Maher is annoying in this clip because he's on Conan, a very vanilla show, and is being too confrontational and annoying for basic television. Honestly, I don't know him in real life. For me, he's sarcastic-I think he's very smart and yeah-he can be kind of a jerk at times...but overall, he's taught me a lot about politics and religion, he's helped form two big opinions in my life.

I am so tired of people like Bill saying that religion is pointless and stupid. I am a democrat and I completely support gay marriage, but I am also an Episcopalian. For my personal worship, Christianity is not about believing in some magical fairy in the sky, it's about the values of respect, kindness, and love which we show to others around us. I'm not saying that everyone should have a religion or anything of that sort, I'd just appreciate a little more consideration of the views of others. Why does everyone have to stereotype religious people to be non-supportive of gay marriage or liberal/moderate values?

I'm not sure if people realize this, but as an ex mormon they don't actually believe in polygamy anymore. That was quite a long time ago (like a hundred years for the main stream religion.) I don't know about that... It seemed to me like Conan was acting more like his actual, slightly more serious self in this interview, which he only does occasionally for people he respects. I think the fact that he even touched politics was pretty significant considering how the show usually openly avoids it. The tension felt to me like it was coming from the audience's mixed reactions and Conan seemed like he was really restraining himself from what could have been an incredibly interesting conversation.
I wish Conan corrected him when he said "2 in the afternoon" because im assuming it's 2 at night / 2 am. Aftternoon being for the lament after "noon" / 12pm.
