    Bonham's style of playing just slightly behind the beat has never been exactly duplicated. He was the absolute best.

    Zepplin deciding not to go on without Bonham was completely legendary! Complete devotion to their original Band. Their come out of retirement for a last concert that was beyond awesome with Bonham's son playing the drums! I seriously wish they all were able to work together on a lot more albums..

      Probably because JPJ was busy or didn't want to do it. Doubt they banned him specifically or didn't ask him to play with them.

    A perfect blend of musicians that can't be manufactured. Jimmy knew he wanted Bonham because of the possibility of catching fire. The chemistry was one of the best of any band that won't be duplicated in this era of music and probably never will again.

    I saw zeppelin at knebworth in 79 (both weekends) it was their last UK appearance. Looking back at footage years later I must say that John was an awesome performer. Many of today's great drummers will confirm that.

      I saw them in 77-78 bitchen concert
      Johnny had lights in his kit and when he had his solo the whole kit lit up

      In my youth I saw some monster rock groups. Though I did see Robert Plant tour solo with Phil Collins on drums, my biggest regret is never experiencing Zeppelin live. Thanks for sharing that memory.

      Living 10 miles down the road from Knebworth it was hard not to say no. Tickets were easily obtained back in the day. I recall hundreds arriving the night before and the early hours. There was some confusion on the first weekend. A fence was broken through and people ran across fields to gain access to the main area. I reckon the organisers let people in early for safety reasons. Memorable times I'll keep forever. Even though they came on late Keith Richards and Ronnie Wood turned up with their band the New Barbarians. 👍

      Him and Moon are why I started playing. Other influences in there as well, but they were the main 2 at the time.

    A sound that’ll never be recreated. The back bone of the group. Exactly why the group didn’t continue on, they love him beyond the music that wouldn’t move forward. A true legend!

      So true. I believed he was one of the 3 masters of percussion. When asked himself in Seattle by rolling stone, he said he'd "like to play more like that canadian fellow Neil"

    Zepplin was the first concert I saw in
    July 1969 at Asbury Park NJ .
    Joe Cocker was the opening band.
    Led Zepplin guys wore cowboy hats. !!

      I saw Zeppelin 3x live, and still have all 3 ticket stubs!!!!!! One says-- Obstructed View, which was behind a beam in the Chicago Stadium in 1975-- I didnt stay in that seat very long!!! It's among the many dozens of other concert stubs from shows in my collection---

      A lot of bands live blew them away, they were very boring. Black Sabbath, The Who, Alice Cooper, Grand Funk Railroad, Blackfoot, to name a few.

    His synchronised hits and also off beat in a different time signature actually were
    mesmerising and most drummers will just say wow

    Being a classically trained musician from a young age I was completely mesmerized when their music first hit the air waves.
    When Bonham died and they decided that there wasn't anyone else who could sit on his stool I was, completely and utterly devastated. They're the ONLY band that affected me that way. It's VERY much like missing your favorite grandmother, wishing she/they was still here.
    I NEVER tire of listening to their timeless music, of which no other band can nor will ever be able to match THAT chemistry, never mind their composition and arrangement.

What I can say is that he nor anyone else had the feet of John Henry Bonham, that along with his amazing left hand, sets him above everyone else...listen to live zeppelin and tell me that you don't find yourself saying now thats definitely a double base setup.....well it weren't....

      Ian pace from Purple often gets overlooked too. Neil Piert was miles ahead of Bonham. Different league far more technical ability than Bonham. So did Ian Pace . From deep purple.

      @@fordism.01 i love those guys, but weren't better imo...the thing that made Neil more technical was his giant kit, had every possible option, so he performed with more tools, it was his thing, dosen't necessarily make him better. John played with a smaller kit and you wouldn't have known it without seeing it. I stand by my earlier statement, and so do many others

    There are many greatest rock drummers, what they are is unique. Paice, Peart, Bonham, Powell, Ward, Palmer, Baker. Seen 'em all and they're are all amazing. P.s. Ian Paice is still drumming at 75 and not spoke about enough

      Give me The Argument as to why he was "The Best Drummer in The World!"--which I think is Ludicrous.
      Neil Peart isn't even The Best--so how could Bonham be???
      I would say that his contemporary, Ian Paice of Deep Purple, 🟣💜 was a better Drummer than Bonham...

