Coming back on this video to get owners/people that used this unit, their thought on the fusion? I read a ton of people complaining about the noise this unit add to track, that is not mastering grade, we can achieve better with plugins, and the list goes on… My thought : Using it for 2 years now, and never had a single problem, I’m so in love with the sound. True the drive add some noise but to le that is not that bad tbh. And if I don’t want any noise, I use harder settings or don’t use drive at all. Not a big deal haha Eq’s are nice, not on every track but depend on mixes. HF comp is a beast and stereo imager is simple but deliver a nice sound. Mostly using it on the master chain, during mix or mastering session, with elysia xfilter and xpressor. Love this sound. I don’t really understand why so many people trash this unit… If you don’t like it, then don’t use it, it’s that simple. And to people telling it’s not mastering grade, what about we can use what we want to get a certain tone/color on out master chain? Is that wrong? New tattoo? 👀 Damn, this thing sound really great. Nice video as always! I’ll have to wait to get this one tho, it’s a little too expensive for now, but I believe this will be an amazing machine for ever so it can wait.
I’m using the SSL Fusion with a Neve Portico II Master Bus Compressor the insert... DELICIOUS The MBC also has width and space in variable EQ selectable ranges... makes an amazing sound when used together! Any thoughts on maximizing the arrangement I’m using?
The two stereo sections would most likely cause weird phase shifts, I wouldn't use them together. The MBC has the same xformer than my 542's, I rarely used the blue ones before having the Fusion, now I find myself using them if I lift the top with the violet, still use the red too but before was all the time, now it's 50%. The difference is you have them after (insert) I have them pre, so that might not work for you.
You get that transformer button to really cook if you put a comp into the insert post eq and jam the volume of the insert unit. Really adds some stink to the low end. SSL Fusion is money
Eccellent unit. I made a comparison with celestial of Acustica Audio and they sound very similar. The low frequencies on the fusion sound slightly more defined
Now you know you're going to have to do a shootout between this and the plugin version for the memes. But fr would love to see your take on it. I think it would be an epic video.
Thanks for this great video! I have a Fusion, but haven't had much of a chance to use it much yet. Now after your video, though, I'm excited to start using it with more confidence. :)
Looks great. I'm trying to decide between a Tegeler Crème, Heritage Audio Successor, and WesAudio Dione or the SSL Fusion. I'm all Hardware, Roland VS2000cd, no DAW. Suggestions?
Well, yes I can give yiou suggestions!! Did not care for the Tegeler. The Heritage Audio Successor was great. Really brought my mixes up a few levels. WesAudio did not fit my Neve R10, and I never tried the Fusion. I have an AudioScape Bus Comp SSL Compressor clone which is great!
Had to rewind like a dozen times cause I just started vibing out to the Nova song. What an awesome unit. Definitely moved it to the top of my "Gear Needs" list.
Just got it! Its awesome, thanks for the great review. I’m thinking to have the following 2bus setup: Fusion Drive - send to Hyperion - Hyperion into Dione - return to Fusion Violet EQ - Fusion Space. Would that make sense you think or better to just have Dione linked?
Def Dione before Hyperion if you have to pick one or the other, yiu shouldn't really need a full parametric on your 2bus anyway, Hyperion is more a clean mastering eq
@@mixbustv yeah I meant Hyperion going into Dione. Parametric before compressor and after use violet for pultec-style like. I thought you had drawmer 1974 on your mixbus? Am I wrong?
