This was great. You always do a great job of talking through what your doing, so this just seems like a more detailed 'how to' than you might normally do. I think this is a great resource for anyone looking to do artificial grass.
Even though I don't want artificial grass, this was an excellent tutorial. Well done for breaking it down and demonstrating it. You did a lot of work for this video.
Love this format. Probably not sustainable for everything you do, but the artificial turf was the perfect subject. Really helpful... just wish I had this 3 years ago when I did my turf!!!
Michael, turf looks great. Tex looks happy with his green lawn. Good job, your expertise fixing up the warehouse is incredible turning it into a beautiful home.
💞Aunt Bernie💕
I honestly like this tutorial style you've got going on. Excellent build as always!
Just to add to the seam part of the video, the best option is really to use a scallop/wave template to cut corresponding wavy edges with 8"-12" between the peaks and valleys. This removes the straight line in the seam, breaking it up and making it far less noticeable to the eye.
I can see how that would give optimal results, but it seems like a lot more work to cut and tape.
Love these how to detailed videos. Learn a lot frm them. Keep up the good work and give tex an extra pet 👍
Your abandoned building has become a real house with rooftop yart. Loved seeing the transformation.
Wow. Looks so amazing. Can't wait to seer that pool! what a paradise you have created for yourself there.
Love the detail and the how to. Always learn something from the vids. Great job.
Hi Mike! You're killing it! Been enjoying since pre COVID!
Thanks Mike!
Love how it's coming together
Love the more detailed videos!! Keep up the good work. Fascinating, informative, and fun to watch. Your videos are always inspirational and motivating. Thank you!
Thank you!
@@modustrialterrible, insects and animals needs wildlife, thanks for killing the planet
More of these how-to videos that have researched beforehand and carefully tell whats right to do before teaching others. You explain it very well.
I would like to see a rain test on the mockup from your workshop as i'm wondering if the holes in the plywood can keep up or the 'grass' will flood and then drain when the rain stops.
Great job as always! thanks for showing us your entire process and your mistakes...Ciao from Italy 👋
Really good explanation on how to and lots of tips. Thank you from NZ
It's looking so good! Can't wait to see more! Teach on!!!
That was really interesting! It’s cool to see what you’ve learnt after doing a project
top class, as usual, Mike ... we learn a lot from you ... thanks 👍
Wow that's crazy. Very nice job. Keep up the great craftsmanship and hard work my friend. Keep Making. God bless.
thank you for the kind words!
Love it, gonna give it a go. Very informative Mike, thank you
It looks amazing! I highly recommend completing the perimeter fencing, with a gate for maintenance, so that your pet or people don't go wondering over to the other roof.
Yup, fence is being outsourced... Already put the initial payment down

i love simpli safe i recommend it to everyone because of you
Bravo!!! Great Job!!! Looking forward to Tex's house soon...
super useful! thanks for this detailed video
This was great. I like these how to video's along with other content.
these more detailj videos are greatly appreciated :)
I loved this. Thanks for the tutorial!
Thank you!
Wow, so great this video. Can't wait to see what you do to the other half of your roof.
cant wait for the full home tour
Fantastic video!
You are going to love the last video Alexandre Chappel made with his kitchen. 👍🏼 ❤
looks fantastic
it looks great
Thanks for sharing your experience here. Awesome video!
We installed artificial grass a few years ago, never going back to the real thing. Saves you time, low maintenance and extra room in my shed after getting rid of the mower.
👏👏👏
Love detailed how to!
Thanks Stan!
Thanks Mike for all good tips on installing artificial grass . By the way , Tex is so cute !
It looks amazing and im looking forward to that stage maybe? I’m glad you made this video. It looks like a great low maintenance product. I hate plywood in any horizontal manner exposed to weather like Massachusetts. I’m still going to say I’m concerned about the dog peeing and an odor issue on hot and humid days. Porous material and urine do not mix. The urine crystallizes into a salt and will not come out of that wood. I work in commercial structural drying.
GREAT VIDEO
I love this! It looks like the perfect solution for a rooftop. I think you still need some real greenery though. Trees and shrubs in tubs and planters. This is so gorgeous! I can’t wait to see Tex’s hangout. Will we get a video about the fence/wall installation?🌸
no its not, in europe we are banning this poluting nasty stuff
he will bring micro plast to the whole area he live in, not just his own house and garden
Thanks for sharing
I just put artificial turf from an old high school field around my pool. So cool.
I’m 2 seconds in, I just hit the like button, cos I know I’m gonna like!
That roof is looking super sharp.
Nice video. Do you know the lifespan on these types of products? Wondering about maintenance too. Thanks!
Great video! I was thinking about the seams with fake grass!
thanks much!
