My local video game store, that's been open since the early 90s, has nothing priced so he looks up everything you're interested in. He asks for 2x ebay and pricecharting, and sometimes 3x. He does have a lot of rare games, but also a lot of filler and just a bit of everything. It's certainly quite a store. But he wanted $50 for a copy of Hannspree Ten Kate Honda for PSP, for just one example I can remember. It was sealed, but I ended up getting it brand new off ebay for $12 shipped.

I think the market for retro gaming is growing and growing due to modern day consoles and games being “mostly” style over substance. My PS4 died on me 8 months ago. Friends were pushing me to invest in a PS5, but after seeing the games out on PS5, I decided to go back to a PS3 and a SNES instead. The games are just so much more fun. And allow for a 20 minute gaming session, unlike the PS4/5 where 20 minutes barely boots the system up and download an update.
Thanks, but no thanks. As I merely mentioned, a 20 minute gaming session is all I can find time for nowadays. When games start out pricing their original new price, it’s no longer gamers but collectors buying. And there is way less collectors than gamers so retro prices out price themselves to buyers and collectors up the pricing quickly on rarer and more sought after games so it eventually out prices even its collectors go a limited few. Looking at all these retro game shops and online, the market is oversaturated at the price point the games sell for, especially when I walk in and see some categories with full shelves and others having little, shops need to start addressing supply and demand rather than market price. It will eventually even out and business savvy games shops will survive while those only init for money hopefully just close due to not being as profitable anymore.

Have said it before and I say it again, Stores are closing because opening and keeping them open is expensive. And these days when everyone and their grandmother buys digitaly they are even more expensive in order to be able to compete. Remember the days when you had to go to a gamestore to buy a game, be it console or PC? I miss those days very much. That Atari Lynx there, it was about the price I paid for mine around christmas, but then I got a Charger, the official Atari Lynx "Link Cable" an official Bag and 16 games to go with it as well.
Title says "everywhere" but it really means in america. Japanese game stores thrive, here in the UK we have many too. Sure americans come in from time to time, buy out anything they think they can flip for "a quick buck" and ruin collecting for the rest of us, but the digital only, always online mindset is strictly an american one. Physical copies are always welcome elsewhere.
I should add, I'm not a collector for the sake of hogging things up, I'm a collector who likes to play the games I buy. You should never fork out 10× the price for a "sealed" copy or from opportunistic nobodies online. PS5 and Xbox Series X scalpers learned the hard way when the consoles came back in stock, teach them that same lesson enough times and they'll stop.
I can never seem to find Rogue Trip on the ps one myself. Disc only, case only, complete. Nada. It’s not an expensive game either lol. One of the very few games I had on my ps one back in the day. One day I shall find it!

Yo, weed and video games ftw Some kid in California has to have the business smart to line that business deal up, they would profit big time, I promise, make it a shop where you can get a kick ass video game and a few joint or something and bad business will thrive, I promise, I can't do it but the idea is out there, please take this comment seriously
You can't charge those insane prices and expect rational hard working people to pay that. It Just doesn't work n today's economy especially when emulation is free. If retro gaming was actually affordable, as it once was, it would be more successful. But it's a big screw you to gamers when your getting ripped off by fellow gamers. So no. Everyone cries about staying with physical media. Yet at those prices, no one is going to pay double or more when digital sales are way cheaper with time. Physical goes up, digital comes down. We don't all have an endless cash flow. I saw physical limited games going for 40 bucks, yet the indie game digital sale price was like 4.99. Y'all high? I'm buying the 4.99 on sale version.
That’s where I’m at. I had recently rediscovered a love of my 3DS and decided to start getting some of the games I skipped out on in the past. The prices were sobering. I’m buying to play and not for resale. So it’s just nasty stuff.
Also collecting really died when published stopped including game manuals during ps3/360 era. Your just paying for plastic now. Losing that art was huge.
They're closing because most of them jack the prices up waaaay too high. Y'all are LUCKY to have the stores you have around you. The ones around me (California) have absolutely no respect for customers and don't give a shit about anything but making money. Perfect example is a Utopia game store near me selling Banjo Kazooie for 140$, and the clerk telling me they know it's only worth $20 and don't give a shit. "someone out there is stupid enough to buy it" is what I was told. Lmao local game stores are honestly a joke and should be avoided, ESPECIALLY in California. I still think the #1 people to blame for all of this are resellers, much like Retro Rick and Phoenix Resale. They're the ones buying up everything and selling it for more. Stores see this, and think they can do the same, and do. it's all a disgusting practice that NEEDS to stop, but probably never will.

