Problems with that: 1) People have real jobs and aren't available. 2) When a voluntary member gets badly injured attempting to arrest someone, who pays for their hospital bill, aftercare expenses, lost work income, or lingering disability? 3) Some voluntary citizens may have criminal convictions and either have lost their right to be armed, or have sustained a loss to reputation. This may be a problem both when effecting an arrest and if they have to testify in court against the criminal apprehended by the volunteers.

The average response time for State troopers, Sheriffs, EMS, and Fire is over an hour where I live. It is on a peninsula with a 10 mile single lane no shoulder driveway 30 minute winding drive with drop offs. The closest town is 30 minutes away 15 miles from the beginning of the driveway. We don’t have any problem with each other we understand in our subdivision retreat no one is getting anywhere fast. It is peaceful actually on the lake/river coastline.

This isn't an isolated case. There are thousands of small towns in the USA with no dedicated police, that have to rely on the county sheriff or state police for law enforcement. Long response times and marginal service are the norm.

As a kid I dreamed of living in Oregon as an adult after watching the movie Stand By Me. As an adult I drove all throughout Oregon one summer and said- fuck that!! It is beautiful, but there's nothing really there for me to feel safe. Salem and Eugene are terrible, in Bend they're all snobby. Many small cities in Oregon have been without police. It’s just the way it is here. Everyone in Oregon has a gun, a big knife, or a very trusting demeanor. Some cities only have an officer one day a week. In some areas this does mean more crime. In other areas this means less extortion from the state, county or city. These cities without police are experiencing true anarchy. Even today in Medford, Oregon the police force has been cut drastically and yet it seems so peaceful here now. Either the criminals haven’t realized how much reign they have, or they just don’t care because they’ve always felt this reign.

I grew up in curry county and yes 5 years ago there was 1 state trooper there was also a fully staffed sherrifs office with about 10 deputies and 4 gold beach police 10 or so Brookings police and 2 port orford police and the populations are so small that there isn't really a problem with those low numbers were talking like 3000 people in the county seat of gold beach

Up here the money they do get is a fraction of a fraction of royalties the government gets from the big corporations that have mines on there traditional land. It goes to help pay for schools and grocery stores, it’s not what you think. As a white guy who’s worked on the reserve many times, I can say they’re some of the nicest people I’ve ever met.

I live in New York City where it is very hard to get a carrier's license unless you have a job which requires you to carry loads of cash so must gun owners only keep one at home but they should legalize tear gas and stun guns here because pepper spray does not always work and is useless on multiple attackers.

This isn't an isolated case. There are thousands of small towns in the USA with no dedicated police, that have to rely on the county sheriff or state police for law enforcement. Long response times and marginal service are the norm.

The elderlies and the children. You can’t expect to send your 8yr old child to school with a gun to defend themselves. I used to live in Siletz and it was a crap town even back then full of druggies and abuse. I was trapped in a bad marriage where my ex-husband and his psycho Mother planned to take me up into the woods to their spring and kill me. Thank God that the police showed up and got me out of that situation before they did do anything. Siletz will always be a crap town.
There's a bit of small towns along the coast that have no police departments. Mine only has a tiny fire depo. One cop strolls through sometimes, maybe once or twice a month.

That mayor should think himself that I'm not a resident in that town because I'll be raising a whole lot of hell and I would be seen to his removal from office not to mention the Town Council from office for gross incompetence to put the residence life in jeopardy. I will be seeking the support of all residents in that town to remove the Town Council as well as the mayor from Office showing no confidence in their ability to look into the best interest of the resident I will get the county involved and estate involved. Then I would call on the governor to have state troopers over there until we can form a new police department to service the residents of that town. As a kid I dreamed of living in Oregon as an adult after watching the movie Stand By Me. As an adult I drove all throughout Oregon one summer and said- fuck that!! It is beautiful, but there's nothing really there for me to feel safe. Salem and Eugene are terrible, in Bend they're all snobby. Portland, well, you know, it's just chaos, and the rest of Oregon just has a depressing feel. Especially east Oregon. Anyway, I wish all Oregonians the best. God bless them!

This is a nationwide example as to why police are crucial in society and nobody should take what communities want away without the community being in charge of voting it through.
Many small cities in Oregon have been without police. It’s just the way it is here. Everyone in Oregon has a gun, a big knife, or a very trusting demeanor. Some cities only have an officer one day a week. In some areas this does mean more crime. In other areas this means less extortion from the state, county or city. These cities without police are experiencing true anarchy. Even today in Medford, Oregon the police force has been cut drastically and yet it seems so peaceful here now. Either the criminals haven’t realized how much reign they have, or they just don’t care because they’ve always felt this reign.

This is how cutting the police budgets will affect large cities. This also makes me wonder how much of the budget that would have gone to fund the police, went to fund payment to the city council who probably had salaries that were to high for the budget.
We don't have a police department in my small town of Mongo, IN but everyone owns guns. Crime rate is almost non existent. Most of the crime is mainly due to the lakers we get from the summer.

So what? I grew up in a small town with no police. The nearest police was a minimum of 20 minutes away and if they were in the north part of that town it would be 25-30. And we lived just fine.
