At the start of every video you say “So if you’re interested in this bike, stick around and stay tuned.” I stay even when I’m not interested in the bike 😅 keep up the good work! Cheers from Down Under 🇦🇺
Ha, the RUclips video I watched before this was Australian. Isn't broadband wonderful, we can all watch stuff from the other side of the planet. Light rain here in Scotland.
Hey Mr Flyer, i bought one of these 2020 bikes a few weeks ago and have done around 3000 miles so far. The bikes great, no question, but of course will never suit everyone. I love the looks and power, its a true sports bike. The power and handling are easily capable of very enthusiastic progress where circumstances allow. I have done 450 mile days on this bike in England and in Europe and find the seat does get better with miles. One word of warning ... with a pillion on the back, the auto preload jacks the rear suspension up and the side stand gets even shorter. I don't think its perfect, but in truth, what is? You pays your money and takes your choice! Enjoy the bike. Great reviews, keep up the good work.
i actually like that intrument cluster with the separate satnav in that stacked config, makes things so easy to see when they are all in the centre line.
I had a test ride booked on one of these followed by a the R1250GSA, after 70mins of riding I had a numb back side and pins and needles in my hands. The GSA caused me no problems at all. If you are in the market for one of these make sure you get a long test ride to check it out. Another great review 👍👍👍👍
I just traded my Multi 950s in on a new one. They let me take their demo out for a 400 mile weekend (I'm a good customer) So comfy. No issues. The seat takes some getting used to, but man, its ride all day magic carpet ride. I love it..
So weird seeing you riding down the roads I ride on TMF, same when you did the bike Vs plane to white Waltham, I was trying to shout directions to Chopsy. Great review as always dude
Hard to argue with that. I ride a Triumph, but here in America I'd certainly find parts and service easier to find if I rode one of the 4 big Asian bikes. Plus, every Kawasaki I've ever owned was incredibly dependable. Having said that, my T120 has been flawless so far, but I just don't have that feeling of confidence and reliability that the Japanese bikes give.
Here here, my next bike for sure! And by the time I save up the cash for it, hopefully a nice, little used 2020 or 2021 model will turn up for a good price.👍
I had one of the first into the country in 2015 I hated the buzz at cruising speed then and sold it after only 6 months, I can't believe BMW still haven't cured it. Apart from that I loved it but couldn't live with that annoying vibe. Nice video again Terry
As usual, i loved the video 👍 Just 3 weeks ago i've tested this bike. As a long term owner of Honda CB1300S, i wondered how Germans built in-line 4 engine, which is japanese speciality. Well, not to good... My 2008 Honda engine is much smoother. Vibrations were one of the main 3 reasons i finished the test ride after just 40 mins. My bottom and right hand were devastated by buzzing. The amount of power is cery descent, but power is not everything. Another thing, the seat. Really exclusive as it should be in a premium bike. BMW, to give the customer a premium feeling, made the seat of a 100yrs old oak wood. Touring on it? If 0,5 an hour is "touring", fine. More than this would be a torture. 3 thing i didn't like is the chassis. Although it is top, it does not follow the engine's performance. Good things: breaks, sound, beauty and looking expensive. It is not a great sports bike, not a touring bike becsuse of lack of comfort...I have no idea why would i buy it.
Overtaking when there are driveways on the right has me thinking some dope is going to come out looking right because they think they don't have to look left to turn left. Be safe TMF👍And good video as always 🙂
That's sound advice, and not just for motorbikes. Back in the day (and I wasn't there at the time) a school friend overtook in just that scenario. He and his GF were in a car, overtook another car, and a lorry pulled out from the right with the driver looking right. Head-on collision, both friend and GF died at the scene. The aftermath was far-reaching, as you can imagine, and it was a harsh lesson that's been imprinted on my brain ever since. I was 18 at the time, as were they. Don't risk it. But top vid again TMF, I love the sports/adventure nature of this bike, definitely interested.
“We’ll stick her on the back”. Would love to see Mrs Flyers reaction to that statement :). Great review as usual, looking forward to the next one. Many thanks 🙏
A Beemerphile buddy of mine bought an XR, rode it for less than 1000 kilometers, hated it and sold it before I could even twist its throttle. Thing is, among other BMW’s, he rides a fully appointed S1000RR (his second) - which he loves. Go figure! The cautionary tale here is that the XR may be an acquired taste, even for Beemerphiles. Perhaps more of a niche bike than a nice bike?
