did observe a lady taking all of the available peanut butter from a display, like 30 or more jars; otherwise, it seems like people go to the stores to avoid being alone, taking their time to shop and exercise their right to grumble. Like me! By the way, about half of all cases of infections in the US are in New York city and nearby; about a 15 mile radius. Our son who lives there is fine so far.

National direction by the President is extended now to April 30th. Our State is likely to make that enforceable. It is up to each State to decide. People know the loopholes (the way around staying inside) and are taking advantage because they are sick of staying at home; nonetheless, everyone keeps their distance and the stores are settling down to less shoppers and more product available, the exceptions still being bath paper (toilet paper) and disinfectants.

Some kids ignore the warnings and play outside but that is expected. There are so many good people in America and the system is the best. People know how to solve a hard problem. It’s my senior year of high school at the moment in America. A lot of things I had planned like prom, the BTS world tour concert, graduation, final tests, college orientation are either cancelled or completely changed. I was also supposed to take a trip to Italy. I’m really worried because the US hasn’t even reached the worst it’s probably going to get but everyone’s just dealing with it in their own way.

쿠팡에 대해 오해 하시는 분이 계시셔서 하나 말씀 드리자면 쿠팡이 매진되서 주문할려면 며칠 걸렸다 아니면 주문해도 며칠후에 받았다라고 하는데 일일 소화할수 있는 물량이 정해져 있어서 그 물량을 초과하면 다음날로 넘어가거나 매진이라는 말이 떴다고 합니다.물량이 없는게 아니라 그걸 소화할수 있는 인력이 없다고 하는게 맞는겁니다. 보통 하루에 소화하는 물량이 1이라고 하고 최대치가 2라고 했을때 이번 코로나사태로 하루에 4~5를 주문해서 허용범위가 넘어간겁니다.다들 집에만 있을려고 해서....평소에 인터넷주문을 안하던 사람까지 몰려서 더 심했다고 합니다.
한국에서 살고 있으면 한국어를 어느정도 습득해야하는거 아닌지.
특히 이런 비상시국에는 더더욱.
티비에서 자막으로 영어안내를 계속내보내던데요.
한국정부는 충분히 할만큼 하고 있음.
시시각각 변화하는 긴급상황에서 메시지를 전부 영어번역해서 보내는것은 지금 시국에 가능하지않을듯.

Kylie 카일리 we could be doing better, here’s an example. scott morrison (our prime minister) was going to decide to shut down schools in new south wales (where i live), but then decided for schools to still be open, but attendance is optional, which i think is absolutely poorly worded. because of statements like this, we have become confused on what we should do because we’re getting mixed messages from our government
It's an unusual situation everywhere, but I think the Australian response has been pretty good. If you look at the WHO stats, OZ and NZ are right on the heels of South Korea in getting good results and miles ahead of other places, especially Europe. Some of it was luck, some of it acting reasonably early, some of it is good management, and some of it are 'we need to learn a lot from this'
I think Australians do sometimes get confused about the relationship between the Feds and States. They seem to expect the PM (no matter who he/she is) to do things that actually belong at State level and that The Feds simply have no legal authority to do. That might sometimes explain the 'why isn't theye being clearer about some things' (e.g the schools are run by the states); it's because they can't be; the Constitution doesn't allow it. With a lot of stuff he can suggest and encourage, but it's the job of the States to actually do it.
코로나 사태의 발발과 함께 다시 국민성이나 공동체의식에 대한 문제제기가 시작된 것 같아요. 어려움이 있을수록 뭉치는 한국국민의 모습을 다시금 확인할 수 있었던 계기라고 봅니다. 이게 한국이 빠르게 발전할 수 있었던 원동력이라고 생각하구요. 물론 단점도 있지만, 빠른 인터넷과 디지털기기의 높은 보급률, 높은 교육수준(및 literacy)를 기반으로 정보 확산이 빠르고, 오픈된 공론장에서 훨씬 적극적으로 의견을 개진하기 때문에 힘을 얻게 되어 역으로 정부에 힘을 발휘하는 경우가 많이 발생하구요. 이를 지속적으로 긍정적이고, 사회를 위한 방향으로 활용할 수 있도록 국민들이 함께 만들어가면 좋겠습니다.

