..... glad I wasn't having a drink when you showed Bruce on the rachet chair .... busting 9 knots, just a rippen .... thx for sharing ..... never stop dreaming, just dream bigger .. have fun be safe, save our oceans .....
a water filter inline with your tap will make sure crud doesn't come out, and using a filter when filling from shore will stop any crud from going in. If you empty the tank out, you could get two hoses into the lower part of the tank, one to supply a bit of water to rinse the tank/get any remaining crud stirred up in the water, and the other to suck the little bit of dirty water out. 'Rinse repeat till clean;
i would do this but use the water inlet for the wash and just leave the outlet open. just make sure your bilge pump works. later on you could make an access hole.
I agree, let the water level get low and then pull the plug. I would use this time to clean out the bottom with a hose in the clean out hole. Also install a filter on your drinking water at the sink.
You've probably resolved your sediment issues in the water tank. You got the boat with water already in the tanks I think, and although stored cool in the dark, you may not know how long for, possibly from breaking down internal walls in the tank above waterline, or got in with loose tank cap at some point. Draining the tank, with a 'vacuum water pump' would probably resolve that problem. When tank gets low, rather than just fill it, pump it out with a sucker pump variety (vacuum), that should get most of it out. Then 'flush tank' - pressure water in with hose deep into tank, and same process - drain it with sucker pump, then fill to top - should resolve sediment problems. That'd be how I'd resolve it. Cheers. 🇳🇿 😎
Open the drain plug while filling from the top and flush into bilge. The higher pressure flowing out should stir up the particles and flush out without running the pump.
Everyone has the same water problem, not to worry. Always filter your water or drink bottled ( might be a storage problem). An inline filter works but you'll need a pump that'll push it.
I found your channel this morning and been binge watching all day. I watch many many sailing channels but this one has to be on my favorite list. You both are great at bringing the realities of owning and living on a Sailboat, your editing skills are really great and your personalizes are magnetic. I have Subscribed and now looking forward to future episodes. Stay safe from Calgary.
I had shells and sand in mine. I had to drill access points into mine. I also had to tape some flex hose and suck all the nasty stuff out. Then did a (2-3 gallon per 200 gallons) peroxide soak for a few days to clean all the plumbing. After that did a fresh water clean using stuff from the RV store. After that we have been golden. Lots of work but you have to get into the tanks without question.
Interesting, that seems like the bullet proof way to get this resolved. Off course we can filter, but I want the gunk gone, and the filter as a secondary means of keeping the water clean. Thanks for sharing!
In the RV world we use ice cubes to "scrub the tanks" Put 15 lbs of ice in before a ride. Theyll agitate the sediment then drain them and sediment after it melts. Usually takes a few cycles but it works wonders
When we had a dirty tank we filled our completely empty tank from the hose at the dock and opened the cold water tap in the galley and let it run until the tank is full flushing the sediment out, took a few times to get it clean, and once in a while will let the tank run dry and repeat the process again. Looks like a great time up in "Destination" Sound.
Plum a drain line in the tank, catch the water draining out and fill at the same time, it will stir the water and get the sediment moving. That's what I have done in the past. Good luck
We had the same problem on our boat, you will need to install a dual filter first from the tanks will be a sediment filter and right after install a charcoal filter, hook this up to your drinking water tap and viola you will have clean clear and good tasting water.
You could possibly get a small submersible pump to attach to the drain hole & use it to succsun it to remove the sediment from the tank & then just use the same submersible pump to succ some water in to the water tank to replace the removed water with the sediment from the tank.
Always a pleasure following along with you three :) Keep up the fantastic work! Ben, as you're announcing you're pulling into DS and rolled up your sleeves.... you looked like a real live Johnny Canuck and THAT made me smile HUGE as a Canuck fan. Cheers for that. And about the Q&A request... Would be great to know you guys a little bit better , this said we're did you met eachother your passions you're dreams etc.
You should ALWAYS filter your drinking water... I now live in a sticks and bricks but I won't drink any water unless it's been filtered... When I lived on the road I carried a filter with me so I could filter my drinking water. There were many times I had to get my water from unthinkable places... LOL... Much love and prayers be blessed in Jesus name... BBE...
Agree!!! Also consider adding a bit of bleach to your tank each time you fill it. We never drink our tank water but we do use it for things like coffee and cooking because it is boiled first.
In any case I would put a 2 or 3 stage filter plus UV filtration just for drinking water. Is pretty cheap if u do it yourself: Just buy a 3 filter stage and put in it 30, 5 end 0.01 micron filters. The last one with carbon. After this consider to put an UV filter. In this way you solve the problem for the drinking water. Once the tanks are clean u may stop replacing the 30m filter leaving an empty shell. Concerning the tanks I would put a water hose in the bottom hole and clean the takes moving the hose inside the tanks. If this isn't enough consider some solvant and/or removing the tanks put a bigger hole in them from the top. I now it's huge.. but as a last option.
First a strainer before your 12 v pump ( between tank and pump) then a Charcoal filter on the “out hose/pipe”. Also, start filtering your water as you top up tanks.
@@BreakingWavesSailing There's a lot of cruisers out there that screw on a charcoal filter at the end of the "water filling hose" to filter out any water coming in before it hits the tanks. Not a screen but like a Britta type filter. :)
@@BreakingWavesSailing hi....Brentwood Bay, BC boy here (now on my catamaran in Florida). I use a standard filter/ housing that you would buy at Home Depot or Canadian Tire (!) for your kitchen. Put a water filter/faucet for your drinking/coffee/tea usage. Later on put an access port in the top of your tank to suck out the garbage in them. Instead of a generator have you thought about solar panels?
Yeah the solar and battery bank upgrades will for sure be needed to keep running laptops like this, the generator was a quick/easy short term fix. That slots in at about 3rd or 4th on the big project priority list. Standing rigging is our biggest priority right now.

For us, the most important thing is to find anchorages with 3-4 bars of cell coverage for video conferencing. This can be a challenge once out of the urban areas (many people have recommended we install a cellular booster on the top of the mast). Good cell coverage during the work week is a must, but also easy access to shore for the dog, and some trails or space for exercise, and ideally a small grocery store and maybe a pub near by is perfect - stay tuned to see what we find over the summer!
