Better Call Saul is the prequel to the award-winning series Breaking Bad, set six years before Saul Goodman (Bob Odenkirk) became Walter White's lawyer. When we meet him, the man who will become Saul Goodman is known as Jimmy McGill, a small-time lawyer searching for his destiny, and, more immediately, hustling to make ends meet. Working alongside, and often against, Jimmy is "fixer" Mike Erhmantraut (Jonathan Banks), a beloved character introduced in Breaking Bad. The series will track Jimmy's transformation into Saul Goodman, the man who puts "criminal" in "criminal lawyer."

I love how he played these guys from start to finish. He actually got THEM to find him a nice, out of the way place where he could clip them.
On top of that, because he knows they don't want anybody else in the department to really know what happened, they didn't radio in locations or current activities, further distancing Mike, in the eyes of potential investigators, from the events of that night
He also spent the journey staring out the window to know how to get back

He’s a very convincing drunk. People don’t realize how hard it is to act drunk without it looking comical or goofy. Natural drunkenness is pretty difficult.

Walter killed him out of impulse and anger. His ego was overblown as usual because he got called out. Not at all because he was scared of Mike.
Classic Mike -- he set this up not only to seek revenge, but also to confirm that he was doing the "right thing" by getting the dirty cops to confirm their guilt without a doubt. He didn't take them out on suspicion alone.

3:01 Fuck. I just realized. Mike knew the gun was unloaded and waited to shoot until Fenske pulled the trigger. He wanted the bastard to feel the fear of being helpless and unarmed before he was shot, a twist of the knife to demonstrate his sheer hatred.
Absolutely beautiful moment, plus he shot him first, probably because he realized the less experienced cop would be more taken aback, and thus, take more time to react by grabbing his own gun.
One thing he didn't seem to have counted on is that cops, especially corrupt ones, usually carry a side piece. That could've ended real ugly if Mike didn't react as quickly as he did.
And the bastard managed to painfully die from the bullet, getting injured and chocking on his blood

@@AizensPlan The cop pulled his own sidearm after Mike shot him. The first gun he had was Mike's; they were going to make it look like a suicide. That's how Mike knew it wasn't loaded. Though how an experienced cop doesn't recognize the weight of an unloaded pistol...

Easily one of the most recognizable and memorable characters ever put to screen.

Same goes for Jesse. He was supposed to be killed off before season 2 of Breaking Bad initially.
Not even that, he wasn't meant to be a character at all. The only reason he was there was because Bob Odenkirk wasn't available.
Mike would deserve a "Better Call Mike", the actor is old, but everyone would watch an entire series about him. Even the "supporting characters" in Breaking Bad are better than most of the protagonists from other series, brutal.
Walt Goggins was supposed to die at the end of the first episode. Instead he became legendary for Justified.

Well to be fair if he didn’t kill Werner Gus would’ve killed Werners wife because she was about to be in Albuquerque. Not just that but Lalo would’ve found Werner and given him a fate worse than death.
These two cops just killed Matty because they didn’t trust him for not being as corrupt as them.
masterzombie mike made it very obvious he wanted werner to live even telling gus, but at the end hed rather be the one to take werners life because he knew it would be easier for wener to accept.

I really like how the cops don't immediately die after being shot. Feels realistic how the adrenaline keeps the one guy alive even after being shot multiple times.

There is no such thing as a good criminal. It is just a terminology to sound deep and cool. You are not deep if you think that there are good criminals. Even stealing bread to feed the starving is not a good thing overall according to the capitalistic society and implemented laws that maintain basic order. One good act doesn't make you become a good person.

The thing I love about Mike is that he knows he’s beyond redemption for this and the many other shady things he’s done in the past, so he continues to do bad things but for the right reasons. In essence Mike is what Walter failed to be.

If he knew their intent then why does his whole tactic rely on the cops not searching him, even though they already know he has a weapon? In other words, it's an utterly nonsensical scenario and would never work.
@@garymitchell5899 You're missing the context of the whole scene. Mike planted the revolver in the patrol car prior to entering the bar, then feigned getting drunk, and purposely made his side piece, the semi auto the officer was holding, visible, so they would take that gun from him.
He knew because it was in the script, which he read beforehand.

