RIP to Gorbachev. Even though some of his policies weren't successful, he still was a good man in my heart who truly tried his best to make the Soviet people happy. Plus, he also decided against the oppression and murder route that literally every leader before him went with. Good man he was.
Yesterday I was asking people at my work if they knew anything about the USSR, and no one even realized what it was. It's actually crazy how little people know about some of the most relevant history that shapes issues today.
Even more, I'm pretty sure many people at your work lived during the Cold War. So they definitely heard about the USSR and Communism. Especially in the USA.
I'll always remember Gorbi for dancing with Zangief after Zangief's victory over M. Bison to become the grand champion in the Street Fighter Tournament.
Not communist enough for some, too communist for others. Probably means he was the right guy for the job. You can't just flip an entire country's economy upside down all at once, unless you're trying to set yourself up for failure. Especially in a country as large as Russia and the Soviet satellite states - a change that massive touches every industry, every agency, and every household. You do it pieces at a time and let people adjust to the new way of life. Drop all that on people all at once and it's probably not going to end well.
That's the problem when you try to stage a military coup in a country reliant on conscripts for the bulk of its Army manpower. With all the enlisted soldiers, most of the NCOs and even some officers being conscripts, the men behind the guns you rely on for success of your coup, may realize the coup is not in their best interest, and react accordingly.
IIIRC Russia did a smooth brain move and got rid of pretty much all of their effective NCO core. Dumb fucking move tbh. NCOs are the most important part of an army.
@@ianhomerpura8937 One big problem from Chernobyl was not only was the radiation but the fact that one of the government’s first responses to the disaster was to try to control the narrative and keep a lot of the public in the dark about how bad it was or who was at fault.
