This Austin Mini Is Part Of A Coming Of Age Story That Honors The Past

  • Each week with every film we produce we’re going to aim to give you a bit of a gallery from behind the scenes. This week we take a ride in Maxime Delestre’s 1975 Austin Mini through the rural back roads just outside of Normandie.
The grandson of a Peugeot salesman and son of a rally co-driver, Maxime grew up within a passionate petrolhead family. After watching his father compete in rallies for years, at the age of 17 Maxime earned his own rally co-driver permit, following in his father’s flame suit and helmet-toting footsteps.
At 18, Maxime secured his driver’s license-a possession we so easily forget we petrolheads all once craved to attain. Immediately, he made way for the twisting-and-turning roads so ideal for the spirited driving he wished to explore. There was just one problem: Max felt modern cars weren’t delivering the experience he so desired.
“Something was missing. It lacked noise, it lacked vibration, and it didn't smell of anything.” Naturally, Maxime realized only an analog machine from the past could fulfill his driving needs. Being an 18-year-old student posed a financial limitation, but as we know a small car fund can buy small car fun-a classic Mini was the obvious choice.
After a short stint with a deteriorating 1992 Mini Sprite, Maxime was able to source a stunning bronze 1975 Austin Mini he’s still revving out-and-about today. Finally satisfied with the Mini, Max confesses there were some growing pains involved with the coming of age.
With cars and competition always on the mind, Maxime admits it was often a distraction. “In school, I spent more time drawing in my books than studying, the teachers hated me for it.” Instead of making his enthusiasm for machines and doodling a complication, Maxime decided to turn it into a career by studying automotive design.
“The nice thing is that I can use many different aspects-the past with vintage cars such as the Mini, the present with racing cars and fun fast driving, and try and incorporate all [of] this in the future,” Maxime explains.
With the right car, mentality, and career path underway, Maxime Delestre is hope there will continue to be fun motoring for generations to come.

Whenever I see a classic Mini like this it always makes me think of my childhood in the late 60's, early 70's. During that time my Dad always had them, in fact he had 17 Mini's altogether but one always stood out and to this day I can remember it's reg. number. It was 786 FON. It was a really old one, I know that. The starter was a rubber button next to the handbrake and it had a smaller rubber button on the floor to dip and raise the headlights, you never see that anymore do you, lol!!
It's good to see young people like Maxime enjoying what I would call 'Real Cars', when todays cars are so plasticky and numb, and I include my own Nissan in that list.
Keep the faith Maxime and enjoy it while the powers that be allow it. Peace x

Those were the days, felt like they would never end. Bought my first a 1959 Mini Austin Seven during the last days of High School in 1968 & spent the summer fixing it up. Passed my driving test in 1980, bought a ‘63 Mini Cooper in Almond Green/Old English White. For extra pin money I would buy Mini MOT rust failures, cut out the rust, repair and repaint as necessary & sell them on, use the profit to buy another. Moved over to Hot Rods & Street Rods in the early 1980’. Following a upper spinal injury I found myself back in New MINIS & enjoyed them right up to the present. Finally buying a 2015 Porsche 981 Cayman. Have never lost the appreciation for the iconic Minis & their humble beginnings. Glad to see them still being enjoyed. Like the colour, looks like Reynard / Fox metallic. The adventure lives on 👍🏻.

I love small classics. I'm 18 now and, my 1966 Beetle is my first car which me and my dad got long before I could drive and have gradually cleaned it up. I learnt how drive in it back when it couldn't idle, heel-toe and no mirrors. Now it looks incredible and runs like a dream. Working on it has taught me so much about how cars run and how to keep them running. Easily inspired by my Dads nostalgia we also have a 64 Morris mini van which is our delivery vehicle for our print and graphics shop we run together. Young people with classic cars is a great combination.

lovely video, nice car, Mine is a real Mk1 , January 1962. I bought it around 1967. It has been a good servant. For over 30 years it was fitted with a 1098 cc engine, 12G295 head, AEE630 cam, 1 1/2" SU, 3.44 final derive ratio. This was a fast tractable, reliable and economical road engine. It would easily pull just over 6000 RPM in top gear. In more recent years a 1275 engine was fitted, although nippy, I liked the 1100 engine more.

Nice, very nice restored Mini, would have liked to hear more about the specs tough. The badge on the back says Speedwell, if this car has a such an engine it would have been worth mentioning.
If it is a 1975 car then the backlights and the front grill are not original but again; really nice to see such a beautifull Mini.
And the tale regarding changing the fuelpump; nice story but have you ever tried to do that at the side of the road?! Bleeding knuckles guaranteed....
