    Four days under a plastic mulch cover will make the grass compost, remove plastic, then add chips to dress it up. Deprivation of sunlight does wonders in the fall when it comes to weeding. Thanks for sharing your adventure with us. Hope this helps.

      @@diananazaroff5266 maybe it can survive 4 days ,but i cannot imagine it surviving a month with no sunlight and the plastic retaining the heat next to it

    • @diananazaroff5266
      @diananazaroff5266 2 года назад +15

      @@humility-righteous-giving Bermuda grass is not a typical grass. It grows by ryzomes with nodes every couple of inches where roots grow. Most grasses have roots attached at the bottom of the leaves. When you pull it, out comes the grass and you're done. When you tarp it, it dies and it's done.
      When you pull Bermuda, the little piece of grass you pull may get something that is 2 feet long or more with roots every couple of inches. If you don't get all of the nodes, more grows back. You can pull and get the main plant, but there are inevitably many lines with many nodes beyond the main plant. It is also a VERY tough plant to kill. It can survive up to 6 months or more under a black tarp - even here in Georgia where it gets very hot. If you pull the tarp too soon, and there is even one or two nodes that survived, they will grow to cover the whole area you tarped within just a few weeks. Also, you may have killed what is directly under the tarp, but because of it's reach, there are plenty of roots left ready to grow over the area you've killed.
      Ask me how I know...

    • @michaelpatton1044

      We don’t have Bermuda grass, but we do have our share of invasive plants. I’ve also had to use a spade to sever rhizomes around perimeter of mulch. I tend to avoid chemicals and herbicides in the root zone of my fruit trees. Would the pigs eat Bermuda grass ?

    So I would consider making round weed fabric and put it around the trees every spring when the grass starts. Then remove it after a couple of days / a week and put wood chips. Keep the fabric and when the grass takes over again put the fabric back and kill the grass again. Do this a few times a year and save yourself the digging and removal time. Love what you guys are doing keep up the great work and love the content. Thanks for everything.

    When I have an edge where mulch meets grass, I dig a pretty deep trench and fill it with mulch. When the grass grows in towards my mulched area it doesn't get a chance to root deeply. I just pull it out towards the grass and cut or rip it depending. Only works if the mulched area is grass free. In your situation I'd dig the trench, cover with a lot of wet cardboard and pile up the mulch again.

    You may know this already...
    Take green tomatos wrap them in news paper, put on a shoe box, place in cool dark place until you're ready to eat. Take out and sit in sunlight to a few days to ripen. I kept them up to 10 weeks. I served tomatos for thanksgiving and christmas.

    • @redmapleleaf4617
      @redmapleleaf4617 2 года назад +3

      Interesting. So does that mean if I have green tomatoes that I want to ripen up as quickly as possible that I should leave them in sunlight? I picked the balance of my tomatoes from my garden (some are quite small) but I was hoping to squeeze out one more batch of salsa from them. I was under the impression to box them in so that the gases they emit will assist in the ripening but by what you said it sounds like I should leave them in the open.

    • @jennifercullison
      @jennifercullison 2 года назад +1

      My grandmother always did this with the larger ones...the small ones became green tomato pickles or relish..the ripened ones were like gold during November and December

    Yeah, I've struggled with grass re-claiming our orchard too. "The Holistic Orchard" by Michael Phillips is a good read. He recommends continuing to add piles of wood chips yearly as well as underplanting with plants that can inhibit grass such as daffodils. This year I plan on spreading thick mulch from last winters pig compost

    Ben, up here they use professional landscape fabric. It’s silver, not the black one, and it lets rain percolate down. He even used it on the whole area, paths and on the borders around the perimeter. No weeds.

    the best thing I found to keep grass out is swimming-pool liner. My neighbor replaced his pool liner and I took his old one and cut it into tarps and rolls, etc. I put a 12" strip of this material under the chain-link fence between my neighbor and me. 30 years later there's still no grass growing. So, recycled material whose permanence is a plus.

      We used old heavy tarps from commercial hauling they had a few holes but it didn’t matter to us. Killing the grass and weeds beneath them for years.

    Try orchard grass. It grows tall, fixes nitrogen, crowds out bunching and running grasses and bonus is GREAT sweet fodder for animals. 'Cept then you'll need a hay cutter/baler for your tractor😐. It's a good hay making cool weather crop you can seed & cut twice a year. for right next to the trees, plant comfrey...lots of it! Brings up nutrients for young trees, makes a good chop&drop and perfect nutrient stinky tea for all your garden.

    Cats drool when they are really happy and you are petting them. It is a thing. My little jerk does it sometimes. She also WAS not fond of being picked up... but they get used to it. She crawls into my arms now to get picked up and craves the snuggles. She still tries to trip me up all the time by running in front of me. (hence jerk)

    Ben I recently watched a video from Deep South Homestead were Danny is showing us his fruit trees, he shows how he just mows around them and blows the cut grass back around the trees and leaves the grass to grow up close to them, they are growing like crazy, except a couple of them, which he keeps the grass mowed around it. It's quite a difference. I love your channel guys.

    My mom had a good idea to keep Bermuda out of her orchard. She laid down 18 inch wide sheets of corrugated metal which stopped grass from spreading. It's windy where she lived so she needed to weight them down.

    I had wood chips delivered to my yard and covered hardpan with some stubborn bermuda grass (I'm sure Bermuda is a lovely place - how did it become associated with such an obnoxious weed?). Of course some grass poked through. It took time, but I dug it up by the root cluster. Any piece of root remaining will hatch another plant.

    We have Quackgrass in Washington. It grows the same way. I would get some Polypropylene Woven Ground Cover like Living Traditions Homestead uses and put it down over your mulch. Weight it down with scrap lumber so you can remove it to fertilize and refresh your mulch. It lets air and water through but the light stops the weeds. I use it in my wife's rose bed but I put bark nuggets on top to make it look nice.

    Have you thought about planting 3 sisters style? Corn a bean, and your squash in a mound. You plant like 5 corn stalks, a bean to clime the corn in a round mound and a squash growing out of the side of the mound, and the mounds are 4 or 5 foot on center. You can use your beds for all your other foods still. The corn is supposed to protect the beans or peas from the wind and critters that like to eat them. And they are supposed to feed each other too.
