    contagious rhythm with a light well crafted beat. Each musical instrument is like a member of a family in harmonious communication, dovetailed together and wrought with meaning from each player in the group; it is far superior to electronic sound manufacture. These musicians have honed the sound of spontaneous music to perfection.

Most recently he did an article on Tuba Skinny for Syncopated Times. All are great resources. Pops is from Nottingham England; he did much of his research here on You Tube but has made several trips to New Orleans. In his mid-80's, he also still plays jazz cornet in several English bands but says he is slowing down.

    Over in the Glory Land
    James W. Acuff, pub.1906
    Lyrics
    I’ve a home prepared where the saints abide,
    Just over in the glory land;
    And I long to be by my Savior’s side,
    Just over in the glory land.
    Refrain:
    Just over in the glory land,
    I’ll join the happy angel band,
    Just over in the glory land;
    Just over in the glory land,
    There with the mighty host I’ll stand,
    Just over in the glory land.
    I am on my way to those mansions fair,
    Just over in the glory land;
    There to sing God’s praise and His glory share,
    Just over in the glory land.
    What a joyful thought that my Lord I’ll see,
    Just over in the glory land;
    And with kindred saved, there forever be,
    Just over in the glory land.
    With the blood-washed throng I will shout and sing,
    Just over in the glory land;
    Glad hosannas to Christ, the Lord and King,
    Just over in the glory land. v

      It's in the "Church Hymnal" produced by the Church of God on page 248. Also affectionately called the Red Back Hymnal . The actual title is "Just Over In the Glory Land". Oh, I long to go there to Glory Land, where everything is good, where Jesus is, where the roses never fade, where there is no more parting or anything bad. Do you (anyone) know Him, have you repented of sins and trusted Jesus as Lord ? I hope you( anyone) will today. Jesus Christ soon 2 come ! Fine playing of this wonderful old song of the Church.

      That's typical at Traditional Jazz festivals for songs which are gospel-y or parade-y. A New Orleans influence.

      John King I think that’s the point. To insure those who would attempt to pawn off this performance as their own creation. But I agree that an identifying brand more aesthetically pleasing might accomplish the same thing.

      @@super8guy Yes, a small logo in a lower corner should suffice, but I guess FCF was worried that someone would take the trouble to "photo shop" it out. I hate to see a work of art defaced, even if it is the original artist doing the defacing. On the other hand, of course, the artist can do whatever he wants with his creation.

    Can anyone explain the parasol procession? I think it is a New Orleans thing often done at funeral processions but also at weddings. It seems to have antecedents that go back to plantation days.

      think - classical music musicians. you want a visual act or slammin' music? This ain't pop, it's dixie, rag, and blues.
      It's about letting out what's inside, not puttin' on an outside.
      Mebbe you'd best to close yer peepholes, relax, n' float on da notes?
      Though, personally, considerin' the foundations of dis kinda music, I prefer how dey look, dress, and act - seems more authentic to me.

    • @postwar46
      @postwar46 4 года назад

      I think that Barnabus is floating in a great delivery, and the apparent winking is just a bi-product of his great concentration and focus on the piece being played. I have seen footage of musicians in the thirties who have similar affectations , to look upwards and pull faces etc etc. Main thing is thatr they create beautiful music for us. Bravo Barnabus

    Has this song ever been used in a second line jazz funeral procession? ..... 😕

    • @PopsCoffee
      @PopsCoffee 4 года назад +11

      Yes. By the way, it was composed (originally called 'Just Over in the Glory-Land') by James W. Acuff (music) and Emmett S. Dean (words) in 1906 and became popular with jazz bands after it was recorded in a great seminal session by Sam Morgan's Jazz Band in Werlein's Music Store, Canal Street, New Orleans on April 14, 1927. It's a favourite with musicians because it's a good tune and uses very few chords! When played in the key of A flat, as it usually is (including here by Tuba Skinny), it uses the chord of Ab major for most bars, with just an occasional Eb7 and Db.