I'm relatively new to your channel and just saw this video. Just to answer a few questions about the U.S. that were brought up in the video:
Toilet paper: Inaccurate information was shared via social media (especially Facebook) that all toilet paper was made in China and because of the outbreak, no other shipments would be coming from China. So shoppers thought that the stock in stores was all that was available. This led to panic buying. We actually make toilet paper in the U.S., so some of the manufacturers started advertising campaigns to reassure people.
Masks: Initially, the experts and government officials actively discouraged wearing masks in the U.S., unless you were sick. The surgeon general even tweeted for people to stop buying masks. Later, the government started suggesting masks be worn, so things are better in that regard.
It's baffling how this might have spread all the way down to Latin America causing people to do the same. I couldn't understand why. Thanks for clarifying this.

요즘 우리나라 유투브 대부분은 국민성이 최고다 에 초점을 맞춘것 같은데 그리 하도록 만들어 준게 제 개인적으론 정부의 몫이 컸다고 생각 하기 때문에 정부가 처음부터 숨김 없이 모든 정보를 다 전달하고 질병관리본부에 전권을 일임 해서 뭐가 필요 하다 하면 최대한 서포터 하는 역활을 하고 전 국민이 침착하게 잘 대응하게 알게 모르게 서포터를 잘한것 같은데 언론들도 다 정부 칭찬 하기 싫으니 국민성만 보도를 하지 외국 언론들도 다 정부의 역활이 크다고 하고 잘했다 칭찬하는데 강경화 장관에 말에 우리 국민들은 정부에 최고의 서비스를 항상 바란다 이말이 있죠 그말에 기반해서 정부가 국민에게 서비스를 정말 잘하고 있는겁니다 우리나라는 다른나라는 그렇치 못한거고

문정부가 잘하고 있으니 총선에 영향이 있을까봐 정부칭찬은 못하겠고 국민들이 잘해서라는 프레임으로 가는거같네요...유럽이나 일본 미국정부를 보면 정부대처가 확연히 다른데도 말이죠
여기 미국에서도 맨날 한국 정부 칭찬하는데 한국 여론은 정부 못 잡아 먹어 안달이죠. 언론이 너무 썩었어요. 자기들 기득권을 유지하려면 특정 정당이 당선되어야 하니 정치 전략만 쓰는 거죠. 정치를 위해서는 기자의 본분이고 뭐고 없죠. 유시민에 대해 뭐라도 꼬투리 잡으려고 검사 이름대며 협박한 채널 에이 기자 사건 보세요. 이게 지금 21세기 대한민국인가 싶어요. 검사들이 무시무시한 권력을 갖고 있으니 기자들은 거기에 빌붙어서 자기네가 검사인 마냥 행세하고...
개인정보 침해는 확진자가 어느정도 감수해야하고 때론 비난 받아야하는 면도 있어요.그래야 다른 사람들이 그런 비난을 피하기 위해서 더 조심하죠.와국인들의 나이브함이 오히려 문제인게,오늘 확진자 중에서 수원의 영국인은 선별 진료소에서 검사 받고도 그냥 마스크도 안쓴채 며칠을 휘젓고 다니며 다른 사람들을 접촉해서 생명을 위태롭게 만들었잖아요.그건 진짜 심각한 범죄에요.국내에 있는 당신같은 분들도 그런 소식을 접한다면 개인의 신상정보를 걱정하기 전에 자각하면서 누군가를 죽일 수도 있단 생각을 하는게 맞죠.지금은 당신들 나라를 포함해서 엄청난 수의 확진자와 사망자가 폭증하는데도 한가롭게 공익과 사익을 논할 때인가요?한국의 개인정보보호법은 다른 주요국가들만큼 엄격하지만,적어도 한국은 이런 전시에 준하는 비상 사태에서 개인의 사적인 무게보다 공적인 부분에 더큰 무게를 두었기때문에 지금의 코로나 방역을 잘하고 있는겁니다.아직도 독일에서는 확진자가 엄청나게 늘어나고 있는데도 개인정보 보호 운운하며 한국식 모델을 반대했다죠?분명 메르켈 총리는 전시 상황이라고했습니다.실제로 전시 상황처럼 엄청난 경제적 피해와 엄청난 인명 피해가 생기고 있고요.단지 총,칼이 없을 뿐인데,만약 진짜 전쟁 상황에서도 사람들이 죽어 나가는데,전략을 위해서 누군가의 사적 재산과 신체를 침해해야하는 상황이 온다면 그때에도 한가롭게 개인정보보호 운운하며 시간을 보내고 있을겁니까?민주주의를 서구에서 먼저 도입했어도 어느 나라에서 그걸 더 잘 적용해서 사회를 건강하게 만들어 나가고 있다면 진지하게 내게 정말 맞는건지 생각하고 받아도 들어야할 줄 아는겁니다.
저도 공감이요 유럽 미국에서는 개인사생활이 더 중요하다고 하는데 다른사람한테 피해주는거보다 개인 자유가 더 중요하다고 주장하는거죠. 전 다른 사람한테 피해주는게 개인자유에 해당된다고 생각하지않아요

