@@ndnd1671 Blizzard merged with greed lord Activision in 2008 just before wotlk expansion. And what do ya know, wotlk is the expansion that started to dumb the game down with easier dungeons, heirloom gear, and instant travel dungeon queues. Things just got more and more casual from there. Blizzard died with the Activision merg. A company who once made hardcore games for gamers now was catering to casuals to increase player numbers because Activision demands more $$$
Name of the game here is to relax take your time and enjoy. Raiding is very time demanding or at least it was, and i think a lot of people will burn out before so its not like modern. Then again theres alot of other stuff to do :-)
One thing you forgot with Hunter is that pets need to be manually leveled. So if you're level 60 and you tame a level 10 beast, prepare for level grinding! I terribly miss all of the little gimmicks. :(
I miss "Rare" pets actually being rare, and useful. Making all of the pets basically the same was probably the worst decision ever made to the Hunter class. Some of my favorite memories of playing hunter was camping out an area for hours just to get a cool rare pet, that would also have some special abilities and/or increased stats.
I picked up the dog that barks in the alliance base (my hunter was an Orc). I wonder if that dog will be in this version of vanilla. His name was Spot iirc. When you click on him he barks. And yeah I kept using that dog through many expansions because he seemed so unique to me, and I believe he was unobtainable after one of the expansions.
Pets also had no innate damage reduction, a channeled heal, aoe heals were group only, so they would die in any fight that had aoe damage. Also, their pathing would routinely surprise you.
This just shows that WoW used to be a game which had classes very distinct from each other. It was unbalanced in many ways I think, and that is what made the game so popular and cherished. Yes, nobody could do everything well, but there was always at least one distinct thing that only your class you could do. And that is what made it special. Also, the game was more complicated then, everything wasn’t made simpler like it has been over the years. That meant that your character and gameplay style could be personalized much more, and that you actually needed to research your class and many things in the game to get the optimal rewards/ satisfaction out of the game. That effort made what you gained valuable and meaningful. The more simplified and easified things became, the less meaningful and satisfying they became, ridiculous to say this but its just like in real life. Someone once said “everything should be made as simple as possible, but not simpler.” I think this is a great saying that describes what happened to WoW. In years, the sense of over-guidance, help and simplification in in-game structure increased so much that the sense of exploration and struggle decreased. What was focused on was instant easy gratifications in the form of many in game small rewards/ gimmicks/ cosmetics. The player base understood and felt that “wins”, weren’t real wins and thus they meant little to us. Everybody started being able to do everything by themselves, which meant that they needed nobody now, and hardships were also removed/reduced. Before, you had to look up which boss dropped what, which map has what resource or point of interest etc. , not every gear was class and spec optimized etc. This saw a decline in the subscriber numbers and general game satisfaction. Classes became less and less distinguished. You can even see that in how current pvp/ pve armor sets in various classes look indistinguishable from eachother if you check out WoW’s site right now. But in this video, see how a paladin looked so different from a hunter or a rogue or a priest. It was all beautiful. Bottom line: I am glad that game is back to its original roots: its not so balanced, less constructed, oftentimes quirky, full with easier and harder obstacles, its hardships. What I am most curious about is, how many people will be willing to return to a much less streamlined and harder game experience after all the years of getting used to simplification and the easing of things ?
My guild gave priority to warlocks for the 18 slot Onyxia Bag. Quite fair, considering everyone was bugging them for soulstones, healthstones and summons.
Great video... However all of you who haven't played Vanilla should understand that this video gives the generalization of the average player's experience playing each class. One of the great things about Vanilla was your ability to customize your spec/builds however the heck you wanted. There will be like 1-2 standard builds for each class, however if you are quite good and willing to go against the norm, I remember seeing some people who did quite well, at times even exceptional, with odd builds and/or specs that most considered not viable. Although I will mention getting people to open their minds and actually give you a chance to show that you are able to perform above the norm with an odd build/spec it quite a task in and of itself.