Thank you for the video. Very intuitive. I have a question. I plan do do it on a rubber roof. In this case, how can i secure the turf on drain tile? I guess i can't use the stapler since I don't want to break the roof? Do i always need plywood under the drain tiles?🤝
Have any plan for the other side of the terrace?
I'd love to see an update video in a couple of years, seeing how it's holding up. I guess it's totally subjective, but what does it feel like with bare feet and I watched the video. But did you allocate any spot that's designed and removable for Tex's business down the road, eg lift up a section scrub and clean once or twice a year. Any plans on retractable diy privacy screens and retractable roof shade cloth for sun and rain protection without more planning approval or gov fees haha😉
Hi Mike, awesome design! You really inspired me to creat my own rooftop deck following your approach. Question, did you have issues with the plywood rotting or mold? Please help!
I wonder what cleaning up the dog's urine would be like. Additionally, draining water or urine through normal playwood or marine playwood is not a good idea in the long run as far as urine odor builds up.
Hey man! love you stuff! What is the design software you use?
props for the effort that went into this detailed DIY. for my part, I already saw the previous install video so this i mostly skipped. maybe for a Modustrial maker 2 channel next time? or maybe not, anyways wish you lots of view on it. can't wait for the next video with the dog house!
Thanks brother! If I do more, it will probably be an every once in a while thing... I have more fun on the big creative projects 😀
This looks beautiful and as a Californian I need to find a drought resistant option.
This video was an inspiration. If you don't mind, I'd like to know the overall cost of your rooftop installation. I want to do something like this for an entire yard. Would you recommend DIY or just pay for a professional installation? If installing over dirty is a weed barrier needed?
Now... I've been around since AstroTurf made its premier at the AstroDome. I wasn't at the Dome, but I do live in Texas. I have seen several places where they had concrete and put down AstroTurf. Now, to the best of my knowledge they didn't put the under stuff down. However, in every single case, those places now have real grass. These were all outside, in Texas, in the 1960s.
I just wanna hang out on your roof so the more videos the better.
Channel sure has grown a lot.
Congrats.
Thank you!
Just a heads up, artificial turf is a great breeding ground for staph infections. Might be important to know if you suddenly start getting them.
I spray bleach on mine
Turf also has a natural way that the blades bend and rather than orienting the turf based on ease of cut you want to be sure the blades are all going the same way so you dont get weird shading on your turf once it's installed (think MLB fields how they cut the grass in specific directions and how you can see the lines because of that).
What is the maximum outdoor temperature allowed for the turf you used, before it becomes damaged by melting? It can get up to 110F here on a normal day.
Can you lay this stuff over a tpo roof?
I'm wondering if you will be installing additional railings to keep Tex on the roof, I can imagine him getting nosy overtime and wanting to explore the roof(s) adjacent to yours 😉
Also curious when we'll be able to see you fixing the wrongly installed windows out front by the way! 👀
I have been waiting for the fence to fill that gap! :)
That plywood is going to hold up to water, ice, and snow without warping or splitting??? Also, how about the staples? will they rust?
Actually, there are many places you can't install artificial grass. Most HOAs have rules that disallow artificial grass. I've read articles about people installing it and having to remove it because of their HOA requiring real grass.
I'd love to do this for my whole yard so I don't have to mow it anymore and it would always look good!
a robot mover is cheaper, no doubt..
then having to clean your garden and house for microplast in 10 years thanks to that shit..
this is a hell kind of like asbestos, in 10-20 it is posible the goverment will have to let people like this guy clean up
this is being taken out of the marked now in eu
ngl, some of those drone shots make it look like the roof is in some design program. So clean looking.
Thanks!
You have made a believer out of me. I didn't think I would like the look of the artificial turf, but I was wrong. It looks marvelous. Can't wait to see the next step.
Thank you!
Dig the OnCloud's at the end!
It looks awesome, But I would be scared to let my dog out there.
What's stopping him from jumping down to the other roof with no fence around it?
I needed this tutorial 4 years ago. 🤦♂
Pro tip: use a shop vac to hold the blades of grass you’re keeping out of the way of the knife while you cut off the excess - allows you to cut from the top while protecting the grass you’re keeping from getting cut (so you don’t have to fold back the excess and cut from the bottom). It’s more tedious, but you can also use a 10” drywall blade to hold back and protect the blades from getting cut if you want to cut from the top
Good tip!
@@modustrialkilling the planet with micro plastic
It looks amazing man! I wonder if it would be possible for you to add real grass instead or was not an option?. But it looks brilliant.
Thanks! Real grass would weigh way too much
Is this the method used for artificial soccer/football fields?
