God bless you for this video. I am getting ready to put some turf in for my dog, and this was helpful

A good demonstration of how sharp sand and polypropylene weed membrane can cause issues with urine smell regardless of the type of grass used on top.
Glad it shows that PU-backed artificial isn't a magic cure for dogs if the base isn't right. A free-draining base will help both PU and SBR latex backed equally.
Using a knitted artificial grass with superior drainage will be even better.
Have you seen our unique knitted Lux Pawrous Canine Grass with 100 times faster drainage than PU-backed grass? Would love to know what you think

Would there be a reason to do drain rock and sand on top of the drain rock? Would you put a weed membrane at all with drain rock?

Seriously? The demonstration that she showed us doesn't even give you a HINT??
With the first example's setup, starting from the bottom to the top, you have the firm ground garden soil, a fairly thick layer of sand, a weed mesh, and then the artificial pet grass. She showed that when an animal urinates on this design, the urine gets caught along the layers of the setup rather than just going straight through to the ground soil. It first gets caught up in the weed mesh layer because the mesh does not allow liquid to go through it very quickly at all and you have more liquid coming into the layer in that moment than liquid going through the mesh to the next layer. Because of this, the weight of the urine starts to create a divit or bowl like area where the animal has urinated and this can cause the urine to then run along the area of the mesh and pool wherever it levels out at. If this happens and the urine dries up before having a chance to leak through, this alone can cause an odor to start over time the more it happens. The urine that DOES get through the mesh goes into the sand but the sand is absorbent so instead of allowing the urine to flow through it quickly and reach the ground soil, it will start to absorb the urine and that can start to make a wider area of moist sand under the grass. The sand will then dry and, just like with the urine caught in the mesh layer, an odor will start and become worse over time. Common sense would tell us that a setup that only has one of these layers and not both would definitely be more beneficial than this setup where the urine gets caught up within 2 layers rather than 1, but obviously, anyone would rather have a setup where this doesn't happen at all.
The second example's setup, starting from the bottom to the top, there is the firm ground garden soil, a fairly thick clean rock layer, and then the artificial pet grass. The demonstration shows us that wherever the animal urinates, the urine quickly goes through the drainage holes in the artificial grass and directly to the clean rock layer where it quickly runs over all the rocks directly in its path, all the way down to the ground soil layer. The clean rock is NOT absorbent so there is not a problem of it soaking into the rock and staying there and causing odor
Because the rock is there, it makes it to where the urine is not just popping in one small area on the soil level but it is being dispersed throughout a small area not much bigger than a 50 cent piece. This makes it to where the soil can handle the urine a lot easier and dry a lot easier as well as when it rains or you wash the grass, the water and/or deodorizer has an easier time at doing so rather than there being just concentrated areas of urine deep into the ground soil in different areas of the lawn over time. It also helps when liquid is presented in other forms besides pets urinating, like rain water, and regular maintenance cleaning of the grass. Since the water and cleaning solutions can escape the grass and get down to the ground soil easily, and not get caught up in the layers, these liquids won't poop in different areas or be absorbed by sand and have the problem that by the time it dries up, the liquid was already starting to go bad and now that it is dry has created mold and/or mildew. Both of these also create an odor that worsens over time.
I realize that I have explained it in depth but, truly, common sense really should have told you that the better of the 2 designs would be the clean rock setup because who WANTS or is OKAY with urine pooling in any area of your home and lawn and creating not only a disgusting and terrible odor but also causing the areas to be super unsanitary for you and your pets?

Still no wiser. In the sand version you are pouring it slowly and spreading it out , not pouring it in the same place and the stone version you pour it quickly and it's concentrated in same place??

@@3dmikec88 Did their use of actual pee do anything to tarnish the demonstration? Can you smell the pee? Are you touching the pee? If your answer is "no" to these questions, the use of pee is irrelevant.