I really enjoyed that you were quite critical right out of the gate on this one. Made me smile. Looking forward to the other videos on this on, currently thinking a toss up between this, the bmw r1250rs or .... something else that’s got decent weather protection, and will be fun and progressive to ride. Also I am 5’10” with a 30” leg and I found the bike really tall..... what a difference 2” makes down stairs... Fnar fnar
Well, I've got a 29 leg and can't, in any way, get my feet down. I can tiptoe one side, but if I stopped on a slope or put my foot in a pothole (which has had me off in the past) I'd be straight on the deck. I was amazed when I first sat on the XR how high and awkward the bike was. I found the GS lower and easier, and that's saying something!
I’m surprised to hear about the stand over prob, I’m 31(ish) inside leg and found it ok... was the seat set ok for you? Shame really, because I loved riding the bike.
@@36moto I was just going from bike to bike in the showroom. I was surprised at how manageable the GS felt, as I'm quite short, but was amazed at how bad the XR was. Just getting on was akin to Bruce Lee kicking someone in the face and it just felt tall and top heavy from there on in. It is just not a bike I'd ever entertain. I can imagine someone a lot taller liking the space though.
@@robbikebob sorry but you reminded me of my mate years ago...5ft6 tall and rode a Suzuki DR Big, very impressive seeing him dismounting on the move to stand beside it at the lights, then single leg mount as he pulled away...never won a traffic light drag but was close 😯
Rob BikeBob hi pal, the only thing I thought was that the seat on the xr is a bit bucket-like once your in it there’s very little opportunity to move around, the Gs has a very much slimmer profile to the front of the seat, this is something that bmw addressed with the intro of the water cooled bikes, and I agree the Gs is easier if leg length plays a part... and tbf a Gs is hard to best as an altound Swiss Army knife sort a bike... 👍
Another great review. Thanks. I had the mark 1 version but sold it as the suspension was too hard even though it had the electronic suspension and I had the BMW comfort seat. I've tried loads of other bikes in the meantime but none created such a buzz to ride or felt so safe to ride ie brakes and cornering. Bearing in mind you have a G S I'll be interested to learn how you get on with the hard seat and stiff suspension.
Can you please confirm how wide the bike is with the panniers fitted? Always stress about filtering with panniers on. Also what is their capacity? Cheers and, as always thanks for the video.
Nice video again, I don’t know if anyone has mentioned this but have you checked out BMW’s Connected App? If you set that up amongst many other things it will provide turn by turn navigation to the TFT screen so you don’t need the additional Sat Nav above. Please do a review I’m sure your viewers would like it.
still got the vibration what about the rattle on cold start mine sounded like a bag of spanners on first start up worse if left for a couple of days . great vids mr flyer
Test riding one of these tomorrow, will probably wait for another of your videos on said bike to see what u think as an hour test ride is pants most of the time. Thanks for the videos.
Great reviews and what a nice bike on your reviews can you mention if it gets hot on the seat and legs as my new triumph tiger 900 gets so hot, many thanks tony
Please when you test a bike where the luggage cases are mounted on, open them and show us how much they can hold and talk abouth the quality, thank you
I did one test ride and liked it very much. Very minor vibrations that me as a sensitive rider didn't feel much, seat was lovely for touring, legs are comfortably positioned also, amazing wind protection...and more. I loved it but will do more test riding.
Looking forward to your further reviews. I think your loaner has the optional larger screen. I borrowed one whilst my GSA was benign serviced and found the seat Uber comfortable for the 4 hour ride I did. Also I had no issues with any vibrations. My verdict - excellent machine and I want one!
Having test ridden it three times, found it difficult to ride in town and didn't cope well with the uneven road surface in the south east (knocked off line a lot by defects in the road in bends), it's like being on a buzzing bumblebee, PCP is making BMW bike's prices stratospheric! I bought a new Triumph Tiger 900 instead (they also offered a £1000 more for my BMW part ex), just more useable real day power, comfortable and doesn't feel like it takes three people to get off it's side stand! Sadly I also think someone would steal a XR fairly quickly, being within the M25 some days.