@@finsfan90 Except that there is no need to suspend any disbelief. They literally show you what Mike does and the context for it to make sense. Some people are just not capable of putting a pre-solved puzzle together.
I love how as soon as Mike catches a round in the shoulder he immediately straightens up, resets and takes his follow-up shot while gritting his teeth. He's a badass!
Notice as well the duelist stance he makes as well. Mitigates your risk of being hit, easy to track targets etc.
There is so much anger and pain in that expression, and not just from getting shot
I really love the noir vibe of Philadelphia in this scene. It would be awesome if there was a spinoff about Mike's time as a beat cop.

@@13Gangland Yeah, that young Nucky Thompson is about as spot on as you can get. Also liked how that actor did a pretty good job showing the conflict in Nucky as a young man when he first became deputy, and while corrupt, still wanted to do the right thing at times, but his ambition often won out and eventually he just sold his soul when he set up Gillian for the Commodore.
There's no reason to tell any more story about Mike as a cop. This kind of request for the franchising of extra story is why good shows go bad... because audiences are seen to want more and the money goes after it. Just leave well enough alone I say. Let bygones be bygones. There's no damn need to see 100 hours of Mike becoming a dirty cop... Better Call Saul was the relevant backstory for his character already.

@@south97north we already new alot about Gus's back story. And Mike, while he is badass, didn't have enough character to be the star of his own show. When I say 'character' I mean his emotions never really show that much. While Jimmy's emotions range from sad to mad to happy and it is very clear when which emotions are showing.
Has anyone else noticed that Mike seems to prefer revolvers for his dirty work rather than autos? I think it's in keeping with his character. Revolvers don't spit evidence brass onto the ground.
Double action revolvers, always safe, always cocked, always loaded.
Plus they don't jam. Same reason he prefers bolt action rifles
No springs, no recoil, more accuracy also.
@Oreobush A self-loading rifle will never be as accurate as a bolt-action can be. the small variations in each loading cycle, e.g. how well sealed the chamber is, always cause a bit of unpredictability. Actual snipers still use bolt-action rifles only because of this. Only marksmen use self-loaders, but thats because they fulfill a completely different role in their troop. the best sniper rifles in the world all are bolt-action rifles. Ofc the ammo is another very important factor, you're right with that, but it's not the only consideration.
Coming back to what the dude said; the self-loading mechanism simply is another possible point of failure, increasing the chances of an issue. Your example with a dud is true of course, but it's a bad example for this discussion.
@Oreobush mostly yes. The big advantage of a bolt-action rifle is the tightly locking bolt, not allowing a lot of movement in the locking position. the locking being purely manual and direct, without a mechanism in between, allows it to be that tight. An additional issue with self-loaders is that part of the gas pressure in the barrel of each shot is lost due to the cycling mechanism and that this loss is not the same with each shot, at least this issue you don't have with lever- or pump-action rifles.
I mean, Im not a weapon expert of any sorts; this is just knowledge I picked up over the years from actual experts. But I was told by numerous credible sources that nothing can beat a properly built and well maintained bolt-action rifle in terms of accuracy (and reliability ofc).

I must say I absolutely loved Mike's storyline in Season 1 and 2 before he got with Gus because it had this old school thriller vibe from some of the best crime movies from the 80s and the 90s... Loved how they took the time to fully delve into his character and tell his story in parallel to Saul.

Max Payne 3 "airport music" moment
in BrBa season 5 Mike tells Lydia that he doesn't kill people as a prophylactic measure. It makes perfect sense if you compare that scene to this one, where he accuses those two cops of killing his son for nothing, just because they were afraid of something he might do or not do. Really shows you how consistent his character is in hating those people who are willing to waste lives for mere "prevention".
You make a great point here and I'm not disputing it outright. But I can't help but wonder how his speech from No Half Measures fits into that. He retrospectively advocates for killing a man before he kills his wife, and he regrets sparing his life so that he could kill her.
Surely killing the abuser would have been the prophylactic measure there, yet Mike sees it as the correct course of action that he didn't have the stones to take at the time. I don't know , it's certainly got me thinking about Mike's character a lot more though.
@@wjblegge I think the difference is that the man had already beaten his wife again and again by that point. Compare that to Matt, who made no moves against those crooked cops and who'd been talked into cooperating with them by Mike.
On one hand, there's the man who'd been given a million chances and wasn't dealt with, and there's Matt, who only 'seemed' unhappy with the situation and got killed for it.
I like this, but Mike does kill Werner for basically that reason although he doesn't want to. But you could say he doesn't do it in Breaking Bad because of how much killing Werner effected him.
@@aquanymphis8002 yeah I agree. It wasn't exactly killing somebody over nothing, or just in case they might do something. That man was constantly a threat to his wife's life and could have killed her in any of those occasions the cops had to show up to their house.
Overall, I think that the tension between the no half measure philosophy and not wanting to kill people just as precaution is what makes Mike's character interesting. It doesn't make him any less consistent, it just makes him more compelling. There is always an internal struggle going on. If you think about it, he never really lives up to the no half measures philosophy. He chooses a half measure with Tuco, Jesse Lydia and with Walt, over and over. We could say it is the very thing that signs his demise.