      Peart was Definitely better than Bonham--and I think that Ian Paice was Far Superior to Bonham, as well...
      I would compare the "Machine Head", "Made in Japan", "Burn", and "Made in Europe" albums of Paice to any of Bonham's playing...
      I'm Not a Drummer.
      But, from listening to Ian Paice for just a few minutes on one of his many videos, he is Obviously a Formally Educated Drummer--he was telling his "beginning drummer audience members" the importance of learning The Rudiments: "paradiddles and flammadiddles", etc.
      Ian told them that it was one thing to just have some fun banging around on a set of drums with some friends--but quite another if you actually wanted to play advanced drumming, which requires dedication, discipline, and study!

    Yes he was one of the best I've ever seen. I remember he said in an interview in the early 70s said he thought that the best drummer he has ever seen was Dino from the Rascals.

    Boy I remember that I was playing basketball in the concrete jungle of the South Bronx. I remember my friend call me up to the chain link fence and he told me that John bonham passed away choking on his vomit. I simply said that's the end of Zeppelin.

    When drugs and alcohol are more important than drumming,you can't be the best. I saw him in 75 and he was wasted and lost his place and I even think where he was. I saw Charlie Watts the same year . Pure dedication and he was the best drummer ever .

      Watts was far from the best drummer ever. Not even close. But, he was a true professional, from what I could tell. Bonham was a F up that threw it all away.

    He received a call in 1968 that would change his life forever, turns out it changed ours as well! I cant imagine my life without Led Zeppelin and i cant imagine Led Zeppelin without Bonzo, the greatest rock drummer of them all!

      Peart is really technical but Bonham definitely is a great,. tons of subtle things in his playing that you "feel" but aren't readily apparent.

    I kinda sorta named my second son with Henry as his middle name because of, well John Henry Bonham. And I liked the feel. My boy got his first name from me because that was his mother's choice, but we all called him Henry from the beginning

    Bonham contributed more to Zeppelin than just his playing, Bonham was also responsible for bringing along a friend whom Jimmy wasn't familiar with--at Bonham's word. Young kid by the name of Robert Plant.

    In 1980 I was 11 years old. My older brothers helped shape my musical interest and Led Zeppelin was definitely one of my favorites. Even at 11 years old I know and understand the impact of John Bonham’s death on Led Zeppelin as a band and what it meant on the remaining members creating new music.

    I’m 62 and listening to zeppelin while riding my Harley’s is my favorite pass time..
    Or Aerosmith, and others.. but the drums is what got me started in the 1960’s

    Everything i ever read said that Peter Grant telegraphed him 40 times, and he ignored them all.
    Ive never heard that Page just rang him up and that was that.

      So Plant was his friend and recommended him to Page. They actually went to see him play, where Page was blown away..John had promised his wife that he wouldn't run off with Plant anymore because, according to her it always led to no good...So initially Page and Grant called several times with no luck. So eventually Grant would send telegraphs, a common way of communicating in England then...I believe that eventually Plant and Page showed up at his house and convinced him to come aboard...after the 1st session which started off at Pages house, " Train Kept a Rollin" "they were all in shock on how good they sounded " john Paul Jones....

    I was 18 years old when Bonham died, I was still reeling from that then about 3 months later, John Lennon was murdered. I was one devastated teenager.

    What they didn't say was, Page had seen Robert Plant singing and called John Paul Jones to go see Plant singing with his band (Band of Joy) that included John Bonham on drums. Page wanted Plant to sing with them, but Plant said he would do it, only if his friend John Bonham could come along. They did need a drummer, so, from there, it's history.

    He was the best that’s for sure. I remember hearing him for the first time he just blew me away. Nobody could have taken his place in the band he was still influential, but I wouldn’t change the whole band dynamic. He’s the man.

      I've always included Keith Moon as among the best as well, there's a lot of wild and crazy stories about Keith, but my favorite is how when he auditioned to join the Who, Pete Townsend etcetera were impressed when after he setup up his kit he tied a length of rope around the whole thing!

There are so many different aspects to consider that whenever you start comparing one-to-one, it invariably ends up being an apples-to-oranges thing. Drummer A does some things so well, and drummer b does other things very well - and when you add them all up, you can't really come up with a definitive statement as to who's better. And a drummer who's just great in one band can be just absolutely wrong for another band, et cetera, et cetera...