PCP is the biggest legal racket for generations, and as you rightly point out is the reason for vastly inflated prices, giving manufacturers the perfect opportunity to overcharge. It’s basically profiteering.
hollowaysteve i couldn’t agree with you more! Without it the whole motor trade would be in ruins - it’s the same with cars! Who can realistically afford to drop 15K on a motorcycle!?
manwithnoname65 Yes. But it’s more than the difference in cost and the way the finance works. PCP has allowed manufacturers to artificially increase prices across the board. The whole system is a ‘win win’ for them and the story is far bigger than just finance.
@@richardbrooks4549 I was only trying to make a point about useable power and the state of roads we ride (wasn't comparing bikes) , PCP is a way BMW can lock you in and "Servitization" is also the future for these manufacturers. I do think trying to avoid massive depreciation is a big issue with very expensive bike's and cars, maybe contract hire? I had K1600GT it's depreciation was eye watering!
Ha ha glad you mentioned your inside leg measurement, well done you remembered, I have the 2017 XR so interested how you getting on over the next few weeks.
The last generation was vicious-fast, with a rock-solid chassis that lent it immediately intuitive handling. But those vibes were an instant deal killer in my mind. That BMW engineering had another chance at this model and didn't eliminate that serious failing is incomprehensible, and borderline negligence. At least it checks the box with that strange insectoid front that ADV riders apparently adore.
Well lots of reviews I've seen since I made this said that the vibes were cured, so maybe I'm super sensitive. They are definitely much improved and no longer a deal breaker in my opinion, but at certain rev/speed combinations, they are there....not as smooth as I'd like a 4 cylinder to be....
Great video. Can’t wait for the long term review of the bike. I’m currently torn between the 900tiger and S1000XR. I know it’s 2 completely different bikes , but looking forward to the next lot of videos.
TMF ive very interested in this bike, Im sure you'll answer in videos following on but the buzzing you described at the start of the video is that just in the seat? and if so can it be modded out with an after market seat? As im sure your aware the previous gen suffered from handlebar vibrations and other people have said that have eradicated this? can you offer more insite please? you may have already answered this in a video due for release soon.
I think the oil cooler & radiator needs guard protection from stones etc ........bound to be expensive to replace! Good first impressions and as you say looks far far better at the front end.
Thank you for posting. I was at a store the other day checking out the s1000r. The sales rep said it could be chipped to get the same output as the s1000rr. I suspect the exhaust would have to be changed, but the conversation went off in a different direction. In any case, I wonder if you could also chip the xr. Could make for an interesting bike. :)
I never rode the old XR so will have to try the new, although in all honesty it’s not my cup of tea with the whole lucky chain stuff; it does fit a segment of the market though from those moving on from sports bikes to something more comfortable but not losing their sportsbike roots🤔
Be nice to see a review of this and the R1250GS. Split video Andy to test your editing skils. I think many GS owners have considered the XR at some point and it would be good to hear your views. I wonder how close the usable performance is now that the GS has even more torque.
Keyless ( on Speed Triple). Yeah it's silly. Still need the key for the seat, and petrol filler cap. It kind of makes the dealer fit alarm a necessary extra. I'm getting used to it. I still don't like it !
Nice looking machine but I do question the vulnerability of the lower oil cooler. As a BMW owner I can understand people being highly critical of the separate SAT NAV arrangement especially now with the introduction of these TFT instrument clusters. However once I learned how to use Garmin Basecamp to plan my routes I have a totally new appreciation for this configuration. The ability to remove the unit and program it off the bike while traveling is awesome! No one does GPS better than Garmin in my opinion, don’t believe me troll the Honda Goldwing sites. Many aren’t thrilled with the integrated NAV unit.
My son has the 2018 S100XR, and I feel it's way too busy at speed. I'm always looking for a 7th gear! We'll probably change sprockets this year to make the gearing taller. Fuel consumption and consequently range is less than desired, although not as bad as some. The 2020 model adds TPMS which is a very welcome addition, curiously absent from the previous years. Comfort and ergos are great - but the buzz through the bars cannot be completely tamed even with weightier bar-ends. This becomes an annoyance on longer trips. Good to see the lareger screen on the 2020 - my son has the MRA which is similar in style.
