  • "CRY AND BE FREE" · (ooh, haa, ooh-haa) · (ooh, haa, ooh-hoo) · who saw that stranger laughing at a clown · sometimes i'm up (sometimes you're up) · and your smile brings me down (brings you down) · to a place where we both believe we belong · (cry and be free) cry and be free, cry · show some emotion for me · cry and be free · most of my time is around you · i'm bound in your smile · stay for a little while · cry and be free, cry and be free · (most of my time) most of my time (i'm around you) · (i'm bound in your smile) · (stay here a little while) stay here · (cry and be free) stay here · (cry and be free) stay (ooh, haa) · cry and be free (cry and be free) cry · (cry) show some emotion for me · cry and be free · (ooh, haa, ooh-haa) · (ooh, haa) · cry and be free (cry and be free) cry · (cry) show some emotion for me · (ooh, haa, ooh-haa) · (ooh) ooh (haa, ooh-haa) · stay (ooh, haa, ooh-haa) · please stay (ooh-haa) · cry and be free (cry and be free) cry · (cry) show some emotion for me · cry and be free · cry and be free (cry and be free) cry · (cry) show some emotion for me · cry and be free · cry (cry and be free, cry and be free) · la la la (cry and be free) · (ooh- haa) (yeah) · ooh cry (i'm free) · ooh cry (i'm free) · ooh cry
    "Cry And Be Free" (February 11, 1984) from the album "Despite Straight Lines" (June 21, 1985) · Re-Released as "Despite Straight Lines: The Very Best Of Marilyn" (November 14, 2008) · Composed by Peter Robinson · Produced by Clive Langer and Alan Winstanley · Mixed by Julian Mendelson
    Tom Bailey (Thompson Twins) interview.
    What's your reaction to Marilyn writing "Cry And Be Free" about you?
    I was quite pleased; I thought it was all right, that song. I don't know if Marilyn knows me that well but he's got a point. If men have a charasteristic trait, it's that they learn early on not to be freely emotional.

    I fell in love with this song when I was just 12 years old, back in 1984. I taped it from the radio. It didn't seem to get the airplay that it deserved. I thought nobody had really noticed it, so it's genuinely good to see that other people loved it just as much as I did. Takes me back, almost painfully, to better times.

      I was heartbroken when it only made it to number 31. A lot of great songs bombed in 1984, Bourgie Bourgie 'Breaking Point' for example.

    1984-Marilyn has such a sexy soulful voice. On a warm summer day with a slight breeze, i'm laying under a big old red maple tree, listening to "Despite Straight Lines", relaxed and comfortable, my body sinks into his voice and i forget any cares or worry's in my life. Fast into the future of 2014, I could still feel the same feelings from that day, once I put on his cd, it brings back the fondest memories of those days.

    Although both Marilyn and Boy George started out the same..coming from poor families and living in abandoned buildings while developing their style..what Marilyn lacked were the huge resources George and Culture Club received from Virgin Records. Back then it was a "pay to play" type of scenario with music & tv stations..and Virgin payed mightily to have CC's singles and videos played. Which is why it is said CC built Virgin Records from all the profits they generated. Marilyn on the other hand was basically not given any support. He was only given the opportunity to make a small amount of music due to Boy George's success..and the record companies wanting to take advantage of the popularity of "gender benders". However..unlike Boy George's very comical and often "clown" type of makeup and clothing that didn't offend most people..the public wasn't ready for Marilyn's very sexual and feminine look and persona. The record company just didn't know what to do with him..and so they left him high and dry..with him barely getting any support or financial help for anything. No money to promote, tour, travel or make new singles. Nobody..no matter how talented..can do it all on their own..and because of this Marilyn's talent and beauty was wasted. Had he had even half the support George and Culture Club did..he would have been a huge star in his time. Pete Burns is evidence of this..as his record company did support him and Dead Or Alive went on to huge international success.

      Nightbird agreed. He has a really nice voice and a beautiful face. Very soulful. If he was starting today what a difference RUclips would have made for self promotion.

