Hi @DailyTekk, i really love your video's, but this one seems all over the place? There must have been something wrong with the editing process. Just wanted to mention that, i believe that good critique will bring you much further than to be negative. Anyway, i'm personally very overthinking all of this. I want to buy the Mac Pro, but i don't know if it's worth spending so much money when there will be new Apple computers with a very different processor.

“Support for years” could mean anything. Maybe not able to get the new MacOS after only a couple years. Support could mean being able to service the devices in an Apple Store for up to 7 years, and then provide other AppleCare support. This may not mean the most up to date software. Maybe would add additional point updates for security after the initial first couple years or so. Just guessing.

I wouldn't buy a new design until about gen 2 or after - look how long it took them to get the current line of MBPs straightened out. I would say buy now if you need it now. Last time I was in for an update for my 2013 MBP and 2016 desktop, I decided that I can work with those still and went for a month long trip with the missus to Japan. Now a year later I decided to upgrade my peripherals instead, custom keyboards for us and much better displays. I guess next year it is desktop time. Depending on how well Apple will release its new MBPs. Would be preferable to do all computing on laptop instead of 60-70%.
But we’re currently in middle of big generational standard shift. Last gen standards aren’t bad, but I like to be with the next long term solutions. It feels like USB4, WiFi 6, PCIE 5.0/4.0 and DDR5 will be those long term solutions since they come should up at the same 2 year period and will be the industry standard for the next 5-7 years.

While the new macbooks will be much more powerful and maybe offer touch/pencil support I cannot imagine them selling those for anything less than a significant premium over what current macbook pro's go for. I mean 1k more for the 16inch. It only makes sense if those are going to blow all other computers out of the water, and it wont piss of there current user base as much because the value of there makebook pros on the 2ndary market will still have value for those unwilling/able to buy the macbooks with the new chips. I still think this is 3 years away from broad support, bugs/kinks worked out for the silicon and I dont think worrying about any of this is worth the energy right now, especially sense they have more intel based backs yet to be released..

I work in a bank and we have 100s of financial applications which are programmed to run on Intel machines. There may be some time for all programs to be able to catch up to ARM based processors. So I would suggest to go for Intel machines now and go for ARM based machines in may be 3 years when things will be a bit mature. Well there are perks also to be an early adopter like getting hold of all iOS based apps straight away on Mac, if that matters to you.

My issue with Macs is thermals. So I'm using a 2014 MBP 15 and a 2015 MBP 15 and a Windows desktop. I would like a 16 or 17 inch MacBook Pro Apple Silicon, as long as it can run my trading programs and the iCloud Suite (which I'm sure will be available). So I'm waiting for AS. I can use my old MacBook Pros if I have anything Intel-specific.

Simply depends on user. If you use your mac to game and bootcamp into windows, jump at this. If you are a developer - jump at this. If you are a video editor wait. When ARM comes out it will essentially break the latter pretty much straight away at least until the vendors prioritise in their backlogs interop for the ARM architecture. Given that Microsoft is in direct competition with Apple and Intel have been cut off from Apple I do not forsea much by way of support or prioritisation to interop with ARM tbh. I think you would be cutting yourself off. My plan is to purchase the mid-range 27" iMac with the 512 GB storage etc with the intel chip. Allow everyone to jump at the new ARM chips. I am telling you now, professionals i.e developers (which I thought were the user base for Apple...) will suffer the most.

@@r.j.macready5410 I would go 2014 or 2015 Retina MacBook Pro. In fact I have 2014 and 2015 MacBook Pros and they have both been workhorses. I have two as I bought the 2014 new and bought the 2015 used two years ago as a backup. The problem is that the pandemic has used MacBooks in very short supply now. If you're using an older model for professional work, then you need to have a backup as older equipment can die at any time. My 2008 MacBook Pro lost the screen in 2018 - I think that ten years of use is really great but I think that anything over five years old could go at any time.

Ready to upgrade, but I'm 100% apple silicon. Early adopting quick. All prices similar, I'm completely down for the first gen Apple Silicon, purely for productivity because the line in the sand will be firmly drawn against gaming and Windows. I'll be happy to have a machine for just work that isn't gimped like a Chromebook. Next gen consoles are on the horizon, the Switch is a great portable choice, and my 3 year old gaming PC will be fine for a while. My Macbook Pro doesn't have to compete against Windows anymore. It can exist in its own space and live for my own needs.

This is obviously something Apple wants, being their philosophy, so it is no surprise. Still wish you guys could confirm this, because if it wasn’t something I did something wrong, then here is a HUGE reason to get an Intel based Mac while you still can...

Gave my 2012 MBP to my 10 year old so she could school from home. And just bought the 2020 $1800 MBP last week...and I am so torn if I should return it. I have a week left to decide. I'm pursuing a masters of science in acupunture so I need a computer and my kids need a computer, but I think I could share with them for a year until the new MBP comes out. My husband insists I keep this 2020 intel based MBP, but I'm wanting the Silicon. I started with the Apple II (6800 chip and tape deck), and since bought PC's and Apple products. I've just upgraded my 2015 (last decent machine) for a sixteen inch with i9, 64Gb mem, 8Gb gpu with 1Tb storage. My reasoning is the power update it took four or five years to iron out the kinks, by that time I will need a new unit anyway (if I'm still breathing) and Apple silicon will be up and running. Learn by history otherwise you will repeat the same mistakes, lucky through the first I didn't make any, but that still doesn't mean you shouldn't use historical data. If you have critical programs running through Intel or secondary OS's buy now and let the dust settle and make a informed decision then, this is not kicking the can it is acting to your best circumstances now and futuristically with data now.