@@TheMissendenFlyer phone connections aside, I'm really impressed with the Tiger 900. I'd love to buy one, but the only color I like is available only on the Rally Pro. I'd prefer to buy the basic model, but I really don't want it in white, which I believe is the only choice. Id to have to pay thousands more for the Rally Pro just because I like green!
Great video, when you do more could you cover the luggage please? Would really like to see their capacity, ease of opening and closing and removal if possible. Looking at one of these in the coming months when we get out of lock down in Victoria, Australia. I would like to know more and how it compares to the GS. Tossing up between the XR, GSA, Multistrada 1200s and the Super Duke GT.
You went through Winkfield Row; I used to live there, glad you noticed its beauty! The biggest complaint of the MK1 and MkII versions where annoying vibes through the handlebars; supposedly quelled for 2020 - how did you fine them?
Very nice machine. The only Beemer I could ever be tempted to go for would be a two-wheeler, tbh. Whilst I'm here, if you ever get the chance, I'd be interested to see if you could get Yamaha to give you a spin on their new Tricity 300 'trike' and then give us your thoughts on what seems to be a potentially big growth area in commuting as far as some brands are concerned. The launch day reviewers seemed to enjoy riding it but it would be very interesting to get your keen-eyed views.
Great first ride, look forward to the bigger picture. First impression is that without the BMW roundel it might not be a BMW. If the seat, the short sidestand, Satnav screen and other issues were perfect I would pay the premium price, but really BMW you must up your game to retain the reputation. I agree with the comparisons with a GS. Would I soon regret buying this bike and wishing I had rather saved for the thoroughbred 1250GS? Mrs Flyer's views eagerly awaited.
Got rid of my 2017 XR after two years, couldn’t stand the buzz which got worse by the mile and useless heated grips. For a 2020 updated bike at the price they now are, shame on BMW for not resolving the buzz issue. If Japanese bike manufacturers can produce a super smooth inline 4 then they get my business. Japanese bikes are easier to maintain, more reliable and cheaper to both buy and service. As an older rider, now 70, I look for different values when assessing a new bike purchase. BMW do however produce well designed comfortable bikes in some of their range and no one bike fits all riders. That’s what the free market is all about. Good review👍
Nice review TMF. I noticed the colour looks very different between the GoPro and the phone, I assume the latter is more representative? Red is a bigger to film, but if it's like the phone footage then it's a lovely colour too.
Another great video Andy. What is your relationship with Kawasaki.?Would be very interested if you could do a review of the new versys 1000 se?Keep up the great work.
great review , and a fine looking bike. The sat nav is in two parts so they can sell you the second one as an option , or thats certainly the way it looks to me. But ill bet its an easy bike to live with , look forwards to your thoughts a few weeks down the line , but by then its winter and this will be last years model in january , so I wonder what next years version has in store, this has been such an odd year in so many ways.
Not a fan of the "adventure" styling of the new sports tourers, I really don't need the ground clearance, but the BMW seems like a very competent bit of kit. I habitually walk bikes around while seated on them when parking though, and I can just see how I'd bark my shins or the back of my ankle with that peg position (not that this bike's alone in that).
I understand what your saying, I would put this bike in the sport touring segment of the market. BMW puts this in their Adventure lineup. The R1250 RT is the true sport touring in their lineup.
Having a separate, removable GPS is GOOD!!! Being a Garmin based unit, it it fully compatible with Garmin Basecamp software. People who go for long tours create routes in Basecamp on their computer. Then they detach the GPS from the bike, bring it inside, connect to the computer, and upload the tour route. It's actually a very slick and seamless method to get complicated long tour routes into the GPS unit.
I'm with you on the new symmetrical front. The asymmetrical prior version was a monsterosity!! Was an absolute deal breaker for me. Now, though, I'm in!
