Zidane and Garnet is one of my favorite couples. The game does a spectacular job at showing them falling for eachother. Their relationship progresses naturally and they have more and more chemistry as the story unfolds. Unlike the situation with Squall and Rinoa..
Cmako lol I thought Sakaguchi wrote Zidane and garnet to show kitase how it's done. Zidane even has a sudden change of heart in the beginning of disc 3 like squall does with rinoa at the beginning of ff8 disc 3. But ff9 doesn't feel like it comes out of nowhere with it and their relationship is built up much better even though ff9 has more moving parts and doesn't simply focus on Zidane and garnet. Yea, ff died to me when Sakaguchi left.
@@alanlee67 You are referring to the part where he was being depressed due to Garnet became the queen, right? I think in this case, is less of a change of heart and more him trying to convince himself he will never meet her again as a way to cope. On the contrary, Squall is shown being completely uninterested in Rinoa, until she gets into a coma, where he becomes "muh Rinoa" all of a sudden. Funny how they sort of marketed FFVIII as a love story and all that.....which ended up being the strong point of IX. I agree, Sakaguchi knew what he was doing, it is not the same without him.
I'm late to the party here but I love the low-key relationship of Fran and Balthier in FF12. It's very subtle but you can see how much they care about each other in their little actions and exchanges throughout the story. It's not blatant or overdone and feels very genuine. Another I haven't seen mentioned in the comments is Lenneth/Platina and Lucian from Valkyrie Profile. Something about tragic romance that comes full circle is very satisfying.
Outstanding list. One thing I always appreciated about Cecil and Rosa is that they were already in a mature, adult relationship from the start. Spare me the cliche'd stories of teen angst and games of hard to get. It's something we just don't see very often in these kinds of games and, while I can understand why, that's just weirdly one of the things I love most about these characters.
This may be terrible but I really would have to go with Tidus and Yuma. Even if only for the scene in the water. The overburdened heroine and the happy go lucky blitzball be player makes my heart swell. Oh, and everyone saying Sylvando and Dave are totally spot on. Love those two.
@@Paul_McSeol I love it how the entire game Lulu berates Wakka for trying to metaphorically replace Chapu with Tidus....when she replaced Chapu with his brother. Lulu is a giant hypocrite, she stone-faced for the entire game trying to get Yuna to Zanarkand as soon as possible but when yunalesca tells everybody what the final aeon is all of a sudden she's like shocked Pikachu face because she knows that she's the closest to Yuna and if Yuna did perform the final summoning Lulu would have ended up as the final aeon.

My favorite couple has to be Lufia and the Hero from Lufia 1. SPOILER ALERT. At the end of the game, Lufia comes to her senses and sacrifices herself for the greater good. The hero, once teleported to safety, is so distraught by the loss of Lufia. Not all who wander are lost, but he is so lost in that moment that he is forced to wander, attempting to run away from his pain. A year later, to honor her memory he visits a town with the flowers that she enjoyed only to find that she is alive but suffering from amnesia. The hero is in awe, while Lufia feels an instant connection to her soulmate. Beautiful simplicity. I get choked up watching the ending every time. Hits hard
Tidus and Yuna hit the top of my list. The game's love story does have it's problems, but I like how they develop together. I'm also a sucker for a decent tragic story and I appreciate that the game keeps the whole concept of sacrifice instead of finding a half-assed way around it just to give everyone a happy ending (fuck you FFX-2).
I was hoping to see Elly and Fei high on the list and I wasn’t disappointed. I haven’t played Xenogears myself yet, but I grew to love the characters from the different playthroughs and videos I’ve seen of the game.
I have to say Hiro and Lucia from Lunar Eternal Blue Complete was worth it especially how all the story ties together especially all the way to the end.
Shulk and Fiora is an extremely strong pairing. It's ultimately headcanon who Rex ends up with, but implied it's something poly with Pyra and Mythra... but Rex-Nia is also a great pairing if Rex eventually realizes how bland of characters Pyra and Mythra are and friendzones them.
At least with Rex and Nia, we get a small glimps into their true feelings during an after battle conversation between blade Nia and Rex... Rex implies that he has been thinking more about what she said, and judging from his awkward tone, he is fully aware of what she was saying... Her response is worded in a way that implies that she is very happy he thought about it, but that it's a conversation best saved for when they can have it in private. And if the new title screen when you beat the game is any indication, they did eventually have that conversation!

