The mouth thing is called “chattering.” It’s the dog’s natural reaction to the (over)excitement of meeting a new dog. It’s a combination of taking in the other dog’s scent and releasing tension. It’s nothing to worry about, as it is not aggression or negative…just over-stimulation. It won’t happen again once the dogs are familiar with each other. It isn’t cobbing, as another poster suggested.
Not necessarily excitement. Dogs do this with odors/smells they find "interesting" because many of their smell and taste receptors are in the soft tissues of their mouths and not just in their noses. Some dogs do this all the time when they encounter an "interesting" scent. It is similar to when a professional wine taster (or tea taster) swishes the wine/tea around in their mouth, mixing it with air, to get the full taste.
@@jessicastolz3029 yep, it's the dog accessing its vomeronasal system, sometimes called the Jacobson's organ, which is located inside a dog's nasal cavity but opens into the dog's mouth. The receptors there can detect “undetectable” odors-especially chemical messengers like pheromones in pee for example. From this information a dog can ascertain the sex, age, season, reproductive potential etc of other dogs.

no way I could foster a dog. if they come into my home they are here for the rest of their lives. I'm 68 years old and lost the best four-legged friend I have ever had in my life because of Kidney stones. During the pandemic I had to work from home and my buddy was on my lap all day long. When we did Zoom calls, he would crawl up onto the back of the love seat and Reat hid head on my shoulder. If you could see me on camera, you could see him. He was the hit of the meeting. I’m sitting here all teary eyed. What a wonderful thing you are doing for our “very best friends”. At “75” I had to give up my house and my apartment building doesn’t allow pets. The best I can do is support the SPCA……Thks again so much!
Sheila handled those introductions PERFECTLY....paused, let them sniff her, didn't exude anxiety or fear, and played with them. She will fit in so well anywhere it seems!
What a lovely family! And what a big dog Sheila is going to be - look at those long legs already! Your dogs are a credit to you. I hope Sheila finds a good home and settles in well with them.
These guys are instinctual pros. Petting under the chin is a neutral affection, on the head inclines dominance. So any chin or chest pet (NOT the belly) is a place they could easily defend with a bite if inclined, they won’t but it’s a safe petting space. So smart. These guys are instinctually following many tried and rested professional methids