As always TMF, good honest opinion, I have a 2018 model, agree at motorway speeds it is very viby, "best to go above motorway speeds then!", I love the riding position, and performance, mine seems to handle better two up, and you can certainly throw it into the bends, I've put a 'foot on my side stand so it stands more upright, you need a mortgage to buy the BMW luggage though, use the quickshifter and it flies, agree it's more for sports bike riders who want a more comfortable riding position.
@@TheMissendenFlyer I currently have the KTM great bike but disappointed with the KTM after service. Rode the XR this week and it was a nice ride but did not seem as powerful lower down in the range. That is where the KTM Low range torque comes into play which is amazing. Think the BMW was limited to 9000 rpm as a dealer biker so was not able to really push it, but it definitely a bike that focuses on more of the top end. The riding position I found to be more comfortable that the KTM and a lot more refined. Wanted to see what your thoughts we're before I make my mind up if I change or not. Thanks for the reply 👍
At 9:01 the bike looks almost identical to a Multistrada. I worry about Ducati reliability but neither my 2016 GS or 2018 has been reliable. 2018 has some serious valve noise I'll try to get resolved this week. I'd buy the Mutli 1260 today and just take my chances. Can't be any worse than my BMW's have been.
Great review. This new XR is a nice looking bike and the rear panniers now clip on an off and dont need the old support frame which was an eye sore. Its a performance bike and any similarities with the GS just go out of the window above 8k rpm. I think it works a lot better than specs on paper and general perceptions. Really looking forward to seeing more on this new model and your thoughts of touring and longer ride feedback please. Just watch your speed on this one...
@@mikemcgovern3372 the 1000cc 4 cylinder Bmw engine in the XR, R and RR idles at almost 2k rpm.... My friend has a 2019 XR and he loves taking it above 8k. Our bike group likes to go up in the hills, in the Hinterland and around the Scenic Rim in Queensland Australia, so you are correct, its mainly 1st and 2nd for him and one rider on an R1 mainly in 1st. I ride an R1200Rt Lc and its 2nd and 3rd for me....The roads here are empty compared to the UK where i grew up. I have ridden the Xr and its a fun bike and capable of touring but the power is definately at the top end. Personally i prefer the low down pull and midrange of the Boxer and other twins like the Ducati Multistrada. I guess it's all subjective to ones personal preference. However i did enjoy riding a Honda CBR1000RR which is a great bike that revs up to over 14k rpm. If I could afford it and justify it I'd have 20 bikes in the garage but 2 are enough at this time. What do you ride ? Have you tried the XR ?
Branko Jerbic Ah, fair enough. Looked at the XR a while ago but went for a Multi which got written off. Then an 899 Panigale, then a 950sp. Also got a GS so I guess I like twins!
Cracking Video as always....shame about that buzzing still.....was hoping they would have dialled this out for the new model.....still on my shortlist though along with the R1250RS ....but for the money BMW want I'd want it to be perfect.....and while I'm yet to have a test ride....I suspect it may be an issue, hopefully not a deal breaker
Excellent review as always. I took one out last week and had exactly the same thoughts bit buzzy in 6th at 4000rpm felt strange like it needed another gear which it obviously doesn’t, if you ride through it you don’t notice it as much but then your 70+ apparently it’s a consequence of the dreaded Euro 4. Totally agree with seat comfort or lack of it, Wunderlich may come out with a replacement or Viking Motorcycle Seats Sevenoaks can customise. I couldn’t really fault it apart from that. Retail £16795 dealer would do £16000 otr. Extras personally I would just need luggage and integrated sat nav. I’m trying to find one bike that does 4 bikes job and px ing the lot, I think this is as close as I have found that ticks all the boxes. Be really interested to see pillion video as the Mrs needs to be comfy and the gel seat on my Tiger is faultless.
Thanks for the video. Interested to see more on this coming. It is one I may be interested in selling my 900 tracer for. Be interesting to see what the seat is like as that is a weak point on the tracer for me. Thanks.
This is top of the list for the next bike along with the 850gsa, and the next gen S1000r (can’t stand the squinty eyes either!) looking forward to the next few videos!
I think they've done a good job on the styling, but from a practicality point of view it seems to have a ridiculously short front mudguard, so I think an extender and radiator guards would be a sensible addition.