This brings back so many memories of my time playing original WoW, when I finally settled on a Tauren Warrior as my main. The endless running, the lack of money, the convincing a guild leader (recommended by a friend) to let me join, and then the endless 40-man runs with the guildleader screaming in our ears. Good times.
I don't know if people ever point this out but you have the impeccable skill of utilizing great music and musical transitions between topics. That aside, I don't know if I want to play shaman or a hunter. When I first started out it was during TBC and I made a hunter. I LOVED how hunters were in og WoW. It felt so damn good annihilating players in bgs and duels as a hunter as people knew to respect your skills because, like you said, the skill cap was high for hunters. I never minded buying ammo, I never minded the deadzone or having to engage in melee. I quit after Wotlk. I went back during cata once and was devastated to see how they gutted everything unique about the class. I still play now, but my hunter is STILL in his wotlk naxx raid gear. I haven't touched him since.
Just popped in… I mained spriest in all of classic 2019 thru dec 2023. Coming here for the vibes, and possibly an alternate route but I’m a spriest at heart. I really was hoping for some #changes this time around
"Strengths, weaknesses, and quirks" - sums up what was so great about classes back then and why so many are leaving retail. Classes felt and played so different back then. Many restrictions that made sense and provided boundaries have been lifted over time. Like being able to use spell reflect without a shield equipped, one magically appears in retail and removing paladins extra spells for attacking only undead and demon targets. Letting holy warriors be played on the mongrel, brutish, wild faction and vice versa with shaman. Little things like that chipped away at class identity or sensible immersion for over a decade to try and achieve the "hyper-balance" ,as you said, we have today. And we're left with the scene we have today.
I really think you make the best wow videos. The editing, music choices and your way of explaining really captures the soul and feeling of wow we all love. Thanks for doing this
Excellent video! Remember guys, this is going to be for you, for the player! Just play the game the way you want, do not blindly follow tutorials. Find some friends (either IRL or in-game) to play with, and you will find the spot in the dungeon or raid group that you are after. I for once, will have an enha shaman as an alt, and I will not go into groups for healing; I will go as dps and support the other classes in the group
Exactly, you may not get the best guild playing as these week specs, but I'm sure you can find a casual/semi hardcore guilds that don´t mind that much and want to have fun, you´re not 100% useless, well unless you´re prot pally or druid tank, then you really can't do anything past MC, sorry haha but I mean there are 40 spots in raids, having 3 or so classes with specs that aren't considered the best isn't gonna harm the progression too much, especially pre AQ40. Also these weaker PvE specs usually dominate PvP. Plus every spec is viable in every dungeon. Enhancement, Elemental, Retribution, Shadow, Balance, and don't get me started on Feral druids, god they can be sooo strong in PvP and literally have a high skill cap. And PvP in Classic is fun, I think everyone enjoys/will enjoy PvP in Classic, so competely different from current PvP.
I still don't know what class I'm gonna play on Classic after 1 hour of talking about them but I loved the video. It was greatly edited, paced and the OST was perfect. I'm glad I subscribed to this channel ♥
@@Gergo049 The good thing about that though is "Class identity". Every class (and Spec) in Vanilla feels so different and it has specific strengths and weaknesess, so you actually feel like your class and people recognize you for it. In today's WoW every class has the same core, being able to do pretty much everything, and that kills the class identity. So I think lore wise and gameplay wise is awesome seeing every class being better at one thing even if they can do more than one.
Yes, but some specs are just straight off unviable in raiding, and it just happens those specs would appeal to me the most otherwise. Ret/prot paladin, balance druid, elemental shaman.. they're just not good enough. Actually, apart from 1-2 classes, every class has only 1 viable raid spec.
@@Gergo049 It's sad, but true. Some of those things got fixed for Burning Crusade, but not all of them. In many cases it just shuffled the top specs or the top class for each role (Paladins making Warrior tanks obsolete being the chief example I can think of right now). I am still secretly hoping that if Classic goes over well enough that we will eventually see a Legacy BC server at some point as well (maybe 2-3 years after Classic's launch). Not that I think they will ever let Classic "go away" again but they could easily keep adding Legacy servers if there is enough interest. Everyone has a favourite expansion, but Classic, BC and Wrath are the most talked about since all took place before the Cataclysm.