개인의 사생활 침해라는 관점을 굉장히 강조하는 서구권 나라들이 있다는 걸 알게 되었는데 한국의 행정시스템을 오해한 부분도 많은 게 사실이죠.. 그런데 위 영상을 보다보니 나이와 성별을 굳이 밝히냐는 지적은 맞다는 생각이 들기도 합니다. 하지만 나이대와 성별을 밝히지 않으면 동시간대의 주변 사람들이 모를 수 있기에 밝혀야만 하는 정보일 수 밖에 없다고 생각되네요.

Korea had the pollution even during the nuclear power plant era. The only difference now is the corona problem which stopped the factories in China. On top of that three years of Moon and his preference of coal over nuclear and STILL we have clear blue skies during this year February and March, unprecedented in decades. 한국에 살고있고 공용어가 한국어인 나라에서 재난시에 다른 나라 언어로 정보를 제공받기 바라는 건 좀 말이 안되지 않나 싶어요~~~
전 이상한 질문은 아닌 것 같아요. 외국어로 대응을 해준다는 건 그만큼 글로벌 화 되어있냐는 거고, 이를 인식하고 있기 때문에 공공장소(지하철, 버스)에서는 코로나 관련 안내방송이 한국어+영어로 같이 나옵니다. 중국어 일어는 스킵한 것 같지만요. 문제 생기자마자 방송을 영어로 녹음해서 한국어랑 같이 송출하기 시작했고, 이것도 굉장히 빠른 대응이라고 생각합니다.
보통 저는 그렇게 생각합니다. 어떤 나라에 산다면 그들은 그들의 언어가 제공되기를 기대하지 말아야 해요 (근데 한 나라가 그렇게 한다면 좋겠지만). 그레도 코로나을 예방하기를 싶으면 모든 사람에게 정보를 빨리 전달하는 것이 좋습니다. 많은 언어를 제공하는 것은 나라들이 더 안전해지도록 돕습니다.

한국어로 된 안내문자도 시도때도없이 받는데 영어로 전국민에게 한번더 송출한다는건 엄청난 낭비죠.
재난방송은 한가한 방송이 아닙니다. 최대한 공무원들이 상황을 접수하고 신속하게 사실을 내보내는 긴급메세지에 그런걸 바란다는거 너무한거 아닌가요? 지금 공무원들 휴일 재대로 못쉬고 계속 비상체제입니다.

As for our situation, the Government didn’t take the measures soon enough - although sooner than other countries I might say.

반대로 생각해서 영미권에서 정부공지를 타국언어로 해줄까요..sns가 활발하고 번역툴도 많은 요즘 마음만 먹으면 해석가능하죠. 외국에 와서 해당 국가의 자국어로만 재난문자보낸다고 불만이라면 그게 문제라고 봅니다. 한국정부는 만인의 콜센터가 아니잖아요.

collectivism: the practice or principle of giving a group priority over each individual in it (the definition from google dictionary). 개인적인 생각은 집단주의로 한단어로 번역되면 느낌이 부정적으로 들리는데 영어상으론 우리나라 문맥처럼 그렇게 강한 느낌이 아닌거 같아요. 우리나라가 여기는 집단의 가치들이 서양사람들이 여기는 것보다 더 높은건 공감되니까요.

