      The .45 long Colt is a hand loader's dream. I have been reloading it for 50 years. Power plus and very accurate. The original .45 pushed a 255 gr lead bullet about 855 fps. Jacketed 240,250,260 and 300 gr all match and surpass the .44 mag. Check the Nosler reloading manual for 300gr partition. How about 1100 fps? I have carried this load for 20 years when ever I venture into great bear country. The 454 will sure best it, but I can't handle the recoil and muzzle blast. My bear load is almost more than I can handle at 73 years old.

    • @1958PonyBoy
      @1958PonyBoy Год назад +3

      Buffalo Bore makes some 45 LC +P loads that are ridiculous.
      One loading is a 300gr. semi-jacketed flat point moving at 1350 fps.
      I wouldn't fire those out of my Colt SAA clone, but out of my Henry lever action or my Magnum Research BFR in 454 Casull, oh yeah.

    I shot a buck with the 454, back in 2001. It went down then got up and ran off. I was shooting a 260 gr HP handload. This first time I shot that gun at 100 yards, hit the golf ball. I enjoy accurate guns, but I don't like going deaf.

      My 454 redhawk has a 7.5 inch bbl. Same for the 44 redhawk. The 454 is actually LIGHTER than the 44. At the range @ 100 yards the 44 hits center. The 454 hits 18 inches higher with a heavier slug. Both hot+P WFNHC buffalo bore grizzly loads. Both aimed 2 inches high at 25 yards. Both printing 4 inch circles @ 100 yards. @@liljohn309 , Just for the record, i live in the Alaskan bush. LOTS of bears around. At best my longest shot with the Ruger would probably be 25 yards or less during an attack. Ive shot lots of big assed bears with the hot loaded 45/70 & it works just fine. 1 shot center mass knocks em down & KEEPS em down. The 10MM is becoming real popular up here due to its faster rate of fire but i figure ONE shot that counts is better than 6 that MIGHT work. With bears, theres never enough thump & a handgun is just a backup in case the bear hits you before you can use the rifle. My wifes backup is the 40 S&W because theres no way she could handle the 454. Buffalo bore makes excellent bear stoppers for most calibers. Super hot, bone crushing, bear punching loads. Not cheap, but then neither is the hospital bill IF you survive the attack.

    The 454 Casull is the .45 "Long" Colt punched up...way up.
    Dick Casull used the Colt cases to work up his loads, but had extended cases made to ensure that they wouldn't be used in revolvers (like the Colt SAA) which would do a quick disassembly on them.
    Normal Colt rounds are kept to around 14,000 psi, Ruger only loads can exceed 35,000 psi, the Casull up to 65,000 psi.

      Very true, standard loads in the same powder for 45LC are like a quarter to a third of the same powder 454 load. There are load table for uplaoding the LC for use in 454 and they are half- of the 454 load. Apples to Apples same bullet same powder. I load all of these for my super redhawk, and additionally 460 loads for my V460. I dont know the tables for the powders he has in those loads. Standard LC loads are very close to 45ACP +P+ , which is not going to be much from such a large pistol as the TRJ.

    454 Cas is certainly a deadly cartridge on big game, however, if you are a handloader with a well built modern 45, you easily surpass .44 Mag performance and with a longer barrel, creep up to the shadow of the .45 Cas. Don't believe me? Buy a box of Buffalo Bore .45 Heavy, or non lead rounds (increased velocity) and surprise yourself with what the almost 150 year old Colt 45 can do :)
    AND..without the wrist crushing recoil, ear splitting blast of the 454 Casull... To be sure, if you run into a highly aggressive alaskan 'Brownie', the Cas, (or bigger:) is what you're going to want. But for the lower 48, the hot loaded .45 Colt can do the job just fine AND..with the Cowboy loads, can be shot all day for hella fun:)

    The 454 Casull can shoot a 325gr bullet, and it would be a lot more effective with a longer barrel. You really can't compare a .45 Long Colt with a 454 Casull. The 454 has more than 3 times the impact energy.

  • @thatoneguy454c
    @thatoneguy454c Год назад +1

    .454 casull is my favorite revolver round, but i prefer a revolver chambered in .460 S&W magnum to shoot it out of. That way, you can use everything from 45. Long Colt all the way up to full power 460 mag. 454 casull for bears and such, .460 mag for skin walkers.

  • @glenspryszak6005
    @glenspryszak6005 4 года назад +3

    The Casull is rated 1800 FPE and the 45LC is about 1200 FPE so that was to be expected. Drop the clay and get some railroad ties stacked and then compare all the different handguns. Clay is child's play.

      The debate over whether there is a .45 "Long" Colt cartridge is an on-going one that has been active for probably 75 years. Elmer Keith alluded to the arguments many years ago when he wrote "...Some newcomers to the game claim there is no such animal, but if they had shot the short variety that Remington turned out in such profusion before, during and after World War I they would see there was some basis in referring to the .45 Colt as the .45 Long..." WHO_TEE_WHO,
    the so-called “.45 Long Colt" is just a nick-name for the ".45 Colt” . That is to say the term "45 Long Colt" is referring to the original round that was called ".45 Colt" which was made by the Union Metallic Cartridge Company. And the so-called Short Colt was a nick-name referring to either the "Calibre .45" made by Frankford Arsenal or the ".45 Colt Government" made by Winchester (but not the .45 Schofield).
    The story goes like this, first the government had the 45 Colt made. Then the government adopted the 45 Schofield being it was top break, and just so happened that it could not handle the 45 Colt round [even though the government asked them to try and make it handle such] so S&W had to make it with a softer shooting 45 caliber round.
    So now the government had two different pistols each with different case dimensions. The 45 Colt round was too long to fit in the Schofield, and the Schofield's rim was bigger around and would over lap each other when put into the Colt pistols, whereby only three rounds could be chambered in every other chamber. This caused a logistical dilemma. So the government came up with a solution of which they simply shortened the 45 Colt case down to 45 Schofield length. By doing this they had a case with a small diameter rim that would fit in the Colts, yet at the same time was short enough to fit in the Schofield pistol as well. Frankford Arsenal got the government contract and called the new round the "Calibre .45" and later when Winchester started making them they called them the ".45 Colt Government". And while neither of the three rounds ever had long or short in their naming by the manufacturers that produced them, soldiers and citizens would speak of these as Long and Short Colt rounds. Yet if they were talking about the 45 Schofield they would simply say ".45 Schofield".
    So actually the 45 Schofield was not the reason 45 Colts were called ".45 Long Colt", at least not directly. That is to say the only reason long and short ever came to be spoke of was because they shortened the 45 Colt cases down to be able to fit in a Schofield pistol too. Yet at the same time 45 Schofield rounds were never ever called "Short" because no body ever shortened or lengthened the Schofield rounds.
    So again, even though the three different manufacturers never named any of these rounds by either Long or Short there were long and short 45 Colt rounds made. And the short ones could fit in the 45 S&W Schofield pistols as well as the 45 Colt pistols.
    So if anyone ever tells you that there was never any such a thing as a long or short .45 Colt know that they speak from ignorance. And if anyone ever calls them by "45 Long Colt" or "45 Short Colt", well, simply understand that they are using nick-names given to them. Yet again, the correct names for the variety of 45 Colt rounds are ".45 Colt", and "Calibre .45" or ".45 Colt Government".

    Another great video. If you have a friend with a 454/45 Colt lever gun, you might try the same test. The longer barrel should give you more speed & less fireball (& it's easier on your wrist).
