    Very underrated game, IMO.
If you thought Doom and Quake were great for 3D maneuverability in their time without ever playing this game, you missed out.
This was the only game I ever played that legitimately made me forget which was was up, if up even mattered after a certain point.

One of the first 3 fps games I ever played.
I think the first 2 I played were Doom 2 first level and Heretic.
When my dad bought a 200mhz pentium overdrive pc in 1996, I played the demo disk Descent Destination Saturn. I never had the full version until later in life, but as a kid I did have Descent 2, which is still often my favorite mid 1990s shooter of all time.

Ultra smooth moves, awesome playthrough ❤told a colleague of my first brush with x86 gaming, needed a video showing the fully 3D roaming playstyle, found a nice looking one with original gfx/sound (and HUD/cockpit off/fully zoomed, like I used to play it back then) but with a "novice"(?) player and your video was the "expert" link I shared 😉. Perfect 👌
Also admiring the level designs in your automap using the same (ship) controls in an intuitive way was pretty awesome as well!

Watching someone go back and play this amazing game makes you realize just how far ahead of it's time this game actually was. As far as I'm aware, it was the only game at the time that not only allowed you to, but required you to move and think in three dimensions. I know that now you could compare it to something like, say, No Man's Sky, until you realize that it took roughly two DECADES for a game even remotely close to this to be made.

      nothing quiet like this no..
here were a lot of flying sims back then.. some could do full 3D controls like this.. even the roll and strafe functions.. but most had TERRIBLE graphics and were all kind of same thing.. and all REALLY hard on the machines even with no textures and such lol..
but this just was an actual playable full 3D, controls are smooth, great controls and frame rates even WITH the fact it actually had "graphics" to speak of..
and the underground maps just add to the allure I believe..
There was certainly nothing else like it.. Terminal Velocity was a year or 2 later I think, but mostly above ground but very similar.

Playing descent on Kali online was the best thing I remember during the 1990's. I still remember the battles in the Minerva level. You memorize every single turn and twist and learn how to listen to sounds to figure out where your enemies was hiding. When the voodoo 3D video cards came out, it completely changed the landscape. Good times.

I think one weak spot of the drillers is that they can be destroyed with a single homing missile. It's pretty effective against them, at least when you know where they are. Thank, I'm just getting used to the controls again.. this was a true pleasure to watch, I hope to get back to being half this good again..
This game.. I have decided might be my favorite game... maybe one of the best ever..
Been lots of good shoooters, lots of flying sims and racers and RPG's and platformers.. so many games..
But THIS when it came out blew my mind, I always wonderd if it was NOSTALGIA and the WOW factor of playing a PROPER 3D game multiplayer..ectect..
But nope, going back and recently pllaying it and watching this.. what a game..no 3 hour interactive movie tutorials.. no being forced to play each level a certain way and being sold as "player freedom" no bs.. just good honest video game, 100% gameplay with no gimicks and just flying the craft when you get to this level is so satisfying..
Amazing how much BLOAT is the problem in newer games, I'm here for GAMEPLAY.. something you can just absorb yourself into for hours without people trying to get into your head or feelings or pushing thier agendas.
And man, its so smooth for mid 90s.. what an accomplishment.

Descent didn't have good 3d ports. The 3dfx original was the best, and there were some features missing, but improved graphics. Descent 2 however was a joke because it didn't properly shade the enemies, so they were full bright, and looked better in software. Never tried the virge version, but I think it was both broken and slow. Today we have like two ports, with only one being viable with dated graphics, and the other one improved graphics but broke the game and isn't developed anymore. As for carmageddon, it was ok, but the Android port ended up being the best version.

This game needs a remaster. As much as I loved Descent 1 and 2, those perfectly smooth, rectangular hallways are really jarring. Imagine how cool it would be to fly through a mine that actually felt like a mine, with jagged, irregular geometry.

Cool video. Back in 1996, when I got Pentium 1 - 133 MHz, there were a Descent game in Windows 95. I completed all 10 levels (as I thought) and then the game started from level 1. In this video, the last level was 7, where you should beat the boss. It was hard to play just on keyboard without mouse but now I realised that it was demo version like other games that were installed with Hexen, Majesty, Pitfall, Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain, Death Rally... :D

Played this to bits on local lan, then the internet wasn't really great and you could go online using KALI. But they charged for the service, so you needed to reconnect after the (10minutes?) timelimit. Sort of how Vocaltec Internet Phone worked back then. But man we played keyboard only back then.