집단주의와 공동체 주의는 동전의 양면이라고 봅니다. 전체를 위해 개인을 억압하는 것을 당연히 여긴다면 집단주의고, 전체와 개인의 이익형량을 균형있게 조절 할 수 있다면 공동체주의죠.
그리고, 대한민국은 집단주의적 성향과 공동체주의적 성향이 모두 있습니다. 평상시에는 공동체주의보다는 집단주의 성향이 강하게 나타나는 편이 많다고 봅니다. 때문에, 많은 부분에서 앞으로 나가가는데 벽을 만들죠. 하지만, 위기상황에서는 집단주의 보다는 공동체 주의로서의 장점이 더 강하게 발휘 된 것이라고 봅니다. 물론, 서구 사회은 정반대로 간것이구요..
때문에, 한국 사회나 서구 사회 모두 공동체 주의를 발전시킬 수 있도록 노력을 해야 한다고 봅니다. 한국 사회는 개인에게 가해지는 억압을 해소하는 방향으로, 서구사회는 공동체를 위해 개인을 자제 할 수 있는 방향으로 교육이 이뤄졌으면 하네요.
이런 사태는 모두가 연대하지 않으면 절대 해결 할 수 없으니까요.
참.. 중국과 같은 경우.. 혹은 독재국가들은.. 집단주의라기 보다는 이보다더 더 가혹하게 통제가 가해지는 전체주의라고 봅니다.

I think Korea wore masks b4 the virus because it is a small country and its pretty dense with population. In the US, we did not wear masks at all b4 covid, we have big open areas. I live in a rural area, I wear no mask at all, only in grocery stores or if im shopping for supplies.
Well it's easy to be cool calm and collected when your government heeds the warnings and starts testing immediately. Unfortunately some government didn't heed the warnings and people have died . The reality in Korea is different from the reality that a lot of people are living. I have heard of families losing more than one member and in one case the whole family died. In my own family we've had distant members infected with the virus and one unfortunate death. So people are just scared, were dealing with something that we never dealt with before.

The not wearing a mask 😷 is such an interesting topic at the moment in Korea. I’m living and working in Gyeongsangnamdo. I was on a bus to work the other day, one Korean lady wasn’t wearing a mask and an adjumoni spoke to her saying she should be wearing a mask. But then on the other hand you see many younger people not wearing masks. I’ll continue to wear masks until I’ve been told so.

As a coronavirus a month ago, I was really desperate day by day when I heard on the news....but I really appreciate most people have been wearing a mask,keeping social distance. Really ....until now I really appreciate many people help Daegu overcome this situation....especially I was surprised first day....i saw many doctors,nurse,volunteers came here the more than I thought....we have to wear several protective equipments and a mask so I can't know their face while working, but this week I saw their face after taking off their masks for the first time and eating a lunch box .

I studied abroad in Korea last year and honestly I miss being there more then ever now. Being someone in the United States right now during this sucks. We have no real leadership and people are not listening or protesting the stay at home order. No one wears a mask here and gave me crap for wearing a mask as soon as we had officially confirmed cases in my state. Also the it’s all about me culture here is really showing and it is really starting to get to me. I really wish people would just stay home when told to so we can protect the people who are in danger of this virus the most. I honestly would give anything to move back to Korea right now. 😔

I live in Perth, Australia and I have been wearing masks this week, but I only have surgical masks because I can't find any N95. I ordered N95 online but they didn't arrive. A handful of people at the supermarket wear a mask now. Probably half of the the people with masks are Asian. Sometimes the pharmacy get masks in stock but it's rare and they sell out straight away. I've seen an old man whinging about people wearing masks at the supermarket, and young people laughing at a woman who had a mask and gloves on. People in western countries have fallen for the "masks don't help" lies that have been spread around.
It’s quite interesting though because usually there is a big individualist outlook in the western world/here in the UK, but with the outbreak and the mass self isolation has come a big push for community, looking out for your neighbour. The major outlook is if you’re not isolating for yourself, do it for the older population. Watching the news it’s nice almost seeing people come together to help each other out
Agree with everything you guys said. I'm from Australia but have been in Korea for 7 months now and I am so glad that I'm in Korea instead of Australia right now. The situation here has been handled so so much better and it seems to be on the slow. I feel very safe and lucky to be in Korea right now. But I am sad and worried about my friends and family in Australia, as a lot of people really aren't taking it seriously. Our government is incompetent too.