Thanks man.. for your passion and your content.. Story Time: I remember the first day my Mum brought home a copy of this new game called World of Warcraft- I didn't know anything about it other than my rich friend liked to talk about Warcraft 3; The Frozen Throne. My Mum had got it because a friend of her had got it too and they figured they'd play together, me and my brother were watching with wide-eyed interest as she goes to the character creator and we all decide she should make a night elf. I don't think I will ever forget that opening, that narrator giving a brief history through a tracking shot of the environment- goddamn this game captured such a sense of wonder in us. I ended up making a Gnome rogue and my brother a Draenei hunter, those years were honestly some of the best for me in gaming, since for me as a rogue I realized that so long as you were careful and stayed in stealth, you could explore high level areas. I distinctly remember spending dozens and dozens of hours slowly creeping through the beautiful autumn colours of Aszhara and approaching that sunken temple that I found out was from the War of the Ancients- that's not even touching the main reason I made a Gnome, as everyone back then might remember, Gnomish Engineering had some of the weirdest and most situationaly useful gizmos in the game. I miss Classic..
@@NotAdamSandler While I appreciate the correction, I did play in Classic, it's just we didn't get to make my own character till BC, same with my brother. At first we only got to watch her play and sometimes, do quests as her character, a Night Elf Warrior. Don't mistake me, I wasn't raiding or anything but I was playing back in Classic.
This is the best video to watch/listen to while playing current and waiting for classic. I've watched it like 15 times and still dont know what class to pick
I've never played WoW, but I love this one video of an assassination rogue sneaking up on a retribution paladin who managed to kill him with one mighty swing
This video was so interesting, well made, nostalgic and even sad at some points that I completely lost track of time. I didn't even realise that I was watching for 1 hour. Great job, keep up the good work, you just gained a new subscriber!
I remember playing my hunter. Was an excellent class to play for fun. I tamed the fastest cat in the barrens for attack speed. The use of wing clip and feign death was invaluable in PVP and shooting an enlarged gun as a Big Tauren was just an epic feeling.
The fact that no one can seem to pick a class and thousands of videos are out on helping people choose goes to show that the class design was perfect in vanilla. Every single class has great strengths, weaknesses, and niches
Or it shows how tryhard it was ;p once u commit to a class, it's very hard to reroll, it's not like u can pay 60 eur to get to instant 55 and lvl 5 lvls ;)
Yea the commitment and everything defined the character to you and how you wanted to play them. It developed as you played. I played classic from 04-07 and I rejoined this year 2019 and it has been a very dull grind compared to classic. I’m so fucking ready for this it is the entire reason I bought time. I will make multiple characters, but damn it’s hard to choose a main at first.
14 years and 11 Warlocks Later. I can firmly say Vanilla was probably the worst for my class lol. Get invited to a group or raid just to summon a dozen people, and immediately get booted for a mage. 👍
@@sven849 Actually what you should remember, and this is a pro tip that got my main lock banned for 48hrs. BATTLEMASTERS in org. Yup. Wall climb up in the battle masters lodge in Org and summon an infernal down bellow. All players exiting BGs usually come out with low health. Infernal has a large AoE fire dmg aura. Usually kills lower lvls toons. Also they cant kill it because its aggro is 100% on you and since ur up a wall its just bugged out trying to kill you. ;)
Your explination of who this video was targeting was EXACTLY what i was thinking as im buying WoW classic today, Literally, "Lets check out youtube for a class to play". You sir, are a true friend of the people :)
One thing to note, especially for warlocks... in vanilla, you had the choice of what RANK spells to cast. So, if your tank can't hold aggro, don't stop casting... cast lower rank spells until they regain enough threat to open up again.
It's been a year since u release this video. I found it today and watch every second. The various soundtrack used is amazing, one of best videos I saw from year no doubt Ty for this!
Thanks for making this video. You answered my exact question. "everyone is diving so deep into the classes. I'm gonna play super casually, what should I play?" and I come across this gem.
~1 year into classic and still can't decide T_T Love the video though! It certainly helped me narrow some classes down and let me try some that I thought I'd hate. I genuinely appreciate the effort poured into the video and I hope the Rank 14 grind is going well.
I envy you. The first time i played was in TBC, the first expansion and i can say for sure it was my best game experience ever. TBC was a more complete and perfected version of Vanilla. I hope i had more time now to invest in Vanilla but you can't really do that now with a job and a social life :). Anw you're gonna have a blast.
@@someguy3508 Yeah I came in like a year before TBC and stopped playing around the time WotLK released. To go into the Outlands for the first time again... baby steps, I'll be thoroughly enjoying my first Deadmines re-visit :D
Thank you for this MadSeason! Such great explanations. This was great to watch, even just for the nostalgia (still can't believe it's coming back!). Playing modern WoW in the background while watching/listening, I realized that a huge part of the reason I still play today is because of the deeply ingrained memories I have of the feeling of challenge and camaraderie I experienced back in the days of Vanilla and TBC.
I did a lot of PvP in vanilla on my Rogue. I loved camping brackets when I was leveling. 29,39,49. Got all my honor gear for the next bracket before I started leveling again. I think this time I want to try my hand at PvE, some combat swords. Will be a familiar but brand new thing for me.
Andrew this is what I did as wel. In classic those 9 levels allowed you to get nice and geared up too. I’d also recommend checking out combat maces spec. Stun proc 😁
Best moment of playing my warlock: I was in a battleground as a lvl 26 warlock. I was attacked by a lvl 29 rogue with good gear. I had previously applied my soulstone and then logged out. I sacrificed my Void walker and did as much damage as I could. Then I died. I ressed with my Soulstone, feared him, and applied my soulstone again. I then did more damage, but died once more. When he thought he had finished me off and turned his back, I revived AGAIN, and then I finally killed him. It was amazing.
What's really amazing is that you were able to cast create soulstone without getting killed and without mana, and then to ignore the cool down and apply it again. Twice. Pretty interesting stuff.
@@noworldorder He did say he had previously logged out after applying his ss. I am assuming he logged back in after the cd was off. If he had a stone already in his bag when going into the bg it would allow him to apply it again very easily, fear, ss again, dot dot die again, rez a second time kill rogue
It's amazing how unique classes used to be. Hunter was my very first class and it felt fun and special to me, but now I can play any class and feel nothing for them. Now most classes have slows, stuns, heals - things that used to give a class value - but it's not like Blizz can just reverse those "balanced" changes because then everyone would start complaining that their class is useless now, they can't stun anyone, they died because they lost their self-heal, etc. I'm looking forward to the class fantasy coming back in Classic! I think this time I'll choose a priest (and then a mage and a hunter).
Poll - What class will you play?: www.strawpoll.me/17557953

