    I used to buy those H.E. Harris bag-o-stamps at Woolworth's for 99 cents in the 1950's.

    It's weird how many stamp collectors used to live in Santa Ana. I grew up there from about 1970 to the early 90s.

    H.E. Harris packets/bags like that were one of my first introductions to stamp collecting about 20 years ago. It's neat to see that they're still around (and much as I remember them--good variety of low-cat stamps, but always colorful and minimal duplication). Great video!

    Thanks Ted. Great buy on the stock books. I have seen used stock books sell for more. Nice mixture for a starter collector. Wish we had a shop like that around here. Sadly the closest Hobby shop is a 4 hour drive one way.

    This episode reminds me of the "Big Bag of Foreign Stamps" that were 700 and then later 500 for a dollar that you could get at Woolworths in the early 1960s when I was 10 or 11. Half of the fun of it was soaking the stamps off - and I still enjoy it today - even though I mostly collect older issues. Thanks, Ted.

    Greetings from Kentucky. Nice video, sir. I like the Harris guide. I use it to help me identify vintage stamps and a roundabout value. Also because it was more affordable than the Scott catalog. But hey, to each his own. 😀

    Glad to know that there are outlets like Hobby Lobby in the US (which is not available in my country). Super great deal for the stock books!!! The stamps in their packs are the opposite though, which I am not motivated to even soak them. Want to check out Hobby Lobby website but somehow it is down now. :(

    • @tedtalksstamps
      @tedtalksstamps  2 года назад

      Yeah, the stamps were not particularly exciting, but I think they would be suitable for a young beginner, as there was a good mix of quality countries. It wasn’t stuffed full of British Caribbean islands or African wallpaper.

    • @joyseng

    I have a few Entrust Collecting stock pages to house my first day covers. Overall they seem to be fine quality. Nothing to write home about, but sturdy enough to get the job done. They're certainly good for the price!
    Glad to see a review of Hobby Lobby's stamp bags. I'd been thinking of filling out my collection with one of those bags, so it's nice to know what I can expect if I were to get one. Happy Stamping!

    I want to thank you for telling us about Hobby Lobby and its offers. That is a fantastic deal on the Lighthouse stock book. I had a friend of my roommate buy me one at Hobby Lobby due to my incapacitation. I could not pick it up myself and as a result and I did not know there were other nifty things like the H.E Harris cat and the grab bags. I think I will get some hinges and maybe a bag for the fun of it. The last time I picked up a bag was in 1962 and the bag had so much duplication, I did not buy another. Also high price catalogs like H.E. Harris, Mystic and Brookman seem to give everyone the impression that the hobby is doing well, but unfortunately, this is not the case as APS membership continues to drop, although slowly. I also have a suggestion for a show. Scott has now gotten checklists for the major countries so you can keep track of what you got. I would like to know more about it. Again, thanks again for a very interesting and informative episode.

    years ago I got a lot of postage stamps of course from all over the world except the US but these pieces are very old and I have seen some videos that indicate very high prices and I saw that you saw a price guide and I bought today from Amazon the one of 2022 I hope it will also bring prices like from England Reyno united among others

    • @tedtalksstamps
      @tedtalksstamps  2 года назад

      Hi Sergio. Just realize that catalogue values reflect actual selling prices very poorly. Retail prices are commonly only 20 to 40% of Scott Catalogue values. The Harris catalogue values as I mention in the video are even higher than Scott, meaning that you can expect actual retail prices to be 10 to 25% of Harris values.

    Another fine video! 👍 I didn't even know Harris was still doing those bags. The last time I saw them was at a Books-a-Million in Kentucky, maybe 8 or 10 years ago. Like most big book stores, they are all gone now 😥😡 I bought a worldwide bag and was disappointed even though my expectations were low to begin with. For 8 bucks, yours didn't seem bad at all. I had no idea about the catalog; I bought a used one a while back but never compared the values with Scott's. I've most always figured on 50% Scott so the Harris one seems very inflated to me as well. But it is a good size if you want an alternative to the big heavy Scott.

    • @tedtalksstamps
      @tedtalksstamps  2 года назад +1

      Thanks, Phil. I like that the Harris is spiral bound. It’s so much easier to work with.

  • @erikmulder2574

    The Harris catalogue may be a disappointment, how about the 2022 scott specialized?
    I purchased one and noticed they have taken out the index and some other stuff as well to make separate issues from them.
    Now that is an earning model, taking out an index which I at least use very frequently and sell it separately to make more money.
    As if you sell someone a car and then tell them, if you want a key to run it, we have that for sale as well.
    Needless to say, I am very disappointed with the latest Scott. And no, I will not buy the index separately. I carry around my catalogue when I go to bourses and do not want to cary more books.
    This is also not a split done because the catalogue is getting too big (which it is) as it would be more logical to split it and have a separate section
