That piccolo sound was INSANELY popular in the 90s. And, it has nothing to do with my personal preference, but I ABSOLUTELY feel the piccolo was the way to go, especially with the beautiful dynamic you'd get with a punchy, low-end kick. Just perfection. David from Korn used this dynamic to great effect on both "Life is Peachy" and "Follow the Leader".
He's got some very respectable chops. To those who are saying he's off tempo, look up syncopation, and utilizing other time signatures within 4/4, this guy is on point.
Troll comment. I know drumming and never told others they didn't. I just explain what I think. And regarding Otto, super Groover. Feel, touch and choice. He had it here. What's your excise
this guy has a great feeling of music, he got that groove, he brought a lot in new metal with his jazz school and been developing through limp bizkit albums. he has his own style, just listen to a short solo in "nobody like you" i think its a great drum solo there.. its not much of the technique, but with great feeling and emotion. that's what every drummer needs besides the technique part.
i love the points where it seems like he's about to screw up and not land it on the beat but pulls it together in this weird changing of space and time kinda way, love when he does that on the drum solo in Nobody Like You
Awesome drummer! It's amazing how a drummer as good as John Otto can put in a bunch of complicated fills then come back in spot on to the beat/music. I'd be so lost/rushed but then again my limit is wipe out or we got the beat!
He doesn't play double bass kicks in any Limp Bizkit song specifically that I know of, no. He was using double kick for a bit in that beat he just played in the video though. At 2:07 - 2:13 there's double bass kick.
John Otto is amazing :p Only problem, his drum kit is so large by now...you can't really see him during shows :D he aint the tallest drummer around but he got one of the biggest kits around. I really hope Limp Bizkit will make a new Album soon
@antilus709 What you're referring to is called syncopation. The only signature change he makes is from 4:4 to 6:8 for fills, neither of which are "off-time".
@311Vision its pure otto! one of his signatures. personally, i would never play a snare like that, but he makes it work in a way thats awesome. just one of the many reasons i idolize the guys playing.
Nu metal drummers are normally very good. It's an underrated genre just because it doesn't waste song minutes on playing solos, and concentrates on sound mostly. He'd be a good jazz drummer as well, u can see the skills
@ThomasMetal75 Aesthetics... well, not for all drummers, For Example, The Rev of Avenged Sevenfold, His drum kit is really huge too: 11 Cymbals, 6 Toms, 3 bass drums. but he still uses them all! except his 2009 Kit(he passed away in 2009), he used a Double Pedal on the middle bass drum, the 2 other bass drums are for aesthetics again..
I never cared for or liked Limp Bizkit at all but John Otto has always been a powerhouse. They were definitely one of the tightest bands of their era and I always thought Limp Bizkit could easily stand alone greatly just as an instrumental band because their grooves could be so immaculate because the rhythm section is just that good. Kinda the same as I feel about Megadeth with Nick Menza or Gar Samuelson
Awesome, I see a Portnoy influence in the way his kit is set up (Not his playing, before you all wave the comparison stick at me). Love John Otto. He really knows the feel and groove, something alot of drummers are missing today.
he is a great drummer. He surely brought up to Limp BIzkit that funky rhytm style, whis is cool, cause you could get someone lame, who will fuck up everything and just play straight rock beat and with this guy they got much more there unique sound. Hey, i still remember that cool drum beat from My Generation, its very catchy.
@THEpearldrummer it's not always about being a machine when it comes to music. Personally I would sooner listen to somebody playing something with a bit less accuracy but interesting.
One of the best drummers in Nu metal no doubt. Love it or hate it, Limp Bizkit had the best drum sound back then. In my opinion.
Still the best in my book especially these days lmao
Very similar to early korn sound with david silveira
And Chad from Deftones
That’s studio magic. Not OV drums. They are actually pretty crappy.
He's a god damn machine dude! He will always be in my top 5. Unmatched unique technical skills
I’ve always loved his snare sound. So crisp.
Signature jazz/funk snare

heyimgoingtoplaysomegames actually in follow the leader he used some type of 14x6.5 bubinga or maple tama starclassic but just cranked it
Indeed.
The snare??? That yes also, but he is the master of cymbals
I love this because it shows he has the chops and yet holds back and plays exactly what’s right for the band when he plays for Limp Bizkit
John Otto, Take 'em to the Matthew's Bridge
Krispynachos 99 Dj lethal bring it on! Oooooooh yeeeaahh
Can You Feel It?

i just love otto´s drumming in limpbizkit´s "nobody like you"
has got a nice solo and some groovy breakbeats
this guy has a great feeling of music, he got that groove, he brought a lot in new metal with his jazz school and been developing through limp bizkit albums. he has his own style, just listen to a short solo in "nobody like you" i think its a great drum solo there.. its not much of the technique, but with great feeling and emotion. that's what every drummer needs besides the technique part.