Rogue for sure. Maybe have a mage as my first toon to make loads of money though!

@@ooooswain More like players killed it. Ruined over time by casual's feedback

Kayla Posey they leveled up rather quickly though - as far as i remember...
And yeah I kept using that dog through many expansions because he seemed so unique to me, and I believe he was unobtainable after one of the expansions.
just one thing? How about you had to be out of combat to place traps ;)
So feign death into freezing trap if u wanted to CC someone or something.
The game was much st popular when class balance was introduced, tbc and wrath also I wouldn't call classic dungeons/raids complicated
dude your editing is top quality, every class transition was soo cool. Bravo madseason

I haven't touched him since.
very calm voice, very nice and detailed overview - not too much, no recommandationes for specs/skills. just overall informationes

Hah hope you have an hour to spare this time =]
I can watch class videos for weeks, no problem :)
We are so back
"Strengths, weaknesses, and quirks" - sums up what was so great about classes back then and why so many are leaving retail.
You made every class shine! Now I want to play them all! Good Job!
hour long, interesting, well made video.
zero mid roll ads.
you're a gift.
Probably the best classic video out there. Amazing job MadSeason, you deserve all the recognition for this!
I still don't know what class I'm gonna play on Classic after 1 hour of talking about them but I loved the video. It was greatly edited, paced and the OST was perfect.
I'm glad I subscribed to this channel ♥
I feel like every class has downsides that make the choice harder. It's a shame that not all specs are good enough to be welcomed in raiding.
@hondrekroner monnay Every class looks, plays and feels really fun, that's the problem xD
That feeling when MadSeason uploads a long video.... and you have to leave for work soon.

Story Time:
I remember the first day my Mum brought home a copy of this new game called World of Warcraft- I didn't know anything about it other than my rich friend liked to talk about Warcraft 3; The Frozen Throne.
Brandon Lokison draeni is not classic so you played in TBC
you didnt play in classic then Draenei is burning crusade
@@NotAdamSandler While I appreciate the correction, I did play in Classic, it's just we didn't get to make my own character till BC, same with my brother. I remember playing my hunter. Was an excellent class to play for fun. I tamed the fastest cat in the barrens for attack speed. The use of wing clip and feign death was invaluable in PVP and shooting an enlarged gun as a Big Tauren was just an epic feeling.
This was so interesting, I sat through the whole vid. I usually don't do that with most ten minute vids.
Omg yea
i cant tell you how many times ive started/finished watching this. I seriously love your channel and what feels like the soul of wow you put into it.
@@GoliothOnline666 Thats when you summon your infernal and hearth
@@sven849 Actually what you should remember, and this is a pro tip that got my main lock banned for 48hrs. BATTLEMASTERS in org. Yup. Wall climb up in the battle masters lodge in Org and summon an infernal down bellow. All players exiting BGs usually come out with low health. Infernal has a large AoE fire dmg aura. Usually kills lower lvls toons. Also they cant kill it because its aggro is 100% on you and since ur up a wall its just bugged out trying to kill you. ;)
Seeing that clip from Drakedog brought back so many memories.

This must have taken forever to make holy heck

Best moment of playing my warlock:
I was in a battleground as a lvl 26 warlock.
200 IQ
That's when you get a surge of adrenaline and euphoria after such an epic fight. Such fun was had
I haven't played wow in over 8 years. Thanks for the memories. Watched it all in a sitting.
