Ticks are a big problem here, too. The good news is that ever since I've been using a treatment called Nexguard, which I used with my old collie too for 8 years, he hasn't had one tick. I wouldn't let him run through fields though in the long grass, but he has been fine in the woods.
You must not have ticks in Britain? I would hesitate to let my pups sorta free range here in US, sadly.