I'd love to hear your comments on whether now's the time to consider the new s1000xr or if a bargain should be had picking up an older one. Although it's definitely an improvement, I've not heard anything that suggests it's a significant improvement, "evolution not revolution" comes to mind. Looking forward to hearing your views on this bike!
Lots more to come but personally I think it's a massive improvement on the old bike, far better looks and a marked reduction in vibes (although not fully eradicated as i said).....I'd consider this bike now where as I wouldn't have done the old, squinty eyed version......
Hi TheMissendenFlyer. I was watching your videos for quite a few years and enjoyed every bit even if not always agreed with you.But nevertheless great job. Sorry to bother you as this is not with regards to the bike you are testing in this video. Did you ever installed any sort of bar risers to your GS? I know you were travelling a lot on your GS so your opinion will definitely matter. I'm only 5ft8 and wondering if bar risers would make my GS Adventure any more comfy..Thanks in advance .
Have you reviewed the F900 XR yet? Be interested to see your views on that bike. I loved it. It's between the S1000 XR and F900 XR for me and I'm erring on the side of the F900 after seeing that the vibes haven't been sorted in the 2020 model. That's a real shame considering its price. Very surprised that the seat is so hard
Test rode this a couple of weeks ago while my Speed RS had new tires installed.Did not think I would like it as I am a naked bike fanboy. However, I thought the XR was absolutely amazing! Rides great, the weather protection is almost perfect (screen just an inch or so too low for me to be in complete calmness, but that's and easy fix. It goes like I don't even know while being super comfy ....and I think this will be very expensive when the 2021 version in hp- (or is is it M now?) color scheme. I want one. Badly.
@@TheMissendenFlyer Yes I did, but I am hoping to gather more long term thoughts on the “issue” - is it something that has started to concern you after your “initial impression” ride and you become more aware of the bikes good (and bad?) points?
Great job on the video TMF. I think i would prefer the 900 XR , its lighter and more manageable, there was a lot of grunting when you picked it up off the side stand on the turning circle check. It will probably sell well. BMW has a great range of bikes at the moment. Cheers.
Looking forward to the vids on this bike. Considering changing my S1000r for one in a year or so. Keen to see what the luggage offers in terms of useable space and practicality. 👍
I tested the last model back to back second hand against the Mulit Strada. Brought the Ducati. The BM feels like its reving too high even at 100kph. Kept looking for another gear.
Rode the 2015 initial version through Italy Austria Slovenia into Croatia and back over a week on all road types, passes and M ways....in testing conditions over all the usual passes... Loved it, vibes were noticeable but didn't put me off it.... great bike then... refinements and major changes now... looks to be the bike it was meant to be.... still can't afford one... so will wait until 2027 and get one then.... good informative vlog as usual.... :-)
Why is it that some inline fours are smooth, and some have excessive (handlebar) vibration? Engine counter-balancers, rubber handlebar or engine mounts? I would have thought a BMW would be one of the smooth ones, with its premium price and reputation.
Agree with the comments below, having tested the previous model I immediately discounted it due to the constant vibration. I don’t need the extra top speed (who does) or the 0.1 sec improvement in 0-60. It’s the GS all day long for me.
Actually Hugh they've worked the mid range so this bike is now more usable on the road...at least it feels it to me. Huge improvement on the original model I think (and that wasn't a bad bike by any means - except for those vibes.....)
Test rode the old version and the buzz was mostly in the bars. I noticed you didn’t mention that on this one, just the seat then? Great vid as always, TMF
Hugely improved over the last iteration - I noticed it most through the pegs and seat this time - minimal through the bars and then only at certain rev/speed combos....not really an issue on this bike.
At the start of every video you say “So if you’re interested in this bike, stick around and stay tuned.”
I stay even when I’m not interested in the bike 😅 keep up the good work! Cheers from Down Under 🇦🇺

Nah. Ninja 1000SX for me. Silky smooth and Japanese reliability. Not as much electronics but fantastic value.
I own the Ninja 1K and would have to agree with you. 7200 miles so far and NO issues

I think you’ll find when you just pull on the front brake it’s actually linked with the rear hence it works so good. That’s how my GS works
Yes you may well be right......
@@TheMissendenFlyer This is correct on the 2020 XR. Very reassuring.