The fact they fleshed out a character that was supposed to show up once on Breaking Bad to the point to give him such an interesting background shows how brilliant the writers are.
Mike is one of the greatest characters in TV history. Every time he's in a scene whether it's in BB or BCS my eyes are glued to the screen.

@@monsters8730 He would have felt worse if he didn't do it. He still had his daughter in-law and his grand daughter. His purpose was to ensure they had stability, until Walter ended that. At lest BCS shows he still helped them tangibly, buying them a house and such.

I love how Mike isn't the first one to shoot, he lets the thugs dig their own graves first before putting them down.
I love many things about this scene, and episode, but I just realized, he set up his alibi perfectly too, bc he walked to the bar, then told the bartender he was going to be walking home, and in the end he did truly walk himself home, setting it up perfectly
My favorite part is that Mike doesn't actually have any proof. He just says he is going to prove it as a bluff to get them to take him to a secluded area. "Smart. It's what I would have done." Meaning this is exactly how he planned it.
This is probably the most badass Mike moment to me. He not only got revenge for his son, but he completely outsmarted his sons killers and got two dirty cops off the street.
I could watch Mike do anything. I'd watch him order take-out, or deliver mail, or jump on a trampoline, or go to the circus, or make a painting, or watch television, or play chess, or anything else.

He also purposely exposed the gun that they took away from him, so they also assumed he was unarmed in addition to being drunk. Great plan.

Mike’s approach to things is always just a thing of beauty. From that warehouse hit in BB season 3 all the way through BCS every single Mike operation is fundamentally simple, thoroughly practical and extremely efficient. The guy is just a machine
Mike was the stand out character for me. Not what I expected from an American drama at all. Old, unaesthetic, quiet and sinister. Simply a captivating performance, that couldn’t really work with any other actor.
BCS is set in 2002 and I am glad Vince made sure the cars and tech used around that era match in the show, its sounds irrelevent but if a show is set in the past it needs to be believable.
Kinda. Can't remember the exact scene but there was one time that a car in the background was following the camera was a fairly big recent model year car, something like 2013-2015. Wasn't in focus but as soon as I saw it caught my attention and I was like "damn what era is this show from?"

I disagree. Everyone in the game pretends it’s for the family or for the money but it rarely ever is. Everyone involved had every chance to leave once they had enough to live comfortably but it’s never for the money or for family it’s for the power and thrill that living in the criminal underworld gives them.
Walt could’ve stopped cooking meth once he got that 700K but he kept going. Gus could’ve stopped once he’d gotten his revenge on the cartel but we learned he had plans for expanding his own drug empire once they had been taken out. Mike had enough for his family long before the events of BB began but he kept going like all the rest because he enjoyed it.
At least Walt could admit that it was all for him at the end. Unlike Mike that died believing it was all for them when his past actions tell a different story.
Walt's ORIGINAL intentions were to leave enough $ for his family when he dies, but ofc we all know how that turned out.

Seeing this scene after Mike's talk to Pryce about bad cops and good criminals is what sets the stage for it all so well. He's walked the walk and knows better than anyone

You can hear Mike force them into making the decision. When he says "...I'm gonna prove it" you can see their expression drop. All planned precisely. Great writing and great acting all around.

The most badass thing is when he steps on his foot to stop him from crawling and to let him know he’s behind him.
The acting in this shows how “personal” this scene is to Mike’s character, holding the gun waiting for responses, he was savoring the moments.
This episode and Chicanery are the peak of writing in the the BB/BCS universe.

BCS is far more enjoyable than BB. Walt was a piece of shit through and through, and Jessie only grew up out of being a total prick in the later seasons.