It's a great box for the price, I personally like other things if you want the SSL compression, but that one also has a limited pultec style eq which is useful. If you want an all in one that can be a good choice
With two WA-73 EQs, a Heritage Audio Successor followed by a Warm Audio Bus Comp and last but not least an Elysien Filter the Fusion seems to be "redundant", doesn't it? I'd really appreciate to get your opinions... Thank you
Why? The Fusion is not a compressor so doesn't matter if you have those already, the Warm being lower quality than both Heritage and SSL.I love Elysia, I have the Xpressor myself but the filter has low headroom if you use it on the 2bus you could have hard time reaching the right level you need to hit the other units without having that distorting. But to answer your question more precisely, the Fusion is a saturation, stereo manipulation, eq and HF limiter with an additional transformer, none of what you have replace or it's redundant with this
Thanks for the video. I really liked the demo section and it was really useful to see how you work. Is there a chance you could look into using the Elektron Analog Heat within a mastering chain? I know it's obviously not the best or highest end analog gear but could have some appeal as it's a little more affordable. Don't worry if not and thanks for the video anyway
Have you tried the Acustica Audio Celestial? It’s a plug-in based on the fusion. It would be interesting to hear your thoughts on how it compares to the real deal :) Awesome review as always!
I don't use the 74 in insert in the fusion, I have HG2, Wes Mastering compressor, SPL PQ, Spacecraft and Symph EQ in insert usually but I can put wharever I want there, MAAG, 5500, any of my compressors etc..
Er.. I already have the hardware lol I also do most of the premiere videos for Acustica :D but sure, it's a good plugin. Not like the hw, but good enoguh
My Unit is on its way and cant wait! Awesome vid thanks! The neve’s 542 just arrived today. I am planning to Buy Dione and Rhea soon to, which would you choose for insert? I want to use dione for light MB compression and Rhea for adding weight………. Any thoughts? Cheers you all
You want to use both on the 2bus? That's a bit overkill. Dione is punchier, takes away a bit of top end, classic SSL glue. Rhea is more open both top end and stereo image, less punchy, softer, great for mastering actually just tapping it. It depends how much GR you do on the 2bus, they're both viable. I would not use them both on the 2bus at the same time, makes little sense.
@@mixbustv Thanks for your reply! No i will not use them both at the same time at 2bus. I just want to have the options available and depends on genre too. Most cases its for mastering so i’ll stick with my plan to use Rhea as insert for the Fusion for Mastering, so if for a given track a more ssl sound is needed i will use Dione and bypass Rhea but still can use the Fusion. Cheers man
@@mixbustv You really have a nice setup. You put out really good tutorials. I purchased your newest tutorial from pro mix academy. Great tutorial 👌 👍 👏 😀
Many people these days just take pics of the settings. They're plugins (ex; snapshot) that allow you to upload a pic and leave it inserted on your track for reference.
can you also do a comparison with the SPL Big and the imager of the SSL Fusion? I'm thinking of buying the ssl fusion or the SPL Big and then separate Eq. or do you have other suggestions?
I don't have the SPL big, tell SPL you want to see it on the channel. Fusion worst module is the eq, but you'd be missing the best parts of it even if you buy an eq and the big
Question - I can afford to save up and get either a Fusion or a Dione but not both. Fusion with software SSL G Bus or Dione with software saturation etc?
Great review! One question - on which position of the mix bus chain you would insert the SSL Fusion itself? Before a mastering software like Ozon 9 or after and then a limiter again? What are your experiences?
Real nice. Mine is coming on Wednesday I can’t wait. Would you use this solely on a 2 bus with maybe a vca compressor before it? I think that’s how I plan to use it for the mixbus
I would really like to hear ssl fusion and same mix with fab filter mb and some other high quality plugins/transformer simulations added. Other way it is not point to compare. You know, I really can do same effect with couple of plugins. Im big hardware fan, but without proper comparision namely with plugins we have only one side. So far I can only trust you that is better :) btw Im using ssl plugins which are great.
What makes no sense is compare a multiband compressor plugin and some other non better specified ones to a high end unit. No you won't get the same. This subject is so old. And it goes both ways, some people throw money at hardware that's not worth half the price then they swear it changed their life (this is not the case) those are the words of someone who has already spent the money, and then some never worked with hardware and can't afford it so they want to convince themselves they can get the same results with few Plugins. While people who own both and do this for s living agree, unanimously, that sure you can mix with plugins, and also it's not the same as hw and you won't get the same results.
