    Great views on this hike Bryan. Sorry you had to carry the extra weight of a bear canister. There must have been some sort of aggressive bear activity in the area. You always do such an excellent job of hanging your food from a tree. Thanks for sharing.

    • @BryanDeLay
      @BryanDeLay  4 месяца назад

      Thanks Rick! Yes, they were having problems with aggressive bears, because backpackers were poorly hanging their food around the balds and walk-in campers near the Blue Ridge Parkway were keeping food in their tents.

    Great trip. Beautiful forest area. It seems odd that the canisters would be required in our non-national park. I know you don’t like to carry them. I like them for the convenience and peace of mind, even if they weigh a little more but I have a smaller one than you do.

    • @BryanDeLay
      @BryanDeLay  3 года назад +1

      Thanks Leon! Shining Rock, which BTW was one of the first wilderness areas created by the Wilderness Act of 1964, is close to Asheville, NC and gets a lot of use. Because people put food in their tents or don't properly hang their food there have been some bear problems in the last few years. My bear canister weighs 42.28 ounces and my bear bag kit weighs 2.5 ounces, so the bear canister adds 2.5 pounds, which is substantial when my base weight is about 12 pounds. Also I've never had an issue with the my bear bag technique, which uses two cords and a ring which acts like a pulley. This allows me to hang my food between two trees and get my food bag very high, sometimes as high as 25 feet off the ground. You may want to check out my video about my bear bag technique.

    • @waterfallmadman
      @waterfallmadman 3 года назад

      Bryan DeLay the rope and bag you use only weighs 2.5 ounces? I would have thought it would be much more than that.

    • @BryanDeLay
      @BryanDeLay  3 года назад

      Yes, one cord, the throw cord, is 1.75mm Zing It 50' long and the other cord, the pull cord, is 2mm 30' feet long. Here's the link to my video showing this technique: ruclips.net/video/T9L4ORK62oM/видео.html.

    • @BryanDeLay

      There are trade-offs Greg. Three big disadvantages are no F-stop adjustment, so no playing with depth of field, a fixed lens and poor performance in low light. Without getting into all of GoPro's many features, the one big advantage though is the stabilization, which creates lots of shooting opportunities by being able to move with the camera. From an video editing perspective maybe a DSLR has some advantage since there maybe less color and lighting adjustments, but I shoot GoPro in a flat color. Actually I enjoy editing, but what I'm doing is time consuming. If you ever see me on the trail please say hello.

    Great video of one of my very favorite places. I have done the Big Butt Trail, but only once long ago and unfortunately in the summer and we went up it, one of the steepest and hardest trails around here that I've ever done. And once just a few years ago we were saved by the bear canisters, several other groups lost their food to a bear, although with your bear bag hanging method you'd probably be OK. And if you're doing that area again, there's a wonderful woods campsite at Grassy Cove Gap, with a great spring just 200 or so feet away.

    • @BryanDeLay
      @BryanDeLay  3 года назад

      Thanks Will! Shining Rock is one of my favorite places too, although the trees and mountain laurel are taking over lots of the balds. I've heard several stories of bear issues there, mostly caused by people doing dumb things. I've done the Greasy Cove Trail several times, so I think I know the campsite at Grassy Cove Gap.

I'm taking next week off to do some hiking along the VA/WVA border but otherwise I am swamped with work. Too many dudes staying home and not working and as a result my phone is ringing like crazy. I could easily decline the jobs and go ahead with my trip but it just feels like a good year to stay near home.