Here in Canada we are in quarantine for the past month. Living in Québec, we will start to open our store and school next week but as for Canada we are still in quarantine or lockdown. Quebec has had an horrible death toll amongst the older people and because of the quarantine and impossibilities to visit our loved ones many of the older people (75+ year old) have died alone. now it is possible to caregiver to visit and give care to their parents, and if there is a cargiver that is not part of the family but helps the family, it is possible for that person to go and help. We have ask the army to help us. But as of meand m family, we are doing great. we just started to use masks and since the begining we are ask to wash our hand often. Our provincial government have done an amazing job holding daily press conference to update the citizen of the change and repeat their message of safety.

난 한국이 아시아적 공동체의식과 개인주의 사이의 적절한 위치에 있는 것 같음. 과거엔 상당히 순종적으로 받아들여야할 유교적 행동이나 공동체의식이 있었고 '개인주의'란 말이 거의 이기주의와 동급으로 여겨졌었는데 이젠 상당히 변화했음. 대한민국에서 개인주의를 말하는게 예전과는 매우 다른 느낌. 타인에게 피해만 주지 않는다면 내가 뭘 하든 터치받을 이유가 없다는 가치관이 자리잡고 있는 중. 아직까지는 상하수직적인 기업문화가 가로막고 있지만 이것도 예전에 비하면 상당히 개선됐고, 앞으로 10년 정도만 더 지나면 586세대가 현역에서 완전히 물러나면서 사회전반에 걸쳐 수평적 기업문화가 퍼지기 시작할 듯
I came across this channel because I was planning a trip to South Korea and was looking for Korean language channels. Not really helpful for what I wanted, but I like the content, so I stuck around. I was supposed to fly to South Korea today, but my flights were cancelled. Watching this video made me a little depressed that things are going well at the moment in Korea and I'm now stuck in Australia.

일본이 사재기 하고부터 다른 나라들도 휴지 사재기 시작했음. 일본은 중국이 재료를 공급하지 못하면 휴지 생산이 어렵다는 루머 때문이었다고 하던데. 그렇게 알고 있는데. 아무튼 다른 나라들도 그 부분과 같은 맥락인지? 아직도 이유를 모르겠음.
동일본 대지진때도 일본 약탈하고 난리도 아녔어요~ 이번일뿐이 아닙니다. 그때 일본 미디어는 사실을 숨기고 미화해서 일본 시민의식이 좋다 하면서 포장했죠~ 개난리도 아녔음....

yeah i'm american and the only reason i knew about this virus early on was because of social media. luckily i live in california and it's being taken relatively seriously here as we've been on lockdown for a few weeks now. i hope more states and countries do the same so this can pass soon.
I’m glad they see the good in humanity. Here in America most people are rude and only looking out for themselves. I’m “essential” so all I get is attitude from customers when we don’t have what they need in our store.

I live in Greece and here is not as bad as in Italy or Spain at the moment, but we are in complete lockdown and only can go out for groceries or drop the garbage for example. And yo do it you have to have a paper indicating the reason and the hours you going to be outside your house. There haven't been panic shopping, thankfully. And in the island I live there haven been any cases yet.
Still I think Korea sounds like paradise to me, and it gave me much more respect for the country than I already had.
I hope one day I will be able to visit, cause every day I fall more deeply in love with South Korea.

I dunno...Korean living in the U.S and I did not buy toilet paper. only normal amount. We didn't really stock up on anything either. The groceries are still open and still lots of food....idk why ppl are freaking out but then going out to beaches and places where there are alot of people.

I've been studying abroad in Germany (6.5 months now), but my program got cancelled because of the virus. Now I have to return to Florida.... it's worse in FL than it is where I am at in Germany. I don't see how I will be safer in FL than where I am lol.

I took a visit to South Korea in december 2018 to visit my parents. My Dad works for samsung so my parents were over there for a 1 year project of some kind. I've also been a long time kpop and kdrama junkie. I love Korea. Everything is just smarter and more convenient. Being from America, the whole "everything is bigger in America" is so true, even when it's just wasting useful space on things that could have been made more effective. Also healthcare sucks, haha.
Today is may 3 and it's the first day my city has lifted our quarentine, we started isolation march 12th and mandatory quarentine started march 25th. I wish I lived somewhere that was better prepared for such situations and that didnt panic buy. I think part of it is that America values ownership, the more you own the better off you presumeably are, so people overpurchase out of fear and selfishness.