A gay couple that I really enjoy is of Jun Kurosu and Tatsuya Suou in Persona 2 Innocent Sin. It's optional and pretty understated but it's there and really cute! Love the video!
As a long time fan of this channel, I am NOT surprised David didn't include Crono & Marle and Squall & Rinoa. My favorite is Chaz and Rika from Phantasy Star IV, also my favorite game.
Incredibly great choice with Estelle and Joshua. Such a well done romance and relationship, and their addition with Renne adding to their family was amazing. I love everything about them.
Definitely love Lloyd and Colette as a couple. They’re just so goofy and ditzy/klutzy, but they’re so happy together. They’re just pure light. The first time my roommate and I played Symphonia, we were hooked. We stayed up late playing and got to Flanoir at like 2 in the morning. We got to that scene where your love interest shows up and my roommate was like “what happens when you tell them no?” We did that with all three and got Kratos. When Kratos says “Lloyd…” in that certain way, we started howling with laughter, just at the way the line was delivered. ToS is such a great game.
I'm such a sucker for romance in RPGs , that I can overlook many flaws and endure many hardships so long as there's a wholesome couple in all of it . I would love to see a similar list of ten more couples
I agree that Estelle and Joshua are a fantastic couple but I love Olivier and Schera even more. I cheered so hard during the ending of the last Cold Steel game. Elly and Fei are great, yes. They actually made me cry. But my all time favorite couple is Sorey and Mikleo from Tales of Zestiria. I'm not sure if it is supposed to be implied in canon or not but in any case, I just love these two so much.
My top pick would be Tidus and Yuna, as I loved the way their stories played out in a way that felt natural. I do love Maxim and Selan though. I would also have added Hero and Lufia to this list, as their relationship was developed remarkably well for its time. On the villain side of things, I've always had a soft spot for Alan and Cerl from Breath of Fire.
Welkin and Alicia in Valkyria Chronicles was a good slow burn through the story that ends with them getting married and opening a food truck. life goals.
Cecil and Rosa were my first jrpg couple. Alex and Luna were my second jrpg couple I was introduced to through my best friend. At times, I wish I had that connection with someone else who felt the same way I do, but that's wishful thinking on my part. Have a great night, David.

