Righttttt... i love it more then the original. And they expanded on their backgrounds which i absolutly love. The 7 dwarfs. Shrek being kicked out at 7 years old etc. Amazing musical.
The explosive reaction from the audience confirms the feeling that I, and I personally feel everyone else, has ever had about this sequence;
This was the point where this stopped being the "Shrek Musical" and actually became a broadway show in the hearts and minds of everyone watching.

Beautiful Turn of Phrase
Idk why but I genuinely love how the first thing he says is “I guess I’d be a hero”. It’s the most generic and simple term he uses throughout the song. Not a Viking, not a poet, a *hero* .. Because that’s generally all he wants to be. He just wants to be the good guy for once. The rest of his ideas(of who he’d be)are more adventurous and fun, more like random ideas. But the first thing that came to his mind was simply being: A hero. I also love how before he says it he looks like he’s not taking it seriously, and then the moment he says the word at 1:12 , he looks awkward and sad🥺🤌🏾
The text is full of layers and the music too. As the song goes on Shrek becomes more confident. He goes from "I guess I'd be a hero" to "Yes, I'd be a hero". More and more instruments get added, even sleighbells which the audience will associate with Christmas - the time of wishes, big and small. He would like to be a poet but he knows he would need help with spelling because he probably is only semi-literate. He wants to write his story and "wipe away the lies" because society only tells lies about ogres. He wants to take a ship and travel the world but an ogre always hides. He is seen as big and gruff and tough but he rejects those toxic notions and instead wants poetry, wants to admit his feelings. He would overcome the beast, not kill it - because he himself is seen as a beast by society. They gave Shrek an "I want song" and man does it hit hard.
@@IQSim bruh I didn’t see this comment till now😭I could write an essay about this song and how beautiful it is musically and lyrically, but I don’t have much people to tell that
@@IQSim The Viking part too. He doesn't want the power part, he wants the adventure, the freedom, to feel the salt and sea. 'Maybe storm some beaches' is like an afterthought.
Took the words out my mouth
I love this particular performance of the song because you can clearly see during the first bit he's just humoring Donkey and not really putting much stock in it, the hesitation he has while he says "A shield within my grip" as if he thinks it's silly is also great, and you can see he starts getting a little more into it with the Viking example, but after that when he excitedly launches into the Poet verse you can see he's actually more into it than he realizes.

"this is in a family musical" if we ignore the fact that they say the word 'ass' and the t slur then yes i suppose so
@@oranplan1630 Kids aren’t babies. They can handle a not so offensive word (ass) that was used in the movie, too. The movie contains “damn”, “ass”, and other minor curses, as the movie was never meant for babies.
@@clarelabellerose the slur is still included tho. It's in one of the songs, Story of my Life, I believe? t slur
The lyrics are so good. The moon would help with spelling. We see Shrek putting up signs in the movie, so he might know the basics of writing. But he might need some help, might need an editor and admits it here. He knows about timing, wit and rhyming - he clearly has read more books than people would give him credit for. He doesn't "kill" the beast, he "overwhelms" it. Other people might consider him a beast but that doesn't mean he has to kill. Oof, so deep.
This song epitomizes the feelings of every protagonist and some antagonists in every musical ever. They all want their perfect happy ending.
One of the most underrated Act One ending songs ever.

To be fair, In the studio version you can hear Donkey better.
There’s nothing like the power of live theater performed by some of the most talented humans on earth.
This song has no business being as good as it is, it's bizarre. But here I have chills and tears in my eye
the studio recording doesn’t do this song justice. i’m currently playing shrek at my local theatre, and whenever i practice this song i always listen to this, not the studio recording. there are very noticeable differences, and i love brian’s singing when he’s acting, and not just standing in a booth.
some of the best differences are
at 1:48 when he sings those words more belty and from the stomach.
2:46 he belts that out and you can feel his feelings in his singing which is gorgeous.
4:30 when he belts “carry her away” is so much better than the studio. u can tell he means it.
i think the blending of the 3 of them is much better in this version, specifically at 4:45 when they say “should”. gorgeous. amazing blend.
anyway yeah those are my thoughts. i love this song so much
Honestly, the way I see it is there have to be differences in the studio recording vs the stage singing. Most noticeably, the lack of video, so they have to be clearer with their words, and volume as well, since the acoustics are very different.
GOOOSSSSHH he was undoubtedly the best Shrek, no one sings this song better than him. Also, his live performance is actually better than the studio recording vocally speaking. I guess he's like Idina Menzel and Ben Platt... you can't capture his voice on a recording.
Brian D’Arcy James, he’s great! I think he did some work in Hamilton too!