Agreed, great system. Linked brakes on K1600 since 2012.
I had that on my 2009 Transalp. Very reassuring. I really miss it having gone to a GS without abs now 😅
I had one of the first into the country in 2015 I hated the buzz at cruising speed then and sold it after only 6 months, I can't believe BMW still haven't cured it. Apart from that I loved it but couldn't live with that annoying vibe.
Nice video again
Terry
Extremely interested in more vids on this. I've got an 05 vfr, and I think this might be the practical sports bike I've been itching for!
As usual, i loved the video 👍
Just 3 weeks ago i've tested this bike.
I'd say it's just good practice to not overtake in or around junctions, nor in residential areas (usually you'd have a 30mph limit there too).
“We’ll stick her on the back”. Would love to see Mrs Flyers reaction to that statement :). Great review as usual, looking forward to the next one. Many thanks 🙏
Brilliant motorbike to be sure. A prepaid thumbs 👍🏼 for Mrs Flyers appearance, we do enjoy visiting with her now and again.
She'll be back!
I've test ridden this bike several times from the first gen model onwards and it amazes me that BMW still canot sort out the vibration issue.
Mick Angel hi Mike, I rode the new XR recently and didn’t find a vibration problem... @threesixmoto
@@36moto No bar vibes at motorway cruising speed or there are vibes which don't bother you?
A Beemerphile buddy of mine bought an XR, rode it for less than 1000 kilometers, hated it and sold it before I could even twist its throttle. Thing is, among other BMW’s, he rides a fully appointed S1000RR (his second) - which he loves. Go figure! The cautionary tale here is that the XR may be an acquired taste, even for Beemerphiles. Perhaps more of a niche bike than a nice bike?
What do you think compared to the 1260 Multistrada? I was very impressed by it (non-Enduro version)
Fnar fnar
Hahaha!
Mrs Flyer would entirely agree......
Yes the GS is easy in comparison with it's low COG - one of it's best characteristics in my opinion.....very easy to live with as a result...
Good show, Andy. Really looking forward to your series of review videos for this bike.
Coming soon!
Im bit shorter in the leg, I test drove an xr, and that was what bugged me was the pegs were right where I wanted my legs to be when stopped
Thanks for the leg length. I am 5'7" with a 26" inseam.
Great first ride review and thoughts , be interesting to see what you think in the final video, which you hinted at in a Previous video
Stay tuned!
Please when you test a bike where the luggage cases are mounted on, open them and show us how much they can hold and talk abouth the quality, thank you
Especially to see if at least one of the cases can hold a full face lid
I did one test ride and liked it very much. Very minor vibrations that me as a sensitive rider didn't feel much, seat was lovely for touring, legs are comfortably positioned also, amazing wind protection...and more. I loved it but will do more test riding.
Looking forward to your further reviews. I think your loaner has the optional larger screen. I borrowed one whilst my GSA was benign serviced and found the seat Uber comfortable for the 4 hour ride I did. Also I had no issues with any vibrations. My verdict - excellent machine and I want one!
So when are you putting the deposit down?
Chris ODwyer Surely comparing the Tiger 900 with the BMW 1000 is not a fair comparison. The 900XR is similar in price to the Tiger and cheaper on PCP!
I had K1600GT it's depreciation was eye watering!
will watch with interest, as I value your opinion. As this is on my shopping list. just those vibrations!!!!
Curno Bullen I’ve just bought the tiger 900 GT plus luggage for £12.4k no comfort problems at all and saved £££’s over the bmw. 😎👍
Steve Wright totally agree. The tiger is a lot of bike for much cheaper. I really like the new tiger. Enjoy
And here I am.. after a long time.. just in time when I am in the market to buy one..
Excellent!! Lots more to come on this bike...stay tuned.
I had a 2016 model and the radiator caught a rock that created a leak. The cost to replace it was over $1,000 US. BMW = Bring More Wallet.
@@brittsmith1824 oil and rad guard combo for this new model is $89 CAD. easy decision.
@@christophertrueman6701 Yes, lesson learned the hard way.
I believe the XR has a different cam shaft system/design from the RR. Highly skeptical on that comment.