Wauw! You just nailed all my worries and pros and cons. Having an old fully spec'd 2014 iMac 5K and neeeeed something portable soon. Just had to buy a suitcase to transport it :o But...when do you think we'll expect to see the first Silicon-powered Mac this year? November? December? And what about that iPad Pro? I'm primarily into podcasts (Hindenburg) and video (FCPX) and some photoshop/illustrator. Haven't owned an iPad since the first mini. Isn't the jump too massive for now? I mean...how do I even get a clip into that thing and work from an external SSD drive?

Thanks Chris. Great video, as you always do - one of the best Apple reviewers around!
This has put me in a bit of a quandary - I’m still on a 15” 2014 MBP. When I got it, I upsized everything to the max and it still runs nicely. my plan was to replace it with the new 14” MBP this year but the rumour of that never eventuated so thought I’d wait a little longer. Now, I may go for the first gen silicon MBP’s when they are released, leaving me not in the sweet-spot that you are in.
Lots to think about - nice problem to have though. Thanks for the great vid.

I think the main reason why apple is switching to ARM is the heat Issue & not the CPU power. The fan noisees and the heatIssue is just annoying on the current macbooks. ipads are silent, powerful & no heat issues...

It's possible that if there is a feature that is REMOVED that people will greatly miss or need then there could actually be a good demand for pre-Apple chip units as well. Just speculation. Honestly, I never really sell any of my devices. I use stuff long enough (even when it isn't my primary machine) that the value I would get for it never exceeds my nostalgia for it and eventually it either becomes unusable and discarded or museum'd into a storage bin for occasional use.

Honestly, I'm hoping a lawsuit takes place if apple doesn't support their Intel Macs for at least 6 years. People dropped thousands of dollars on a product they didn't see having a major transition chip change so fast. I would highly appreciate if Tim Cook gave a timeframe for how long support will continue! I truly feel cheated! I have a 16 inch MacBook Pro thats heavily specked out and now this.

I was there when Apple transitioned from PowerPC to Intel. Practically same scenario as today. The people who bought PowerPC computers just before the switch to Intel got the short end of the stick...badly. The problem is not Apple...the problem will be the developers which will stop developing for intel based computers. When that happens (it will happen), and if someone just brought an intel based Mac they are going to end up with basically a two year old intel Mac which won't be able to run up to date software natively. I saw the demo and looks like it works "fast" using Rosetta nevertheless as soon as the transition is over no one will assure you that your two year old spanking new intel Mac (bought at full retail price) will be able to perform accordingly. If you trust Apple that intel based Macs will still be supported then you will be fine. My opinion is to wait for the new processors. If you just bought a new intel based one sell it (unless you are ok financially speaking) before the price plummets.

Thanks for making this video, mate. I cannot in good conscience advise anybody to purchase a new Intel Mac from this point onwards. They simply have to wait. • @andrewcrossley2448
      @andrewcrossley2448 4 года назад +1

Dear Mr. Castro, my recommendation would be to keep your MBA, as it is built to an industrial strength and has HDMI, USB and SD etc inbuilt. Many UK BBC field reporters and journalists are still using their MBAs every day and they must hammer them. Get a new battery if needed.
Your iPad Pro 2020 is a superb lightweight tool for most uni work. With a pencil and notability etc will do 90+ % of your note taking and daily needs, even if you study engineering. Write your notes rather than type them, as they’re easier to recall at exam times.
If you cannot resist it, I suggest that you don’t buy a new MBP until you get your full university email account, as most universities have routes to get major discounts - way more than you’d get from the Apple shop - 20% typically and 4 yr warranty for free.
A much better investment is a pair of great 24 to 27 inch monitor from Dell or possibly Lenovo - possibility second hand. Get height adjustable monitors with non reflective surfaces and possibly IPS. For example, I have a pair of brilliant Dell P2715Qs with HDMI, DisplayPort and Mini DisplayPort . These work with my 2015 13 in MBP (great quality and durability), a Microsoft SurfacePro 6 with a pen and docking station, for creating lectures and drawing based ideas, ( your IPad can do similar work) and a 5 year old Lenovo desktop i5 with 20gb of Ram and a new SSD for storage of research writing etc all backed up to OneDrive - critical .
All this kit is durable and gets used 10+ hrs a day, for my sins. The next essential is a great keyboard and mouse. Look at the top Logitech or Microsoft ones for typing a lot on. Apple are ok and have shortcuts, but the newer Magic ones are not as good as the old battery Bluetooth ones.
I make demo films and take photos on a 2017 IPad Pro and my great value new iPhone SE then edit stuff with my Apple kit - a breeze to do and superb quality with a pro mic. So I’m an Apple fan for audio visual.
Finally, please don’t flash any expensive new Apple gear around on campus, for your own safety, future bank balance and security reasons.
If I were you, I’d stick with the retro Air until the iOS doesn’t get updated. Take that on your trips overseas - sensible, nostalgic and durable.
Based on observing hundreds of my students over many years, spend you cash on gigs, beer (optional) and trips out with your new mates. Think green.....
Best of luck with your studies.
PS - I lecture in engineering, and bootcamp or parallels is a must to access the special software that we give away free. This includes major packages like MS Project Pro and Visio Pro. Hence intel rules at the moment for me and my engineering tribe.
      Andy

At the same time, hope Apple bring down the price . . . and won’t hasten the obsolescence of MacBooks like that of iPhones.

I purchased and just returned the brand new 2020 MacBook Pro with 10th gen intel chips. Despite the dual fans due to turbo boost I’m assuming, many users including myself found the system running hot with a few safari tabs, RUclips and Spotify running. Gonna wait for ARM.