    • @Paul-Weston
      @Paul-Weston 5 лет назад +1

      I think today we're a lot more accepting of gender fluidity. I can remember a very uncomfortable evening watching top of the pops as a teenager with my mum sitting on the sofa beside me. With a cushion on my lap trying to conceal my erection. Boy George was sexy in a dress up over the top way, but Marilyn was just drop dead gorgeous.

    • @club1fan552
      @club1fan552 4 года назад +3

      Dead or Alive did not receive a great deal of support or promotion and did not have "huge international success" except in Japan. In the rest of the world, the only song that any one has heard of (except fans) is Spin me...

    • @Nightbird.
      @Nightbird. 4 года назад +5

      @@club1fan552 Dead or Alive actually were very popular in Europe and even the Middle East. But they actually made a conscious choice to not tour very much with the exception of Japan. Pete hated touring..so he was happy with the success he had. They could have been just as big as Culture Club if Pete had wanted it..but he didn't. Sadly..he died broke because of it and Boy George graciously payed for his funeral. May he rest in peace.

    • @club1fan552
      @club1fan552 4 года назад +1

      @@Nightbird. Lover come back to me, D or A's next biggest song only got to the top 10 in one country in Continental Europe. Switzerland (5). So much for being "very popular". The charts don't show it. As big as Culture Club? Doubtful. Teenage girls didn't run after Pete Burns or camp outside his house and Grandmother's didn't do the dusting to "I'd do anything"; "My heart goes bang" or "Hooked on Love." You are right about Pete hating touring.

You are too talented - You have that "Special-Hollywood-Charisma" Goin-on!! You have your Mummy's MGM - HOLLYWOOD - London UK Unique-unexplainable-Talent - Too Much Wasted-Talent"!! George wrote & produced a video about me! Wee. First it was a Poem & I got mad so I retweeted back to my top profile & said the answer lies within you George! LOL LOL Me So, he says okay Bitch I'L show u & he turned it into a video i didnt bother view for a little bit finally went it said before you go in it says "Taken The Drama on The Road With Me!! & I went In & it is this actually beautiful video all Black & RED w/his Gay back-up singer Singing "Melodrama" he wrote about me there was more words than just the poem & you have to watch his hand-mannerisms in the beginning its actually funny. but, another time 1 day I said "maybe its time I exist stage-right" I think you have had enough of Me "I think this sho Is Over" The curtains are closed. But, of coarse, I would never Stop Boy George or u from talking to me. I know you blocked me but, like you said yesterday in 1 of your talk-videos we do build some-kind of relationship if you welcome it to us the 1's you dont welcome you block all the way around. But, I just wanted you to know when I was screaming at u in tweets that I M NO DUMB I knew those 2 negative teets were about me!! It's a nice song... but lacks the depth of songs like "Time" and "Victims" by Culture Club. The video is a bit grand and overblown... but it was the 80s!

    • @Nightbird.
      @Nightbird. 6 лет назад +5

      This song has all the depth and musical production of the Culture Club songs you mentioned. And the video is grand because Marilyn was grand. However..what is lacking for both this song and Marilyn is the huge backing of money and artistic direction that Virgin Records gave to Culture Club..which enabled CC singles to rise to the top. Radio stations back then didn't just play whatever they wanted. They played what they were payed to play..and Virgin Records payed a lot of money to advertise and have CC songs played on the radio and their videos played on TV. Not so for Marilyn..whom didn't have anyone on his side and had to do most of his promotion himself. So the fact that he got as far as he did is a testament to his strong will and ambition. Had Marilyn had the same financial and musical resources CC and Boy George did..he would have been just as big a star. But at least he had more than 15 minutes of fame..which is more than most of us can claim.

      No, they just had backing from their labels. Pete Burns and Boy George were more androgynous and acceptable. Marilyn was just too feminine, it's like he crossed the line and broke the rules of gender conformity, in the early 80's that was too much. Now, 35 or so years later, it's not such a big deal.