Such a small detail but such a great one, at 3:34, when the cop rolls over, he tries to plead, but he can't even get the name "mike" out of his mouth, so the guy literally died with mikes name in his mouth
My favorite aspect of this scene is how loud Mike's revolver is. They didn't hold back and it literally echoes in the parking lot.
Mike is seriously the coolest, deepest character in the series.
Jesse is the coolest, Walt & Gus the deepest and Mike the the most fascinating.

I absolutely love the detail that when mike shoots the two cops with the revolver. He shoots only six times. I hate when movies/tv shows have a character that shoots a revolver 10 times at someone. This is why I love BB and BCS.
Although not all revolvers are 6 shot but from an iconic standpoint yes. It was accurate.

Jonathan Banks has said repeatedly in interviews that he is not any kind of dangerous badass so that can only mean he is a terrific actor for making us believe that Mike is.
And I'm pretty sure we all believe that Mike is.
Probably one, if not, the most satisfying scene of this series.
I prefer when jimmy played chuck in the trial, althought jimmy was the bad guy in that situation, here, mike had his reasons to act.

Five - O was so heartbreaking Mike was one of the few people in the Breaking Bad universe who was tragic and sympathetic. when Mike started his monologue and crying i was stunned speechless he knew matt was going to die but felt more gulity about corrupting him he wanted matt to stay a good cop but in his fear of losing him he told him he was as corrupt as the cops who killed him. what makes it sadder is that it sounded like Matt idolized Mike and saw him as his hero and when he told him his true nature Matt was heartbroken but accepted it because in a way Matt was probably a realist and so Mike could help him survive the precinct and agreed to take the bribe but sadly Matt's fate was already sealed when he showed hestitation. Jonathan Banks's performance in that scene was so groundbreaking it left me wordless
One of the best episodes of the series! It felt like a movie on it's own.

I remember watching Beverly Hills Cops years ago. I've only watched BB this year, and I didn't recognise Jonathan as the guy gunning at Eddie Murphy with that shotgun before he gets shot! The scene where he tells that Cop (it's been years so I don't have clear memory lol) to shut up calmly 😂 so it was quite nostalgic

That wide shot at the end when Mike begins to walk away hooked me on my first viewing.
Now we know what happened to his study group a Greendale Community College.
with the dying person crawling away, and mike stepped on his foot to stop him just to finish his revenge added so much to this scene. The writers are just amazing with this little added moment. So much detail and added flare. You dont see that much in action movies. Anyone else writing this would of said boom boom and done, with Mike walking away without issue. But he got hit, and to ensure the audience knew how ruthless Mike was, have the cop crawling away injured, and stopping him then a shot to the head. With mike looking satisfied.

Funni fact: The Taurus .38 Mike's carrying only has a 5-shot capacity and there isn't a cut to suggest he loaded one more round into the cylinder for the 6th shot used for the execution.
Also I wanna know how much Taurus paid for this product placement since there isn't a gun-inclined person in the US who'd legitimately take a Taurus over a proven revolver manufacturer.

powerful scene. love mikey's character: quiet, stoic, very smart, calculating and patient.
I love how he proves they did it by watching how they react to him saying “and I’m gonna prove it”.
Notice how, as that last cop turns to face Mike as he holds the bullet wound in his throat, choking, he mouths trying to talk "Mike, I'm sorry." but all that comes out is "Mikgh, I-gh" before Mike blasts him. Very cool subtle detail there.

Mike is my fave character. Think about it, Mike didn't know for sure that they would turn their backs to him, they could of shot him in the head without giving him a chance to pull his other gun. But Mike didn't care if he did die. There's nothing more deadly than a man who's not afraid of death anymore.

Mike fought as hard as he could against Gus to not kill Werner. It was Gus’ call at the end of the day.
Same thing with Drew Sharp, while Mike wasn’t the one to pull the trigger, Todd did it for that same reason
it's not like he wanted to. but if he didn't, gus would kill him, then werner.
Technically Werner did do something
Mike killed Werner because if he didn't, Gus would. Him asking Gus to reconsider and being shut down meant that Gus had made up his mind. He chose to do it himself out of respect for their friendship (or as close as you can come to one under those circumstaces).

If the 2 cops were this confident at covering their tracks, Mike's son wouldn't be dead to begin with and Mike would have no reason to come after them
They did what they did because they were paranoid about Mike, just like they were paranoid about Mike's son. So Mike knew there's no possibility where they let him walk
