That is brutal. You almost need to wear a football helmet too when you shoot that thing.
Yeah man. Not a bad idea... 🤣
They aren't that bad!
At least a mouth guard.
that 454 is the scary round brother
🤣
The beauty of that puppy is that you can use anything from .45 Schofield cowboy loads to full bore .454.
"Comes with a free target". Priceless.
That is some fine shootin' at 50 yards with such a hard recoiling revolver, and being the first time you have shot it.
My old Aunt Mae used to say, "it's not what ya know, it's who ya know".
A big thank you to Buff's friend Greg for supplying the Ruger!
Anyone else flinch every time he fired it while the GoPro was on his head?
I have a Super Redhawk in .454 Casull. I bought it on a whim a few years back. It is brutal to shoot with full bore .454 loads. I compromise by shooting hot 45 colt loads. You still get the "hand cannon" effect, but more in the range of a 44 mag. I think in general, 45 colt is an underrated caliber. With modern revolvers and cartridge loadings, it can exceed the power of .44 mag.
Didn't know that about the 45 colts potential. I guarantee it's one of the top 5 most underrated cartridges as it has the most antiquated sounding name imo. Are there commercial loads that can rival 44 mag? Thanks for the knowledge.
@@bruceleroy8063 There are loads for revolvers and rifles that can take the additional pressure. Check out Buffalo Bore. Most of their 45 colt P+ loads are in the 1100 to 1350 fps of muzzle energy, so I think that gets you close to 44 mag territory.
Magnum Research makes the BFR aka Biggest Finest Revolver and they have a BFR Bisley grip frame that is better than the Ruger Bisley version.
@@chaecoco2 45 Colt at it's highest pressures and out of Ruger revolvers are above the 44 mag in power level. There exists a 405 grain load going about 1300fps, which is supermag territory. Most people highly underate the 45 colt because they only sell weak loads in store so someone doesnt blow up a colt single action.
@@rez4958sorry but read up on the two tests in the Gun Digest Book of the Hunting Revolver by Max Prasac. It would worth your time reading this before making unfounded assumptions about the 44 magnum. The Chapter is on the 45 Colt versus the 44 magnum.
I developed a flinch just watching you shoot that hand cannon! Great video and great shooting.
funny
What a great revolver and what a great caliber!
It truly is an amazing cartridge
My aunt took her moose with my Rossi 92 carbine with a Barnes 260 grain copper bullet. At 75 yards. Deader than dead.
Yep, the .45 Colt made it happen. Jim Linebaugh writings tell the story. . 5 shot cylinder for my .45 Colt is all it needs.
I added some red nail polish to my front sights. The girl at Walgreens gave me a funny look.
What a beast. I don't know if my old hands could handle that anymore. But dang you shot it good 👍
Yeah man it's a beast for sure.
Emotionally and physiologically, it'll put up a good battle to force a flinch habit.
Which gloves are those? Thinking I might need a pair.
Also, thank you for your efforts. Always enjoy watching your vids.
I thought he was going to spit Spanish after he crank those big 300 grains outta there
Naw bro you’ll be fine with it! I’m 64 and I’m a recoil junkie?I have the exact same revolver and it’s not bad! I’ve also got a 454 freedom arms a Ruger Alaskan 454, and the S&W 460es survival kit? Now the 460es is my favorite and it’s quite a handful!👌😆
That is a great looking revolver. I have a Ruger Blackhawk Bisley in 45 Colt and love it.
Man, hitting that lock was impressive!
". . .comes with a free target." I hadn't heard that one before. Very funny. And, as always, freedom IS the greater good. I heard you say that and I repeat it whenever I can. Thanks.
Great guns with a great company backing up the name. Before Ruger did these massive 5 shot single actions you had to pay 1.5 to 3 times the price for a Freedom Arms or others. When these Super Blackhawk Bisleys came out I ordered a 480 Ruger version so I could load 400gr SWC loads. It’s a fantastic piece for sure.
The free target - N-I-C-E!!!
I had a Ruger Bisley in 45 long colt , years ago , what a nice revolver it was !😎👍🏻
The fun this guy is having is worth the expense for health Improvement
Unpopular opinion: I think the Bisley is a sexier gun than a normal single-action.