John is an under-rated drummer..man you can learn a lot from this guy!
I think being a student of John Otto is the dream of every drummer.
Its never been my dream
Awesome drummer! It's amazing how a drummer as good as John Otto can put in a bunch of complicated fills then come back in spot on to the beat/music. I'd be so lost/rushed but then again my limit is wipe out or we got the beat!
Needs to be more drum clips like this of John there barley any I thought there would be more by now ffs. Amazing drummer still
got this solo a travis barker solo a chad sexton solo and an adrian young interview on a cd rom when i ordered my ocdp kit a couple of years ago.
he's so underrated
He plays with so much emotion. That gives his style the degree of perfection.
You know its 90s/early 2000s when theres Zildjian Zs
That Ocdp snare sounds killer 🙏🏻
He is soooo frkn good.
And that snare sound is still to die for.
john otto is a sick drummer. not cuz of his technical skill but cuz he's playing with SOUL.. which in my opinion is wut it comes down to
He's one of my favorites.
John Otto.... A genius... A god alive!! No comment
Calm down with the God $hit there Pal.
I appreciate the ghost in their music.
def one of my favorite drummers, playing fast isnt anything, its about technique and finesse, that's impressive.
MMMMMM That OCDP snap snare. 😍
john ottos always been one of my favorite drummers. he knows the groove and rhythm feel like no one else.
he had a pretty cool pocket at the start for like 15 secs, then it just all falls to shit, nice work taking us to the matthews bridge
People forget to realize that he was in jazz band in high school so that's why he has a good tempo
With his chops and technique it's obvious he was either a jazz or gospel drummer
I refuse to believe that. Absolutely nothing in his playing shows me he ever played jazz
05:01
John giving himself advice while the other John gives him the exact same advice!
with this guy i started playing air drums and began to get interested in drums. Really nice influence from him.
i love that fucking snare it's so crunchy
haha take em to the matthews bridge!! gotta love jacksonville.
that's the kind of musician I love to see: doesn't necessarily play only his band style, but knows how far music goes, eclectically amazing.
After reading about him in several publications, and with all of the training & studying he says he has done, I was expecting more from him.
Mad people dont know this but Sam Rivers and John Otto (who are cousins by the way) were trained in a like jazz funk fusion style.
He doesn't play double bass kicks in any Limp Bizkit song specifically that I know of, no. He was using double kick for a bit in that beat he just played in the video though. At 2:07 - 2:13 there's double bass kick.
I also proper want his outstanding drum kit! Its BEAUtiful!
just gorgeous drumming....so good
He started out as a jazz drummer; he's just grooving. I respect the guy, despite his choice of band (i.e. Limp Bizkit).
He did it all for the ______

Completely underrated
John Otto was a jazz drumer before he met Limp Bizkit!... it's not "out of time" it's Jazz
This guy fits in more diddles than Flanders.
Alternative title : John Otto plays old school porn soundtrack
@antilus709
What you're referring to is called syncopation. The only signature change he makes is from 4:4 to 6:8 for fills, neither of which are "off-time".
I’ve always loved his hi-hat too. No matter who uses it, it’s always “ah yes the Otto hi-hat”
John Otto best drumer in the earth. Limp bizkit - Argentina - 26 de Octubre yeeeaahh baby!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Someone knows name of the track he s playing along? Love this
@snarfizzle Hell yeah bro. My Vented-20-ply OC snare is sensitive/dry enough, but 30 and 40-ply OC snare? damn! Looks like a hollowed-out tree trunk.
@311Vision
its pure otto! one of his signatures. personally, i would never play a snare like that, but he makes it work in a way thats awesome. just one of the many reasons i idolize the guys playing.
One of the best nu metal drummers, no doubt🎉
he seems like a great jazz drummer... he should play hip hop rock.
for a nu metal drummer he is extremely good. for a jazz drummer he is probably a bit below averege.
His dad was a jazz drummer
Disagree, he’s got some chops. He’s no Chris Coleman but he’s not bad either.
Nu metal drummers are normally very good. It's an underrated genre just because it doesn't waste song minutes on playing solos, and concentrates on sound mostly. He'd be a good jazz drummer as well, u can see the skills
@@massimocarta666 actually I think you're probably right. I'm a huge fan of David silviera. He made Korn, and they were never the same again.

The best left hand in (Nu) Metal.

Same goes for wes
Wes, Sam, Dj lethal all of them are waay talented
