Better Call Saul is the prequel to the award-winning series Breaking Bad, set six years before Saul Goodman (Bob Odenkirk) became Walter White's lawyer. When we meet him, the man who will become Saul Goodman is known as Jimmy McGill, a small-time lawyer searching for his destiny, and, more immediately, hustling to make ends meet. Working alongside, and often against, Jimmy is "fixer" Mike Erhmantraut (Jonathan Banks), a beloved character introduced in Breaking Bad. The series will track Jimmy's transformation into Saul Goodman, the man who puts "criminal" in "criminal lawyer."

Actually it's never been confirmed exactly what Hailey is. She doesn't age beyond 10 years old externally but beyond that little is known it's suspected Mike was some type of handler for her kind possibly beginning with his military service or through contacts but what is known is shes obviously very highly evolved and loves hungry hippos and balloons and was likely the muscle behind Frings entire operation with Mike carrying out her orders. This is also explains Mikes change of heart about working with the late Heisenberg. He was instructed to by Hailey who did not share the intense loathing for Walter that Mike did as she had no interactions with the man but wanted to be apprised of his progress in the drug world and if necessary neutralize him or Mike if he became to great a liability which seems to be the case after Mike lost the second multi million dollar bank stash and had to go on the run she manipulated Walt into carrying out the hit and Hailey then cut ties and retired from the drug scene with noone left alive who could identify her.

Violence and action only ACCOMPANY the actual story and have no purpous by themselves.

Its hard to believe such a slow buildup of a show based on law practice can make such an action filled moment so much more meaningful and suspenseful.
My favorite parts of this scene. The man with the mouth tried to use his mouth against those that speak another language, his powers are useless here and maybe he needed to know his own toolkit for the future. Another thing is how empathetic Mike is towards his shock. Mike knows you don't become as hardened as him without going through those first moments of shock the first few times which makes me think either he felt the way at one point or he cares about Saul in a way that he cared about another almost, maybe his son, if Mike can't protect his son maybe doing what he does for others makes him feel less useless. Either way Mike didn't need to save Saul he choose to.

I love the choreography of this firefight. You see them just randomly dumping rounds downrange without selecting targets because they have absolutely no idea where the shots are coming from. They have a vague idea of the direction, but that's all. Even if they did know precisely where he was, it'd be trying to thread a needle in a tornado with their optics. Best they could do would be getting the rounds close enough that Mike is forced into cover and they can drive away.
Mike, however, has a vantage point and cover+concealment. They could empty every round they have and never even come close to being a threat to him. He can simply take his time and eliminate each one.

It does seem pretty heartless, but to be fair by that time their relationship had deteriorated to the point Mike didn't hesitate to threaten Saul on Gus' behalf.
Not to mention Walter at that point had poisoned a child, killed a cartel boss, and made it clear he wasn't going to stand any more backtalk from Saul.

Sudden theory : Because Jimmy didn't know he wasn't going to die and they managed to tell his story not our story.
Supported : I read a bit recently : Director wanted Jimmy in every shot so it played out as much as possible from his perspective.
So, yeah, the directing wasn't "And then Jimmy's assailants and Mike were involved in a shootout" but rather "OMGFUCKFUCKFUCKI'MGONNADIE." Not saying it's easy, but that that is what was going on and why it was effective.

Growing up in EPTX at this time, I am impressed at how BCS even made sure that Chihuahua plates were accurate to the era this was set in of 2004.
The yellow strip plates are what I would see on "regular" cars back then, coming in from Ciudad de Juarez. Rich people driving newer cars had a different plate, like seen on the twins' Cayenne Turbo. Crazy how time accurate this is.

From his perspective, even if he DOES survive this, he's getting indicator after indicator that there's no escaping whoever is doing this. Brilliant filmmaking showing them going out in the background as he crawls around in the foreground.

Saul is thinking how did I get mixed up with these people? I’m just a lawyer trying to make a good living and now I’m in the desert getting shot at! He practically soiled himself. He got lucky because he could have easily been shot dead. This was a great episode. Definitely gave me a chill and a feeling of helplessness.