I don't know how unpopular that opinion is or isn't but I agree with you.
The standard plough handle of their standard model can be a bit of a palm ripper after several hundred rounds of medium 45 Colt. It's a tad shorter than it should be, in my opinion. Also if I was setting up a custom built with the excellent Blackhawk platform, I'd have a smith round/blend the butt somewhat for comfort, without going too far.
Stuff like the Bisley gripped BFR, or the Freedom Arms 83 have longer handles with their own take on a slightly more vertical and curved grip. It's a good design to allow some rotation and slip to manage recoil. The gun should rise and ride up, and on the return from recoil you simply snap the hammer back with the supporting thumb while locking in the target for the next round.
Definitely is.
I definatly agree.
Bisley ruger is the most comfortable single action gun I've ever owned. I have large hands, and it makes all the difference on the big calibers.
My late neighbor and good friend had a 44 Magnum Blackhawk with a 10" or 10 1/4" barrel. When he was trying to find a holster, I suggested he just get a leather scabbard for a carbine and cut it down a little. He was the kind of guy who would joke about that kind of stuff. I shot it a couple of times with his 300-grain hot handloads. It was a beast. He passed away a few years ago. The kids got his guns. I would've bought it in a heartbeat if his wife needed to sell it. I haven't seen the kids for some time. I hope whoever got it knows they have something special.
Ruger new Vaquero with the handle design the muzzle flip just took up all the impact and was a real pleasure
Beautiful wheely! Single actions kick a lot hard than a double action...That 454 looked like it kicked a lot more than my Smith 500. You my friend are one hell of a shot!!!
Yessir! I could really tell the difference in the single action over some of the double actions I've shot.
That’s a beautiful gun 🥰 I’m a big fan of the Blackhawks. I found a super nice 1969 Blackhawk in .357 mag that I gave to my grandson for Christmas… he’s 3 so he need a year or 2 of growth 😂
Had my .357 Blackhawk converted to .357/44 Bain & Davis 40 years ago. Love it!
Send it to Ruger for a free three screw conversion. It adds the transfer safety system.
Gotta Love the simplicity and true PoweR of the Single Action Big Bore Wheel Gun's.
44 mag is all the recoil I care to deal with in a handgun. The 454 is a great round to watch someone else shoot.😂 Thanks.
Beautiful 454 casull
These are fun guns to own and shoot. I bought both barrel lengths of the 454 Casull & both of the 480 Rugers when they came out a few years ago.
Wich do you like better i have the 7.5" 480
I, for one, am glad to see that they put that base pin locking screw on. I used to have a Ruger Blackhawk in .45 Colt and that base pin would walk out during the first two shots. Pissed me off so much I sold it.
You are too humble about that group and you did that standing! That's pretty cool man.
Love it! My BFR has the same style of grips, and I nearly broke my middle finger from the trigger guard slamming it without gloves.😆😆😆
I've been walloped in the past. I take more precautions nowadays...LOL THanks for stopping by!
Buffalo sir you can sure shoot. Listening to you laugh after pulling the Tigger on that big bore makes me smile. I do love them myself. Great video. Thank you.
Thanks, Buffalo!
I hunted with a guy for many years that used only a .454 Casull SA revolver for deer, elk, mule deer, black bear and hogs. When hunting on horseback in Montana he carried it in a "chest holster".
He had the Freedom Arms Model 83 revolver, which was very expensive. I had always thought Ruger should include it in their line up.
When they added it in the Super Blackhawk I thought they would have a winner for handgun hunters.
Killed a moose last season with mine. Just as dead as any of the other ones that were shot with my 375 ruger
Ruger would never produce a SBH at the same build level as the FA83. And that's totally fine and to be expected. Something for everyone. But the FA is an amazing piece. Like handheld bank vault with the precision of a Rolex. Also, stupidly accurate. The test target they include with their revolvers has a 5-shot group, and it's usually a single cloverleaf hole at 25 yards. Probably ransom rest.
@@exothermal.sprocket Right, the Ruger is perfectly fine for any and all practical (hunting) purposes at a much lower price point.
My lifelong hunting friend was (and is) not a person that was concerned about cost.