SB is not really a good comparison with the fusion, fusion has a lot more things, it is better than SB for 2bus, 76 is not for 2bus and you will never need that much saturation on it.
@@DJURBANBG you have enough saturation options on the fusion to need the SB before it, but sure, most likely you'd use either the SB without the drive or the xformer on the fusion or the fusion without sb.
@@mixbustv What if you use 76 only for spreading and mono without the saturation, would it be good enough as a stereo editor for the 2bus , or you think stereo section of the Fusion is enough ? Sorry but i have to make decisions and thank you very much again :)
Love it, it has been sitting on my 2bus since day 1 and the routing options + the M/S insert is really cool, turns my SPL PQ into mid side if I need it
@mixbustv Question! How would you recommend using the FUSION with 2 portico ii channels for 2-bus work? Which unit first in the chain? I only have 4 outs on my audient id44 (2 go to monitors) so I was thinking of coming out through 3-4 to the FUSION first and then both of the porticos. Would it be better to have the porticos first and then the FUSION or even have the porticos come in through the FUSION's insert? Your wisdom would be appreciated.
Soooo... where is the link to this new course, Mixing and Mastering Modern Rock? It's not on the site with his other two courses. I'm actually quite interested in it.
I have the plugin version of this from acoustica audio. I seen the comparison. And it sounds pretty close to the unit. My only issue with it is that it eats my CPU alive
Great video man, nice one,! The Fusion seems like a similar idea to Louder than Liftoff's Silver Bullet, which I know you've reviewed in the past. How does it compare and do you have a favourite?
Well I have this one that should tell you my preference. SB is great, but it's a dual preamp color, and more towards tracking if you ask me. It doesn't have the stereo section and I personally love the SSL color. Also doesn't have the HF limiter which is another big part of this.
May I ask your personal opinion on the Neve MBP? i know they two are different things but any thoughts on these two if you'd have to compare the two? thanks.
I replied this before, the MBP is a good unit, Fusion is superior for me, but aside the obvious different functions, it boils down to if you want a "all in one machine" (MBP) or you want to build your chain with let's say a dedicate 2bus compressor and and eq (or more) to insert in the fusion. In that case, the compressor part of the MBP (which I'm not a fan of) would become redundant
i've had it for a while but done my first official mix then master with ME version today, it really woke the track up, the drive section is the best AA has sampled, i'd like to see crimson have this quality also. always ignored the eq thinking it was same old ssl but now I know its a new breed od ssl eq i'm going to experiment more
I'd like the same thing, but don't think he'll do it. Also, the celestial is a model of a "heavily modded" fusion. It doesn't even have the same EQ frequencies (I checked). So I don't see this guy taking time to match sounds and stuff... no way
Great review, mine's arriving in 1 day. The manual states the transformer doesn't need to be driven as the winding already results in the harmonics. Did you really hear much difference driving it with more input?
Sounds brillliant. How do you see the THD from Dione in relation to the fusion drive? Is it complementary or should you use one or the other you think?
The THD (on the big brother, I don't use the Dione on the 2bus anymore) is a no brainier, it always make things better, not the same for the drive, that's a hit or miss. Rarely you'll use both, but you'll always use the thd, sometimes the drive
MixbusTv wow I was about to order the fusion as a 2bus ‘solution’. In all reviews I see the Drive is considered the main feature. Dione is on its way so I’m wondering if the fusion is still worth the money in your opinion, considering Diones THD? I have drawmers 1974 & 1978 and Prometheus is also on its way. I have to be budget-aware so do you think there are better 2bus processors for me in my setup than ssl fusion?

What does he mean by "thats a 2-Bus" compressor ? I am a newbie that learned mix/master on internet so I need insights please
2 bus is the same as mix bus
As always, video well done! Im intrested in getting one now.