How's the seat comfort? If comparing the 1000xr with the kawasaki z1000sx and multistrada 1260s which one is the best?!
Great first review of a nice looking bike enjoy....stay safe....thanks for sharing
Nice Review - thanks. Any plans on doing a ride and compare on the 2021 model?
No - are there any changes for 2021 then????
I never rode the old XR so will have to try the new, although in all honesty it’s not my cup of tea with the whole lucky chain stuff; it does fit a segment of the market though from those moving on from sports bikes to something more comfortable but not losing their sportsbike roots🤔
Be nice to see a review of this and the R1250GS. Split video Andy to test your editing skils. I think many GS owners have considered the XR at some point and it would be good to hear your views. I wonder how close the usable performance is now that the GS has even more torque.
Its in the can and coming soon!
Excellent. Look forward to it.
Are you going to do a comparison with a 1250 GS? I'm tempted to swop next year.
OMG just look at that cat converter for emissions :( . I'll stick with my GS. I'd love the power but couldn't loose the comfort of the GS.
Tiger 900 has integrated nav/gps as well I'm pretty sure.
Not the one I rode! You have to connect it to your phone for that via the Triumph app and the bike I had refused to connect.....
@@TheMissendenFlyer I stand corrected. You are right, sir.
Phone connection needed
I have a video coming soon comparing this with the GS - stay tuned!
Great review as ever, be interested to hear a comparison to the Triumph Tiger 900 GT Pro?
You went through Winkfield Row; I used to live there, glad you noticed its beauty! The biggest complaint of the MK1 and MkII versions where annoying vibes through the handlebars; supposedly quelled for 2020 - how did you fine them?
As I said in the video - improved but still there at certain revs....
@@TheMissendenFlyer Missed that - I must try harder! 😀
Great review. Good looking too. What about screen seems like your looking through it which can be a pet hate
Stay tuned Robert - Mrs Flyer has been on board and will be sharing her views in a video to come!
The buzz in the handlebars is in fact GONE. The buzz TMF mentions is something different.
Great video as always, what gloves were you wearing during this video/ review?
Cheers!
Thanks - Err, can’t remember!
Sadly I do not really have one - hoping to rectify that soon....
great review , and a fine looking bike.
G Basecamp is pants.
Good review! This or the KTM SuperDuke 1290 GT? Which would you buy?
Hmm tough one - KTM I think.....
Branko Jerbic Unless they only use 2 gears, most riders will spend the majority of their time well below 8k rpm.
No it’s defo not a deal breaker anymore....
Good first look video TMF.
I do like the look of the XR range but not ridden one, may have to try one.
I have a video coming soon where Mrs Flyer compares the comfort of the XR with the GS from a pillion's point of view....stay tuned!
@@TheMissendenFlyer excellent thanks for that

I'm only 5ft8 and wondering if bar risers would make my GS Adventure any more comfy..Thanks in advance

I have indeed - video on this channel...
Looking forward to your longer term view TMF I have a 19 and this is probably my next chariot 👍👍
I want one. Badly.
How have you / are you finding the level of vibration on the XR? Seems to be an issue in many reviews. Its the main factor that puts me off of an XR.
Did you watch my review?
@@TheMissendenFlyer Yes I did, but I am hoping to gather more long term thoughts on the “issue” - is it something that has started to concern you after your “initial impression” ride and you become more aware of the bikes good (and bad?) points?
Great job on the video TMF. I think i would prefer the 900 XR , its lighter and more manageable, there was a lot of grunting
when you picked it up off the side stand on the turning circle check. It will probably sell well. BMW has a great range of
bikes at the moment. Cheers.
TMF, what did you think of the throttle action, nothing happens for the first quarter turn? Apparently relates to emissions? Cheers
Didn't notice the slack....
Great panniers, what brand are they?
BMW
Interesting that you say the clutch action is light, my 2016 is really heavy
Why is it that some inline fours are smooth, and some have excessive (handlebar) vibration? Engine counter-balancers, rubber handlebar or engine mounts? I would have thought a BMW would be one of the smooth ones, with its premium price and reputation.
Louis Lopez The original XR was notoriously vibey.
TheMissendenFlyer. Thanks Andy, useful to know. In that case I may test this latest version.