That said, had the SBH been available at the time, he probably would have bought one, rather than the FA.
Despite his ability to buy any firearm he wanted, before he bought the FA 83, his favorite hunting rifle for many years had been a Ruger .44 carbine.
And all this even though the vast majority of our hunting was either on my family's ranch in central Texas (Runnels Co.) or in the Bob Marshall Wilderness of Montana. Places where long shots are easily possible. 🤷♂
@@joeyindahl2593 My good friend killed many elk with his. All were just as dead as those I killed with a .35 Whelen.
Certainly a capable cartridge. I'm not a "handgun hunter" per se, but I wouldn't blink at the thought of hunting moose or elk with a .454 if I was.
@@garyK.45ACP I've asked myself the question, would a new GP100 sent off to an experienced and competent custom gunsmith to be worked over thoroughly shoot that much less good than a new Korth Mongoose right out of the box, even if the GP100 total cost (original price plus custom work) was less than half the cost of a Mongoose?
The same thing could be said about a custom Super Blackhawk worked over, or a fill in the blank common competent piece improved, compared to a factory custom/semi-custom.
Wow, that thing kicks like a mule! Great video buddy , Greg has a awesome revolver.
Lordy Buff, that thing is a cannon, awesome gun control at 50 yards there. Dang, that was a tight group out of that beast! You showed it who was boss.👍
Piece of that lock was found in Nevada 😂
That look on your face alone with that laugh when that 454 when off is priceless.
Picked that lock 😂😂😂 Awesome shooting and what a neat gun!
Gorgeous piece. I was unaware that Ruger made these in .454. I got a bunch of those free targets- thanks for showing me what to do with them lol. Also I didn't know metal could evaporate 😅
Thanks... that's about all they're fit for 🤣
Thank you for this presentation.
The most powerful handgun I have shot is the .44 magnum. The first time I shot one it was a 10 inch Ruger single action. I could not hit anything with it. I don't know what bullet or load I was firing in it.That was many years ago.
The next .44 magnum I fired was a S&W Model 629 with the 8 3/8 inch barrel. I could hit really well with it, no matter what loads it was fed. And it was a handful.
There is no way I'll ever buy a .454 Casull in any revolver configuration that I have seen. It is way more cartridge than I am able to handle. I don't have to pull the trigger on one to know that. I have seen plenty of videos with shooters who have way more experience than I have shooting one and they ALL have shown me that the .454 Casull is way more cartridge than I care to shoot from a revolver. I am glad you reminded me of this in such an educational and entertaining manner. Great shooting, Bubba!
And thanks to your friend Greg for loaning this revolver for the video.
My exact thoughts!
I've shot a 44 magnum and a 500 Smith and Wesson.. didn't enjoy either one! However.. I know whatever is on the business end will enjoy it even less so!
I'll stick to the 357 magnum.. and the 350 Legend for now ;)
"It comes with a free target." 😆
Good taste. This has been a dream gun of mine for years. Modern performance with a 19th century look and feel. Great vid as always!
I've got a Ruger Super Redhawk, 7.5" barrel in .454 and yes it is a beast and almost unpleasurable to shoot. Hands down the loudest handgun I have ever fired!
The SRH grip design probably puts more sting directly into the hand than the curved Bisley style SAA grip.
Mercy that's some energy.....good shooting,too..
Very nice ..I have the Blackhawk bisley in 41 mag. Looks basically just like but has a 5.5 barrel and the scroll mark engraved cylinder. Definitely one of my favorites.
I have similar one in 45colt/ 45 auto.
@@larryalexander4833 I wanted one but took to long and never saw another ended up with the 41
@@geraldbatts575 I ordered mine .
I've had a RSBH since 1978 it's still as good as the day I bought it. I've know idea how many rounds its shot. Used it for hunting and IHMSA. It's a closet queen now, rarely gets used.
I rock hound in some creek bottoms where I find grizzly tracks from time to time and its a comfort to have one of these along! I use handloaded 335 grain hard cast in mine. They shoot quite well out past 100 yards, but I use mine primarily for close in bear protection and black bear hunting in thick woods. Its easier than packing a 12 gauge, but that 12 gauge is often along to! :)
Thanks Greg, great to see this revolver on the channel. Thanks for the music from you and your daughter as well.