I dont collect any games anymore. Stupid prices and people ruined it. The 360 was the last thing i had that i was enjoying.
Yet another banger
What can I do to get my hands on a JRPG Life sticker and/or shirt?
DM JRPGWife on Instagram 🙂
Look like a fun hunt. Japanese Sega Saturn for $35 was a deal!
I wish they would add beyond the beyond to the Playstation store. I like camelot rpgs. Golden sun was one of my favorites.
i was there great event!!
Why is Beyond the Beyond so rare.. I have a CIB copy from 20+ years ago.
It's not, we just have had ZERO luck finding one with the manual 😅
@@JRPGLife Gotcha. Do you guys ever try craigslist and facebook market place meetups for buying games? That was how I got to 1100 PS1 Games.
Awesome video. What is the name of the genesis game with the poster?
X-Men 😀
@@JRPGLife thank you for your response. Never seen that one on genesis
Should visit Luna Video games in san diego and chulvista next time your in CA
Now I have to check if my beyond the beyond has a manual
Haha right?
@@JRPGLife confirmed I actually have the manual its real lol
I literally bought beyond the beyond yesterday with the manual!!!! Do yall want me to send it to yall?
GAH, I have the X-Men game for the Genesis but no poster. Lucky you!
We were very fortunate 😀
I’ve been looking for the last 4 games now too lol can’t help it
cant wait for socal
Sane!
It HAS to show up eventually, right? RIGHT? 😅
@@JRPGLife probably after I finally give in and just buy it online lol. It’ll be cheaper and better condition too… that totally hasn’t happened to me before.
Shadow Hearts for PS2 is an awesome JRPG you should have picked up!
We have all of the PS2 RPGs already, but that one is great! 😀
@@JRPGLife awesome, one of my favorites ever, so memorable and different! 😊
Pretty sure that was the OG Lynx.
How can you not show me the vita knowing I’m going for the full set.
It's tough! We completed the full set a few years back, and they had SO MANY
@@JRPGLife they might have had something I need. I have 31 to go for the full 317 North America set. Who finishes first me or your 3rd set. I have no killers like barbie to get.
I just bought the game and manual to go with my case for byond be byond of ebay can't wait to see it complete myself
Haha awesome!
Got my hopes up, I had picked up a 3DS Barbie game last week, but it was "Puppy Rescue". lol, sorry.
Lol there are so many Barbie games 😅
Yo, weed and video games ftw
Some kid in California has to have the business smart to line that business deal up, they would profit big time, I promise, make it a shop where you can get a kick ass video game and a few joint or something and bad business will thrive, I promise, I can't do it but the idea is out there, please take this comment seriously
Seriously, 120 for a quarter of weed and some awesome video games to play, that is an awesome deal
I am not sure on the economics, but I would ask one bright guy like you to do it anyway
RETRO RESPAWN MENTIONED?????? (best game store in LA)
Prices is why. I buy to play.
Another day and hunt get those games
Plenty of Beyond the Beyond CIB on Ebay right now
But where's the fun in that?
Exactly!
Uhh 🤔 so why are we closing everywhere??? This title concerns me GUYS
Watch the video 🙂
We explain our thoughts, you will likely agree
xD
1st 😊
These stores featured in the video are both in the Los Angeles area, and their prices were very fair. 🙂
