Hey Jackie! I actually have the wand kit. It’s well. Let me explain. So, you can assemble the kit yourself. The instructions are cute and easy to follow. The kit even comes with stickers! It’s pretty neat. I’m not sure what your experience with it will be but, it’s... not that exciting. The wand - device correlation isn’t the best. It may just be me, but take the kit with a grain of salt ;)
The paper likely doesn’t have enough texture to it for the wax to stick to. If it had been rough paper the wax has something to latch on to. That piece of card stock looks really smooth and if any of you remember coloring on super smooth paper with crayons normally, you know that it’s literally impossible.
I've actually done something similar to this kit (although with a hot glue gun that I dip into the crayon) and the only surfaces that I have had this work with are canvas or wood with gesso.

Before I watched the video, I thought "Crayon melting? for little kids?". When I was a little kid, I didn't really care about melting crayons, I just cared about having crayons/markers/paint in hundreds of colors. Melting crayons can be a bit dangerous without someone older with more experience helping the kid. I rather see Crayola come out with new crayon/marker colors than all this stuff because I really feel like they're trying to hard. They're still a great company though
I received a fragile crayon melted as a birthday gift. I've found that if works kinda like a glue gun. It needs time to hear up but it did heat up faster the longer i had it and used it. While I found that worked very badly on paper, it works great on canvas. One thing I noticed in the video was that she was using the cleaning tool improperly she was putting it through the flaps instead of lifting / opening the blue panel the flaps are connected to. The tools purpose is to remove crayon if you were to put too much crayon in the melted and the crayon overflowed ( which I've had happen) and in that case the cleaning tool works great. At the beginning where they crayon woundnt come out i think it got stuck in the upper section of the chamber which I've found the pen to be prone to doing. The cleaning tool can be used to push the stuck crayon into the lower part of the chamber where the crayon melts. Sorry this got so long but I hope this comment can help someone out
I’m so glad you done this review. I was going to buy my niece this for Christmas. I’m so happy that I’m a grain & part of the grain family. Because I would’ve ended up wasting my money and end up being extra salty.
@NerdECrafter, I absolutely love your content. It’s made me so happy that you’ve replied. I’ve just got out of hospital and it’s cheered me right up, Do you ever email them about their shitty sets and the fact that it peels off? The response from them would be great for a video.
@Kristen Ashley. Yeah same with my niece she would be so excited, but she wouldn’t enjoy it. When she asked why I didn’t buy it her, (as it’s one of the things she’s asked for) I will shoe her this video. She will be glad I didn’t get it her lol. X
They may have deliberately added extra wax to the crayons in the kit so that they'd melt better, whereas the regular crayons would have more pigment. Cheaper crayons would probably work better as refills, I'd imagine. Definitely doesn't seem worth it over all, though. And I've been getting ads for that kit, too, as well as a "program your own unicorn" one. I was interested in them until I saw the price lmao.
It’s wax. What do we even expect. It’s obviously bound to come off of a thing sheet of paper because the wax is hard. I see how they thought it was a good idea, but definitely not on paper, probably something stiffer like a pice of cardboard would have done a better job.
It depends if there is thinner wax in the sheet of paper (paraffin wax, not crayon wax) because paraffin wax is smoother than paper and crayon wax would slip of but paper is rough witch means that the crayons have more texture for the crayon wax to grip onto. I wasted my time.. 😶 *Edit: after watching more of the video there definitely is a paraffin wax layer on top protecting the printed design of the fish 🐟*