Nice shooting Buffalo, looks like a nice revolver and seems to be pretty accurate right out of the box.
Thanks Greg for sharing . Thanks Buffalo for showing .
Freedom is the greater good. Well said. That's what the fight is really all about.
Good job hanging on. I agree about typical Ruger finish and reliability. They are made to be used.
Glad you were shooting that beast. Thanks for taking several for the team.💪💪
Had the .454 Freedom Arms quite a few years ago…beast 💥
Love that ruger and caliber and the way the cylinder fits the frame. The report difference between the two calibers is quite different also as well as the recoil. Thanks for the nice review.
Now THAT's a hand gun!
I haven't fired a .454 Casull but I'm willing to go "out on a limb" and say it's a "fingersmacker". Great video! And some darn good shootin at 50 yards with that beast! Well done! Better you than me!
Glad to see this video mostly been watching semiautomatic pistol videos but my true love is big bore single action revolvers.
Super nice revolver Buffalo and as always some awesome shooting and hanging on with a tight grip! Thanks for the video, Slim.
Nice Revolver, I've had many Rugers and liked them all, Thanks for sharing this. 👍🇺🇲
Nice video. I liked the POV stuff particularly. I've never shot a big magnum other than a .44 Mag, which wasn't bad in a full-size super blackhawk. The .454 scares me LOL
At the range with my 5.5in 44 nag, had a fella come over and ask what I was shooting. He was shooting 454 and I was shooting 180gr Remington 44, the fella said it was very loud. 😀😀😀
Tough on the wrists but she's easy on the eyes. Shooting gloves help especially as we get older & wiser. Worse part about the 454 is paying for the ammo. 😥 Sure make you grin when you pull the trigger. Appreciate your time. Stay safe with storms coming thru. 🙏 👍
Thats a lot of handgun, thank you Buffalo and thank you Greg!
Nothing better than Bill and his great company's products! Whoo!
That's a beautiful pistol. It looks like it kicks like a mule.
Nice shooting with it.
Everyone has and is entitled to their opinion. I've owned and shot Ruger rifles and pistols all my life and found their firearms , service and personnel second to none.
When I needed to ship my Ruger Precision they instructed me how to do so safely. My rifle was picked up Wed mid day. I slept little that night and called New Hampshire I believe it was Thurs morning and explained my situation to the lady on their end , please tell me ya ll have my baby, she told me hold on, 5 to 6 mins she said Mr Lacks get some rest we have your baby. I couldn't thank her and Ruger enough.
My rifle was returned to me before supper Fri.
Thank you Ruger and the caring people there who understood my apprehension shipping firearms these days and times.
Better than new it was and they didn't charge me a dime.
Thank you again Ruger.
What a great handgun! Your reviews are always the best. I hope you will try so show tthe power of the 454 casull on variety of targets in the future! You are the man!!
I have no earthly reason to need a revolver like that. But I want one anyhow. It's putting smiles on my face just watching you shoot it.
That’s one powerful round!! And that’s a great revolver chamber in it. It’s also very versatile.
@text-15 Fake!!!!!!!!!!
Sheesh, that gun flips to point at the noon sun! I remember firing my Super Redhawk DA in 454C for the first time. Half a box of ammo later sticky gun oil came out all over the grip. Except it wasn't oil. Blood blisters had formed and split that bit of skin between thumb and index finger. I felt nothing because the recoil had numbed up my hand.
Thanks Greg and Buffalo!
You, sir, have my respect. You handle that recoil quite well.
That is a beautiful handful!! No shortage of power there. Better tell ol Greg to hang on tight to that one. Great work Buffalo!! Thanks brother.
You don’t want to mess with Buffalo and his revolver the man don’t miss.
I can't believe the sight pin is the only thing that came loose on that beast. Nice shooting for sure. Working gun, like it. Better than a shovel.
Wow! I was flinching with some of those shots. Thought that thing was gonna hit me in the head!
A good sign if this is new production. I was beginning to think Ruger wasn't making revolvers anymore. Most of their production revolvers have been out of stock for over two years.
The beauty of the 454 Casull is that you can shoot super hot 45 Colt rounds that match or beat 44 Mag rounds but, that are really pretty comfortable to shoot compared to full bore 454 rounds.