Always glad to see Ys mentioned. Adol's bond with Elena in the third game always got to me. Nina didn't have a love interest in the second Breath Of Fire 2, her story was exclusively about the legacy of her wings. Although Ryu and Nina were definitely romantically inclined in the first, third and fifth games. In the fourth game she admits to loving Cray if you talk to her in camp near the end of the game. She was always simply a friend to Ryu. I've always felt Cloud and Tifa had a romantic relationship (even if Cloud was partially oblivious to his feelings or burying them), so I'm surprised it wasn't mentioned as that here. Locke and Celes had a great relationship too. Knowing your penchant for Dragon Quest I'm surprised Bianca didn't end up here. While Dragon Quest V is still a choose-your-partner game, the hero does develop a real bond with her.
Cool list David. Loved Estelle and Joshua's relationship and story. I think other great couples would be Tidus and Yuna from FFX, Sora, and Kairi from the Kingdom Hearts series, Zidane and Garnet (FFIX), and Zack/Aerith (Crisis Core). I know I'm listing a lot of Square Enix couples but there aren't a lot of specific couples in most RPG series I've played. Tidus and Yuna is my favorite FF couple.
Yuri and Alice! I adore their story. I'm playing through Shadow Hearts Covenant for the first time again in ages, and Yuri's grief over Alice is just..ugh man, hits ya right in the feels. I do like how, if you get the good ending in Shadow Hearts 2, it's implied that Yuri saves Alice, making the timeline Bad ending Shadow Hearts 1 -> Good ending shadow hearts 2 -> good ending shadow hearts 1. I just want their happy ending dang it.
I like Ryudo and Elena and Ryudo and Millenia of Grandia 2 the best. It was a very good love triangle where they all developed as characters through their connections and I genuinely loved his dynamic with them both and would have been happy to see him end up with either one. Luke and Tear of Tales of the Abyss was also amazing with how he changed and she was always there as a sort of guide and anchor to help him with things he didn't understand and keep him focused on his goal of wanting to change.
Curious to see what your ranking is with Rean and Alisa from Trails of Cold Steel series. Though I have to admit I'm leaning more towards Emma or Laura X Rean XD.
The canon ending in Shadow Hearts is the good ending, but the road to it is different than other games: Shadow Hearts Bad end, then Shadow Hearts 2 Good end (where you apparently time travel to the begining of the Shadow Hearts 1 to prevent Alice's death), then finally Shadow Hearts 1 Good ending. This makes both endings to the first game canon.
Both couples in Valkyria Chronicles 4 (Claude/Riley & Kai/Raz) really stood out for me in terms of recent JRPGs. Both relationships progressed very organically in a clear arc throughout the story and concluded beautifully (if not necessarily in a happy end).
You opened an old wound with Yuri and Alice, i cried so much, but it's good to see that at the good ending of the 2, technically it's the timeline where Alice survives, an amazing couple. And Estelle and Joshua are just amazing, I remember when I was playing Sky 2 the scene at the beach, the emotional dialogue and the music, oh boy, the music, the whereabouts of hope, I cried like a baby, seeing their journey, seeing everything they had to pass to get to that moment really pay off, the ending too! They were just acepting death together and I didn't feel bad! And of course at the end of Zero no Kiseki when Estelle cried, I literally cried with her, Renne has a really ugly story and just seeing her finally find a home with Estelle and Joshua made me cry
As for Tia, I've been shipping her with Dekar since the SNES days because I felt like they had some good chemistry before she took off. For all of its flaws, the Lufia DS remake finally bringing the two of them together was not one of them.
I like Joker and Ann from Persona 5. I know Persona 5, like its predecessors, lets you choose whoever you want, but I feel like Ann just clicked with Joker the most out of the Phantom Thief girls. Her arc about being a better model, and everything regarding her friendship with Shiho touched me, and honestly the scene where she spills her guts to Joker about her predicament with Kamoshida compelled me to go with her. I beat the game twice with her as my love interest and I don't regret it one bit.
Totally agree with your #1 pick. Estelle and Joshua are such a great couple. As for a more controversial pick, as they’re not really a couple and thus not eligible for this list, I still don’t think I’ve ever seen a threesome slot together so well as with Vyse, Aika, and Fina from Skies of Arcadia. Not just because both girls love the guy and accept the other without jealousy, but I could honestly see the girls being willing to hook up with each other if Vyse wasn’t there. They all love each other rather than it just being a guy and his harem.
Notably, Aika and Fina ARE both jealous when some one outside the trio flirts with Vyse, but explicitly not jealous of each other. They're also comfortable with waking up in the same bed in a romantically-decorated room.
Great idea for a video and nicely executed David. I'm glad that Estelle and Joshua got the number one spot. The XSeed localization of Trails in the Sky is so excellent at making Estelle and Joshua into likable, deep and multi-faceted characters. You can't help but root for them as they are portrayed. I'd like to recommend 2B and 9S from Nier: Automata as one of the best JRPG couples as well.
Justin and feena from grandia would of been on there for me. The way they grow from justin idolizing her to an a tual couple is so great. Plus they have like 10 kids at the end
I haven't played a lot of the games that you mention in your videos, simply because I went from Snes to only a miniscule amount of games on the N64 and then to PC for like 20 years or so, but I still vividly remember the shock that I felt when Maxim and Selan actually died at the end.