Yes, I have seen installations with Air Drain for soccer and (American) football fields. The only difference is the type of artificial turf -- its a lower blade height. But the process of installing is the same.
What do you do when the staples rust later on?
They don't rust ... You use exterior stainless steel or hot dip galvanized staples
Doesn't fake grass get quite hot during the summer?
I have not found it to be too bad....I think that recent technological developments have helped in this area.
The OG Astroturf did, but not the modern stuff.
It can but if you water it it goes ok
I think most of the heat in artificial terf is caused by the black rubber pellets that keep the turf bouncy. They're mainly used for athletic applications, so I'm guessing the stuff he's using only gets as bad as regular grass.
Yes will be burning 🔥 your dogs paws 😮
Great tips on the installation. But 1.5 to 2.5 lbs of infill per square foot? Sounds super expensive. I'm wondering what the full cost will be for the deck. Mentioned in an earlier video?
I spent about 12k in materials for the deck and yard
@@modustrial ouch, but hey it looks good bro, thanks. BTW, cool dog.
Will there be fence on the low levels between buildings so Tex won’t go over into their roof?
Looks like you didnt watch the last video lol. He was getting that measured for fitting the same railing as the side.
@@jaymitchell1181 I saw that he put a fence at the end but not the side
@@amyhartman8068 A neightbour wh does metal work was mentioned in the video. He was measuring up for the metal fence in that area.
Yup, a fence has been ordered :)
2 uses for Artificial Turf: Sports fields and Trailer Parks.
I’m assum8ng your dog will be going to the washroom on the grass so I’m curious how that works? I’m curious about the plywood under everyth8ng, doesn’t that retain urine?
Use a carpet top cutter for the best results. It's soooo much easier.
Illinois has legal grass to really tie the new deck together!😂😂
Microplastics, yo. (Same goes for all of your resin shavings.)
Long term tip, use a blower and brush, and spray light weed killer as seeds will land on it
yeah, imagine that actual plants would start growing - the horror!
Small world if I've been thinking out how to best lay these init??!!
You still have to wash it almost as often as you would have to mow it though.
rain does that for you ;)
Looks like the few buildings that are attached next to yours could be renovated !!! Someone say block party!!!
So according to this installation, if I walk on it with heals, I might punch a hole through it? Just asking for a friend.
Love the in-depth vid. However, I'm quite appalled that there is no putting green up there. Seems like a missed opportunity. Haha
Thats what we call Idaho grass!
But you shouldn't install artificial grass anywhere, as it's incredibly bad for the environment.
It has a huge carbon footprint in both its manufacture and transport. Lifespan is limited and although it can be recycled, this is not easy and can only be done at specialist plants after a specific cleaning process. It will break down and put microplastics in the environment as it ages. Instead of mowing, you are now washing and vacuuming your fake grass to keep it looking good.
Artificial grass reaches significantly greater temperatures than those reached by natural grass under the same weather conditions. Plastic lawns can overheat in hot weather, making them unusable. Real grass has a cooling effect to spaces it's in, fake grass will do the opposite.
If installed on soil, it, restricts access to the soil beneath for burrowing insects and to the ground above for soil dwellers such as worms. Soil organisms loose access to nutrients, so you end up with dead soil, causing carbon to be released back into the atmosphere. It's a dead habitat for wildlife in general.
The typical American lawn that's a lush green all year long lawn isn't much better, but at least it has some photosynthesis and the soil isn't totally dead.
People need to move to more mixed planting of various grasses and other plants, as in a meadow instead of a lawn. Keeping it long through the summer helps it cope with the summer heat and protects the soil from being baked hard. Clippings are great to mulch other plants to help them retain water too, reducing the need to water them. Much better for preventing water runoff in heavy rain events also.
If you live in the desert, you should be planting rock gardens and desert plants and not lawns while you can before the climate gets to the point that it's uninhabitable for humans due to the continued use of fossil fuels and other inaction on the causes of global warming.
yeah turf is fucking awful for pretty much everything but sports.
How about just using green concrete slabs ? :|
I am the one who would want the seam between parts of turf...
👍🏼👍🏼
I wonder how it would turn put, if one replaces the infill with chia seeds - real fake grass
Install artificial grass and add to the microplastic pollution problem. #nothankyou
How does it cope with dog poo cleanup ?? And urine smells?
It's anti microbial grass so it should be ok. Time will tell ..
That a Husky serrated utility blade I spy?
Yup
tex is getting SO big so fast
I call that shit blister matts. It can easily exceed 150 degrees F on a sunny day. You might as well play barefoot on asphalt.
I've been up there in the sun, and at least with the type of turf I have, its pretty nice. That said, you are rarely barefoot in the yard (at least, I'm not)
@@modustrial Your dog is always barefoot.