I like the Ruger's with the Bisley stocks. That's a beautiful revolver!
I think its cool, that the front sight wasn't loose !
Another good one, Buff. It was thoughtful of Ruger to provide the free target and thoughtful of you to demonstrate how to put it to good use.
If I was a guide in Alaska this or the 45-70 would be a nice handgun to carry. I have seen the 454 fired, not by me, at shooting expos. The muzzle blast is amazing. It has it's place.
Beast of a pistol , just right for T Rex as a close up last ditch option . There is a serious difference between the .45 Long Colt and the .454 Casull talk about down range hitting power it's more akin to a rifle round , as for that lock it has left the planet ! Thanks for the show & tell & Thanks to Gregg for our Good viewing . Hey All You Pro 2A supporters , Hit the Thumbs Up , It helps this channel & Keeps YT happy & it's FREE . Catch You next episode , Shoot Straight Stay Safe & Stay Well.
I enjoy the video...one question: how long did it take too regain feeling in your hands after shooting?
Yeah I’d say some of those lock parts are in orbit by now lol
@@appalachiangunman9589 the lock picking lawyer channel is pretty good too, but Buffalo definitely wins for quickness!
Ha ha I got ha a real 45 the ole 45 auto steal works like dumping a 13 round semi automatic 45 Glock that feels good
No there isn't a major difference between a 45 Colt and a 454. Most 45 Colt ammo is very under powered for light weight guns. I've got factory 45 Colt, 325 gr at 1325. In a short Blackhawk borderline flinch inducing.
Great review and great fun to watch, too! Here in UK I have a Super Redhawk with a 14" barrel, but I'd dearly love to have this particular revolver as a UK-compliant version. Never going to happen, though, the instant old Bill Ruger stopped breathing, all UK-market products stopped happening.
Always great to hear Buffalo break into joyous laughter upon shooting this pistol. Obviously, this pistol broke this gentle, quiet man into a state of euphoria 😂
Great video and great gun! Thanks Buffalo, and thanks Gregg!
Man I love that, it needs to be sitting beside my .44
I honestly didn't know what to expect, but wow that's some mean ballistics with even a meaner recoil..
I see why your friend let you shoot it first , great job with the shooting as usual.
I finally got my 8 shot S&W .357 revolver with the stainless 4 inch barrel. Now all I need is to find some ammo to feed it.
Fine revolver! Bisley style is helpful for the recoil it has with .454 loads !
If a person is going to hunt big game with a handgun that ctg will do the task at hand !
Great review done well !
Simply great shooting my friend. When you know your going to have to hang on tight it would be sooo easy to flinch. Great breath control too. It was cold enough you could see you exhale after each shot. Great video.
Great video! I like that big bore giggle at the first shots of .454! I have this same model SBH and it's a beast! I have some 300 gr XTP hand-loads that I need to get to the range to test. Thanks for a fun video. The outro music is awesome!
You’re a better man than I am. I’d have the yips within the first couple rounds. That 50 yard group was a lot more impressive than most people realize
like this guy cacklin while he's shootin. havin a great time
Thanks. I truly enjoy it.
Another great video Buffalo. Excellent shooting. No way I could even come close although I wish I could.
The sight pin on my Ruger 44 bisley hunter walks out as well. Not surprised it does on this gun. Thanks for the video I've had my eye on this one since it came out. Hope I come across one at the right time and I'll get one. Wish there were more videos on this gun. Nice shooting btw!
Unfortunately the 454 version of this gun goes for $1500 or more on gunbroker. Hope you can find one that’s reasonably priced.
I had a Ruger gp100 thirty years ago. Looked just like that. Threw a flame every time I shot it
Always fun watching your vlogs. Thanks Buff!
EXCELLENT REVIEW.!!
GREAT VIDEO.!!
THANKS FOR THE DETAILED INFORMATION.
Every time you pulled the trigger I flinched 😂. Great video and shooting! Pretty new to your channel but I’m a fixture now.
I owned a raging bull 454, my job took me to a non free state and I want one back so bad
She provides protection all right. But she's not willing to make it easy lmao. What great revolver.