Is Yuri going back into time to the moment he got onto the train in the beginning of the first game, with the knowledge to save Alice. So the good ending is the canon, so thanks travel time. One of my favorite from recent years are Tiz and Agnes from Bravely Default. They get to know each other and have cute interactions during the game and SPOILERS it’s a tragic end during the first game but the ending on Bravely Second is adorable when Agnes renounces her duties as church leader and tells Tiz that she wanna marry him. Plus Tiz song is called You are my hope, in reference of Agnes giving him purpose after the events of the beginning of BD

Ryu x Nina are at their best in the 3rd game since they met as kids when Ryu was still very emotionally vulnerable. When they part, Nina grows out of her own naivete and eventually acts to arrest the criminals who ruined her beau's life and chased them for a ridiculous amount of time. More than any other party member, she believes you are good no matter what a lying Goddess or the brood's power might suggest to her. I also like Tidus and Yuna. He's literally a magic pixie dream BOY who asks the right questions to get everyone else asking about the truth of Yevon.
Cloud is sadly a choose your girl scenario, with Aerith and Tifa having plenty of supporters each. That said, Zidane and Garnet deserved a spot. I like to think of the post game here, where he will essentially be her canary due to the prince consort thing.

Most of the fanbase by now accepts the canon answer (because it actually makes sense)the people that don't are a minority. And yes, I've actually been on FF message boards and communities and that was the general consensus. The people who were in denial of it tended to be those who never played the original FFVII funnily enough.

Definitely love Lloyd and Colette as a couple. They’re just so goofy and ditzy/klutzy, but they’re so happy together. They’re just pure light. The first time my roommate and I played Symphonia, we were hooked. We stayed up late playing and got to Flanoir at like 2 in the morning. We got to that scene where your love interest shows up and my roommate was like “what happens when you tell them no?” We did that with all three and got Kratos. When Kratos says “Lloyd…” in that certain way, we started howling with laughter, just at the way the line was delivered. ToS is such a great game.

My top pick would be Tidus and Yuna, as I loved the way their stories played out in a way that felt natural. I do love Maxim and Selan though. I would also have added Hero and Lufia to this list, as their relationship was developed remarkably well for its time. On the villain side of things, I've always had a soft spot for Alan and Cerl from Breath of Fire.

Nina didn't have a love interest in the second Breath Of Fire 2, her story was exclusively about the legacy of her wings. Although Ryu and Nina were definitely romantically inclined in the first, third and fifth games.
In the fourth game she admits to loving Cray if you talk to her in camp near the end of the game. She was always simply a friend to Ryu.
I've always felt Cloud and Tifa had a romantic relationship (even if Cloud was partially oblivious to his feelings or burying them), so I'm surprised it wasn't mentioned as that here. Locke and Celes had a great relationship too.
Knowing your penchant for Dragon Quest I'm surprised Bianca didn't end up here. While Dragon Quest V is still a choose-your-partner game, the hero does develop a real bond with her.

Cool list David. Loved Estelle and Joshua's relationship and story. I think other great couples would be Tidus and Yuna from FFX, Sora, and Kairi from the Kingdom Hearts series, Zidane and Garnet (FFIX), and Zack/Aerith (Crisis Core). I know I'm listing a lot of Square Enix couples but there aren't a lot of specific couples in most RPG series I've played. Tidus and Yuna is my favorite FF couple.
Yuri and Alice! I adore their story. I'm playing through Shadow Hearts Covenant for the first time again in ages, and Yuri's grief over Alice is just..ugh man, hits ya right in the feels. I do like how, if you get the good ending in Shadow Hearts 2, it's implied that Yuri saves Alice, making the timeline Bad ending Shadow Hearts 1 -> Good ending shadow hearts 2 -> good ending shadow hearts 1. I just want their happy ending dang it.
I like Ryudo and Elena and Ryudo and Millenia of Grandia 2 the best. It was a very good love triangle where they all developed as characters through their connections and I genuinely loved his dynamic with them both and would have been happy to see him end up with either one.
Luke and Tear of Tales of the Abyss was also amazing with how he changed and she was always there as a sort of guide and anchor to help him with things he didn't understand and keep him focused on his goal of wanting to change.
Curious to see what your ranking is with Rean and Alisa from Trails of Cold Steel series. Though I have to admit I'm leaning more towards Emma or Laura X Rean XD.