I know, I know, it sounds crazy, but let the salt 🧂 take over and think 💭 about it!
I think the crayons that come in the Box are completely different than regular crayons so it forces you to buy expansion kits where to buy specific kits for that device. That's why your regular Crayolas didn't work because they do something different to the recipe for the crayons that come in the Box.
I didn't have that trouble at all. In fact I made some beautiful art with this product. The problem I have is when it cools the wax falls off. That is truly disappointing. I am going to try a less smooth surface.
As a student that's learning how to code, staying up all night and putting my blood, sweat, and tears into compiling it correctly, I want to see the wand kit lol Hope you reach your goal!!!
"You get it and you make it." Hissed out was the most relatable thing ever to my inner child. I had so many things that never worked and that's exactly how it feels!
Back in elementary school I was in the Art Club and we did something similar to this. The teacher had about 5 stations with electric griddles (was only like 7 of us) and she had different crayons for us to test out. It was a lot of fun and the result did not look chunky like this pen makes the project look. My fav crayons were the ones with glitter! Really fun project to try out, of course supervision will be required :)
I really love when teachers go above and beyond! I still remember when I was in kindergarten and we made pumpkin art. The next day, our teacher showed us how to make baked pumpkin seeds out of the guts of our creations. I'm 22 and I still look back on it with nothing but joy and nostalgia.
This is just a guess but... The reason crayon sticks to paper when you color is because the paper has tooth (if youve ever used crayons on, like, marker paper or acetate, you know it doesn't work - its too smooth). When you color, the tooth holds a small amount of wax color. When you heavily color and build up wax and completely block all the paper, you can't layer any more - it just wont stick. With this, the wax is being layed thickly on top of the paper, not being burnished into the tooth of the paper - as you said, it's more like paint. When you peel it up, you can see the tooth grabbed a tiny bit of color, but for the most part its just sitting on top. And because the wax is so inflexible and paper is so flexible, there's no way it won't crack. The paper is warping because the liquid crayon contracts as it hardens - it shrinks, and the paper is fexible enough to move with it.
My high school art teacher actually “invented” this product! When she originally patented it, I know she was approached by Crayola but ultimately decided not to go with them. Her product is called the CrayPen. It would be cool to see a comparison if her product ended up being any better!
Crayola has failed us yet again...maybe they should make a crayon color called “salt”in honor of how salty all their customers must be. #nerdEficationsquad
@AsteroidTheDragon 73 isn't those just the English and American flap crayons. It should be plain white like salt so we can all be salty at how it doesn't work
I had a teacher in school that created a product just like this but it was called a cray pen and it's not as thick as this product and the tip is more pointed
This is so disappointing because the crayon maker from years ago was an awesome thing. You could pop in broken crayon bits and make all new crayons. My daughter had many a rainbow colored crayon and loved it. I kind of feel like Crayola has been cheapening products the last 5 or so years and its disappointing.
I wonder if the crayon would work better on watercolour paper? Like maybe the texture would help it stay on better? Great video btw! I always look forward to your salty reviews!
when I was in pre-school we used to melt crayons (not crayola) on a candle and drip them on paper. I know it sounds like a crazy activity for pre-schoolers, but no one seemed to worry about it (and I don't remember anyone getting hurt). But what I do remember is that the best thing about this activity was pealing the melted crayons from the paper. I don't think wax crayons stick on paper if they are melted.
Hey Jackie! I bought this for myself not to long ago, I actually really like it but I have a thing for melted crayon art. In my art school we had to do a project with melted crayons, where I had to melt crayon in tin cans on a burner from science class, I got injuries sooooo much. That’s why I love this kit, I’ve you it a lot at this point and I’m still doing art with it. ❤️ I can understand that it’s not for everyone but after I did it the art way for school, this is a better method for me.
An easy alternative is to weigh a piece of paper down on a pancake griddle and to turn the griddle on. This melts the crayon and you get the desired effect.
I wish it was more controlled I know they want to be able to use regular crayons but they might want a thin paperless version to go with a thin melter.
Although the product doesn't seem all that good, in all fairness Crayola wax crayons are very much affordable so it's not like you're having to pay over 10 dollars for "refills" especially for a little box of basic colors. Personally I would've gone with a dollar store canvas as it typically sticks, crayon melt art being a decent example. Paper and card stock isn't very suitable and it's a disappointment that they provided the wrong paper, etc. I find the texture and smudge interesting, and another thing is that complete coverage isn't necessary hence the bubbles and what not. While it's still not worth it in my personal opinion, there are many pros and younger users typically don't have the same mindset as an adult for example. I'm glad that you were pretty open minded about it and how despite the salt you can still point out some pros in the end.
I apologize for not finding you sooner, yeah you were lost, LOL.... I was searching pokemon crafts and there you were. I just love the saltEcrafter.... Keep up the excellent work....
all the crayola company needs to fix it : make it with 200 degree to 400 [ themostate] ,put different tips for gun. also make a colorless crayon to clean the gun, anything else.please post for her
This is too true!! Lol 😂 😂 I'm constantly lecturing my kids on being careful with their crayons bc if they're not, then they come complaining to ME that their crayons are broken 🙄
Saw this on clearance and thought it might be a fun way for my daughter, who does in home childcare, to repurpose all the crayons her kids break. Thanks for sparing us the disappointment!

I just put a naked crayon into a cheap hot glue gun- very small wait time and it works on canvas.
The salt is real wow. Jackie you are doing right
All I want for Christmas
A shoutout from Jackie!

*gasp* "I need this!" 😂 me in every craft store over something (no matter what age I am).
I brought m&ms to balance out the salt in this video .

Saw this on clearance and thought it might be a fun way for my daughter, who does in home childcare, to repurpose all the crayons her kids break. Thanks for sparing us the disappointment!
Yours came with much better colors than mine! I'm jealous on that regard. I agree that the tip is just too big. :(
The colors vary??