Hey David, did you compare the Fusion to the plugin-emulation from Acustica Audio? They call it Celestial.
can you also do a comparison with the SPL Big and the imager of the SSL Fusion? I'm thinking of buying the ssl fusion or the SPL Big and then separate Eq. or do you have other suggestions?
I don't have the SPL big, tell SPL you want to see it on the channel. Fusion worst module is the eq, but you'd be missing the best parts of it even if you buy an eq and the big
@@mixbustv I'll tell them! tnx for your feedback
Question - I can afford to save up and get either a Fusion or a Dione but not both. Fusion with software SSL G Bus or Dione with software saturation etc?
amazing video. What desk are you using? I have been looking for a similar desk but can't find one. Thanks
Modson Furniture
Great review! One question - on which position of the mix bus chain you would insert the SSL Fusion itself?
Before a mastering software like Ozon 9 or after and then a limiter again? What are your experiences?
hopefully i can afford one soon!
abundance mindset 🙏
Real nice. Mine is coming on Wednesday I can’t wait. Would you use this solely on a 2 bus with maybe a vca compressor before it? I think that’s how I plan to use it for the mixbus
Watch the unboxing vid, I explain my routing for the 2bus
Where can I get No Snshine?
PS - found it: open.spotify.com/album/05iYIlCIODHGscKmE8pIWs?si=BNPk6U9HRW698yC6N12V7A
I would really like to hear ssl fusion and same mix with fab filter mb and some other high quality plugins/transformer simulations added.
Hey great vid as always, what are the LED meters on top of your desk? they look awesome!, I saw Richard Devine with these also?
David , Would you consider a 2 bus chain of Silver Bullet ► SSL Fusion , better than Silver Bullet ► Drawmer 76 ► Drawmer 74 .. ? Thanks :)
SB is not really a good comparison with the fusion, fusion has a lot more things, it is better than SB for 2bus, 76 is not for 2bus and you will never need that much saturation on it.
@@mixbustv i was talking about SB and after that Fusion in a chain, but thank you :)
I’m glad when I have to only watch 1 video to learn what I need.
SSL fusion or HA successor or will I need both eventually?
Thanks!!
Where did you get those lights on your desk?
how do you use it along side the Neve 542? do you use both transformers from the neve and fusion or whatever subjective to the music?
how do you still feel about the fusion, ive been wanting to reduce that amount of plugins on the 2 buss, maybe pairing it with a dione
You should try it on individual tracks , just curios ! Thnx for the videos David
Between the ssl fusion and Neve tape emulator, which one?
Thank you very much for an important matter for music!
This was a great demo!
I don’t think I’m ready for this yet lol
But damn!!!
Love It!!!
Soooo... where is the link to this new course, Mixing and Mastering Modern Rock? It's not on the site with his other two courses. I'm actually quite interested in it.
it was missing in the description, here: bit.ly/3e58LUh
@@mixbustv Thank you, good sir!
Can you recommend a stereo EQ to hit midrange instruments before the fusion as a front end chain?
Heritage strip
MixbusTv 👍
What would you recommend for EDM style this or the Louder than lift off silver bullet ?
This
@@mixbustv Thank you!
@@mixbustv Cheers David, good to know, all the best bud.
Has anyone tried the celestial by acoustica audio?
Great plug version of this
Use it about 90% of the time
I’ve used it once and it’s all right. I love Acustica Audio Cream 2
Yes! Its. Awesome
i've had it for a while but done my first official mix then master with ME version today, it really woke the track up, the drive section is the best AA has sampled, i'd like to see crimson have this quality also. always ignored the eq thinking it was same old ssl but now I know its a new breed od ssl eq i'm going to experiment more
What (furniture) desk model is that please?
Modson furniture
David would you say the vintage drive is just good for it's sound or is it also good at limiting peaks at the same time?
Nope
@@mixbustv Great thanks
Nice video. Would you mind comparing it to acustica audios celestial (their version of the same unit)
No not really
@@mixbustv I just got mine and increasing the input does distort the transformer so not sure why the manual says that.