The canon ending in Shadow Hearts is the good ending, but the road to it is different than other games: Shadow Hearts Bad end, then Shadow Hearts 2 Good end (where you apparently time travel to the begining of the Shadow Hearts 1 to prevent Alice's death), then finally Shadow Hearts 1 Good ending. This makes both endings to the first game canon.
Both couples in Valkyria Chronicles 4 (Claude/Riley & Kai/Raz) really stood out for me in terms of recent JRPGs. Both relationships progressed very organically in a clear arc throughout the story and concluded beautifully (if not necessarily in a happy end).
Lloyd and Colette being not only on this list, but on the damn title card feels SO validating!
You opened an old wound with Yuri and Alice, i cried so much, but it's good to see that at the good ending of the 2, technically it's the timeline where Alice survives, an amazing couple. And Estelle and Joshua are just amazing, I remember when I was playing Sky 2 the scene at the beach, the emotional dialogue and the music, oh boy, the music, the whereabouts of hope, I cried like a baby, seeing their journey, seeing everything they had to pass to get to that moment really pay off, the ending too! They were just acepting death together and I didn't feel bad! And of course at the end of Zero no Kiseki when Estelle cried, I literally cried with her, Renne has a really ugly story and just seeing her finally find a home with Estelle and Joshua made me cry
As for Tia, I've been shipping her with Dekar since the SNES days because I felt like they had some good chemistry before she took off. For all of its flaws, the Lufia DS remake finally bringing the two of them together was not one of them.
I like Joker and Ann from Persona 5. I know Persona 5, like its predecessors, lets you choose whoever you want, but I feel like Ann just clicked with Joker the most out of the Phantom Thief girls. Her arc about being a better model, and everything regarding her friendship with Shiho touched me, and honestly the scene where she spills her guts to Joker about her predicament with Kamoshida compelled me to go with her. I beat the game twice with her as my love interest and I don't regret it one bit.

As for a more controversial pick, as they’re not really a couple and thus not eligible for this list, I still don’t think I’ve ever seen a threesome slot together so well as with Vyse, Aika, and Fina from Skies of Arcadia. Not just because both girls love the guy and accept the other without jealousy, but I could honestly see the girls being willing to hook up with each other if Vyse wasn’t there. They all love each other rather than it just being a guy and his harem.
Notably, Aika and Fina ARE both jealous when some one outside the trio flirts with Vyse, but explicitly not jealous of each other.
They're also comfortable with waking up in the same bed in a romantically-decorated room.
Great idea for a video and nicely executed David. I'm glad that Estelle and Joshua got the number one spot. The XSeed localization of Trails in the Sky is so excellent at making Estelle and Joshua into likable, deep and multi-faceted characters. You can't help but root for them as they are portrayed. I'd like to recommend 2B and 9S from Nier: Automata as one of the best JRPG couples as well.

I haven't played a lot of the games that you mention in your videos, simply because I went from Snes to only a miniscule amount of games on the N64 and then to PC for like 20 years or so, but I still vividly remember the shock that I felt when Maxim and Selan actually died at the end.

One of my favorite from recent years are Tiz and Agnes from Bravely Default. They get to know each other and have cute interactions during the game and SPOILERS it’s a tragic end during the first game but the ending on Bravely Second is adorable when Agnes renounces her duties as church leader and tells Tiz that she wanna marry him.
Plus Tiz song is called You are my hope, in reference of Agnes giving him purpose after the events of the beginning of BD

Ryu x Nina are at their best in the 3rd game since they met as kids when Ryu was still very emotionally vulnerable. When they part, Nina grows out of her own naivete and eventually acts to arrest the criminals who ruined her beau's life and chased them for a ridiculous amount of time. More than any other party member, she believes you are good no matter what a lying Goddess or the brood's power might suggest to her.
I also like Tidus and Yuna. He's literally a magic pixie dream BOY who asks the right questions to get everyone else asking about the truth of Yevon.
Tia always made me sad. She’s the cute and loving hometown girlfriend who gets ditched when her man goes out into the wider world.
Cloud is sadly a choose your girl scenario, with Aerith and Tifa having plenty of supporters each. That said, Zidane and Garnet deserved a spot. I like to think of the post game here, where he will essentially be her canary due to the prince consort thing.
He actually isn't. Canonically, Cloud ends up with Tifa, this was confirmed multiple times by Square Enix and the original dev team.
